Generally it was the 100 yard dash until 1975, with
the metric 100 meters being
contested in Olympic years starting in 1932. Metrication occurred in 1976, so
all subsequent championships were at the metric distance. Hand timing was used
until 1973, starting in 1974 fully automatic timing was used.

[Goanet] Goa to Sri Lanka: From Blessed Joseph Vaz to Acharya Dharmanand Kosambi

http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/goa/Goa-to-Sri-Lanka-From-Blessed-Vaz-to-Acharya-Kosambi/articleshow/42927389.cms

Well-deserved celebration in Goa as the longstanding candidature of
native son Joseph Vaz has finally been approved for sainthood. He will
be "the first saint to Sri Lanka" but the Vatican duly noted "since
Blessed Joseph Vaz was born, educated and ordained a priest in India
and opted to be a missionary in Sri Lanka, both the countries have
special significance at his being raised to the honours of the altar."

The Benaulim-born priest, a son of Sancoale, exemplified personal
bravery in Dutch-held territories, and remained steadfast in Kandy
—administering to the afflicted of all religions — when devastating
plague chased away the king (who was his protector). These deeds
merited canonization, but there are even more interesting facets to
the man who will become Goa's first saint.

Joseph Vaz is best understood within the context of anti-colonialism
—indeed he organized the first public civil resistance to the Dutch in
Sri Lanka's history (in 1707) — whose entire career was rejoinder to
prejudices he had experienced from racist church authorities in Goa.

Vaz's story is only one part of a profound legacy of Goan
contributions to resistance and nationalist politics in what is now
Sri Lanka. About the priests among them, historian Dr Teotonio de
Souza has written, "It was an achievement of a band of Goan natives,
who were regarded as unfit for religious life, and much less for
missionary work, in a colonial set-up marked by white superiority."

All through Vaz's life, and right into the 19th century, the
colonialist church in Goa refused to admit locals to the religious
orders, strictly adhering to what historian C R Boxer called "the
doctrine of white superiority in church and state". But Joseph Vaz was
undeterred and defied the Portuguese church fathers to lead rebellious
compatriots in forming the first native congregation (in 1685), which
was later recognized as the Oratorian Institute of Milagristas of Goa.

Even while still rebuffed at home, Oratorians plunged incognito into
Sri Lanka, where they served both Tamils and Sinhalese with
distinction. Vincent do Rosario Dias (of Raia), and Caitano Pereira
(of Divar) became the first Vicars Apostolic of the island territory.
Jacome Gonsalves (also of Divar) mastered Tamil, and learned Sinhalese
from Buddhist monks at the renowned 'Temple of the Tooth' with such
facility that he is acknowledged as a lasting cultural force,
remembered as the father of Sri Lankan "Christian" literature and
liturgical music.

Goan contributions to Sri Lanka extend far beyond the priesthood.
Armand de Souza was born and raised in Assagao, but in 1907 founded
the Morning Leader newspaper in Colombo, which he used to ceaselessly
hammer the (now British) colonial regime over constitutional reform. A
founding member of the Ceylon National Congress, his advocacy is
credited with being "greatly responsible for the national awakening
among the different classes and communities of the permanent
population of the island...to a very large extent to the awakening of
the Singhalese in particular."

Joseph Vaz, Jacome Gonsalves and Armand de Souza all left their Konkan
homeland to live and die in service of what is now the nation of Sri
Lanka. The great Sancoale-born Dharmanand Kosambi visited for only a
year, but those months were a vital turning point of a most amazing
life. It was then, his translator (and grand-daughter) Dr Meera
Kosambi writes, Kosambi "was finally able to learn Pali and start
studying the core Buddhist texts" and was "formally initiated into the
Buddhist monastic order, or Sangha, as a novice".

Kosambi was a seeker exactly in the mould of his revered Gautama
Buddha: In 1899 he walked out of Goa to dedicate his life to studying
Buddhism, leaving behind his young wife, infant daughter and family
responsibility as custodian of a coconut grove.

