[Goanet-News] The Tiger from Africa (Soter Barreto, translated by Augusto Pinto)
The Tiger from Africa By Soter Barreto Translated from the Konkani by Augusto Pinto Alsu pulled out the bit of beedi that was stuck behind his ear and after carefully wiping it, put it in his mouth. Striking a matchstick he lit it and took a deep drag and as he did this his decayed teeth could be seen. Truth to tell, those rotted teeth and his beedi-end seemed made for one another. Alsu was a paddekar, a coconut plucker from the village. Today's harvest of coconuts had been good. After going home and having a thorough bath, Alsu set out for Kistu's gadhi. Today he had something special to ask Kistu. Hang on there! Did I say Kistu's gadhi? Arrecha!! In olden times it was alright to call it a gadhi but in our day and age to call it so was not just a sin but a cardinal sin; for like other gadhis it had transformed itself into a bar -- 'Bar and Restaurant Vailankanni'. But for Alsu and the other paddekars and manual labourers of the village it remained Kistu's gadhi like the old days. They would gather there and chit-chat about this and that as they had their drinks and thus would pass their time. But one thing was different -- the Bar was run by old Kistu's son who had been also named Christopher, or Kistu for short, after his father. As I was saying earlier, Alsu had something to ask Kistu, a sort of nagging doubt about which only Kistu was capable of throwing light. That was because Kistu was the treasure-chest of all the little and large secrets of the village as well as a perennial spring of a variety of information; one day the waters of Kesarval and Torsam springs might cease to flow but our Kistu's spring of news would never dry. Reallly speaking, Alsu was a bit of a funk by nature but still, today he had firmly resolved to clarify the issue. For that reason he first needed to moisten his throat and warm his belly. Hence to give himself courage he placed his order, Kistu, one pav of alem for me please! Holding the pav Kistu stretched his arm out for a bottle of soda, but Alsu stopped him, No, no!! Today I won't have a soda. My throat's beginning to itch a bit -- I think I'm getting a cold. Alsu slowly steered his rudder askew: could he tell him that what he wanted to ask needed some courage, which was why he was taking his drink neat. Xi - that would be too embarrassing! Alsu gave an appraising stare at the strongly built and smart Kistu who had the looks of a Hindi film hero, as he threw his glass back and took a big swig of his alem. You could almost see from the expressions on Alsu's face how the liquor was making its fiery course down his throat, through his gullet and into his stomach. “Xi - Kistu, your alem is pretty strong re!” - were the words Alsu managed to utter after emitting a sharp cough and massaging his throat. “What is this you say, Alsu-bab! Can I give you just any ordinary stuff? The alem I gave you is really mature. I kept it aside for my regular customers,” said Kistu, increasing the proof of his alem, his ginger flavoured coconut feni, as he spoke. One thing for sure: if anyone in the village wanted local or even imported liquor, then it would be available with Kistu. There was a time when whenever the village's biggest landlord or vhoddlo bhatkar -- Afrikanist -- wanted branco, tinto, cognac, whiskey, he'd supply it at his doorstep. In many ways Kistu by nature was very helpful. When Afrikanist bhatkar was abroad, he used to even look after his house and property. Besides he was the bhatkar's neighbour. It was only of late however that he had become a little estranged from Afrikanist. And the information that Alsu wanted to know, was precisely about Afrikanist bhatkar! Just then two of his fellow paddekars, Ruzai and Sodu entered and sat at his table. Seeing them Alsu felt even more confident. The pav of alem had settled in his belly by now and it was rapidly getting warmer. By this time one could hear the sound of music playing. Sodu said: Looks like there's a party at Afrikanist bhatkar's place. This music we can be hear, and those pik-pik lights as well, are from their house. Hearing this Ruzar quietly glanced at Kistu while Sodu grabbed the reins, It's because of Afrikanist's baby boy -- every other day they throw some party or the other to celebrate. And the amazing thing is he's nearing 80 years old, it seems. Alsu had been only waiting for an excuse to shove his finger in. He had heard a few things about the story of Afrikanist bhatkar's, but not as much as Kistu. Afrikanist bhatkar was the biggest landlord in the village. Although his name
Re: [Goanet] So then, just who is Natalie Di Luccio? (Toronto connection)
