[Goanet] Mumbai: When a great city dies.....IE 20 Apr pg 8
From: bcsabha.kal...@gmail.com To: http://indianexpress.com/article/opinion/columns/when-a-great-city-dies/99/ The recent rash of illiberal incidents that has erupted in Mumbai threatens to further tarnish this already beleaguered city. Once India’s pride, “urbs prima in Indis”, the city struggles today with a host of issues — from choked roads, growing slums and environmental pollution to a development plan that has excluded more than half of its historic sites. But despite this, the professionalism of the city, its “can do” spirit, its laissez faire mantra, its ability to take a cuff on the shoulder with resilience and a sense of humour has prevailed and usually won the day. It is this spirit that is under threat today from the attack on former sheriff of Mumbai Nana Chudasama’s office, the vitriol spewed at Shobhaa De’s innocuous remarks and the attacks on the Dr Bhau Daji Lad Museum for hosting a fashion show. Mumbai’s long-standing tradition of openness and tolerance is fast eroding.I have known Chudasama for the longest time. He represents the best of what defined Mumbai as intelligent, inclusive, decent and caring. He is known for his acerbic humour, and his political witticisms on a banner outside his office, like the Amul butter and Air India maharaja ads, were among the few welcome markers of public culture in the city. His dinner parties always had a sprinkling of the city’s patriarchs, editors, businessmen and NGO workers. He was president of the “I love Mumbai Society” and every year, he hosted a plant-a-tree campaign, among a host of other initiatives. His daughter is one of the well-known faces of the BJP in Mumbai. My first thought when I read about the attack was, “Dear God, if this can happen to him, are any of us safe in this city?”It is instructive to look at Mumbai’s civic culture and its development to understand how fast this liberal cultural space is eroding and how important it is to arrest this if we are to fulfil the promise of a globally resurgent India — because Mumbai, in many ways, represents our modern and international face and no amount of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vigorous campaigning for “Make in India” or his promise to ensure that contracts will not be abrogated will attract investments if we continue down this path of violence, intimidation and intolerance.RELATEDSena Greets North Indians With A Ticket And A Poster‘Zero Tolerance For Street Crime, People-Friendly Force Priorities’The City Of ExperimentMuch of the city was built in the 19th and early 20th centuries by merchants who understood that, to prosper, they needed to live in peaceful co-existence. Early accounts of the city’s marketplaces describe colourful scenes of people of all hues and in a variety of native dresses mingling in easy familiarity. Of course, there were differences, but these were respected and understood, and often communities participated in each other’s festivities. A little known fact is that Mumbai’s patron diety, Mumbai Devi, takes on the dress and accoutrements of different communities — Gujarati, Tamil etc — on different festival days. Hindus visit dargahs and Muslims celebrate Lord Ganesha’s annual arrival in the city.It is precisely this cosmopolitan spirit that has made Mumbai an international financial centre. The spirit of professionalism and tolerance gives it stability and an edge over other more parochial cities. But the politics of divisiveness and violence has already visited terrible retribution on the city. Mumbai has an active civic culture of debate and dissent that has enabled it to withstand poor governance and political ineptitude, but violence and intimidation are of a different order and they threaten to completely denude the already shrinking space for democratic processes. Educated young people in the city eschew political engagement precisely for this reason and one sees more and more that lumpen elements are capturing this space. We ban books and movies on the flimsiest of reasons, storm art exhibitions and denounce anyone who does not share our point of view. We spread poison about those who are different from us. Is this what the new India is about? We pay empty lip service to the ideals that our freedom fighters fought for. And every political party and leader claims Gandhiji’s great mantle. But few understand the gravity of his conception of nonviolence. For him, violence was not just physical but had mental and intellectual dimensions as well. For Gandhiji, if you truly believed in nonviolence then you would not see the other through an alienating lens of hostility, contempt or hatred. You would try to bring them around to your point of view by example. Is there any leader today who comes close to this lofty view of coexistence.Mumbai is the face of a globally contemporary India and we send a poor message to all those, both in India and in the international community, who wish to engage
[Goanet] Maharashtra: State to HC: Beef ban does not violate Constitutional rights ....TOI 21 Apr pg 3 ( hearing continues today - Dolphy D'Souza)
