[Goanet-News] Of migration, wealth, feni, an Vhodlem Ghor... and a diamond ring (Roland Francis)

This narration is dedicated to the memory of Joel D'Souza of
Assagao, photojournalist, long time reporter for many Goa
publications and online outlets, kind friend of many and
acquaintance to even more who like myself, knew and
befriended him in cyberspace, but never had the occasion to meet.

Joel's piece on Assagao can be read on Goacom.com
[http://goacom.com/Goan-villages-1/92-bardez/556-assagao]. In that
article, crafted with endearment, he makes a reference to the
person around whom my essay revolves and the house he lived
in called 'Vhodlem Ghor'. It is located in a scenic part of
this village and which since 1961 was taken over by the
Palotti priests and run as a seminary to bolster the sagging
vocations experienced by the Catholic Church in Goa.

Like all tales passed over from father to son, how
much is fact and how much embellishment or even
fiction no one will ever know. What I can tell you
with confidence is the sincerity with which it was
told to me by a no-nonsense former railwayman whose
house was in close proximity to the Vhodlem Ghor
and whose family would have been in a better
position to know firsthand the foibles of the grand
  old man of the Ghor.

It was the early years of the 20th century which witnessed
the migration of many Goans to Bombay to study, to work and
to establish themselves. Those were the heydays of the city.

If India was the crown of the Raj, then Bombay City and its
Bombay Province was its crown jewel. The crème de la crème of
Goan society was recognized as part of the aristocracy of
Bombay. One among such noble Goan souls was Caetano Domingos
Athaide.

Assagao then, though originated from a Saraswat Brahmin
aristocracy from the Atri gotra with Ravalnath as the
presiding deity, had long since been converted to Catholicism
by the Franciscans.

The Athaides were one of the elite families in the
village, producing many famous scions, in music,
law and commerce. Domingos, called Dom in Bombay,
was, as expected in such a family, not only highly
educated, but astute in the commercial practices of
the time. When this story unfolds, he was the
General Manager of a number of mills of a British
  conglomerate.

Domingos lacked for nothing. He build a palatial home in
Assagao or perhaps completely rebuilt his ancestral home in
sync with his status in life. Among the many features of the
home was a magnificent hall that served well for family
functions.

A wide section for the orchestra formed a part of this hall,
with a raised platform and all, but with an important
difference. Their music could be heard with excellent sound
reverberation but not one of the band members could be seen;
Domingos was of the opinion that the enjoyment of music
should not be subject to distraction. This was a good
family, interacting without snobbery with the neighbors and
the rest of the village. Local children were given the run
of the house when things were quiet and when Domingos had no
need of quietude.

One of the other quirks of the lord of this manor was his
liking for good feni. When he was in Bombay, which was most
of the year, he arranged to import a keg of the best feni
available in Goa. The importation of feni was not allowed in
British Bombay, but such a minor impediment was not an
obstacle for a man who presided over a commercial empire such
as his. The liquid was labelled vinegar and all the customs
and excise minions were paid to look the other way.

Such would have been the continued enjoyment of his Goa feni
had it not been for a zealous Customs officer. Not relying
on the label, he had the barrel opened and his suspicions
confirmed. He resealed it with a Customs seal and a case was
filed in the local court against Athaide.

Domingos schemed to have the seal broken although the
evidence was in official custody, refilled with vinegar and
resealed with the official customs seal. When the matter came
up before his lordship the judge, the evidence was brought
into the room and presented to the judge, who asked the court
clerk break to break the seal and verify the contents.

It is vinegar, sir said the Indian clerk to the judge, who
then looked askance at the Custom officer who was a province
witness. The officer then proceeded to taste it and knew the
clerk was right. Knowing that Athaide had done what he had
done, he ran out of the court in shame and humiliation and
jumped to his death on the pavement below.

