[Goanet] GALF 2014 in Herald: Australian Aboriginal author and activist Dr Anita Heiss
Dr Anita Heiss was the first to introduce Koori chick- lit in Australia. She will be visiting next month to talk about her work. LISA ANN MONTEIRO Australian Aboriginal author and activist Dr Anita Heiss engineers social change through her writing. She writes to bring communities together. The indigenous population in Australia hardly found representation in mainstream literature. Heiss, a proud member of the Wiradjuri nation of central New South Wales decided this needed to change. It was time to begin putting her people on the Australian identity radar. Chick lit - often dismissed by literary critics- she finds, is the most accessible literary style that allows her to engage with an audience that is not otherwise engaging with indigenous Australians. She doesn’t believe history can only be learnt from non- fiction books and text books. The protagonists in her books are young indigenous urban women who juggle romance and careers. Her books Not Meeting Mr Right, Avoiding Mr Right, Manhattan Dreaming and Paris Dreaming have all the elements of a chick lit book but with something more- an Aboriginal’s perspective. Heiss writes about relationships that connect women and also touches on issues and politics that are important to her. Her novels discuss black deaths in police custody the stolen generations, the Northern Territory Emergency Response intervention, indigenous intellectual property and copyright, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander arts and culture around the country and issues of identity. They also have references to indigenous artists, film makers and writers. In Manhattan Dreaming, Lauren a Wiradjuri woman is a curator at the National Aboriginal Gallery ( fictitious) in Canberra. She is passionate about indigenous art and smitten with Adam, the star forward for the Canberra Cockatoos. He is quite the player and when she applies for her dream job at the Smithsonian, her dream comes true. She is then torn between Man and Manhattan and has to make a decision. Heiss says she uses chick lit as a tool to reach women who may never have met, worked with or thought about. “ We talk a lot about what makes us different in Australia - to the point of instilling a fear of difference in each other. I like to talk about what makes us the same as human beings – particularly the emotions we experience; love, fear of rejection, sympathy, empathy and so on. If we consider what makes us the same in terms of being women, then it's much easier to talk about what makes us different and then we can start to really get to know each other, to engage on a meaningful level and even find a sense of peace in an otherwise chaotic world,” she told Herald Review. Heiss was the first Aboriginal student to graduate with a PhD in Communications and Media from the University of Western Sydney. She is also among the first women of colour to write into commercial women’s fiction in the country. Heiss’ mother was born on Erambie Mission Cowra in Wiradjuri country while her father was Austrian from Salzburg. She says her grandmother was among the stolen generations of indigenous Australians taken away from their families and placed with a foster family, part of a government policy to try to assimilate Aboriginal children into white families. She also wrote Who Am I? The Diary of Mary Talence, Sydney, 1937, a fictional diary of a young aboriginal girl from the stolen generation. In 2009 Heiss along with eight other Aboriginal people took columnist and political commentator Andrew Bolt to court for two articles ‘ It’s so hip to be black’ and ‘ White fellas in the black’ published in the Herald and Weekly Times. His column implied that lightskinned people identified as Aboriginal only for personal gain. His articles Heiss said discredited her professionally and insulted and humiliated many others. Bolt mentioned Heiss made a decision to be Aboriginal…’ which ‘ was lucky, given how its helped her career’ also stating that she won jobs reserved for Aborigines. In 2011 the Federal Court ruled that Bolt had breached the Racial Discrimination Act. Bolt outside the court described the verdict as ‘ a terrible day for free speech in this country’. At the time Heiss was penning the book ‘ Am I Black enough for you?’ She was 43 and people said she was too young to write a memoir. She felt the story of her identity wasn’t something that was going to change as she got older. The need for it to be told had proved more necessary in recent years. The book just like her novels is a statement that “regardless of where we live we are strong in our identity, and it is one of the few things that can never be taken from us- unlike governments taking away our children, our rights, land and most recently the rights to manage our own incomes in the Northern Territory.” “ Through my book I wanted to demonstrate that we as Aboriginal people have our own forms of self- identification and self- representation. My book offers alternate realities
Re: [Goanet] Cell phones and brain tumours
People continue to have irrational beliefs and fears even after science has answered many questions once and for all. For example, many left-wing and right-wing adherents believe that vaccinations are harmful to children. About 40% of Americans believe that the earth is less than 10,000 years old. 50% believe in various medical conspiracy theories. A significant number of people still believe that the earth is flat. It is a common observation that when people who prefer to stick to their faith-based beliefs and ideologies despite evidence to the contrary always resort to platitudes such science is not the last word, science does not know everything, etc. The truth is in the present case, common sense, let alone science, has the final answer. If cell phone use has gone up from nothing to more that 90% of the population even in poor countries with absolutely no increase in incidence of brain cancer or any particular type of cancer, then cell phone use is not a cancer-causing public health problem. Any educated rational person should accept this fact. First priority is selfish interest of profits, be they personal, industrial of of the Nation. Scientist and FDA as seen are faking and manipulating results, and our many so called scientists are become sycophants to the system. Their constant argument will always be, there is no peer reviewed research that confirms what you say. [Goanet] Fwd: Chinedu nets brace in Vasco victory
Chinedu nets brace in Vasco victory Chinedu Emmanuel Ejidgu netted a brace as Vasco Sports Club edged past Sporting Clube de Goa 3-1 in Gfa’s Goa Pro League at Duler Stadium, Mapusa on Tuesday. Vasco led 1-0 at the breather. Sporting Goa dominated the opening exchanges, but could not penetrate in the final third of the field. Naveen Mendes opened the scoring for Vasco on the half hour mark when he capitalised on a mistake in the Sporting Goa defence to drive the ball home. Changing over, Vasco managed to double their lead through a corner when Chinedu poked the ball in with his head. A resilient Sporting Goa went all out on the attack and fought their way back into contention when the Vasco custodian failed to deal with a cross at the back post, which allowed Boima to smash the ball home and pull a goal back for the Flaming Oranje. Three minutes into injury time, as Sporting Goa pushed men forward in search of the equalizer they got caught on the break as Chinedu struck again for Vasco. -- CONNECT WITH US: www.sportingclubedegoa.com www.sportingclubedegoa.wordpress.com www.facebook.com/sportingclubedegoa.officialpage www.twitter.com/sportingoa -- CONNECT WITH US: www.sportingclubedegoa.com www.sportingclubedegoa.wordpress.com www.facebook.com/sportingclubedegoa.officialpage www.twitter.com/sportingoa

If this type of empty cynicism had taken root in our society we would not have seen any progress. We would still be in the dark ages. Today science and technology are advancing at unprecedented pace. Humankind is reaping huge benefits from this progress. Cell phones are a great example of this. Every vocation big and small is prospering as a result of them. Carpenters, bricklayers, housemaids, caterers, general practitioners, all have cell phones and are making good use of them in their business, helping themselves and all others in the process. [Goanet] Are Christian Gawdas Slaves?
