Re: [Goanet] Celebrating 50 years of the Kenyan Republic (and Goan contributions thereof), December 5 at GALF

Dear Ben + Augusto et al,
It is simply a fact that "Goan contribution" to the making of modern Kenya -
including decolonization - is far disproportionate
to community numbers. Every Goan was not an anti-colonial rebel, most Goans
were not anti-colonial rebels, but that's no reason to
minimize the history of those who were.

Here it is useful to recall that decolonization in Kenya did not happen with a
whimper (as in Goa) or via a spirited nationwide
movement galvanized by world attention (as in much of the rest of India).
Instead it took place in the context of a vicious,
overtly genocidal war against the Kikuyus.

VM,
There were many Kenya's. If you interview six Kenyan or ex-Kenyan Goans today,
you will still get half a dozen different views on Kenya. This is why I always
enjoy reading views/memoirs/recollections.

50 years ago, the world had bought the view that the Mau Mau were
savages/terrorist and till this very day, people agree with that view.  Others,
figured out a long time ago that the Mau Mau were fighting to get rid of the
colonizers. Everyone in Kenya in those years prior to independence, had to take
a position. This was when some Goans excelled.

After independence the choice was to stay put or go elsewhere. Those who stayed
in Kenya, did a great job as Kenyans. Those who left, did well where ever they
settled.

I will admit though that Goans in Kenya played a much bigger role in the
struggle for independence than their counterparts in Tanzania did. Tanzania had
a few Goan MP's but their influence/contributions was nowhere close to those
made by Goans in Kenya. I don't want to stray far from the topic above but the
Goans who were politicized in E. Africa, were also in close contact with those
in Mozambique. This caused a lot of problems for the Portuguese consulates in
E. Africa, most which were run by Goans.

[Goanet] THE DOUBLE FACED MANOHAR PARRIKAR

2014-11-25 Thread Aires Rodrigues
At the ensuing by election to the Panaji Assembly constituency there will
definitely be an occasion or two for all the candidates to debate on a
common platform and face the queries of the voters. Regardless of who
Manohar Parrikar props up as his BJP candidate, he should himself stand up
on that public platform as he has a lot to answer on all his U turns and
the chaos he has left Goa in.

At the last session of the Goa Legislative Assembly Manohar Parrikar had
vowed that everything he has done in public life was above board and that
he was ready for an open debate with anyone and anywhere on the allegations
of corruption and nepotism against him.

At two public functions one in Margao and later at Panaji I had dared
Manohar Parrikar to a face off on his acts of omission and commission while
even allowing him to choose the date and venue. The Chief Minister did not
respond for he knew he would have been publicly confronted with facts and
figures backed by documentary evidence on how deeply his hands stood soiled
with endless acts of blatant corruption and nepotism committed over the
last two and half years.

While hoodwinking the people of Goa with his so called mantra of Zero
tolerance to Corruption, Manohar Parrikar chose to keep Goans distracted by
finding fault with all including NGOs, activists, the media and even
the Judiciary instead of trying to put his own house in order. He
frantically tried to keep the lid on the misdeeds of his government by
intentionally not appointing a Lokayukta and also sabotaging the
functioning of the State Information Commission.

Manohar Parrikar has been a very egoistic, self centered and revengeful
politician. We all know how over the years he has systematically sidelined
the Bahujan Samaj face of the BJP Shripad Naik. Now he has back stabbed his
college friend of decades Francis D’Souza who he foxily had made a mere
ornamental Deputy Chief Minister. The Bhai of Goa has now chosen to be the
Bhaiya of Uttar Pradesh after having fooled Goans with all that glossy talk
on Special Status for Goa.

Narendra Modi would have to take a call whether someone who has miserably
failed as Chief Minister and is so tainted could ever do justice as India’s
Defence Minister. If we could not trust Manohar Parrikar to even give the
authorities his correct residential address how can we entrust him the
country’s defence. Someone who has lied on oath and filed a false affidavit
despite being the Chief Minister is something very alarming.

Many years ago I had a lot of faith and trust in Manohar Parrikar. Over the
years seeing his acts and deeds all that trust has just waned away. Today I
can very responsibly say that Manohar Parrikar has been the most
untrustworthy and devious politician I have encountered over the last 40
years in public life, who has merely used people for his own benefit and to
espouse his hidden agenda.

