Dariaveler or dariadeger, (seaside) as mentioned in Gurunath Kelekar's
English Konkani dictionary would also do. However in practice most people
simply say 'beach'! As in Arre beachir ia re? Borrowing words from other
languages is quite a legitimate way to enrich a language.

I think that the Brahminical urge to make the language 'pure' will only
make the language poor.

Along with vell' from vello (demarcates boundary between two earth
elements: sea and land, earth and sky, ) (FN: “Vel'ler“), we should
continue to use praio/praer/praieo too as a loan word. Some do and that is
good. Its time to wrap our heads in a better way

“Doria-dege” is used by those who tend to explaining an object by putting
representative elements. All good and communication continues. Yet, often
used by those who would sit at the edge of the water for their annual
immersion (feet usually) in sea water.

It will help if one tries making complete sentences.
Will you walk the beach with me.
Lets visit the beach.

[Goanet] Article: two Konkani legends proved that music is truly ageless (Brampton, Ontario)

2014-10-12 Thread Albert Peres

http://www.daijiworld.com/news/news_disp.asp?n_id=268631#.VDaPwwI26OA.twitter

:: Original article includes good photos ::

Brampton (Canada), Oct 8: Performing before scores of Konkani music fans
at the magnificent Rose Theatre, Brampton recently, two Konkani legends
proved that music is truly ageless. And that, despite being
septuagenarians, they could leave their fans blown out of their minds!

Their scintillating performance had most of the audience dancing in the
aisles, and many speechless. Lorna kicked off the show with her
spectacular singing. Her voice is as powerful, as it is enticing.
Henry’s classical style of singing was as beguiling as his dancing.
Lorna set the stage on fire with her powerful renditions, belting out
her all-time favourites, holding the audience completely spell-bound,
Henry swayed his hips, did some quick costume changes and sang to a
crowd that was ready to take a nostalgic trip with him.

The three-and-a-half-hour concert got an electrifying start with the
Radio Mango Team, comprising Gerry D’Mello, Marshal Fernandes, Nifa
Alphonse, Wilson D’Souza and Milena Marques-Zachariah singing the
Opening Chorus, set to the Radio Mango signature tune, composed by
Lawrence de Tiracol.

With Wilson and Milena emceeing the show, every performance and skit
followed each other with clockwork precision. The skits by Santhu and
Monthu (Santosh D’Souze and Ronnie Monteiro) and Marshal Fernandes,
Samson Santimano and Serah Barbosa sent the audience into a tizzy of
hilarity and fun.

One of the highlights of the evening was the short yet powerful speech
delivered by the chief guest of the day – Akhilesh Mishra, Consul
General of India. He extolled the virtues of the Konkani language, while
praising the unique musical and singing abilities of the Goan and
Mangalorean communities. He made a commitment to help these communities
realize their potential here in Canada.

The Goa Amigos, the band comprising versatile and accomplished
musicians, and led by Norman Cardozo for Lorna and Joyson D’Souza for
Henry, rocked the stage and the audience. They accompanied the artistes
with their noteworthy professionalism and talent.

As the evening wound down, people’s enthusiasm climbed up. They wanted
more, and Lorna obliged. The audience showed their appreciation by
giving the performers a standing ovation. At the magnificent Rose
Theatre, that sounded thunderous. Later, the two artistes were mobbed
for autographs and CDs.

Goans and Mangaloreans went home awe-truck, vowing they had never seen
anything like this before. It was, indeed, a fitting tribute to Lorna
and Henry – the two legends who came together for the very first time
and gave the audience performances that will be talked about for years
and generations come.

[Goanet] RELIVING LIFE FROM THE JAWS OF DEATH

2014-10-12 Thread Aires Rodrigues
Today would have been my 6th death anniversary. On 13th October 2008 while
I was relishing the famed Chicken Xacuti at the Ashok Restaurant in Panaji
a gruesome attempt was made by an armed gang of seven who had come fully
ready to dispatch me to heaven or maybe to hell. It was, however, a very
incredible miraculous escape from the jaws of death. My time may have not
have been up. Fighting injustice is no easy task. One faces a backlash of
crank calls, vicious anonymous letters and more seriously the risk of an
attempt on one’s life.

Over the last 40 years of fighting against injustice, nobody has been able
to intimidate me. I have never been cowed down by any threats of
consequences that I have had to face for speaking out fearlessly.

Over the years I have never hesitated to take on the powerful and mighty
over a wide range of issues. Be it the Governor of Goa on the Right to
Information Act or the High Court Judges attending private dinners with
Advocates, I have never shied away from pursuing a whole range of issues
involving senior politicians to well-connected bureaucrats. Even that October
13th 2008 brutal attempt on my life has not cowed me down.