When the judge heard of what had happened he knew there was
some trickery involved on Domingos' part. He brought down his
gavel and ordered a full enquiry. Dom knew what that meant. A
criminal case of causing suicide, a cheating accusation and
numerous other charges that would lead to his job loss and
the resultant shame to his family.

He had a wedding ring

Makes sense.

Having said that it is very reasonable to develop an ability to think in
languages other than ones native tongue, if that be Konkani. Students learn
English by account of going through school, and in develop the sense of
thinking in it, although this may not be a wide phenomenon. A language is
picks up and reveled in according to ones inclinations, the level of
teaching experienced, and other adjunct affinities. In parallel, a
significant order of endeavoring is expected if one wishes to think in
other languages. Of course, decent training will make it appear to ones
mind that one is thinking in any said language, but that may not be the
case, and does not matter to the many.

* It's no secret that parents in India urge their kids to excel in math
and science, believing that it's the clearest path up the social ladder.
But education is only part of the reason Indian immigrants are reaching the top
executive ranks at major U.S. corporations — most recently Google Inc.'s
appointment of Sundar Pichai this week to chief executive. That followed
Microsoft Corp.'s promotion of Satya Nadella to CEO last year.5 reasons behind
Sundar Pichai's ascent to Google chief executive

Along with Indian immigrants leading companies such as Adobe Systems, Nokia,
Global Foundries and Mastercard, Pichai and Nadella are evidence that a
generation of Indians has benefited from upbringings in a culture that, at its
best, values humility, close-knit family ties and respect for all walks of
life, according to cultural experts and Indian executives themselves.

Such traits are highly valued in the corporate suite, not just in the U.S. but
at any global corporation.

Mix in India's ongoing cultural chaos, which, for those who survive it, offers
real-life lessons in cooperation, teamwork and leadership, and experts say it
makes sense that executives might emerge, capable of steering a sprawling
workforce through rapid change.

A very strong educational base and technical skills are key to many parts of
the tech ecosystem, said Silicon Valley venture capitalist Vinod Khosla, who
co-founded Sun Microsystems. Strong entrepreneurial skills and work ethic ...
and growing up and dealing with scarce resources give the Indian community an
advantage.
It's not just top executives, either. There are 89,000 Indians living in
Silicon Valley, according to the Migration Policy Institute, with most of the
families involved in the tech industry. Another 86,000 Indians live in San
Francisco and Oakland.

Many have jumped into the start-up economy. Vivek Wadhwa, who teaches at
Stanford and Duke universities and has studied Indian American entrepreneurs,
found that by 2012, nearly 16% of start-ups in Silicon Valley had an Indian
co-founder even though Indians represented just 6% of the region's population.
The figure for Indian start-ups is even higher in some areas, such as business
software.

Venktesh Shukla, a venture capitalist and president of the Silicon Valley
networking group the Indus Entrepreneurs, said even in the smallest of
villages, Muslims live next to Hindus and white-collar professionals next to
weavers. Languages, dress and hobbies diverge. Shukla said they were taught to
see the different people as neither superior nor inferior.

Treating people with respect comes very naturally to Indians, he said.
People from homogenous societies need that as an acquired skill.
The respect showed through small gestures when running his own software
start-up, Shukla said. He'd offered his ear especially to employees who weren't
talking much. He kept decision-making open-ended in favor of blanket policies.
It added up to more viewpoints and greater success, he concluded.

Last year, Nadella was the first male CEO to address the annual Grace Hopper
Celebration for Women in Computing. He committed a self-admitted goof onstage,
saying women shouldn't ask for raises but rather trust that they will come
their way.

He acknowledged later that imputing his own experience to others was
insensitive.

It's the same mix of humility and respect that keeps Naghi Prasad in the office
until midnight some days even though he doesn't have a deadline bearing down.
His father had been a linguistics researcher who emphasized that when he asked
his team to work, he did too.

He wanted me to lead by example, to walk the walk, said Prasad, who recently
sold his Silicon Valley ad tech company to Rakuten Marketing and became its
senior vice president for mobile.