I know that Manohar Parrikar’s sycophants and stooges may not like what I
have expressed. The truth cannot be masked for too long. Have always
believed in speaking fearlessly and this I shall do till my very end
regardless of the price that may have to be paid.

[Goanet] Why a British politician resigned over a pic she tweeted

2014-11-25 Thread Linken Fernandes
If you’re not British, Labour politician Emily Thornberry’s resignation for
posting a tweet of a house, some flags and a van may seem baffling. Here’s
why it happened.

Emily Thornberry’s resignation from the Labour shadow cabinet for posting
an image of a house in Rochester has provoked fury in Britain and
bafflement abroad. While political commentators in the UK were divided over
whether she should have resigned, they were fairly united in the belief
that Thornberry had committed an embarrassing and potentially devastating
faux pas.

At worst, she had shown her (and therefore Labour’s) contempt for the
patriotic working classes. According to the prime minister, David Cameron,
“effectively what this means is Ed Miliband’s Labour party sneers at people
who work hard, who are patriotic and who love their country. And I think
that’s completely appalling.”

All for tweeting this photo, with the caption: “image from #Rochester”.

So how would you explain to someone from outside Britain why Thornberry’s
position became untenable? Obviously there’s the timing, turning what
should have been a tricky day for the Conservatives – who were about to
lose another MP to the insurgent rightwing party Ukip – into one dominated
by questions of Labour snobbery. And it played perfectly into the narrative
of the main political parties being a bunch of out-of-touch metropolitan
elites. The tweet was particularly disastrous as Thornberry is MP for
Islington, an area of London long a byword for rich, bourgeois cultural and
political elitism.

But why? After all, Thornberry has a habit of taking pictures of buildings
and posting them on Twitter. The problem, as with so much of British
politics, was one of class. She had taken a picture of a working-class
home, covered in England flags: exactly the kind of home potentially
containing the kind of “white van man” voter that the Labour leadership is
accused of being out of touch with. And, some claimed, there was an air of
contempt in her choosing to tweet the image at all. This, despite Thornberry
herself being brought up in a council house.

Her case was not helped by her subsequent comments to Mail Online, who she
told: “I’ve never seen anything like it before. It had three huge flags
covering the whole house. I thought it was remarkable. I’ve never seen a
house completely covered in flags.”

The St George’s flag has a complicated history in England, and its
association with far-right politics, though fading, is still one that
resonates with some. And the idea that the flag is synonymous with
anti-immigration feeling – and that Thornberry’s tweet was drawing
attention to this – also explains why the MP got into such hot water on the
day an anti-immigration party was on course to win a byelection in the area.

“Amazing how many coded cultural messages are contained in some St George’s
flags and a white van,” said Kate Shea Baird, a political communications
adviser living in Barcelona. “It’s also common to see the flag of St George
(St George is also the patron saint of Catalonia), but here it is a benign
symbol, with none of the associations with racism or anti-immigration
sentiment it has in the UK, nor any assumed relationship with social class.

“Also, in Spain politicians often refuse to resign even when they are under
criminal investigation, so it’s easy to see why a resignation prompted by a
tweeted picture of a flag would be greeted with bafflement here.”

DAVE KOZ SHARES THE MAGIC OF THE 25TH OF DECEMBER IN A FESTIVE GATHERING OF
FRIENDS

by Rickey Minor, September 30, 2014 release features holiday duets with
India.Arie, Eric Benét, Jonathan Butler, Gloria Estefan, Fantasia, Kenny G,
Heather Headley, Richard Marx, Johnny Mathis, Trombone Shorty, BeBe Winans and
Stevie Wonder (International release dates may vary)

The holidays have always been about bringing close friends together and
celebrating the season with good times and great music. Saxophonist Dave Koz
has been doing it every year for nearly two decades with talented friends and
collaborators on a tour that brings the yuletide spirit to devoted audiences
from one coast to the other.

Koz brings that same collaborative spirit to his new holiday recording, The
25th of December, scheduled for release on September 30, 2014 on Concord
Records.  The album features duets with some of the most prominent pop and jazz
artists of the last several decades, including India.Arie, Eric Benét, Jonathan
Butler, Gloria Estefan, Fantasia, Kenny G, Heather Headley, Richard Marx,
Johnny Mathis, Trombone Shorty, BeBe Winans and Stevie Wonder.

