TEDxMICA-BERTIE Da SILVA- SOLO MUSICAL

Bertie Da Silva has been around for a bit, quite a bit really. You may have
heard him in the late 70s and early 80s with Mel & Fuzz, later with Cyrus
Tata, HIGH and solo. And then again you may have heard him as recently as
2007 with Mel & Fuzz once again, and a few months later with Pink Noise. On
the other hand you may have been / are a student of his at St Xavier's
College in Calcutta in which case you know him quite well too. He's written
and composed all these years and its time, he feels, to get back in the
groove so to speak. Being away from performing in front of audiences for
many years has done nothing to dampen his spirit or enthusiasm. And he's
certainly not doing retro as you may know it, and even want it. There's a
continuing freshness to his sound and the always thoughtful lyrics which
add that quality to music you may be missing from your current listening
pleasures.

[Goanet] BJP has an alibi

2014-06-26 Thread Nelson Lopes
BJP has an alibi

When in power it is different ball game all the way, The BJP finds cover
under the guise that is retrieving the plan of UPA II to increase the fares
by 14,2% AND FREIGHT BY 6%.At least BJP found merit on financial prudence
of UPA II, but when they were in opposition, their own P.M now had objected
in no mean terms. It is like the devil quoting the scriptures when it suits
him the best, The steep rise is hurting the voters unexpectedly, who
expected better days ahead in the words of P.M. Mr Modi, the P.M on the
ascendancy has hinted of bitter pills to correct the ills of the economic
restructuring. What about the sugar enhancement I prices? Is it meant to
counteract the bitter medicine? What a tearing hurries in disappointing the
voters by quoting the Bible of UPA II. It could have waited at least till
the announcement of railway budget or the increase could have been more
reasonable and spread out

The justification that amenities come at a price does not pacify the
irritated voters by the volt face by BJP insensitivity. The partial role
back in suburban season tickets in Mumbai with eye on state elections makes
no sense of rationalisation of much needed resources. In the mean time
commuters have bought 6 monthly and yearly passes to beat the system, which
has netted 25 crores in a few days in revenues to the cash strapped
railways .When in power and now with absolute majority all parties whether
BJP or any other, their approach is the same, lamenting of lack of
resources for much touted development

The BJP is facing tough times without the luxury of honeymoon period. The
controversy of appointment of S.C Judge and the appointment of Governors
following the precedents of UPAII is poor justification or consolation

The voters with high hopes of expectations are disillusioned most

The opposition parties have been united to launch an agitation on railway
hike much to the amusement of the people. Are the politicians of all shades
really concerned with the plight of people ? Do they identify with their
electorate, when the corner unlimited privileges in railways for themselves
and their kit and kin ?.It just hypocritical tears to emphatise with the
commuters and to demonstrate their support to settle political scores at
best

MAHARASHTRA GOVERNOR SHOULD RESEND POLICE BILL BACK TO LEGISLATURE FOR PROPER
DEBATE

Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative and Police Reforms Watch- Press
Statement, 26 June, 2014

  Mumbai:

It is indeed unfortunate that the government of Maharashtra has last week
pushed through the Maharashtra Police (Amendment) Bill 2014 in both Houses of
the Legislature. This hugely important law will decide the directions of
policing in the state for future decades, yet the government has seen fit to
pass it in haste without public consultation, and even at this date it is still
to be seen on official websites.

Under the guise of complying with the Supreme Court’s directives on police
reform in the Prakash Singh case, the new Bill has been deliberately designed
to defeat its intentions of giving the public a capable,well-managed and
accountable police. By diluting and subverting each one of the 6 directives,
the Bill in fact formalises the very practices of unwarranted political
interference with every day police management that the Court had sought to
reduce. The Bill must be overhauled to be made fit for purpose.

The Bill presently awaits the Governor’s assent. We strongly urge the
Governor to invoke his powers under Article 200 of the Constitution of India to
withhold his assent to the Bill, send the Bill back to the State Legislature
for reconsideration, and send recommended changes for both Houses to consider.

Speaking on the subject, Mrs. Maja Daruwala, Director of CHRI, says, “The
Maharashtra Police (Amendment) Bill 2014 is totally unacceptable. We urge the
Governor of Maharashtra to send the Bill back to the state Legislature for
reconsideration. Policing is a serious business that affects the safety and
security of all citizens. This Bill requires fundamental changes if it is to be
in compliance with the Supreme Court's directives and have the possibility of
reforming the police in the public interest”.

JUST DON'T TALK ABOUT WOMEN

India Infoline News Team / 11:34,
07-Jun-14

 [1]

AUTHOR: Ratna Vira

 _PUBLISHED BY FINGERPRINT_

Fingerprint is delighted to bring to you _Daughter by Court Order _by
Ratna, an inspiring and emotional account of a woman who fights her own
mother in order to preserve her identity.

_Daughter by Court Order _is
the tale of one woman's valiant battle against her mother's unjustified
and unwarranted vengeance. It's the heart-wrenching tale of her struggle
to win back her rights from her mother's manipulative tricks.

This is
the story of a woman fighting against power, money, deceit, and
treachery for her right to be recognized as a daughter. A daughter by
court order . . .

Ratna holds a masters degree from the London School
of Economics and Political Science, as well as a masters in English
Literature from St Stephen's College, University of Delhi and is the
daughter of senior journalist Nalini Singh and SPN Singh.

ABOUT THE
BOOK

A seemingly innocuous remark over an innocent cup of tea, and
Aranya discovers that her family has been fighting a decade-long legal
battle over her grandfather's expansive estate. And all this while, they
not only kept her in the dark, but they also kept her very existence out
of the court's knowledge!