In Bodh Gaya, he discovered that he might be able to study Pali in Sri
Lanka, and underwent extreme hardship to make his way to the island.
The effort was worthwhile. Here Kosambi began to learn English, and
became proficient in Pali, skills which later made him prized at
Harvard and Leningrad Universities.

This young traveller to Sri Lanka was alert to the ironies inherent in
the contrast to his Goan predecessors from centuries past.

>From his marvelous biography 'Nivedan' (translated from the original
Marathi by Dr Meera Kosambi)—"Father Joseph Vaz, who greatly exerted
himself propagating Roman Catholicism in Ceylon during Portuguese rule
after St Francisco Xavier, was born in the same village as I. He made
a thorough study of Roman Catholicism in Goa and went to Ceylon to
proselytize. He could not in his wildest dreams have imagined that at
the beginning of the twentieth century a young aspirant from his
native village would undergo ordeals to reach Ceylon in order to study
the religion he had taken such p

'Finding Fanny': Film Review
9:36 AM PDT 9/16/2014 by Frank Scheck

Despite its straying from the Bollywood formula, this strained comedy
displays a distressing lack of originality.

Sept. 12 (FIP)

Cast

Deepika Padukone, Arjun Kapoor, Naseerruddin Shah, Dimple Kapadia, Pankaj Kapoor

Director

Homi Adajania

Five mismatched travelers embark on a road trip to find a lost love in
this English-language Indian comedy

Indian filmmaker Homi Adajania clearly doesn't follow the Bollywood
playbook. His latest feature contains no musical numbers (save for an
end credit throwaway); maintains a fairly consistent tone throughout;
doesn't run a marathon length; and is in English, with subtitles for
those unable to decipher the accents. Unfortunately, he''s replaced
the familiar conventions with a forced quirkiness that resembles
American indie comedies at their worst. Despite its cast of Indian
film veterans including venerable Bollywood star Dimple Kapadia,
Finding Fanny quickly loses its way.

The story revolves around a road trip undertaken by five residents of
a sleepy village in Goa after local postman Ferdie (Naseeruddin Shah)
finds a letter mysteriously returned to him that he sent decades ago
to his beloved Fanny. Assuming that her lack of a reply to his
marriage proposal meant that she had found someone else, he's been
pining for her ever since.

Getting wind of the situation is the young Angie (Deepika Padukone),
who's had no small amount of romantic heartbreak herself having become
a widow on her wedding day when the groom had an unfortunate accident
involving the wedding cake. She decides to organize a road trip in an
attempt to reunite Ferdie with his lost love. Trailing along are her
former mother-in-law, the imperious Rosie (Kapadia, humiliatingly
outfitted with a massively padded posterior for would-be comic
effect); lecherous artist Don Pedro (Pankaj Kapur), who happens to
have a thing for big-bottomed women; and Savio (Arjun Kapoor), Angie's
childhood friend who's still bitterly resentful over her having chosen
someone else to marry.

Hilarity does not ensue during the resulting farcical proceedings,
accompanied by an overbearing musical score and including mordant gags
involving two corpses -- one feline and one human -- that make Weekend
at Bernie's seem sophisticated by comparison.

The younger performers are pretty but bland, while the Bollywood
veterans mug unmercifully in a hopeless attempt to wring laughs from
the strained material. There's also a profusion of bromides about the
perpetual quest for love that fail to deliver the intended poeticism.
Much like the rusty jalopy in which the characters make their journey,
Finding Fanny delivers a very bumpy ride.

[Goanet] Bogus product at Panjim exhibition : steve.dia...@gmail.com

Electricity Power Saver ? Public is taken for a ride.