From: bcsabha.kal...@gmail.com To: State to HC: Beef ban does not violate Constitutional rights Shibu Thomas Mumbai: `Dung, Urine Used In Medicines And Pest Repellents' The Maharashtra government on Monday claimed that it brought in the beef ban law to protect the cow and its progeny due to their many benefits--from milk to the use of dung and urine in making pest repellents and medicinal products. In an affidavit filed before Bombay high court by Chitrakala Suryawanshi, deputy secretary , animal husbandry department, the state justified the Maharashtra Animal Preservation (Amendment) Act that bans the slaughter of bulls and bullocks along with cows. The government pointed to the state's agrarian economy and said the ban was a “reasonable restriction“. The affidavit was submitted by Maharashtra advocate general Sunil Manohar. Other than milk--which the state claimed scientific research had shown as valuable-its dung and urine were a source of fuel, manure and biogas, the affidavit said. “The waste is also used to prepare pest repellents and medicinal formulations, which lead to improve public health,“ the state contended. The government denied that the law, which criminalizes even possession of beef, violates any fundamental rights. “It cannot be said that simply because the possession of meat of cow progeny is banned so as to give complete effect to the directive principles of the Constitution, the rights of the citizen under Article 21 to have his own choice of food stands violated or stultified,“ the affidavit said. The state said the cow and its progeny were the backbone of Maharashtra's agrarian economy and the law was brought into effect to protect them and to prevent cruelty to animals. Setting to rest another controversy , when it indicated that a ban on the slaughter of other animals could be considered, the government clarified it was only for cows, bulls and bullocks, and the possession of flesh of these animals. “There is no total ban on import of meat or livestock. The only ban is for possession of meat flesh of cow progeny within the state of Maharashtra and there cannot be trade or commerce only of meat flesh of cow progeny. All other kind of meat including that of buffalo is permitted to be possessed,“ added the affidavit. “Though the provision may result in affecting the import of cow progeny flesh, the same is only incidental to the real nature and character of the enactment and hence cannot affect the competence of the legislature to enact (the law),“ the state said. The government opposed any stay and said the law had received President's assent and was “in public interest“. Petitioners challenging the beef ban law questioned

[Goanet] Mumbai: HC says PIL filed over draft plan is `premature' ....TOI 21 Apr pg 2
From: bcsabha.kal...@gmail.com To: HC says PIL filed over draft plan is `premature' Rosy Sequeira Mumbai: The Bombay High Court on Monday said the state government has wide powers to accept or reject the draft development plan for Mumbai, while declining to entertain a public interest litigation challenging it. “How can we direct a fresh draft development plan to be prepared?'' asked a bench of Justice Abhay Oka and Justice C V Bhadang. NGO Vanshakti's petition said the draft does not take into consideration the coastal zone management plan maps which are required to identify coastal regulatory zone areas. Its advocate Gayatri Singh argued that the draft DP relies on the existing land use maps which have not identified the CRZ areas. She said failure to do so will legalise constructions after the 1991 CRZ notification. But the bench said the PIL was premature. “The whole thing is at a preliminary stage. You are assuming what the corporation has done is the gospel truth,'' said Justice Oka. To the court's query , Maharashtra Coastal Zone Management Authority's advocate Sharmila Deshmukh replied the Coastal Zone Management Plan map is still in the draft stage and is not finalized. The bench said the BMC, the planning authority , has called for objections and suggestions to the draft DP . These will be forwarded to the planning committee which will make an enquiry after giving reasonable opportunity of hearing and submit its report to BMC. “Even at this stage, the planning authority can make modifications and changes,“ the bench added. The court said thereafter the draft DP has to be submitted to the state government and the government may reject, modify , sanction a part or even return the entire draft DP . “In case the planning authority retains it as it is, the government has power to reject the plan,'' it added. -- Please send a blank email with delete my id in the subject line if you do not wish to receive our mails
[Goanet] Make space for true values of Hinduism (Times of India)