Natalie Di Luccio, is a talented Canadian. She is exporting 'Indian culture' to India. Toronto is known as Hollywood North. A favorable exchange rate, tax benefits makes, convenient location and not so unique nature mean many US films are shot and then produced here. Toronto has developed a depth and breath of artistic and technical talent suited to the business of film and TV. Talent was traditional developed in the local theater scene, which is second only to Broadway in North America. Toronto now home to one of the world most prestigious and productive film industry events, the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). --- A lesser know fact, Toronto in practice is now Bollywood West. Developing local talent and chasing foreign film production is a component of Canada's long term economic development plan. A number of Indian film producers and directors are now based here. There are a number of sound stages and production companies that specialize in Bollywood type films. Ontario is also home to a large, sophisticated and well off local South Asian audience. 'Genes add to the scene'. Each year Toronto hosts the International Indian Film Festival of Toronto (IIFFT), the International Film Festival of South Asia (IFFSA), the up and coming Punjabi International Film Festival (PIFF). Like the TIFF these highly acclaimed festivals almost always sell out. In the area where I live, there are a number of bullpen dance studios that specialize in teaching Bollywood, Bhangra, Giddha, styles of dance. These studios are cultivation the next generation of Bollywood talent. These organizations are attracting talent from cities across the US. And I talking hip-black, -white, -oriental as well as -Indians; from very young kids, young and thru to older adults. (The interesting thing is almost all of the students in the programs are doing this as extracurricular work on top of their regular studies... Not breaking into professional Bollywood dance means you can always fall back to your second choice of doctor, accountant or engineer ) Nachdi Jawani, a private Punjabi dance school I'm familiar with, is booming. Their classes across four locations are filled. Most locations fill three studios with 10 one-hour classes every Saturday and Sunday. Their recitals and competition are almost always sold out. The organization trains dancers as well as musicians and stage production people. Despite of their apparent success they still are pressed to keep their best instructors due to the competition between local schools. Canada is producing a whole generation of multi-cultural, good looking, well rounded talent. With the introduction of world cultures in the secondary school curriculum, specialized fine arts, music, dance and history at the level of higher education, and exposure to world arts and music through many festivals and via the internet, it is easy to see that Canada can become a hot bed for Indian culture. And it is also easy to understand how a Canadian Italian girl like Natalie Di Luccio can become a hit across India. Watch out India! Canada, and the the rest of the world, will be soon exporting Indian culture and talent back to India. --- Lets keep this in mind. Trade in talent and culture works both ways. Goa, likewise, is quickly becoming the epicenter for Jazz music and production in South Asia. Goa-Jazz is a fusion is developing to something quite amazing. In the past, Goan's have made careers out of singing Portuguese songs or playing pianos, violins and brass instruments well. And another observation, whether Goan's like to acknowledge his fact or not. Goa has established itself in the twentieth century being the Eden and seminal to the going development of electronic and trance music. Goa Trance is Goa's greatest contribution to world music. It is played on iPods, in dance clubs and at festivals and is heard by billions across the planet. --- http://www.theglobeandmail.com/report-on-business/toronto-poised-for-bollywood-boom/article4181707 http://www.omnitv.ca/on/en/videos/3361993842001 (Bollywood Star: Toronto Audition Craziness) http://tiff.net http://www.iifft.ca http://www.pifftoronto.com http://www.nachdijawani.com -- Albert Peres afpe...@3129.ca 416.660.0847 cell

[Goanet] Elizabeth Loftus: The fiction of memory