Just to inform to our Goans that there is a product called Electricity
Power saver who has been sold like hot cakes in various exhibition
halls in Goa. From last two days a product being sold in exhibition at
various Halls in Goa, of a product from TWINKLE called power saver
which has 5 years warranty and it claims that the energy is saved upto
30% on the electricity bill. It is been sold for Rs.500/- promotional
charges during exhibition times and outside will costs above Rs.
1000/- or even can go upto Rs 2000/- it seems.

They have issued a pamphlet which gives details of contact numbers and
address from Mumbai.

The product claims:

i) Reduce up to 30% electrical consumption.

ii) Stabilize the supply voltage- protect your appliances.

iii) Reduce electrical overheating-protects against fire.

iv) Improve Efficiency and power factor of electrical appliances.

v) Reduce electrical waveform distortions.

This help Household products consumption which covers:

i) Air Conditioners

ii) Water Pumps

iii) Refrigerators

iv) Washing Machine

v) Mixer, Fan

vi) Tube Light,

vii) Vacuum Cleaner and other Home appliances.

My observation of the product is as follows;

i) I have bought this for Rs.500- and tested and found
that it is bogus item and that Goans are been taken for a ride.

ii) One girl at the shop has demonstrated having 4 tube
lights and the digital meter reads whether current, wattage etc is not
known and once you disconnect one by one tube light the reading falls
down thus showing the reading is decreasing. And after inserting this
product in the plug of their board also shows the meter reading also
lowers.

iii) I have asked whether there is any circuit for this board or
of the product. The answer is NO.

iv) How can you believe what kind of circuitry is wired inside
the board so that the customers can get fooled?

v) I have put the product on my board at home, and tested.
The current which was showing X reading for my washing machine and
after inserting this product the reading of current remained the same.
That means when there is no change in current the product is a failure
and I returned the product and got my money back. I said somebody
should complain for the Consumer Forum for checks and fine as I have
no time.

vi) How can all the data claimed by the manufacturer can be believed
without any circuitry?

[Goanet] I agree with Adv. Radharao

2014-09-19 Thread Santosh Helekar
I agree 100% with Adv. Radharao Gracias that Goans are historically,
and I would add, genetically Indian. Please see his latest article at
the following link:
http://www.heraldgoa.in/Edit/People-Edit/A-Goan-or-Central-Indian/78662.html
I have also appended it below.
That is why it is unproductive to engage in silly arguments such as we
are Goans first vs we are Indians first. Which sane and sensible
person cares about this kind of a thing? It only fuels the hate-filled
campaigns of jingoistic Hindu nationalists on one side and the rabid
anti-nationalist foreigners and separatists on the other side.
Cheers,
Santosh
Adv. Radharao Gracias wrote:
I agree with Santosh A Helekar (A Central Indian First, Herald, 16th
inst.) that Goa in its present shape did not exist prior to 1788. But
Goa whether you call it Goem, Govapuri, Aprant, Gomant, Sindabur or
any name whatsoever always existed, with indefinite boundaries.
Likewise, the Republic of India in its present shape did not exist
prior to 15.8.1947. Nevertheless, India whether you called it Bharat
or Aryavarta or whatsoever has existed with equally uncertain
boundaries, from times immemorial.
Historic India and the Republic of India are certainly not one and the
same. The India of old had nebulous boundaries and encompassed most of
what is now Afghanistan, and the whole of the present Republics of
India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal and even Sri Lanka, and perhaps
more. My contention therefore is that I am a citizen of the Republic
of India only after 28.3.1962 when the Goa, Daman & Diu Citizenship
Order came into force. There was no Republic of India before
independence and therefore no citizens of the republic.
To put it in a different context, since Goa is part of India, I am a
citizen of the Republic of India. On the other hand, Pakistan not
being part of the Republic of India, no Pakistani is a citizen of the
Republic of India. But Pakistan being part of historic India all
Pakistanis are Indians. Likewise, prior to 19.12.1961, Goans were
Indians in the historic context but not citizens of the Republic of
India. Thus to be an Indian one need not necessarily be a citizen of
the Republic of India.
The Republic of India is the not sole and universal inheritor of
historic India. All the different political entities that now exist
over the space occupied by historic India are equally entitled for the
heritage of India. Citizens of all different countries in historic
India are “Indians” and Republic of India has no monopoly.
As I have said earlier, the territory of historic India was ruled by
different kings and the boundaries of each kingdom varied. No matter
whether Goa was part of Central Indian or South Indian empires, at
some point of time, it was still part of historic and geographic
India, and will always be so. But as in the past in the future too,
the borders may change. No political entity lasts forever. We continue
to see in our own lifetime how new countries are formed, how borders
change and how some countries have simply disappeared. No matter what
happens to the Republic of India, Goa will continue to exist and will
always be part of historic India.