From: bcsabha.kal...@gmail.com To: http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/goa/Make-space-for-true-values-of-Hinduism/articleshow/46972987.cms From: rdsg2...@gmail.com To: Make space for true values of HinduismTNN | Apr 19, 2015 It is depressing to witness a regime of intolerance sweeping across this country. The topic of religion is a sensitive one that has political connotations. I am no expert on religion and neither a hardcore supporter of any political party. I am a liberal, secular agnostic who has not set foot in any place of worship for the past many years. I remember the Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations at my ancestral place during my college and university days. I used to invite my friends to celebrate the festival with us, most of whom were Christians and Muslims. They all used to join in the festivities; nobody ever felt discriminated on the basis of religion. It is the spirit of the festival that matters. There are many, including me, who feel that Hinduism is not a religion in the Abrahamic sense of the word: there is no one founder, no prophet, no one religious book, no 'chosen people' and no monotheistic or jealous god. It does not proselytize or hunt heretics. Instead, it is a set of rituals and practices of living in harmony with nature. It has to be noted that most of the traditions and rituals of Hinduism have a scientific explanation. In other words, it is a way of life. Many years ago, I received an e-mail titled, 'Why I am a Hindu', in which the writer explains to a young American girl the features of the 'religion'. He claimed that anybody can be a Hindu: a person belonging to any religion, one who believes in many gods or even one god, or even an atheist. It is perhaps this feature that has given Hinduism a quality of being tolerant, accepting and broad-minded. I guess that is why all those people who invaded India in the past (except the Europeans) settled down and assimilated easily into the culture, creating a rich, multi-cultural milieu. There were also the Zoroastrians (Parsis) and Baha'is who fled to India to escape persecution and found refuge in this country. Gurcharan Das in his book, 'The Difficulty of being good', says that Hinduism is a civilization based on a simple metaphysical insight about the unity of the individual and the universe and has self-development as its objective. He goes on to state that when he told his friends and acquaintances that he wanted to study the Mahabharat, they accused him of turning saffron, an accusation which left him peeved. There is a misconception that the Ramayana and the Mahabharat are religious texts. They are just what they state to be: epic stories, like the Iliad and the Odyssey, meant to be read by everybody, but with morals that are still relevant today. Even the Bhagwad Gita contained in the Mahabharat is more of a philosophical and moral discourse, if one has to contrast it with other religious books. This is why it is sad to note a rise in regressive attitudes and intolerant mentalities on the part of the so-called guardians of the Hindu way of life, now that they have been unleashed from a position of power. It can be said that Hindu fundamentalism is a response to Islamic fundamentalism, but the fact remains that the liberal, tolerant nature of Hinduism is in danger. Although the RSS chief may not have been off the mark with his statement, but such statements embarrass liberal Hindus more than anybody else. The recent beef ban in Maharashtra is another example of majoritarianism. Just because 99% of Hindus do not eat beef, it does not mean that other communities should be banned from doing so. While many may argue that the Middle Eastern countries and Pakistan practise dictatorial religious majoritarianism, it should be noted that those countries were created by the colonial powers as Islamic countries. Islamism is in their DNA and their constitutions. It is not so in India. A deeply patriarchal society means that sadly, it is women, the victims, who are blamed for the rape. Irresponsible statements by MPs make us hang our heads in shame. Men in khaki shorts who celebrate bachelorhood should not advise women on what to do or not to do. Instead of banning documentaries that expose our hypocrisy towards rape and comedy acts that roast celebrities, it would be better if the government banned hate speeches and people with criminal records from entering the Parliament, and ban the ban on books and films that have been banned, lest we end up becoming a nation of bandhan. While during UPA-2, the MPs were gagged by Sonia Gandhi, in this government, we see too many loose cannons firing. This is where Goa can set an example. It is a state where all faiths have co-existed in harmony for centuries, whether in the pre-Portuguese era, the colonial period (except during the Inquisition) and post-Liberation. Most children in Goa grow up being exposed to a
[Goanet] Mumbai: 3, 300 residents hit the streets to protest BMC hawking policy .....MM 20 Apr pg 4