Elizabeth Loftus: The fiction of memory Transcript 0:11 I'd like to tell you about a legal case that I worked on involving a man named Steve Titus. 0:19 Titus was a restaurant manager. He was 31 years old, he lived in Seattle, Washington, he was engaged to Gretchen, about to be married, she was the love of his life. And one night, the couple went out for a romantic restaurant meal. They were on their way home, and they were pulled over by a police officer. You see, Titus' car sort of resembled a car that was driven earlier in the evening by a man who raped a female hitchhiker, and Titus kind of resembled that rapist. So the police took a picture of Titus, they put it in a photo lineup, they later showed it to the victim, and she pointed to Titus' photo. She said, That one's the closest. The police and the prosecution proceeded with a trial, and when Steve Titus was put on trial for rape, the rape victim got on the stand and said, I'm absolutely positive that's the man. And Titus was convicted. He proclaimed his innocence, his family screamed at the jury, his fiancée collapsed on the floor sobbing, and Titus is taken away to jail. 1:36 So what would you do at this point? What would you do? Well, Titus lost complete faith in the legal system, and yet he got an idea. He called up the local newspaper, he got the interest of an investigative journalist, and that journalist actually found the real rapist, a man who ultimately confessed to this rape, a man who was thought to have committed 50 rapes in that area, and when this information was given to the judge, the judge set Titus free. 2:11 And really, that's where this case should have ended. It should have been over. Titus should have thought of this as a horrible year, a year of accusation and trial, but over. 2:23 It didn't end that way. Titus was so bitter. He'd lost his job. He couldn't get it back. He lost his fiancée. She couldn't put up with his persistent anger. He lost his entire savings, and so he decided to file a lawsuit against the police and others whom he felt were responsible for his suffering. 2:44 And that's when I really started working on this case, trying to figure out how did that victim go from That one's the closest to I'm absolutely positive that's the guy. 2:59 Well, Titus was consumed with his civil case. He spent every waking moment thinking about it, and just days before he was to have his day in court, he woke up in the morning, doubled over in pain, and died of a stress-related heart attack. He was 35 years old. 3:20 So I was asked to work on Titus' case because I'm a psychological scientist. I study memory. I've studied memory for decades. And if I meet somebody on an airplane -- this happened on the way over to Scotland -- if I meet somebody on an airplane, and we ask each other, What do you do? What do you do? and I say I study memory, they usually want to tell me how they have trouble remembering names, or they've got a relative who's got Alzheimer's or some kind of memory problem, but I have to tell them I don't study when people forget. I study the opposite: when they remember, when they remember things that didn't happen or remember things that were different from the way they really were. I study false memories. 4:11 Unhappily, Steve Titus is not the only person to be convicted based on somebody's false memory. In one project in the United States, information has been gathered on 300 innocent people, 300 defendants who were convicted of crimes they didn't do. They spent 10, 20, 30 years in prison for these crimes, and now DNA testing has proven that they are actually innocent. And when those cases have been analyzed, three quarters of them are due to faulty memory, faulty eyewitness memory. 4:54 Well, why? Like the jurors who convicted those innocent people and the jurors who convicted Titus, many people believe that memory works like a recording device. You just record the information, then you call it up and play it back when you want to answer questions or identify images. But decades of work in psychology has shown that this just isn't true. Our memories are constructive. They're reconstructive. Memory works a little bit more like a Wikipedia page: You can go in there and change it, but so can other people. I first started studying this constructive memory process in the 1970s. I did my experiments that involved showing people simulated crimes and accidents and asking them questions about what they remember. In one study, we showed people a simulated accident and we asked people, how fast were the cars going when they hit each other? And we asked other people, how fast were the cars going when they smashed into each other? And if we asked the leading smashed question, the witnesses told us the cars were going faster, and moreover, that leading smashed question caused people to be more likely to tell us that they saw broken glass in the accident scene when there wasn't any broken glass at all. In another study, we