“Christmas songs already have, inherently, in their DNA, all the things you
want in a piece of music,” says Koz. “Why do we want to hear these same songs
year after year? Because they’re more than just lyrics or notes on a page.
They’re touchstones. They are musical doorways that enable us to go back and
visit times in our lives that were much simpler and much more innocent.”

The challenge for Koz and his guests was how to mix it up on The 25th of
December and provide something for everyone. “We wanted to have a good chunk of
traditional Christmas songs that everybody knows,” he says, “and then a handful
of newer Christmas songs that maybe not everybody knows, but have become
popular in the last few years. And then it was important to me as an artist to
say, ‘Here are a couple songs that you’ve never heard before that we’re going
to throw into the mix.’”

(http://smarturl.it/25thOfDecemberiT)The result is a diverse and satisfying
holiday set, beginning with the very first notes of a fully orchestrated
instrumental rendition of “The First Noel,” a song that Koz had never recorded
for any previous holiday album, but one that he considers a personal favorite.
“In my mind, it was a way to get the party started with something that
everybody knows. It’s a beautiful arrangement by Lenny Wee.”

The follow-up track features the legendary Johnny Mathis in an upbeat
interpretation of “It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year,” one of his
signature holiday tunes. “Johnny’s original version of the song is iconic,”
says Koz. “So I was a little concerned about going to him and saying, ‘Would
you mind recreating a song that you’ve already made famous the world over?’ And
he said, ‘I’d love to.’ Being in the studio with him that day was one of the
greatest days of my career. It all came together organically. We did it with
Billy Childs on piano, Chuck Berghofer on bass and Clayton Cameron on drums. I
played, Johnny sang, and there it was.”

Things take a slow, sultry turn with “This Christmas,” the R&B holiday classic
delivered here by vocalist Eric Benét. “I’ve known Eric for more than 20 years.
He’s one of my favorite singers. We had this idea of taking this great
Christmas song by Donny Hathaway and really taking the tempo down to make it a
slow jam. I knew when Eric was in the studio that he would want to make it a
sexy Christmas song. The groove is deep, and I put a little alto saxophone in
there. It’s pretty romantic. You know exactly what’s on the singer’s mind when
Eric delivers this song.”

Gloria Estefan steps in for a rhythmic reading of “Do you Hear What I Hear?”
“Rickey Minor, our producer, said, “Why don’t we give it this beat with a lot
of drums?’” recalls Koz. “I think he was tapping into what we all know Gloria
does best. We got her the arrangement, she loved it, and she turned in a
fabulous vocal.”

“My Grown Up Christmas List” is especially meaningful for Tony Award-winning
vocalist Heather Headley, who recorded the track when she was eight months
pregnant. “This is one of the songs that’s not as well known as some of the
more traditional Christmas songs on the album,” says Koz. “It was written
several years ago by David Foster and Linda Thompson. I’d never cut it, but I
loved the message of it. We sent it to Heather, and she said, ‘I’m on this. And
by the way, I’m pregnant, so this is something I can re

Re: [Goanet] Death of Prof. Eusebio Rodrigues

2014-11-25 Thread Eugene Correia
Sad to lean about Prof. Eusebio's death. Had met him for th 1988 Goan
International Conference in Toronto and talked to him for a long time.
Tried to talk to him about his brother Prof. Lucio Rodrigues, one of the
stalwarts of the Goan Union and an authority on Goan folklore, but somehow
didn't get much out of him. Something told me that he and Lucio had
"strained" relationship.
He and Prof. George Coelho, who expired few years ago, came from
Washington, DC, for the conference and were participants in the workshops
or some sessions. Prof. Coelho also came for the conference organized
thereafte and, with Prof. Wagle, edited a book.
In fact, some months ago I wrote to Leonard of Commonweal to get in touch
with him to check who has the copyright to Lucio's book, Of Soil and Soul,
for a reprint. Late on I found out about Laura's daughter Ivy who is in
Canada when Laura died in Bombay.
Recently, a lady wrote to me from Engtland saying she is daughter of
Laura's first husband and wanted me to provide her contact with Ivy just to
be in touch as they shared a common father. She send me a photo of her
father and just a couple of days ago while browsing through my hard disk, I
found the photo.
Now that Eusebio has passed away, I think Love and Samsara need to be
republished as a ebook or book-on-demand.