From: bcsabha.kal...@gmail.com To: 3,300 residents hit the streets to protest BMC hawking policy Jyoti Shelar and Nazia Sayed TWEETS @_MumbaiMirror It's just the beginning, say citizens as they plan to step up the agitation More than 3,300 Mumbai kars took to the streets, or ganised public meetings and started signature cam paigns on Sunday to protest against hawking zones proposed by the BMC in some of the city's oldest and richest neighbourhoods. From senior citizens to children, residents of different ages and backgrounds made a call for protecting their areas from the nuisance of hawkers. The protest, organised by Action for Good Governance and Networking in India, saw participation of over 100 citizens' groups from Colaba to Bandra. “Today was just the beginning. We are prepared to go to any extent to ensure that the BMC's hawking policy is not implemented. We will pressure the authorities to re-examine it,“ said Madhu Poplai, secretary of Pali Hill Residents' Association. Over 150 Bandra residents held a silent protest at the amphitheatre on Carter Road on Sunday. The BMC has proposed 60,000 hawking pitches on 3,727 streets across the city, and plans to allow 90,000 licensed vendors to operate there in different time slots. If the pol Micy is implemented, residents will have to cope with four times the number of hawkers they deal with now. Footpaths and street corners in Colaba, Bandra, Khar, Santacruz have been marked as hawking zones in the proposed policy, aimed at regulating roadside vendors. Hawkers could soon be seen outside Pali Hill homes of Bollywood figures such as Rishi Kapoor, Isha Koppikar and Gulzaar, and even outside Anil Ambani's building. Residents of Dadar's Hindu and Parsi colonies, which are heritage precincts, will also see their sidewalks being taken over by hawkers. Over 3,000 residents from the two colonies, including a large number of Parsis, and from Matunga took out a silent march to protest against the proposed hawking spots. They walked from Five Gardens in Dadar to Matunga railway station. “It's very upsetting that the civic body did not feel the need to issue any public notice about the new policy. We learned about the plan only when we approached the BMC to complain about some illegal hawkers in our area,“ said Hindu Colony resident Rahul Khona. The BMC has suggested 1,800 hawking pitches in Ward 174 comprising Dadar and Matunga. Of these, 360 will be in Hindu Colony and 194 in Parsi Colony. “New vendor spots have been proposed in residential areas with schools, colleges and nursing homes. Allowing more hawkers will ruin the calm and beauty of our
[Goanet] Mumbai: BMC struggles to handle 25, 000 DP objections ....TOI 21 Apr pg 2
From: bcsabha.kal...@gmail.com To: BMC struggles to handle 25,000 DP objections VijayV Singh Mumbai: Inadequately equipped civic officials are struggling to handle 25,000 suggestionsobjections they have received till Monday on thedraft Development Plan (DP) 2034. Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) officials are maintaining the applications' basic details in their office register and on Monday , they suddenly realized that they need a computer to simplify the process. They decided to prepare the application detailsin Excel sheets to understand the suggestions objections subject and area-wise. The civic authorities stated that submission of suggestion objection letters will now have to be made at the civic headquarters' building ground floor, outside the Citizen Facilitation Centre (CFC), and not on the 5th floor. Unlike earlier, where all forms would be collected at one counter, submission of forms has been divided based on the area (eastern, western or city). “There are so many applications. We plan to enter all details in Excel sheets to simplify the process and avoid confusion. The process will take more than a month,“ said an official. Compiling the suggestions objections list is a useful aspect, as through this list, an authorized planning committee will shortlist the parties concerned, to grant them a hearing under the Maharashtra Regional and Town Planning (MRTP) Act, and accordingly will make changes in the final DP, after examining all details. The committee consists of members of the planning authority and experts appointed by the state government. BMC had committed a series of mistakes while preparing the draft. Some were palmed off as typing errors. Officials had claimed that they had visited all plots before marking them in the DP, but housing societies stated that no civic official had visited them in the last few years. It was one of the reasons why the planners had marked several under-construction buildings as reserved plots in the draft DP. The civic authorities had not suggested any specific format while seeking suggestions/objections. In some cases, people wrote all details without mentioning the subject. An activist stated that it would be impossible for the civic officials compiling the suggestions/objections list to read all the letters and identify the subject. “Compiling the records accurately is a lengthy process but it is important. If any application goes missing in the list, we will demand an explanation from the civic authorities,“ said activist Anil Galgali. Officials collecting the letters said that they received most letters on Monday from Kandivli, Malwani and Ghatkopar.
[Goanet] Jet Airways does it again!