Here below please find a brief extract from a review via Goan author ;the London based Selma Carvalho , which will feature on a Goan newspaper (print and online ) on dates co-inciding with it's release. Please try to make it for the launch if you possibly can Any writing on East Africa is of immense interest, for it is in East Africa, that the Goan first turned into an explorer and budding anthropologist with a curious interest in unfamiliar people. It comes as no surprise, that when that flamboyant British explorer Sir Richard Burton set out in 1857, with Captain Hanning Speke, to discover the source of the Nile in Africa, he had with him two Goan cooks, Valentino Rodrigues and Caetano Andrade, who proved to be extremely valuable and hardy. Not only did Valentino often assume a leadership role during the expedition having learnt in no time a smattering of Swahili, but he had also learnt to use the chronometer and thermometer. Mervyn Maciel’s knowledge of Africa is almost encyclopaedic and his own anthropological lens is obvious throughout the book, as in this paragraph: ‘Very much on the same pattern as Lodwar, and because our lives lacked the variety of a safari, the Goan staff was encouraged to go out into the interior of the district to relax. We sometimes spent times picnicking at Lake Paradise, home to herds of elephant and buffalo, and also further afield to Loiyangalani on the lakeshore where we had to cross the Chalbi desert. [Goanet] [JudeSundayReflections] Seventeenth Sunday of the Year
20- Jul-2014 Dear Friend, Some people are forever waiting for a lucky break. If only they win the bumper lottery; if only they hit the jackpot; if only they inherit a fortune; if only they meet the right person life would be so good, they believe. Our values determine our choices and so we would need to find out what we are looking for in life. Today's readings make us question whether faith is a prime value that influences our choices. Have a discerning weekend! Fr. Jude Sunday Ref: Seventeenth Sunday - 'Have we found in God a priceless treasure?' 27-Jul-14 Readings:Kings 3: 5, 7-12; Rom. 8: 28-30; Mt. 13: 44-52; In today's first reading from the Book of Kings we are told that Solomon, when he was to be made King of Israel, was asked to make a choice by God. Instead of asking for wealth and material possessions Solomon prayed for the gift of wisdom, not so that he could sit comfortably in his palace and ponder about the truths of the universe, but he asked God for wisdom and an understanding heart, so that he could govern his people wisely. God was so pleased with his choice that he blessed him not only with the gift of wisdom but granted him wealth and treasures as well. In our understanding, a wise person is often equated with one who utters wise sayings. In the Bible wisdom is not theoretical or abstract, it is practical. It has to do with the right, and the wise way to live. Making wise choices In 1849 many people thought they knew what they wanted in life. Gold had been discovered in California. Ranchers and farmers made a frenzied dash on horses and in wagons across the continent in an effort to be among the first to harvest a crop of yellow metal. A wheat farmer in Kansas, not content with the golden grain he harvested year after year, could think of almost nothing other than leaving farm and family in search of fortune. His wife with four small children doubted that the venture could be successful. Reluctantly the farmer stayed home. One night in a dream he saw himself in a room filled with gold. After gleefully running the nuggets through his fingers, he realized he was hungry. When he looked for something to eat, he found only gold. He called for his wife, hoping to be comforted by the warmth of her love, but there was only the coldness of the yellow metal. He longed to look into the sparkling eyes of his children, but the only sparkle he saw was that of the lifeless riches. He woke with a start. In a moment's reflection he realized what his true values were. Through a dream he became a wise man, who knew and accepted his responsibilities. Charles Miller in 'Sunday Preaching' In the Gospel, Jesus describes the Kingdom of God through parables. In the first parable the kingdom of God is compared to a man who finds a treasure hidden in a field and sells everything he has in order to own it. Likewise, the kingdom is compared to a man who is searching for rare pearls and when he finds one he is ready to give up everything he owns to acquire the pearl of rare value. The two parables differ in one circumstance. The treasure is something uncovered quite by accident, whereas the pearl is found after deliberate pursuit and searching. Whichever way it comes to light, one must be ready to sacrifice everything in order to call it one's own. In other words, the kingdom of God is worth everything we have. Those who find it are truly fortunate, even if in the eyes of the world they appear foolish, in the eyes of God they are rich. The kingdom of God means to know that