[Goanet] My birth, a miracle of Bl Joseph Vaz by Fr. Cosme Jose Vas das C N e Costa

2014-09-19 Thread john desa
Blessed Joseph Vaz first Goan Saint

VATICAN CITY/PANAJI: Bending Vatican rules once
again to bypass the usual requirement that a second miracle be confirmed, Pope
Francis on Wednesday signed off Blessed Joseph Vaz as a saint.

Francis is expected
to canonize Vaz, a 17th-century Goan missionary, during his January visit to
Sri Lanka. Blessed Vaz is the patron of the Archdiocese of Goa and Daman. He is
the first Goan to be named a saint.

Another Goan,
Venerable Agnelo is also on the road to sainthood.

Vaz will be the
third saint from India. While St Alphonsa is the first Indian saint, Blessed
Kuriakose will be canonized in November this year.

Vaz was born in
Benaulim in 1651, but chose to work in Sri Lanka amid persecution of Catholics
by Dutch colonial rulers, who were Calvinists. He is credited with having
revived the Catholic faith in the country.

My birth, a miracle of Bl
Joseph Vaz
TNN | Sep 19,
2014, 12.30 AM IST
There are three processes to
beatify and canonize a person: The process of writings of the person, the
process of his/her heroic life and virtues and the miracle worked through
his/her intercession. From what my parents have kept written, and from the sworn
witness given by my mother and eight others from among my neighbours and close
relatives who saw me at birth, these are the details of the miracle, which
completed the process of beatification of Bl Joseph Vaz.

My mother Quiteria
C P de Noronha had no brother and was the last of eleven sisters, eight of whom
were married. After their marriage, my father, J Damiao da Costa settled (as
ghor-zanvoim) in my mother's house at Carona, Aldona. My mother had a defective
womb, and her first son, born in the seventh month, died within six hours of
birth. Then my sister Estefania, born on September 28, 1930, in the eight
month, of a very difficult pregnancy and hemorrhage, managed to survive and
lived to be 76. After my sister, my mother conceived three times, but had
hemorrhages resulting in miscarriages in the fourth month. This is the
background to the miracle.

My mother's second
eldest sister Henriqueta Rego, married in Verna, had two priest sons, Alvito
and Cosme Rego. Alvito, soon after his ordination, was attached as assistant to
the parish of Cortalim/Sancoale, where the devotion of Fr Joseph Vaz was just
picking up. Henriqueta, at the behest of her priest son, seeing the sorry
plight of my mother who for eight years had been crying and aspiring for a boy,
took her to Sancoale and both prayed for the gift of a baby boy. That was
around the end of March 1938. By May, my mother knew she had conceived. In
August 1938, the fourth month of her pregnancy, my mother suddenly had a severe
hemorrhage in Bangalore, where she was immediately hospitalized by her cousin,
Dr Fred Noronha, director of St Martha's, and given some medication, but
doctors predicted an abortion. In her affliction, she put her full faith in God
and again invoked the intercession of Fr Joseph Vaz. The abortion did not take
place and my mother was advised to return to Goa and remain confined to her
room.

