Dear Mr. Prime Minister:

I write to you today because like so many of my fellow citizens, I am both
angry and anguished. I am aware that a missive from someone like me -
"presstitute", "bazaaru", "sickular" and worst of all, "anti-national"- will
be most likely junked by your office as not worthy of your time.

In any case, ever since I reported on the 2002 riots in Gujarat, I am among the
journalists you have clearly shunned and disliked - that is, of course,
entirely your prerogative. But this week, I read that you told opposition
parties that you are the PM of "all of India, not just of the BJP", and I
thought I would hold you to that promise and ask for your attention as a
citizen's entitlement.

Modiji, I take you back to the years before you became Chief Minister and began
the "othering" of large sections of the English media whom you were convinced
were out to get you: when you were the approachable and friendly General
Secretary of the BJP, and I was a young reporter still learning the ropes. If
you remember those years - and I am told you never forget (or forgive) - you
would recall that I first cut my teeth as a journalist reporting a war from the
frontline in Kargil in 1999. I was still in my 20s, and the intimacy and
immediacy of that overwhelming exposure would make me a life-long admirer of
our military. My emphasis, even back then, was to humanize and personalize the
stories of soldiers in the trenches and ensure they would not remain faceless,
nameless statistics. Over the years, the bonds I forged with the Fauj only grew
deeper - my reporting has often taken me back to the border, to the Line of
Control and a variety of conflict zones to where they've been deployed. Over
the past two decades, I have done hundreds of news programs devoted to the
Soldier - the discrepancies in hardship allowances between jawans and
bureaucrats, the shameful mountain of government litigation against disabled
soldiers who are dragged to court for pensions, the pending promise of One Rank
One Pension, the bottlenecks in defense procurement, and the many sacrifices of
our men and women in uniform.

So I write this as a sentimental and proud Indian who has often been teased by
my more left-leaning friends and colleagues for my rather maudlin and
unintellectual patriotism. I would submit that the binaries that spokespersons
of your government have created (aided by the hyper-nationalist drum-beating of
channels like Times Now and News X) are absolutely false. It is entirely
possible to deeply respect the military and feel ashamed of the multiple
manipulations, doctored videos, police excesses, government heavy-handedness,
brazen hooliganism and ominous environment of intimidation that the crackdown
on JNU has revealed. In fact, for your party to use the death of ten Siachen
bravehearts to validate the gross over-reach we have seen in JNU is to, in my
view, cynically exploit the honour of the uniform. I wish there was half as
much outrage when your good friend Jayalalithaa's photograph was placed on the
coffin of one of the Siachen soldiers by her minister, who was then proudly
photographed with it.

Modi ji, I would also like to take you back to a man whose name you love
invoking - Atal Bihari Vajpayee. I remember the tingling excitement of hope and
optimism that ran through my veins as I stood among the crowds in Srinagar in
2003 and heard him discard the rigidities of legalism and offer "Insaniyat" as
the framework for reconciliation in the Kashmir Valley. Sadly, in its handling
of the JNU controversy, the government has subverted the Vajpayee legacy in one
fell swoop - I assume with your approval.

Where Vajpayee promised that Humanism would override the literal application of
the law as he stretched out a hand even to pro-Azaadi separatists, this week we
have seen a singular absence of generosity or empathy from the team you lead.
The Home Minister went so far as to link students to the dreaded Lashkar
terrorist Hafiz Saeed, based on a police endorsement of a fake Twitter account.
Not just have we not seen any evidence of terror links, but it now appears that
the video used to slap a sedition charge on Kanhaiya Kumar, the JNU student
leader, has been

[Goanet] DID RIBANDAR PARISH PRIEST FATHER LAWRENCE FERNANDES CROSS THE THRESHOLD?

2016-02-24 Thread Aires Rodrigues
I write this with a heavy heart, a very heavy heart indeed! But, if you
read ahead, you will realize I have no choice but…..

In speaking out I may be hurting some people but by maintaining silence I
would be failing in my duty to stand up for something that is very
basically wrong.

At the outset let me say that I have the highest respect for the most
Reverend Father Lawrence Fernandes who has been a very proactive Parish
Priest of Ribandar since May 2014. He has tirelessly toiled to uplift our
church in every way possible.

But his very questionable conduct over the last fortnight in the current
Corporation of City of Panaji (CCP) polls has left me in great despair and
in a deep sense of anguish. It has totally shaken that rock solid faith and
trust I have had in Father Lawrence Fernandes.

The background: - Ribandar has two wards which are part of CCP - Ward 29
which has this time been reserved for Women and Ward 30 which stands
reserved for the OBC.

In the current CCP poll, Ms. Vanita Fernandes alias Kshama, a known and
liked Ribandar resident, was keen to contest from Ward 29. She had
contested from here in 2011 and had polled a whopping 450 votes but lost by
a mere 120-vote margin. Vanita, who is an active member of the Ribandar
Parish was persistently pressurized and unduly coerced by Father Lawrence
Fernandes to NOT contest the CCP elections against the BJP.

When I discovered the fact of this undue, unwarranted and wrong pressure
and intimidation being exerted on Vanita, I did call Father Fernandes to
respectfully seek an explanation. His very distasteful defense was that he
had to oblige BJP MLA Sidharth Kunkolienkar and that if the BJP candidate
was not elected in Ribandar, the government funds for the repairs of the
Church would not be forthcoming.