one is a child of God, with a divine dignity and an eternal destiny. It means to know the meaning of life, and how to live it. The chief task of life is not to be successful or even fulfilled. It is knowing how best to live in this world. Those who find the answer to this question have found the pearl of great price. The pearl of great price is not something we find outside ourselves but something within ourselves, which we discover with faith. Our priceless treasure Dale Carnegie came from a poor, but God fearing family. His father was a farmer and his mother was a village school teacher. They never had enough food to eat or clothes to wear. They were always in debt. Once, his father borrowed money from the bank for cultivation. Unfortunately, that year there was a flood and their crops were washed away. They neither had food to eat nor money to repay the bank. The bankers began to harass them. His father began to worry. He worked sixteen hours a day in the field, yet he felt no hunger; he began to lose weight. The doctor told his wife that he had barely six months to live. His mother was concerned. Whenever he went to the farm to feed the horses and milk the cows, and did not come home early, she would go in search of him, fearing him hanging on some tree. One day, when his father was returning from the farm, the bankers met him on the road
[Goanet] PUBLIC FUNDS CAN’T BE FLUSHED DOWN THE DRAIN
The Rs 17.60 lakhs spent on Narendra Modi’s May 26th oath taking ceremony was an unnecessary waste of public funds. Similarly in Goa on March 9th 2012 Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar squandered Rs 11 lakhs of tax payer’s money. In the current bad economic times austerity and fiscal accountability has to be the key guiding factor. Every paisa spent from the State exchequer has to be meticulously accounted for. A government is assessed and evaluated on its good governance and its socio economic steps to bolster the welfare of the people. It is not the glossy manifesto nor the cosmetic steps but the concrete measures taken that counts. The curb on Ministerial foreign jaunts is a step in the right direction taken by Narendra Modi but there has to be consistency and a close monitoring of all public spending. In all that it does the government must function within the framework of law and the laid down democratic principles of our Constitution. Narendra Modi’s honey moon period will soon end. He has to start delivering on the mountain of promises made and should desist from making any U turns. Re: [Goanet] Anglo Indian - Surnames
Stories of Anglos are full in Kolkata, and it's not suprising. Kolkata was the mainstay of the community, as their number was more than in any other states. Even Goans took on the grab of Goans. There were (I don't know if they still are) Goan kudds and many Goan bachelors took their families there when they got married. Take the case of Leander Paes. Very few people in Kolkata or elsewhere know he's of Goan origin. The Anglos claim him as their own because of his mother, Jennifer, who is Anglo. Very few know his father is Goan, since Vece Paes has lived in Kolkata since his childhood. Now that Leander is living in Mumbai, as a live-in partner of Rhea Pillai, the ex-wife of actor Sanjay Dutt, I am sure he calls himself a Goan. In fact, in an interview many years ago he himself said he was Anglo. I knew a few whose fathers were Anglos but mothers Goan. One of them would only talk to few in the village as they showed the felt they were highly sophiticated. These boys were not very well educated, I know for sure that one of them got married to a Goan girl who wasn't that sophisticated. The elder one was attempting to marry another Goan girl in Mumbai and I am not sure he ultimately did or not. One day I saw the girl with a man who I knew. I asked the father who the girl was and he said she's his daughter. The girl knew me partially and was quiet sky. The father didn't like the girl, as the boy wasn't gainfully employed. When the Hotel Heritage in Byculla was built, the boy got a singing job. I believe both have died. I met once a couple of Anglos in Margao who were acting tough. They were arguing with some of us at a restaurant. Despite telling them to stop their nuisance, they resorted to telling us that they weren't afraid as they were from Kolkata. They were grown-up comapred to us youngsters. I went and reported them to the Margao police station. The cops caught them and threatened them with lock-up. These Anglos shut up. Some of the Anglos showed they were superior and acted with aloofness. Unfortunately, they were called bastard children of the Raj. Byculla and Colaba had many of them. I believe their number has dwindled. There stories have