Churchill Brothers Sports Club 5-0 in Gfa’s U-14 1st division League at Don
Bosco ground, Panjim on Tuesday. Sporting Goa led 2-0 at half time.

Sporting Goa raced into the lead after just 16 minutes when left back
Beevan Monteiro crept up the field and spectacularly chipped the ball over
the Churchill goalkeeper who had momentarily ventured off his goal line.

Just before the interval, Sporting Goa doubled their lead when Nikhil
Correira went on bamboozling run past three defenders, before burying the
ball with a delicate scoop.

In the second session, Sporting Goa continued to run riot with Shanon
cleanly slicing the ball into the far corner of the net to make it 3-0.

In the closing stages, Aman Govekar who was looking menacingly all
afternoon added to the tally, before Shanon completed his brace for the
Flaming Oranje.

The work for the first phase commenced on June 16, 2011
The plan of the project, main architect Tulio D’Souza, was executed in three
phases. In the first phase restoration and renovation of the Church of the Cruz
dos Milagres was taken up; in the second phase the new facility block and in
the third phase restoration of the convent and the cloister was taken up.
The foundation stone for the second phase was also laid by the Archbishop on
April 21, 2012.
The main contractor for the project was Arsenio Associates.

Each house had to shell out a minimum of 1,000
If joint family, then Rs.1000 per kitchen (as told by one villager)
Fund raising village wise
"Taleigao parish was the highest with 1.20 crore while Navelim was second with
53 lakh,"
says Fr Conceicao D'Silva, parish priest of Taleigao and head of the fund
raising committee.

Cost of whole project expected to cross 30 crores

Now that we have our own Retir or Retreat Centre, will that stop people going
to Kerala?
Only time will tell

The project has its own website, it never worked for me

[Goanet] Celebrating 50 years of the Kenyan Republic (and Goan contributions thereof), December 5 at GALF

2014-11-25 Thread V M
Dear Ben + Augusto et al,

It is simply a fact that "Goan contribution" to the making of modern
Kenya - including decolonization - is far disproportionate to
community numbers. Every Goan was not an anti-colonial rebel, most
Goans were not anti-colonial rebels, but that's no reason to minimize
the history of those who were.

Here it is useful to recall that decolonization in Kenya did not
happen with a whimper (as in Goa) or via a spirited nationwide
movement galvanized by world attention (as in much of the rest of
India). Instead it took place in the context of a vicious, overtly
genocidal war against the Kikuyus. See this interview:
http://www.extension.harvard.edu/hub/spotlight/mau-mau-rebellion-caroline-elkins-abuse-colonial-kenya,
with the author of the superb Britain's Gulag: the Brutal End of
Empire in Kenya, reviewed here:
http://www.lrb.co.uk/v27/n05/bernard-porter/how-did-they-get-away-with-it

>From that review, appropriately entitled 'How Did They Get Away With
It?' - "nearly all the references ... to ‘concentration camps’, the
‘Gestapo’ and so on come from contemporary accounts. Most were by
critics, including some inside the system, but not all. In March 1953
a British policeman wrote a letter to his buddies back at Streatham
police station bragging about the ‘Gestapo stuff’ that was going on in
his new posting in Nyeri. All this happened a few years after the war,
so such analogies came quickly to mind. The critics – many of whom had
fought against Nazi Germany – knew what they were talking about. One
relatively liberal police chief in Kenya claimed that conditions in
the detention camps were far worse than those he had suffered as a
Japanese POW. Comparisons were also made with the Soviet gulags, and,
later on, by a former defence lawyer for the Mau Mau, with ‘ethnic
cleansing’. The accepted view of Britain’s decolonisation hitherto has
been that it was done in a more dignified, enlightened and consensual
way than by other countries – meaning, of course, France. It will be
difficult now to argue this so glibly. Kenya was Britain’s Algeria."

In such a time of terror, and given the stark threat to their lives
and livelihood, it is in fact remarkable that so many Goans chose to
overtly or subtly resist the colonial authorities who had total
control over their wellbeing. That resistance went far beyond the
outstanding contributions of Fitz de Souza, Pio Gama Pinto and Joseph
Murumbi Zuzarte - note that the entire East Africa Goan National
Association was banned outright, and it (especially the leadership
which included JM Nazareth and ACL de Souza) was looked at highly
suspiciously by both British and Portuguese colonial authorities for
being freedom-minded about both Kenya and Goa!