A cesspool of emotions, half-truths,
betrayals, and the unspooling of long buried dirty family secrets
threaten to overpower Aranya and disrupt what modicum of peace and
balance she has in her life as a single mother of two children. At the
centre of this storm is the one woman who, ever since the day Aranya was
born, has had nothing but curses and abuses for her; who has
deliberately kept her name out of the court; who has wished her dead for
every day of her life; who refuses to now remember her birth. The woman
who is her mother. Her own mother.

This is the story of a woman
fighting against power, money, deceit, and treachery for her right to be
recognised as a daughter. A daughter by court order . . .

AN EXCERPT
FROM THE BOOK

Life changes in a moment, but we don't always see it
coming. Aranya, or Arnie as everyone called her, didn't.

It was just
after eight on a particularly hot summer morning. Angry at being
disturbed, the woman did not attempt to hide her annoyance at seeing
Arnie. Her tacky nightclothes were in sharp contrast to the ultra chic
black chiffon sari flung carelessly on the bed, the blouse merely a
string bikini revealing more than it covered and glistening with
Swarovski crystals that winked as they caught the light. The flimsy
covering was still damp with her perspiration and her perfume taunted
Arnie for her naïveté. Arnie thought the woman must have been all
smiles, sophisticated and soft-spoken, bejewelled and dressed to kill,
at the President's _At__ __Home_. Arnie had seen this played out several
times and continued to watch her, mesmerised. Her resemblance to Goddess
Kali was striking--large red _bindi_, heavily-_kohled__ _eyes even at
this hour, long hair that was flying and blowing out in all directions
in the blast of the air conditioner. Strands of hair framed her face
like irate serpents, which reminded Arnie of another angry Goddess, this
time Medusa from the Percy Jackson movie. Her pencil-thin lips
disappeared as she leered, mocking Arnie for asking questions. She was
in a terrible rage and Arnie watched as though in a trance, trapped by
her hypnotic snake-like eyes.

Her words were like physical blows and
hurt just as much, but Arnie heard them with a slight delay, like a bad
DVD where the lip sync is off by a few seconds. She shouted and hurled
abuses, unusually vicious even by her standards, as Arnie watched,
stunned and feeling small, dwarfed yet again, her stomach tightening
into a ball. In her mind, Arnie had curled into a safe foetal position,
covering her face with her hands as she tried to block out the attack.

"_Kutiya_!" she screamed. "You want to put your father and me on the
road? I am alive and will not let your evil plans succeed. You want him
dead? You will not succeed, _haramzadi_. You should have died in that
bloody incubator. I would have done it but my father warned me that this
would not go unnoticed in France and that bloody social worker person
made my life miserable asking all those questions. Then Baby Singh came
to get you and made you just like her, the misery of my life. She has
gotten her revenge! I am left with an imbecile, an idiot like you, the
tragedy of my life. I have important calls to make, the government may
fall, the famous director wants to cast me in his next film, but here I
am wasting my time with you!" She was shouting so loudly now that Arnie
was worried her mother mi

[Goanet] I have few questions to Dalgado Akademi

2014-06-26 Thread Stephen Dias
I am sincere Goan lover of Romi Konkanni to progress first and may be
later Devanagri Konkanni, and one day Goans may enjoy fame and importance
of this Romi Konkanni as almost 99% talks at home in Konkanni and write
and read in Romi language. Parrikar is playing his stunts and balancing
with Marathi and Konkanii, since he wants both, to satisfy all, as he wants
to stay ON in this CHAIR as CM,which everybody will have a greed, may be
YOU and ME also, who knows!

My questions for the Dalgado Akademi is :

Why we should send a bad signal to our Fr Pratap Naik, who may be has
interest in Marathi but we should keep him with us and make him to
understand slowly that Marathi has no place in Goa. Once we ignore him we
are calling for more enemies within us. Second question , why Tomazinho
Cardozo is playing hide and seek I know he is a great Konkanni lover and
wants Konkanni to progress and even he takes help from the Konkanni
Tiart/shows/writing books etec but I also feel why he does a hiding game
since he wants to be also in good terms with Parrrilkar and earlier with
Digamber? May be he feels they may help us one day? I do not understand
this game of Tomazinho? I feel everyone has a fault and that could be the
reason Konkanni not getting its proper place or importance. We say that we
should talk Konkanni everywhere , in weddings , writing etec etc but
Akademi themself writes in English in Goanet? and I too write or reply in
English? Was this a good job of ourselves? who are only giving sermons to
others. All I feel we ourselves wants to dominate and get importance and
fame. This way how Konkani will progress? Goans and especially the top guys
in Konkanni wants name and fame and there is a CRAB MENTALITY and because
of that we Goans will never come up and Konkanii will remain stagnated as
it is. Third question is we have many such types in Goa who are been
ignored when it comes to get position sitting among you in dais? Most of
them are been ignored. We should try to invite or call them or even beg
with them to bring more and more people especially Hindus and Muslims in
our fold.

Sorry if I have hurt somebody but this is my feeling in the interest of our
Goan language Konkanni.

*DKA RELEASES 3 NEW BOOKS*
There was a time when Konkani was treated with contempt as a language fit
to be spoken in the kitchen but in spite of knowing its importance now we
are not giving Konkani the respect it deserves. In our wedding receptions
and other functions, we conveniently forget Konkani and take great delight
in using English, thereby offending the elderly persons present who do not
understand a word in English, said Fr. Eusebio Gomes, Editor of Konkani