After one month of
confinement, feeling very uneasy, she took a walk around the house. By the time
she returned to the bed, she had another hemorrhage. A doctor was called and
the situation brought under control. That was the fifth month, the end of
September 1938 and she was ordered complete bed rest. After a month of such
rest, she again tried to ease herself by getting down from the bed. Hardly had
she touched the floor, when she suffered a third severe hemorrhage. It was the
end of the sixth month. My father immediately tied her to the bed and took her
in a caminhao to Panaji Central Hospital. There gynecologist, Dr Aires D'Sa,
lecturer of the "Escola Medico-Cirurgica" of Goa was then head of the
department. He examined my mother and told her very plainly: "I cannot
save both lives, 99% both will die. I give only 1% guarantee to use all
possible means to save either the mother or the child. Be therefore
prepared". The hemorrhage persisted after that.

On November 26 my
mother's condition was very serious. D'Sa prescribed a difficult caesarean
operation to save her, and sent her eldest sister, Prof Claudiana Athaide Lobo,
to Ribandar hospital to book Dr Diogo Jose Rego, the only surgeon in Goa at
that time, who could perform a caesarean. The operation was fixed for the
morning of November 28, because 27 being a Sunday Rego did not want to operate.
On hearing of her dangerous situation, about 50 relatives and friends rushed to
the hospital. They placed a picture of Fr Joseph Vaz on my mother, storming
heaven with prayers.

On November 27,
doctors found that the hemorrhage had suddenly stopped. They were stupefied.
One of my uncles, Antonio Ataide Lobo, exclaimed to my mother that Fr Joseph
Vaz had intervened, and only his continuous intercession could save her. In the
evening, when one of my mother's cousins, Epifanio Mesquita went to see her,
she complained of birth pa

REPASSANDO:Vaticano: Papa aprovou canonização do padre José Vaz, nascido na
Goa portuguesa
Agência Ecclesia

Futuro santo foi missionário no Sri Lanka, que Francisco vai visitar em
janeiro de 2015

Cidade do Vaticano, 17/09/2014 (Ecclesia) - O Papa aprovou hoje a

   - *Plinio Maria Solimeo*

pudesse pisar naquele solo.

O Pe.

primeiros bispos.

Disfarçado de mendigo, o Pe. Vaz, acompanhado de um jovem escravo,

Hi all

As you will have heard, the creation of the Scottish Rupee will no longer
take place. Bravo Scotland. The people of Scotland have decided we are
better off as United Kingdom.

This may be an example for the doubting Thomases in Goa that we can also be
better off united with all the other states in India as at the moment we are
looked upon as the most backward state. On my part, I breathe a sigh of
relief that the price of beer will remain steady.

When I am in Goa there is the urgency in the morning to get to the
television first to watch Thomas the Tank engine and all the creativity
needed along with the big fat controller to run a railway. This is before
others wake up and get to the television for the US dollar rate and sterling
rate to the rupee.

Today, if you agree, one can invade a country by sending them their currency
to exchange with the local money until there is no more to exchange. In
return its inhabitants can be imported as slaves paying their own way and
keeping the money go round cycle going.

Dear JC

Goa is not a dry state and no liquor permit is needed hence it is a place where
the beer goes in and brains go out.   Just look at most debates and newspaper
articles of the day.

With regard to reference points, the Government of India has been trying to
bring every village in the country up to standard but in Goa . football
training in Brazil, garbage collection tuition in Germany and everywhere else.

I hope I have answered your question.