been well documented, and I have read a book on their lives in Kolkata. I have seen 36 Chowinghee Lane which portrays the live of an aged Anglo. I have seen in Chowinghee and Park Lane in Kolkata young Anglos hang out. Their era has come to an end. One of my relations has married an Anglo but the man has adopted his mother grandmother's surname. There's isn't a trace of Anglo culture or traditions in them, though in their cooking one finds little traces. They have become native Kannadigas, and the grandparents and parents were working the tea estates in the Nilgiris. i have met the office-bearers of the Anglo association in Toronto many years ago. They are affable and happy-go-lucky peopl with little concern what's happening in India. They live in their own workd, and maybe some have their thoughts for India. What would Leander's daughter call herself one would like to know. Eugene

[Goanet] process to obtain ration card
Process to obtain Ration Card The Native resident Goans find it most annoying, tedious, time consuming to obtain this official document .To day multiple documents and ID cards like pan Card, Passports, AAdhar , EPIC, driving licence, senior citizens, service cards, bank books ,credit cards etc are available Consider in 1965, one could just walk in and walk out with the Ration card It was a s simple as that.I nostalgically recalled the process in a personal conversation with, Mr Antonio Piedade Moraes. He was officially in charge of issuing R.C for Municipal Corporation of Panjim on behalf. of Govt.(junta Freguesia )The personal interview in good faith with preliminary oral inquiries was all that was essential, no documentation of any sorts and the R.C was issued there and then , on the spot The forms then were printed in Roman Konkanim. MarathiEnglish One Mr Janardan Sinkre made a representation to the Govt. for his removal from the post, simply accusing him of professing his love and devotion to the Konkani language. The fact finding delegation led by Mr Tony Fernandes, then Minister In MGP Govt. did not find any illegality or Mr Moraes being lethargic in dispensing his duty . His love for konkanim, though true, could not be held against his official functioning to dislodge, terminate the excellent work carried out by him with utmost devotion love and concern , In fact Mr Tony was all praise for him notwithstanding the purported allegations of being a Konkanim protagonist and which in no way was a legal disqualification to move him out. I reminded Mr Moraes jokingly that even to this date one can get in and walk out with a ration card, provided one is willing to cough 8k to 10 K as rumours are doing rounds, He burst out into uncontrollable laughter. Besides, unnecessarily Ration Card is made an important document for all facilities, references ,services etc. The non Goans thus appear to obtain it more expeditiously and without hassles, delays, understandably for a reason The process to obtain a ration card should be stream lined without discretion, subjective interpretations, emphasis on multiple documentations and delinked as a point for reference It is the non Goans , who are also a captive vote banks, who derive maximum benefits, claiming all sorts of subsidies which are indirectly contributed by us Nelson Lopes. [Goanet] Opinion piece in OHeraldo
No thunderstorms likely this session eugene correia W ith the monsoon session of the Assembly to begin, one cannot expect many thunderstorms. The Congress, in the garb of Opposition, is in disarray. The long- time and high- profile members of this old and time- honoured party are going berserk. The party is limping, if not already down to crawling, as the innerparty travails doesn’t seem to reflect well. The parliamentary democracy isn’t moving the way it should. There’s no Opposition per se. In such a scenario the government is free to use its machinery as it pleases. Whatever little noises one hears now or will hear when the Assembly sits, will be from some of those who will get a chance to make their voices heard. The Congress seems bent on streamlining its process and put the party on the road to recovery. Its president, John Fernandes, former Rajya Sabha MP, has been given the mantle to tame this unruly beast by whipping it as bests as he can. It’s one thing to discipline a runaway organization that had its wheel fallen off during the last assembly as well as parliamentary elections because of the autocratic nature of its seasoned MLAs, ministers and office- bearers. For John to bring it under his control and manage those who show scant respect to it as a political body of note and significance and one that has served the state in whatever meaningful way is a tall order. Try as he may, he’s bound to find the