http://www.india.com/sports/wtf-jet-airways-barred-indian-shooters-anjali-bhagwat-heena-sidhu-for-carrying-firearms-353914/ WTF! Jet Airways barred Indian Shooters Anjali Bhagwat Heena Sidhu for carrying firearms Hearing about misbehaviour and manhandling on the part of some Indian airlines has become so common, it’s passé, but the latest incident by one of the airlines will leave you dumbstruck. Jet Airways, which often finds itself among controversies, did something unimaginable! They stopped the entry of India’s leading shooters Anjali Bhagwat and Heena Sidhu from boarding their flight from Bangkok to Mumbai, according to The Times of India. The reason being that the shooters were carrying firearms in their luggage. It seems Jet ignore the proper clearance papers they had! The ordeal did not end for the ladies, as they had to spend sleepless nights in Bangkok. (Also Read: Airport official arrested for sexually harassing passenger.) The nightmarish trip for Anjali Bhagwat and Heena Sidhu started when the Jet Airways denied them entry on the connecting flight from Bangkok to Mumbai. The two female shooters were returning from Busan (South Korea) and as per norms, they were issued with a Jet Airways boarding pass in Busan itself. They were still hassled in Bangkok! (Also Read: Air India pilots indulge in verbal duel before flight take off) As per the TOI report, the two Arjuna Awardees faced difficulties with the uncalled for behaviour of Jet. Heena Sidhu said while talking to TOI, “Despite having all the documents and paying all the fees, Shailesh Gala, the security manager of Jet Airways in Bangkok, didn’t allow us to board the flight. We showed him the DGCA permit and the customs clearance letter but he was adamant and said, ‘I won’t allow you to board the flight’. She further added after arriving Mumbai eight hours late, ”I asked him to give this in writing but he refused. We almost missed the Air India flight too because of his attitude.” Heena was deeply affected with the rude behavior by the Jet Airways official who refused to tell the sportspersons the reasons behind barring them entry into the flight. Anjali and Heena were informed by Korean airline staff that they were not accepted because of the presence of firearms in the luggage. As a result, the girls faced plenty of trouble on the night with no food or sleep at the Bangkok airport. “It was late in the night and because Jet Airways refused to allow us travel, we had to go out of the airport and take a visa on arrival. We also went without food as the restaurants were all closed. First, we paid the extra baggage charges to Jet and then to Air India and in total we spent about 1700 euros. Add to this the harassment we faced at the hands of that official,” said Heena, further expressing her anger. The problem for the two sportspersons finally came to an end when the National Rifle Association of India stepped in, after being informed by the former Commonwealth Games medallist Ashok Pandit. [Goanet] A deceptive book
by Dr. Francisco Colaco I am a great admirer of Valmiki Faleiro and had lavished a lot of praise on Valmiki as a brilliant writer and master of the pen. I stand by what I said. But after perusing his book “Soaring Spirit” minutely this is what I have to say:- 1. The historians whom I met on that day and thereafter admit it is no historical book at all. A magnus opus that makes sweeping statements about contentious subjects should contain well-known references and a readily-accessible bibliography. That the book was written in three months cannot be advanced as an excuse for its multiple short-comings 2. Valmiki’s book, instead of being a historical book, reads like a book of khaniô. He has indeed stooped to abysmal depths by selectively bringing into the open the private and intimate lives of inhabitants of Largo da Igreja and their revered ancestors. He seems totally confused when he brings into play the new settlers like Massurkars and Barretos in good light, while directing his ire, a fruit of his fertile imagination, against those against whom his family had a grudge, notwithstanding the fact that the Colaços in particular, to cite one example, contributed so much towards the welfare of Holy Spirit Church and the Comunidades unlike his family. 3. Valmiki would have sounded more congruent if, while washing other people’s dirty linen, he had brought under scrutiny his own. It is abysmal to learn that he talks of his half-mad “gossip-monger” aunts as “encyclopedias” who gave him the inputs for his book. Further, he fails to mention about his own father who was a manic-schizophrenic and had to be tied when he ran amuck and went into a state of murderous frenzy. Yet, he seems bent on soiling other people’s good name which is tantamount to defamation. As a member of the ancestral Colaço family, I have two advices for Valmiki. First, “let a book about “history” be a “historical book”. Second, “those who have glass houses should not throw stones”