Staying behind as a show of support also demonstrates what he saw in a large
Indian family: The success of individuals is crucial to the success of the
family, so it's important to acknowledge the work of others.

Balancing respect with the Silicon Valley ethos of going all out to succeed
isn't easy. But Indian tech leaders said they think expertise on both fronts
gives them an edge, that competitive drive emerges naturally in a country with
a billion people and limited opportunities.

Government corruption, noise, pollution, traffic — every which way you go it's
problem, problem, problem, Wadhwa said. To survive, you

This can become dangerous. Today Alex from Nachinola who runs a bike / car

my moss infested garage and slipped and toppled over.

Very fortunately, nothing happened to him for though he fell on concrete
he didn't fall on his head so my wife and I released a sigh of relief.

Alex regained his composure and said, You should put baking (I think)
soda (or some such soda) or Acid and fix this. He said he would bring acid
 when he came back.

My Home Minister Bibian put some drain cleaning fluid and soda over the
 ground.

Later true to his word when Alex came back with my car he brought acid and
a brush (which he was to leave with me) and said that our efforts were not
enough and poured acid over the ground and with the brush rubbed it over
 the mossy ground.

Thank you Alex. If anyone wants to get their car cleaned then go to Alex.
He charges Rs 200/ or Rs 250/ depending upon what service he provides.
Please ask. I can't remember the charges for washing a bike but I think it
 is below Rs 100/

In the meanwhile I have a question to ask you: what do you do when you
have slippery moss growing on places where you mght step and fall? Do you
have a better solution than Alex's acid?

[Goanet] RISHI AND AMON GOMES TO BE LAUDED TODAY

2015-08-12 Thread Aires Rodrigues
The Goa Legislative Assembly will today on 13th August take up a motion to
congratulate the Calangute young lads Rishi Gomes and Amon Gomes for their
outstanding performance and laudable achievements at this year’s National
Super Cross Championship.

The motion will be moved by the Honorable MLA of Calangute Mr. Michael Lobo
at around 12.30 noon and can be seen live today on Prudent Media, Goa 365
or RDX.

15 year old Rishi and his 14 year old brother Amon have arrived in Malaysia
to represent India at the FIM ASIA MOTOCROSS CHAMPIONSHIP 2015, to be held
on the 14 and 15th of this month. Rishi and Amon are the youngest Indians
to ever represent our country at the official Asian MX Championships.

A proud moment for Calangute and Goa. While the Goa Legislative Assembly
applauds Rishi and Amon today, the two young lads accompanied by their
parents Ashley Gomes (a very distinguished motor racer himself) and Deepali
Gomes get ready for the big contest in Malaysia.

The current cost of the Coastal Road is Rs. 12,000

transportation for 93% Mumbaikars, not the 7% - less than of half of whom will
have access to the coastal road.

§ Only a very
small portion-those living close to the west coast on the western side, will

Enough! We need to stop this wasteful
expenditure, which is a wilful destruction of nature in the name of
‘development’ and this false ‘solution’ to the city’s traffic woes.

[Goanet] LEST WE FORGET GOA’S TWO IMMORTAL HEROES

2015-08-12 Thread Aires Rodrigues
Today August 12th is the death anniversary of Goa’s first Chief Minister
Dayanand Bandodkar while 17th October is the first leader of the Opposition
Dr Jack Sequeira’s death anniversary. . But for Dr Jack Sequeira’s then
tireless efforts during that historic Opinion Poll which was held on
16th January
1967, Goa today would have been reduced to a mere district if not taluka
of Maharashtra with less than a handful of MLAs representing us.

Though Dayanand Bandodkar may have initially been for merging Goa with
Maharastra, he respected the people’s verdict and later with Dr Jack
Sequeira as the fiery voice of the Opposition they toiled with a vision and
passion towards the development of Goa. Unlike many of today’s politicians
who are self-centered, they relentlessly raised and pursued issues
concerning the backward, down-trodden, and neglected communities of
Goa. Leaders of their integrity, honesty and commitment we may now never
see in this shoddy arena of political pygmies.