[Goanet] UK Tiatr - Oxir Rosteanchi Rundhai - Incident

2014-09-19 Thread Melvyn Fernandes
 Dear John Fernandes

Thank you for your telephone call last night, it is appreciated.   There is no
right or wrong answer, may be I should not have used “everybody went home
happier”.
You asked how long have I been involved, the caterers, and a discussion on
manners by older people and queue jumping for our national dish upsetting your
child.   Yes, I agree with you I too would be upset in the circumstances but
not surprised at the behaviour of our older people.   Even a herd of elephants
or cattle would make room and give priority for a young one at the water hole.
I must commend you and your family for travelling long distance and bringing
your child with you to our cultural event unlike other parents who allow their
children to lose their identity to England’s mongrel society and all of pond
life.   As I look around me I see our young people completely stoned  with no
direction and do not know their ass from their elbow.   I will try and answer
your questions please click on the attached link.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wETzHqMf7PE

I have been involved with our community in England since 1974.   Sorpotel, as I
explained is a peasant dish and brought to Goa by peasants from Portugal where
our local people added soro hence the name sorpotel.   If this is a peasant
dish in Portugal and our king dish in Goa what does that make us?   Hence I can
understand the behaviour of queue jumping and peasant mentality and manners.

Below is part of an article I wrote about sorpotel on goanet a while ago:

Quote
The highlight of such village feasts (as well as weddings, christenings,
Christmas) is our cultural top dish of sorpotel. Look at the placing of this
dish at the top of the Goan menu against what I have been given to understand
it was one of the dishes eaten mainly by Portuguese peasants and subsequently
imported to our shores when they arrived in Goa over 500 years ago. This story
looks plausible by the very ingredients used in sorpotel, random pieces of meat
boiled, then cut up into small pieces, fried and then heavily spiced to make it
tasty. I guess in the last century these pieces of meat would have been scraps
of meat from the Portuguese rich man's table, or from parts of the animal they
did not wish to use (another popular dish in Goa till today is brain cutlets).
The masses of our people whose taste buds are tantalized by this top dish has
led to one of my friends nicknaming them the 'pilau and sorpotel crowd' as
there is no intellectual or academic dialogue in the absence of soro, music and
dancing. At such gatherings people tend to wear their Sunday best, gold
jewellery, rolex watches, designer sunglasses and forget about their worries
until the next event.

In her book "Los Viejos", on pages 94 and 95 Grace Halsell noted much the same
observation in the USA "My friend Roscoe Dixon had told a story about black
slaves in the southern United States being given all "leftovers", such as "pot
likker" drained from collards and throw-away beef bones, gizzards, hearts and
liver. "And the slaves were getting stronger and the plantation owner was
getting weaker." The rich often have thrown out the nutritious elements when
they discarded organ meats, bones and the water in which vegetables were
cooked." This mirrors our people who have migrated from Goa to western
countries forming the new labour market and carrying traditionally dishes with
them keeping them strong physically.

Unquote

I am sure your experience is not unique and can be mirrored at all our events.
Maybe readers of this article can come up with suggestions of how best to
create harmony between organisers of events, caterers and guests so people come
happy and go home happier. On the whole you will agree with me that Oxir
Rosteanchi Rundhai was indeed good value for money and entertainment.    I will
pass your comments to the Pilar Fathers and Goan Chaplaincy when I next meet up
with them.

With best regards.

Marshall is right. I did mix up Dr. Owen Pinrto with Lavy Pinto. I have
never met Lavy and neither have seen him run. As a contemporary of Mary
D'Souza, Lavy was a big name in athletics in the 50s.
Dominic has given a good write-up. I recently got an emal from Mary's
daughter how to go about asking the government to honour Mary on the
promise to plrovide her state recognition.
I informed her to get in touch with Sports Council of Goa and the Sports
and Youth Affairs ministry. I think evern Lavy should be honour likewise.
The Goa government should be stimulated to do recognize the past heroes of
Indian sports.
They should also honour Neville D'Souza, the only footballer to score a
hat-trick at the Olympics, his borther Dereyk and legion of others who
represented India. Time the government is serious about giving some living
and those dead pride of place in the sporting history of Goa, though some
of them were born outside Goa and shone in their respective field for some
other states.