going tough, nay almost impossible, to bring those facing anti- party charges to face the music. The Bharatiya Janata Party repossessed power in the last elections. In a political battle, every party wants to gain power. The BJP cashed on the mis- steps of the Congress government and the misdoings of some of its Congress leaders. The chaotic management of state affairs and the scams that sprouted from certain departments and the sloppy handling of such cases became the cause célèbre for the BJP. The BJP rightly hammered the mis- management policies of the government and drove home the point that Goa is suffering under the Congress rule. The BJP juggled the political process to its advantage. The alignment with some small parties and independent candidates neatly pushed the Congress to the outer edges of public opinion. The winning of Salcete through overt or covert support to candidates who seemed easy prey to be trapped in the BJP net was a political coup. Once the Catholic vote in South Goa was compromised, half the battle was won. The other half was duly accomplished at the hustings. Blaming the Congress for all the ills that is plaguing Goa now isn’t the answer to the problems the state is facing. No doubt the ban on illegal mining, which went on unabated from the BJP first rule and then transported itself to the Congress regime, and the time it’s been taking to resume mining, yes legal mining, are responsible factors in Goa facing financial distress. It’s good that the BJP came to power at the Centre and there’s help at hand for Goa to march ahead. The Centre’s aid in building another bridge over River Zuari is welcome and also the Goa government’s desire to have a ropeway over the River Mandovi. It’s undeniable that mining is the pillar of Goan economy, as Parrikar emphazied recently as if Goans have been suffering from amnesia, and that tourism is the second pillar that holds up Goan economy. Together, they serve as grease to the wheels of Goan economy is a fait accompli. But the way these two streams that fuel the economy is abused is a matter of great concern. Here the government should ascertain its power, instead of its ministers giving philosophical diktats on “ bikinis” and “ pub culture”. Tourism, as the team that went to Brazil, may have seen is almost identical in sea and sand countries. Goa’s harping on medical and heritage tourism is like a pie- in- the- sky proposition. However, Parrikar needs to remember that it was he who wanted illegal mining to stop. Unfortunately, mining in totality got rutted in the miasma. True, mining cannot be done away with, but it’s also true that the industry work within the constraints of rules and regulations to sustain and develop the mining sector and, at the same time, help in preventing or controlling the likely damage to the environment. When all the factors are counted in and mining resumes on clean tracks, Goa will breathe again the fresh air instead of the foul air polluted by mining. It’s sad and unfortunate that mining- effected people are undergoing hardships. But short- term pain is long- term gain. There’s rainbow overhead. In the absence of mining, the government should have devoted its energies and efforts to fast- forward its tourism plans, though one is aware that tourism has been playing its part. In the light of what happening in this sector, the tourism department’s tagline, kenna fast, kenna slow. This “ kenna” metaphor is unsound. It helps in resounding the word that Goans have been stereotyped with, and which

[Goanet] reL: So then, just who is Natalie Di Luccio? (Toronto connection)
She's good at singin Hindi songs. It was good of Chris Perry to train Usha Utupp, and Mohammed Rafi to train them for singing in Konkani. In a way, Chris also train Lorna who hardly spoke Konkani. It was all by-heart, as they say in India. So Natalie's rendering of famous Bollywood songs is remarkable. She has a melodious voice and sure she will be good in Italian. Bollywood is now big business in Canada, ever since IFFI in Vancouver. British Columbia government spent $10 million to bring it. Bollywood shows are held regularly in places such as Brampton, Mississauga and Toronto. Some years ago I attend Shreya Ghosal's show and before that attended Bombay Dreams, a rock opera. Davar has his Bollywood dance classes, and once I met a Goan girl who was teaching Bollywood dancing. I asked her what exactly is Bollywood dancing, and she was puzzled to give a straight answser. I watched the learning sessions. The students, mostly children, would shake as the actors on screen to the Bollywood tunes. Bollywood dances has no formal steps, and so it goes. Bangra music was a craze a few years ago. Since underground Bangra made such an impact in Britain with some groups who were often brought to Toronto, the Brangra beat was a ,must at some dances and weddings. Canada has some organized Bangra groups, both in Ontario and British Columbia. In fact, Bangra has flourished in many cities where sikhs have a significant population. At one time, Canada was hot destination for Bollywood movies. So much so that it was over-explored and now the trend has slowed down. I believe Vancouver will continue to host the Times International Film Award show. I am also told that the show was hosted in Canada as a sop to the South Aisan people with an eye on the elections. [Goanet] The Tiger from Africa (Soter Barreto, translated by Augusto Pinto)