Even after decolonization, it is highly relevant that so many
thousands of Goans stayed in Kenya to "nation-build" in "free Africa."
>From athletes to administrators to educationists, here too the
contribution is far disproportionate to small numbers. As with
Pakistan post-1947, the Goan record of staying the course and trying
to shape the new nation is both impressive and honorable. That the
dream became tarnished in no way takes away from the idealism and very
real achievements when "the iron was hot".

On that note, Goa Arts + Literary Festival 2014 is pleased to host a
celebration of the 50th Anniversary of Kenya's Republic (and Goan
contributions thereof) on December 5 at 11AM. The excellent Eddie
Fernandes (ex-Mombasa) will chair, Mr. Luis de Assis Correia will be
in attendance, and Dr. Teresa Albuquerque and Fitz de Souza have both
been contacted in the hope they will attend. Come remember and honour
the Goan chapter of modern Kenya's history! Free registration at

[Goanet] SWAMINOMICS: Six months of Modi: achhe sitare more than achhe din

Nov 23 2014 : The Times of India (Mumbai)SWAMINOMICS - Six months of Modi:
achhe sitare more than achhe dinSWAMINATHAN S ANKLESARIA AIYARHave six months
of Narendra Modi's rule produced the achhe din (good days) promised during his
election campaign?
To some extent, yes. But this owes more to good luck than good policy. The most
dramatic improvement by far is falling inflation. After years of double digit
inflation, consumer inflation is down to just 5.5%.Wholesale price inflation
has fallen even more dramatically, to just 1.8%, with food inflation down to
1.4%. Petrol and diesel, which rose inexorably for years, are now falling
steeply. On other fronts, progress has been modest to non-existent. GDP growth
was projected to be a modest 5.5% this year, but looks like it is falling short
of that. Bank credit has steadily decelerated. Exports, which grew quite
rapidly in the first half of 2014, have decelerated since, and actually fell 5%
in October. Industrial growth is a pathetic 2.8% for the first half of the
fiscal year. Even during the licence-permit Raj, when GDP growth averaged only
3.5%, industrial growth used to average 5%. We have sunk below that.
Modi has ensured that government files are moving faster and clearances are
rapid. But this has not translated into a boom in orders for machinery or
construction. Machinery output has risen a bit, but after years of decline it
should be jumping by 20% per year. Consumer durables have actually declined
12.4 % in the first half of the fiscal year. Government revenue has been
growing at less than half the projected 19%.
This is a constipated economy, not a healthy one. Optimists say Modi's enema
will unclog the constipation within a year. That's possible but not certain.
The stock market has boomed because of over $30 billion of foreign inflows.
Modi is seen as a turnaround agent, and investors are giving him time to change
matters. He has undoubtedly energized the bureaucracy and investors.Yet he is
more showman than reformer. His Jan Dhan and Swacch Bharat schemes are new
versions of old Congress schemes. He funked any major reforms in the railway
budget or general budget. In many areas he has taken small steps forward, with
lots of publicity but no radical reform.
What's clear is that Modi is lucky. The dramatic improvements in inflation and
related areas owe nothing to his initiatives and everything to good luck,
arising from crashing global commodity prices. This year's budget assumed that
oil would average $ 110barrel, but it has actually crashed to $78barrel. This
has enabled fuel prices to be slashed, taming transport costs.Falling oil
prices have ensured that the balance of payments is under control,
notwithstanding a surge in gold imports and the recent slowdown in exports.
Finally, the oil price crash has hugely improved the fiscal position. Budgetary
subisidies for oil and fertilizers have been slashed, and the finance ministry
has been able to raise the excise duty on petrol and diesel, partly making up
for the big shortfall in tax revenues.
Even the moderation in food prices is a global outcome, not a Modi outcome.
Global food prices started rising in 2004 and then skyrocketed in 2007, but
have fallen sharply over the last year. The UPA government kept raising the
procurement prices of grain for many years in stages after 2007, to help Indian
farmers catch up with world prices, and this created a persistent upward
pressure on food prices, pulling up the entire price index. Now, with global
prices falling, procurement prices are being raised by less than the overall
inflation rate, so food is dampening the price index instead of exacerbating it.
Wheat and maize were both at $8bushel two years ago, but wheat is now down to
$5.5bushel and maize to $3.75bushel. India is a big importer of edible oils,
whose prices have also crashed. As against this India exports tea, cotton and
iron ore, and their falling prices have been a minus for India. That has been
offset by decreases in the price of commodities that India imports -coal,
copper, rubber, edible oils, and non-ferrous metals.
The sudden taming of inflation means that the RBI can now start cutting
interest rates.Lower interest rates will improve the balance sheets of the
government and corporations, and staunch the mess in banks. The stock market
boom created by foreign inflows means even dodgy infrastructure companies can
raise millions. Slowing world growth has affected our exports. But on balance,
global events have done far more for industry than Modi's “Make in India“
slogan or foreign trips.
In sum, the first six months of Modi's rule are better described as achhe
sitare (lucky stars) than achhe din (good days). Good luck is always welcome,
but does not last forever.