I have had nothing personal against anyone about whom I have raised issues
over the years. When highlighting an issue, it is bound to hurt some
individuals. Have I hurt one too many? One has to have the spine to speak
out against things that are wrong. I will continue to highlight any
injustice that I see. Nothing shall deter me and my commitment in this
regard. The risk of having one’s fingers chopped is a small price one may
have to pay in the bigger battle against corruption and injustice.

I am content that over the years I have been able to help a lot of people
without being a Panch, Sarpanch, MLA or MP. One does not have to hold any
position to serve those seeking justice. In recent years the Right to
Information Act has been a big aid and a very handy tool in fighting for
what is right and exposing the rampant corruption.

Looking back over the last four decades, I do not regret having taken up
any issue I did. At times one pays a heavy price in fighting public causes
but one needs to maintain the spirit and keep on fighting. Life is a very
short voyage, a journey, the end of which we know not. So let’s keep up the
big fight.

arose for many disjointed reasons.

[Goanet] PROSPECTS FOR LUXURY RETIREMENT FACILITIES IN INDIA

2014-10-12 Thread Bahrain Goans
Greetings To You !!!
I am forwarding an email from one of our community member, who is seeking
assistance to complete a survey as part of his studies.
The survey takes about 15 minutes and you need not give your personal
information.
You may also forward it to your friends and relatives as it would further
assist our member in his studies.
Thank you in advance for your kind assistance.
God bless and regards,
GR CrastoEditorXit-KoddiE-newsletter of Bahrain Goans.

Dear Sir/Madam,

We are a group of Manchester Business School MBA students who are conducting a
survey on
‘high-end retirement facilities’ in India.

As you are aware, the
number of people over 60 years of age is set to exponentially rise in India due
to a number of factors, such as, better living conditions, health-care
facilities, changing food habits, etc. Further, our fast paced lives have led
to the emergence of nuclear families with joint families rapidly
disintegrating. Our parents and near ones who have retired some years
ago are left to fend for themselves. There are also those of us who have spent
most of our lives abroad and are planning to retire back in India.

The aim of our survey is
to enable us to consider whether a ‘high-end retirement facility’ is
a need for the retirees and soon
to be retirees, examine the trends shaping the retirement landscape and make
comparisons with existing retirement
facilities in India.

We would like your help in conducting an accurate and successful study. Your
participation is critical to the success
of our study. We ask that you participate by clicking here to complete the
survey. The survey is completely anonymous and will take about 15
minutes to complete. Please use the survey navigation buttons only, and
not your browser buttons or the enter key, to complete the survey.

All responses will be
kept in strict confidence. Data from each respondent will be combined with the
data from other respondents; no individual data will be used
or disclosed.

The survey will remain
open until 15 November 2014.

We thank you for
participating in this study and for your help in making it a success.

Sincerely,

Juweria

[Goanet] World goes green with bio cremations

Oct 07 2014 : The Times of India (Mumbai)World goes green with bio
cremationsKounteya SinhaLondonAfter US Canada, Europe Set To Okay Chemical
Hydrolysis For Disposal Of BodiesBio cremations — a practice that ensures that
the human body is turned into a liquid and not ashes — is all set to be
legalized in parts of Europe. At present, the only legal way to cremate the
dead in the continent is to exhume the body or bury it.Belgium and the
Netherlands are contemplating allowing the mass use of bio cremations which has
been legalized recently in the US and Canada.
The process is also known as chemical hydrolysis — an environmentally-friendly
alternative to present day trend of the disposal of bodies. The technology
replaces the use of flame with the utilization of water, blended with an alkali
solution of potassium hydroxide (KOH).
The process uses 95% water and 5% alkali instead of direct flame and fossil
fuels to cremate human remains.
The body is placed in a stainless steel cremation chamber where water, an
alkali additive, heat and pressure are added. The body is reduced to bone
fragments and a sterile solution that is recycled to the earth.
The average adult body takes approximately 2-3 hrs to complete a bio-cremation.
Upon completion of the cremation cycle, bones are dried and processed to a
powdery substance which is then placed in an urn and given back to family.
Bio cremation is an environmentally friendly option as it uses less energy and
releases less carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. It also uses eight times less
energy than traditional flame based cremation.
The practice is being pushed by the Flemish funeral sector in Belgium while the
Dutch parliament too is discussing the possibility of making it legal.
In 2011, a Florida funeral home became the first in the world to perform a bio
cremation and since then, over 3,000 people in the United States have chosen
the procedure.
The decision will soon be taken by the European Council.