[Goanet] Justice Markandey raises the storm
JUSTICE MARKANDEY KATJU RAISES STORM IN A TEA CUP Justice has made an explosive disclosure that merits through probe, so that the faith of the people in judiciary as the ultimate saviour is not shaken at the roots He asserts that the Additional Judge nearing his term should not be continued further for gross allegations. He requests the CJ for a secret probe, which is ordered on his request and is telephonic ally confirmed to him by CJ. Justice Katju avers that P.M was pressurised by then DMK Chief of the consequences of coalition Dharma through a Minister, In spite of adverse IB report, in appropriate antecedents , 3 CJ`s extended the appointment for one year at a time and that finally permitted holding of higher post for a brief period and which entitled to confirmation as a permanent judge The whole process promotion . extensions is termed as unjustified because it took two years to confirming him service. The Collegium appears to be to have indirectly succumbed to political pressure, coercion, persuasion etc. Why did the Collegiums, collude, compromise on the principles and this in spite of S.C observations on this issue including the adverse IB report ? The judge at the Madras H.C. is alleged to have deleted his adverse confidential reports and wiped the slate clean The then law Minister confirms that 18 DMK M.P belonging to S.C, S.T.`s met him in favour of the judge, who is believed to have granted bail to the DMK Chief. The law Minister denies being influenced, meeting CJ. being briefed by P.M, or seeing IB report, but under circumstances the strong flavour of political interference can be inferred if not legally proved. The CJ is not also specific about the adverse report of IB and granting extensions. Many politicians naturally seem to disagree with political perception, undesirable interference, and symptoms of corruption or coalition dharma, to shield themselves and which compulsions P.M m openly aired many a times. The timing of disclosures after 11 years and 3 years after Katju retirement has questioned his motives even though none doubts his integrity, Is it to sully the image of P.M or malign Congress and indirectly casts aspersions on Sc Judges cast a shadow on the working on the past CJ`s, judiciary, collegiums or to curry favour with the present ruling dispensation? Can Katju be accused as an accessory to wrong doing? Is he washing dirty political linen in public, when S.C has already made it public its opinion. Justice Katju has not confirmed or is conclusive on his facts, though he is willing to stand by the disclosures and face any consequences, but the discussions should be on substantive merit. He states that it is better late then never, but others feel it should have been sooner then never. The Govt, S.C. IB , CJ`s need to come out clean, respond seriously to the allegations and put the controversy at rest by not drawing blinds to block the sunlight. Let their open debate and not brush it under carpet by targeting Justice Katju that he is not a saint or that he called Allahabad judges as incorrigible or imputing motives for his late disclosures, refusing to name the judge or the Minister, Chief of coalition partner, keeping us in suspended animation, as a tactic of deviation from the core issue and dilute the seriousness of disclosures This raging public debate and controversy has focused for the need for revisiting collegiums system with its inherent weaknesses to National Judicial Commission at the earliest, purported to be transparent and free from the shackles of political interference. The veiled political interference in appointments, superseding is real and the case of resignation of Law Minister Ashwini Kumar for wetting the reports is not lost on any one though it may not be concluded as political corruption The embarrassment to all concerned at this stage is not the issue, but bending before crawling is disgraceful in the highest platforms of administration without the courage to disagree Nelson Lopes Chinchinim