ov 23 2014 : The Times of India (Mumbai)The gourd that saves a girlMalini
NairOscar-winning director Megan Mylan's short film is about a Bengal teen
who grows vegetables to stave off early marriageAt a local haat in Bhutkura,
Cooch Behar, the pride of Monika Bar man's garden harvest, a giant bottle
gourd, is up for sale. Rs 25 is the price she quotes; too much, says a buyer.
Look at the marks on your vegetable, he argues.Monika laughs in disbelief at
this slur on the gourd she has nursed to full size on the thatched roof of her
home. The deal is finally settled for Rs 20. As the two ten-rupee notes come
into her hands, Monika's face creases into a quiet smile. There is pride there,
and some disbelief. It is the most telling moment in After My Garden Grows, a
10-minute film by Megan Mylan, who earlier directed the Oscar-winning Smile
Pinki. Her latest documentary was shown to a full house at the recent Kolkata
film festival, and was also shown at the Sundance Festival.Along with 40,000
other teenaged girls in West Bengal, 16-year-old Barman is part of the
micro-agricultural programme for adolescents jointly run by the NGO, Landesa,
and the state govern ment. The idea of the scheme is to ensure that youngsters
earn enough from their vegetable gardens to pay for school and use their
financial independence to stave off early marriage and motherhood.
“When will you get married if not now?“ asks the exasperated mother as the
family chats. “After my garden grows?“ Monika replies, somewhat tentatively.
The viewer won't ever know if she does indeed manage to resist the overwhelming
pressure to avoid early marriage, if her parents will avoid the debt of Rs
20,000 for her dowry or if she will make a success of her garden venture. But
for the film's duration, we are all drawn into the life and dilemmas of the
Barman family.
“There was a certain simplicity to the story of gardening and her trip to the
market for the first time. The garden could be taken as a metaphor for Monika's
own life and fam ily without hitting the audiences with the idea,“ says the
American filmmaker.
The film, backed by Sundance Institute, is a slice of Monika's life in
Bhutkura. You see her tending her greens and gourds on a small plot of family
land, arguing with her parents about being married off early, cracking up with
other girls in the project about the irony of gender skew. And slowly realizing
her own strength.
Actor Aamir Khan says that it took all of 10 minutes to move him to tears. “You
are there when she goes to the market and you have been with her on her journey
before.
And you know she deserves the best price she can get. In my head I am fighting
for her, say ing, `Arre yaar, don't bargain. Give her that Rs 20. The best
thing about the film is that it subtly takes you into her life, allowing the
characters to tell their own story,“ he says.
Mylan says she does not see herself as an activist. “My job is to stir things
up, not tell people what to do. All the film says is that give girls the choice
to do what they wish with their lives. The audiences realize that there are all
kinds of complexities at work There is this girl, for instance, who complains
that her sister has graduated but couldn't find a job or a husband,“ she says.
Monika and her sister Konika have tasted some fame having travelled with the
film to Mumbai recently. The screening was attend ed by a several celebrities
including Khan.
But for all that, the teenager is as level-head ed as she appears in the film.
“The film is not going to change my life dramatically. If it helps other young
girls, I will be happy. But I have to finish school, maybe buy a small plot of
land and farm on it with the money I am saving in a post office account every
month, maybe buy a little gold,“ says Monika, who has saved Rs 50 so far. She's
clear about her own reality and the film's place in her life though she's fuzzy
about the price of gold.