Is not b advisable that the sacrifice of the mass is offered to the souls in purgatory in general? If every time when we participate in the Holy Eucharist can we not offer for such intention? The rosary and other structured and spontaneous prayers, sacrifices et can be not be offered for such intentions? Can we not offer regular charity to the needy and deserving with the same intentions? Do the souls in purgatory appear and request for hundred of masses for their deliverance? The mass stipend as we understand is only for the maintenance of the priest and no value can be attached to it I wish some can explain the length of time after the death the masses are to be offered in general .Is it guilt and fear of retribution that makes relatives resort to this practice out of guilt complex ? Many are of the firm belief that unless we pay the stipend it is not valid sacrifice .There are instances, when these paid mass offerings are not said for many years for one reason or other Can we not have faith in the merciful Lord to be just and fair. In applying all the prayers to cleanse the souls in purgatory How the doubts of duration in purgatory and the quantum of prayers will be just enough not to be guilty of not doing enough Nelson Lopes Chinchinim

The Hindu puranas credit Parashurama as the creator of Goa and the adjoining coastal areas. Goa is often referred to as Parashurama-bhoomi, the Land of Parashurama. [Goanet] Anti-Hindu accusation false propaganda: Goa convent schools
http://www.daijiworld.com/news/news_disp.asp?n_id=313363 *Panaji, April 20 (IANS):* Continuing to be accused of being against Indian and Hindu culture, 'Conference of Religious', a Church organisation which oversees the functioning of convent schools in Goa, on Monday claimed that false propaganda was being spread to mislead people. In a statement issued here, Fr Paul Alvares, president of the Conference of Religious in Goa, said individual religion and culture of the child were respected and encouraged in the schools operated by them. The Conference of Religious, Goa unit, under which most of the convent schools come, would like to clarify that we stand for secularism as enshrined in our constitution and through our educational institutes we promote all religions and encourage the upliftment and development of all cultures, the statement said. India is a multi-cultural country with diverse forms of living. We are not here to promote any one culture nor to promote any one religion. We respect all religions and all cultures and we work to develop the all round growth of the child, which includes physical, intellectual, moral and social dimensions, the statement said. Nearly 26 percent of the state's population is Christian, while there are over 130 schools which function under the aegis of the Archdiocese in Goa. On Sunday, in a statement issued here, the Hindu Janajagruti Samiti, a right wing organisation based in Goa, alleged that convent schools do not allow students to wear Indian dresses and kumkum and implored parents not to admit their wards in schools run by Christian institutions when the educational year opens in June. On April 5, Goa's Factories and Boilers Minister Deepak Dhavalikar's wife Lata alleged that western culture leads to rape at a public meeting organised by the Samiti and also said convent schools alienate children from Hindu and Indian culture. Her statement was backed a couple of days later by her husband. -- DEV BOREM KORUM Gabe Menezes.

Re: [Goanet] Wondering how to become an author?
Hi All, This set me thinking ... First Point: Which books on Goa will have the largest audience and can also possibly have an overseas audience? Second Point the cost: Firstly your time, if research is involved (Specially outside goa) then travel and stay in that location e.g. Bombay, Pune getting permissions for archive access and photography/xerox. Then event photographs (if covering festivals etc) or photographs of heritage structure - do it yourself if you are are reasonably good enough at it or hire a professional (Quite Costly) or license photographs from Goa's well known photographers Third: Making a draft Fourth: contacting a publisher and getting an estimate for publishing. (FN being an expert on this can through some light on how much it will cost to print a paperback book of 400 pages around 3,000 copies) Some of the topics in my opinion that could do well ... 1) On Goa's Heritage trail 2) Emerald Paradise of the Goa - All the natural spots Beaches, Waterfalls and places unknown 3) Goa Carnaval - Origins, History and Celebrations over the Ages 4) Goa Shigmo Through the Ages 5)History of post Liberation Goa 6) Cultural Heritage of Goa 7) Catholic Festivals and observances in Goa 8) Hindu Festivals in Goa 9) Documentation of history of each place in Goa like Dominic Fernandes has written on Mapusa 10) Books covering specific theme like Beaches of Goa, Forts of Goa, Churches of Goa, Temples of Goa 11) Goa's Administration - Goa's Rulers through the ages from Pre-Portuguese times to the Present 12)Prominent personalities of Goa through the Ages I am sure that other readers of Goanet will have more ideas to share with budding writers. *Sporting Clube de Goa lock horns with Mumbai FC* Sporting Clube de Goa will lock horns with Mumbai FC in the HERO I-League at PJN Stadium, Fatorda, Goa, on Wednesday. The kick off time is 4.30pm. In their last match Sporting Goa overcame Salgaocar FC with a convincing 2-0 display. Mumbai on the other hand earned a well deserved point after holding Kingfisher East Bengal to a 1-1 draw, away from home. Sporting Goa Coach Mathew D’Costa is hoping to build on the last performance. “The whole team played their part in the win. I was extremely pleased with the wing play of youngsters Brandon Fernandes and Alber Gonsalves,” remarked Mathew. With just six fixtures left to play, it’s a crucial game for both sides as a resurgent Sporting Goa is currently on 10 points from fourteen matches, while Mumbai is on 14 points from fourteen outings. When the two sides met earlier in the season at the Cooperage Stadium, the match ended in a goalless draw. Mumbai midfielders Paresh Shivalkar and the Japanese Taisuke are expected to miss out through injury. [Goanet] The good, bad and ugly