Dayanand Bandodkar and Dr Jack Sequeira dared to speak from their heart and
always walk the talk. Only a few of such politicians still remain in our
midst and will also be always remembered for the good they have done for
Goa. About the rest and in particularly some of the current politicians in
power who have been steering and navigating Goa down the tube there will be
no obituary to write and no land remaining to even raise a Samadhi, leave
alone a statue in their memory.

It is imperative that students today in our schools and colleges should be
made aware of the very rich and invaluable contribution to Goa by
Dayanand Bandodkar and Dr Jack Sequeira. They cannot be consigned as our
forgotten heroes. Jack Sequeira and Dayanand Bandodkar must be rolling in
their heavenly abode at the way Goa is being uncaringly misgoverned today.

As a school student I had the privilege of interacting with both
Dayanand Bandodkar and Dr Jack Sequeira. I recollect with nostalgia
witnessing those great debates by Dr Jack Sequeira in the Legislative
Assembly and the pointed but witty replies by Dayanand Bandodkar. Today the
Goa Legislative assembly has been reduced to a mere classroom kept
entertained with the tales of Birbal being narrated.

Politics today is no longer a mission, not even an honest profession. It
has been abridged to a scoundrel’s last resort. It has become a ruthless
business, with morals and ethics twisted, thrown to the winds, and long
buried deep in the slush of ignorance and thuggery. Those belonging to a
genre of politicians with qualities of head and heart cannot survive in
today’s political pitch. It is only for those who are thick skinned and
hypocrites to the core, always ready to breach and bend all the rules to
survive.

It is distressing to see and be witness to the continuing rampant
destruction and devastation of Goa. In 2012 we were promised a ‘Parivartan’
and at the 2014 Parliamentary elections lured again with ‘ache Din’, but
Goa is sadly by the day just getting further corroded beyond recognition. It
should have been the endeveaour of those in power to at least salvage and
safeguard what remains of Goa. Unfortunately Goa is getting defaced at an
electrifying speed. Posterity will never forgive the rulers of recent years
for their selfish and dubious role in this irreparable damage and
destruction of what was once a beautiful Goa, the Paradise of the East.

[Goanet] MoI - Anissue that affects all Goans - Herald Edit - By Tomazinho Cardozo

2015-08-12 Thread Florian Lobo
*MoI - An Issue that affects all Goans - H- by Tomasinho Cardozo*
http://www.epaperoheraldo.in/Details.aspx?id=14870boxid=153434uid=dat=8/12/2015

COMMENTS:

Well accepted that MoI is an issue that affects all Goans. But reading
through all the statistics that Tomazinho has written as an educator, the
question is 'DOES HE UNDERSTAND WHAT EXACTLY MoI IS??. GSRP believes that
his thinking is wavering.

For Tomazinho's kind information, MoI means that ' When a kid of 3
years of age, who has mastered his language of birth (understanding and
speaking) sits on the learning bench of a PRIMARY SCHOOL, to learn about
all the PRIMARY things that it will require to run its life ahead, with
these DO's and DON'Ts imbedded in its bloodstream, never to forget ( even
if these are later suppressed voluntarily, but echoing from within), in the
language that it understands fully and completely.

If at this stage, the kid is TAUGHT another Language because this language
will make him the KING of the WORLD, the purpose is totally and completely
defeated.

Grants to Primary Schools was the BAIT that erstwhile MGP of Shashikala
Bandodkar dangled in front of the school managements has nothing to do with
MoI.

Tomazinho, it would be worthwhile if you understood this before you call it
a day.

GSRP

PS. MoI may not be just Konkani for Goans. It is also Portuguese and
English on a percentage of 1-2 to 10, respectively, for Goa. BTW: Marathi
cannot be MoI for Goa as it is a learnt language and not spoken language
since birth by Goans, universally.