DKA RELEASES THREE MORE ROMI KONKANI BOOKS

Three Konkani books of poetry in Romi script, namely Lino B. Dourado’s
‘Sundoreacho Beij Pavsachie Rati’, Ashok R. Chodankar’s ‘Panvllio’ and
Menino Almeida’s ‘Hanv To Hanv’ were released by Dalgado Konknni Akademi
(DKA) at an impressive function held on November 21, 2014 at Ravindra
Bhavan’s ‘Black Box’, Margao.

The Director of Thomas Stephens Konknni Kendr (TSKK), Fr. Apolinario
Cardozo, SJ was the Chief Guest while noted Konkani novelist Joe Meny
Furtado was the Guest of Honour. DKA President Premanand A. Lotlikar
presided over the function and Secretary Vincy Quadros and Treasurer Walter
Menezes were also present on the dais along with the three poets whose
books were released.

Fr. Cardozo in his address spoke about the presence of various scripts of
Konkani language in “Goa, Mangalore and other parts of the Eastern and
Western coast of India” and reminded the audience that it was the
diversity of the language which enabled us to experience its richness. He
lamented that “the Konknni Language Act did not do justice to growth of the
Konkani language in Roman script” and disclosed that the daunting task of
compiling a Konkani Dictionary has been completed by his staff and urged
DKA “to undertake this project and also to print and publish the same.” On
behalf of TSKK, Fr. Cardozo also extended all support to DKA.

DKA President Premanand A. Lotlikar while speaking about the need to foster
unity, appealed to the writers to take advantage of the various schemes of
the Academy.

All the three poets also expressed their thoughts and shared their
excitement on the occasion of the release of their respective book.

Earlier, Secretary Vincy Quadros in his welcome address briefly spoke about
the future projects and the new schemes launched by the academy and sought
the co-operation of everyone to make them successful.

Treasurer Walter Menezes delivered the vote of thanks while Sonia Gomes
compered the function. Anthony Miranda who has recently released his audio
album, ‘Lhan Zale Mhan’ recited two of his poems from the album and later
the songs composed from the poems were played for the listening pleasure of
the audience.

[Goanet] THE BATTLE FOR PANAJI

2014-11-25 Thread Aires Rodrigues
With Manohar Parrikar’s resignation the decks clear to kick off the process
to select and elect the next MLA of Panaji.

Raju Sukerkar, Ashok Mogu Naik, Gaurish Dhond and Manohar Parrikar’s very
own man Friday cum errand boy Sidharth Kuncalienker are reportedly in the
list of BJP probables. But it is the RSS which virtually controls the BJP
that will have the last say. Having known all the four for years the
encounter will be lively. It could end up even livelier if Manohar Parrikar
fields his other side kick Atmaram Nadkarni. An animated out of court
combat it would be.

Ashok Mogu Naik despite his administrative experience and very clean record
as the former Mayor of Panaji has over the last few years been humiliated
and side lined alike the other leading face of the Bahujan Samaj in the
BJP, the North Goa MP Shripad Naik.

Sources confirm that Manohar Parrikar has zeroed on his close lieutenant
Sidharth Kuncalienker. For me it will be a walk down memory lane as 30
years ago had contested as an Independent from St Andre constituency
against his dad the late Dr Sripad Kuncalienker a very soft spoken
gentleman who won polling 4478 votes.

At that election in 1984 Sidharth Kuncalienker’s dad Dr Sripad Kuncalienker
who contested on a Congress ticket polled 39.55% of the votes followed by
Teotonio Pereira with 28.25%. Amongst the 13 candidates who were in the
fray stood fourth polling a 1002 votes. In those days an Independent rarely
crossed the 200 mark. So after contesting against the father, will it now
be locking horns with his son three long decades down the road.

Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar may be pinning his hopes on Manohar
Parrikar but the next MLA of Panaji has to be an effective legislator and
not a dummy expecting Manohar Parrikar to run the show. Good governance is
about making no false promises and not navigating U turns. There can be no
room for corruption and nepotism.

The verdict in this ensuing vigorous battle for Panaji will fittingly be
delivered by the very judicious voters who silently and surely will make
their right choice while also expressing their anger & disgust at the
current sordid state of affairs. Together for a better Panaji & the just
welfare of all sections of society regardless of caste or creed.