The good, bad and ugly TNN | Apr 22, 2015, 02.00 AM IST Isidore Domnick Mendes For years, transportation of iron ore, from various mines in Sanguem taluka to offloading at designated places in this village, was the main occupation of nearly 70 percent of its villagers. It is estimated that Sanvordem itself had between 1,500-2,000 trucks and a large number of heavy machinery connected with loading and moving ore. The hustle and bustle came to a complete standstill in October 2012, when the Supreme Court, while taking into account the Shah commission report, banned iron ore mining in Goa. Surrounded by the villages of Dabal (Sanguem), Tilamol-Xeldem (Quepem), Chandor (Salcete), and Panchwadi in Shiroda (Ponda), Sanvordem village in Sanguem taluka is home to around 10,000 residents, of which, around 4,800 are registered voters. Sanvordem has nine panchayat wards and fourteen traditional vaddos including Morailem, Bepquegal, Cariamoddi, Bansai, Pontemol, Cacora, Oddai, Xelvona, Khamamol, Baga-Sanvordem, Dodo-Madel, Periudok, Capxem and Tony Nagar. The Shah commission report had stated that illegal mining worth Rs 35,000 crore had been undertaken during the last 12 years in the state. In order to get associated with the mining business, many Sanvordemkars had come back from their overseas assignments to Goa for good. But, the closure of mining has engulfed the residents in a financial crisis as many of them had taken loans to buy trucks and machinery. When the mining business was at its peak, there have been instances when many young children demanded that their parents give them a mining truck as a birthday gift, says Fr Jorge Fernandes, assistant parish priest at the 127-year-old Guardian Angel Church, Sanvordem. The stoppage of mining has completely crippled the economy of Sanvordem. The purchasing power of most residents of the village has decreased drastically and this can be gauged by the dwindling numbers of shoppers. There is no more a mad rush even for the famous Sunday market, says youth leader and music teacher Shelton Fenandes, a resident of Baga vaddo. Concurs Cruz M Coutinho alias 'Mr CM', a noted trumpeter, who has been felicitated with the lifetime achievement award by the Tiatr Academy of Goa (TAG), Though I do not have any direct connection with mining, I cannot deny the fact that mining activity had become part and parcel of the existence of the villagers. Even for people hailing from economically-deprived conditions, their standard of living underwent a sea change through construction of newly-built houses and buying swanky two-wheelers and four-wheelers etc. Excessive human greed which had taken precedence over desirable needs is being labelled as the main reason for its closure. If one had gone slow and steady with iron ore extraction, this activity would have sustained for another two decades. The environment and social guidelines were torn apart as responsible mining took a backseat. In our village, itself, due to reckless mining operations of iron ore being transported and stored, there was dense pollution around-the- clock. During day time, when one wore white or light-coloured attire, it would turn rusty red. Even the face and eyes bore regularly the brunt of dust. In the monsoons, the travails were equally worse as speeding iron ore trucks would splash muddy water on both pedestrians and two-wheelers alike, adds Coutinho, a resident of Morailem vaddo. Accidents caused due to rash driving by mining truck drivers was the order of the day. Since vehicles used in mining transportation were driven at tearing speeds, they have snuffed out the lives of many two-wheeler riders as well as pedestrians. There was no check or verification of the drivers employed, says Felicidade Pereira of Morailem vaddo. Thirty months of the mining ban has completely frozen the income which these villagers used to earn by operating trucks, heavy machines and service stations. Sadhashiv Kakodar of Cacora, who runs a servicing centre at Bansai, says that work has dwindled drastically. The unit used to service 20 to 25 trucks on each off day i.e. Sundays. Now, we don't even get one truck per day. Once I had the services of four labourers, now it is even difficult to afford the wages of one employee, he said. Ditto was the fate of owners of heavy machinery owners and trucks. By taking a bank loan, I had purchased a wheel loader for Rs 36 lakh. There has been no work since the past two-and-half years. The banks are constantly harassing us for its repayment, says Kupeshwar, a resident. Says Satyawan Rama Gaonkar, secretary of South Goa progressive truck owners association, Despite the trucks becoming stationary since October 2012, truck owners still have to incur annual expenses between Rs 50,000 and Rs 60,000 per year on each truck. They have to pay for insurance renewal, fitness passing certificate, pollution certificate and maintenance related