On 16 November Joao Fernandes who is an advocate and tribal activist wrote a letter to Goanet (reproduced belowa0 where he complained about how the Gawdas, a tribe which can claim to be one of the original Goan settlers have been treated as slaves for centuries. He points out that both the State and the Church had colluded in keeping them subjugated. He reminds us that the attempts of the Church to brings to destroy their culture. has continued after Liberation. He further brings to our notice that one priest named Fr Natolino Fernandes is even today attempting to destroy the culture of these Gawdas by browbeating and threatening Gawda women with dire consequences if they do not abandon their traditional cultural activities performed at the Maand. I believe that this cultural terrorism is highly condemnable and violates the human rights of the Gawdas. It should be forthwith stopped. I am quite shocked that despite three days passing since he made this appeal, not a single letter of support for the Gawdas from anyone has appeared on Goanet. I appeal to all to raise their voices against the cultural violence and atrocities, indeed cultural genocide being committed against the Christian Gawda community.. Augusto Pinto http://permalink.gmane.org/gmane.culture.region.india.goa/157941 Are Christian Gawdas of Goa are the slaves of the catholic church or its priest? Christian Gawdas which has been declared as Schedule Tribe along with the other Tribes of Goa have their specific culture, their ethos, their life style. From the studies it reveals that the catholic Gawdas among the other Tribal communities of Goa are the most backward economically, socially and educationally and the most voiceless community in Goa. There are so many reason for this, it appears that the Christian Gawdas of Goa have been treated as slaves by the high caste including the religious institutions to which they belongs to and History is witness to it. The unique culture the Gawdas have preserved even during the dictatorship of the state that is during the Portuguese regime when the church and the state was working hand in hand. But after liberation of Goa or when democracy has been introduce the church has destroyed the cultural heritage of Gawdas. Is it because the modern church in Goa considers it is the master and the Gawdas are its Slaves. It is history that slaves haves no right to preserve their culture, they to behave as per their master, they have no freedom. In support my above contention I hereby site one example. There is a traditional mand at Quineabhat Avedem Quepem belongs to the Gawdas, which is still alive. The Avedem Group has spread the culture of the Gawdas across the borders of Goa and even beyond the borders of India. This they could do because of the existence mand. As Amelia Dias who is the leader of the group puts it “ that because of playing on the mand we could get artist without training and thus we could keep our cultural group for 4o years”. But the latest development in Avedem is that the young assistant priest Fr. Natolino Fernandes, who have been appointed at Paroda church, being young who want name and fame and may be want fast promotion and who is the follower of Fr. Luis Countinho, ( the same priest Fr. Luis Coutinho was responsible for the destruction of the rich Cultural heritage of the Gawdas at Ambaulim when he was newly appointed at Ambaulim only with a motto to get name and fame) is propagating that the Gawdas should not light their traditional lamp on the tradition mand, they cannot brack coconut on the mand, they cannot sang certain songs at the mand, indirectly they cannot perform Dhalo at the mand. He has even took some of the ladies in the church and had taken a vow of not playing Dhalo at the mand, and even threatened them of dire consequences it they disobey. To dictate such things, are the Gawdas slaves of the church/priest and the church/priest are our dictators? The church or its priest may be considering so. From the behavior of the church/priest it appears so. This is against article 29 of the constitution of India which is the supreme law of the land which article guarantee cultural freedom. But it appears that we are in dictatorship rather than in democracy and the religious dogmas are supreme then the law of the land. This is a big question to be answered by all the likeminded.

[Goanet] Goa's Common Man - Manohar Parrikar profiled in India Legal
http://indialegalonline.com/goas-common-man/ Goa’s common man This tiny state’s first-ever cabinet minister has many similarities with Modi. His performance as CM provides a salutary lesson in what to expect from Modi’s Prime Ministership By Vivek Menezes Manohar Parrikar has been a behind-the-scenes powerhouse in the BJP ranks for over a decade, as well as one of the most prominent and long-time supporters of PM Narendra Modi. But most Indians’ first impression of the genial, salt-and-pepper-haired Goan politician came from the tears that welled up in his eyes during the press conference announcing that he had accepted the job of defense minister. “It is very difficult for me to leave the state,” he said, “I will go with a heavy heart.” Parrikar’s promotion into the highest echelons of national politics has been predicted and expected ever since the BJP won its sweeping mandate earlier this year. Part of the reason is his reputation for integrity: India’s defense ministry is the world’s largest arms importer, and scams and