Frankly, I was flabbergasted and stunned with this horrendous justification
given. Should a man of GOD be swayed by such considerations….? You decide!

Religious shrines are Institutions for the upliftment of the flock and
certainly CANNOT be a den for political chicanery. Father Lawrence
Fernandes has exceeded his brief by acting contrary to our cherished holy
and democratic values. EVERY desiring candidate has a right to contest and
EVERY voter has a sacred right to vote for a candidate of his or her
choice. That is what Democracy is all about!

A Priest has an obligation to proclaim the Church’s teachings. It is up to
each of us, examining our individual conscience, to discern which party and
candidate affirms, believes and appreciates those teachings, and hence whom
to vote.

Pope John Paul II asked in his 1993 address for Priests to remember their
roles and to follow Jesus’ example: "Like Jesus, a priest must renounce
involvement in political activity, especially by not taking sides, which
almost inevitably happens."

Dear Father Lawrence Fernandes, we will always remember your laudable
service to the Ribandar Church. Sadly, however, we cannot forget that you
high-handedly denied and punctured Vanita Fernandes’ aspiration to contest
the CCP election and serve the community. Your defense as to why you had to
do so defies all logic. The events have been very distasteful, but may God
decide who was wrong.

Would we sell our faith for thirty pieces of silver? If this can be the
precursor to the run up to the 2017 Assembly elections, God help Goa.

But for now, having emptied my aching heart, I feel lighter. Despite what
has happened, we will continue to love and respect you Rev Father Lawrence
Fernandes, for “…. to err is human and to forgive is divine”

 AMEN.

THE terms used for exemplary collections of literary texts,
such as anthology, chrestomathy, or the florilégio of
colonial Portuguese education, generally derive from the idea
of a collection of flowers, the idea of what, in a
nineteenth-century literary context, Matthew Arnold called
the best that has been thought and said. The principle
guiding the selection of Portuguese-language Goan short
stories presented here in translation is, however, somewhat
different. My aim is to produce something like a chorography
of this literary production, a representative mapping out of
the range of authors, styles, positions and themes found
within its archive.

It seems to me that the short story anthology bears some
comparison with another composite short story form, the
short-story sequence. But where the sequence is single
authored and gains coherence from some common setting or
thread, the representative (as opposed to thematic) anthology
appears at first to be far more eclectic. Yet just as the
short-story sequence often aims to give account of a
delimited community, so collections such as the present
anthology attempt to provide a cross-section of stories that
might vary in subject, era and worldview but which share a
desire to treat some commonality. Where the short-story
anthology departs from the sequence is by removing its
component narratives from their original context and then
re-contextualising them in a collection. In so doing the
anthology proposes discernibly shared lines within literary
history. Though I have tried to make a selection that is as
varied as possible, inevitably the choices made reflect to a
degree my own personal taste.

Given that this anthology represents the autopsy of a dead

such as Ave Cleto Afonso's O Vaticnio do Swârga (2013) --

The possibility of such surprises continuing to appear seems
rather remote however.] I have opted here to present the
texts reproduced chronologically. This linearity does have
the advantage of highlighting the discontinuities within this
literary tradition, if it can be so called.

In these stories, which span roughly 1864 to 1987,
a variety of positions towards Portuguese
colonialism and the wider Indian nation, towards
issues of family, caste, society, religion and
language can be discerned. While all of these
issues are both familiar today and staples of
contemporary Goan writing in various languages, the
stories presented here, whatever their quality, do
display some particularities. Perhaps today, for
the Anglophone Goan reader, a point of interest
might be the differential cosmopolitanism of these
writers, their orientation towards currents of
Lusophone and continental European literature and
thought alongside their familiarity with the native
Goan scene and, at times, with Anglo-Indian
currents. In the rest of my introduction I will
attempt to provide what biographical details are
  currently available concerning the authors
included, give some context to their stories and
try to highlight some thematic lines that run
  throughout the anthology.

Júlio Gonçalves

The first stories in the anthology are by Luís Manuel Júlio
Frederico Gonçalves (1846-1896), better known simply as
J. Gonçalves. According to Aleixo Manuel da Costa, he was
referred to by his contemporaries as the Alexandre Herculano
of Goa, a reference to the father of the historical novel in
Portugal and an indication of the foundational role Gonçalves
was deemed to have played in the establishment of
Portuguese-language Goan writing.

This status is due to Gonçalves having founded the Ilustração
Goana, which Devi and Seabra describe as the most influential
literary magazine in the cultural and literary life of
nineteenth-century Goa. The appearance of the llustração
Goana can be seen as the culmination of a gradual process.

The period of the Regeneration in Portugal (1851-1868), in
which a great effort to modernise the country was made under
the Constitutional Monarchy, saw the re-introduction of the
press to Goa, improvements in Portuguese-language education
and the development of a more liberal political scenario in
the territory.

Over the nineteenth century as a whole, a spate of
publications appeared, such as A Biblioteca de Goa

the masses never improve.

In keeping with these sentiments, GSRP will abolish all payments to Ex-MLAs
of Goa and also re-visit the monthly emoluments receivable by the incumbent
Mlas until the Public Debt burden of the State is totally and completely
removed to free the state from this crippling Public Debt burden created by
the very MLAs who are receiving the state bonanza for life. The present
Public Debt is at Rs. 66,000 crores wherein our gen-next has no future.