scandals have plagued it for decades. Another big factor is the IIT-Bombay graduate’s administrative competence and efficiency, virtues that Modi has sought to project as talismanic in his governance. But the main reasons for Parrikar’s rise to the center as Goa’s first-ever cabinet minister can be found in the multiple synchronicities and connections between his career and the unexpected rise of Modi within the BJP and then across India’s electoral landscape. It is his relationship with Parrikar that has led the PM to repeatedly refer to India’s smallest state as a kind of personal lucky charm (his first visit outside Delhi as PM was to Goa). And the Modi wave in Indian politics was presaged identically by a Parrikar-led BJP wave in Goa. OLD CONQUESTS Manohar Gopalkrishna Prabhu Parrikar was born in 1955 in Mapusa, a bustling market town in North Goa, when it was still part of the Portuguese Estado da India. That part of Goa belongs to the Velhas Conquistas, the “Old Conquests” which constitute the very first European intrusion into Asia, and remained a Portuguese territory from the early 16th century right till 1961. That’s when Nehru finally lost patience with negotiations and sent in Indian troops to conquer and annex the last remaining colonial “teardrop on the face of India”. Goa’s laureate Bakibab Borkar wrote about his countrymen at the time: “The kinship and co-operation forged unto them by the aesthetic impact of Goa’s rich scenery taught them the art of living in peace and friendship, and inspired them to strive for nobler ideals. They amalgamated into a single society, with one common language and one cultural heritage.” But the political climate after 1961 laid bare deep divisions and sectarian conflicts. Despite Nehru et al, the Congress found no support—Goans simply did not share the same history as the rest of India. Instead, two regional parties fought for control: the Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party (MGP) with massive support from the previously disenfranchised rural majority (and a mandate to seek merger with Maharashtra), and the United Goans Party backed by most Catholics (which sought to preserve Goa’s unique identity). Interestingly, the MGP held power for almost two decades (Catholics are only 30 percent of the state population), but the merger for Maharashtra was defeated in a historic referendum that paved the way for Goa to become a state. All through Manohar Parrikar’s childhood, in a pattern that persists today, many of the top schools in Goa had links to the Catholic Church. His parents, like many other Konkani Brahmin families, sought to underlie the Catholic school education with a bedrock of Hindu revivalism via the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS)—at the time still a Konkani-speaking Chitpavan Brahmin-dominated organization. Even before he got into IIT, Parrikar had become a mukhya shikshak (chief instructor). Goa became a state in 1989, the same year he returned from Bombay to become a very young sanghchalak (local director). Just five years later, in 1994, he was elected to the legislative assembly, where he has dominated the proceedings ever since. SQUABBLING FACTIONS At that time, Goa’s politics were a national laughing stock. Desertions and government collapses were routine. Between 1990 and 2002, 13 separate governments ruled the state. A free-for-all prevailed as squabbling factions and a deeply cynical Congress overlooked the quiet, steady emergence of the BJP. First, Parrikar had only four colleagues with him in the legislature. By 2000, when he became chief minister for the first time, there were more than a dozen. In 2002, the BJP won 17 seats, and Parrikar emerged as the paramount politician of his generation in Goa. Though he later lost the CM's chair to another set of defections, and led the BJP to defeat against the Congress in 2007, Parrikar retained tremendous support across the state. He

I reiterate that although science has helped mankind to grow and develop, science is not the end and does not have answers to everything. This is what Science caused over 50 years ago. Those who believed in it are suffering till today. https://www.google.co.in/search?q=thalidomideespv=2es_sm=93tbm=ischtbo=usource=univsa=Xei=yzFsVIXELKG8mQWc64LgCwved=0CD0QsAQbiw=1366bih=667 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TOdKe9PzKB0 Regards, Marshall *People continue to have irrational beliefs and fears even after science has answered many questions once and for all. For example, many left-wing and right-wing adherents believe that vaccinations are harmful to children. About 40% of Americans believe that the earth is less than 10,000 years old. 50% believe in various medical conspiracy theories. A significant number of people still believe that the earth is flat. It is a common observation that when people who prefer to stick to their faith-based beliefs and ideologies despite evidence to the contrary always resort to platitudes such science is not the last word, science does not know everything, etc.The truth is in the present case, common sense, let alone science, has the final answer. If cell phone use has gone up from nothing to more that 90% of the population even in poor countries with absolutely no increase in incidence of brain cancer or any particular type of cancer, then cell phone use is not a cancer-causing public health problem. Any educated rational person should accept this fact.Cheers,Santosh*
