India:

A group of Christians in the Indian city of Bhopal are upset over the use of
the cross in a television advertisement that paints Christianity as a negative
foreign influence upon the country.

"It is shocking that the cross, which is the symbol of Jesus, is shown in the
advertisement," said Jerry Paul, from Sarva Isai Mahasabha, a Christian
organization reported The Huffington Post.

Sarva Isai Mahasabha has written to the man behind the advert - Yoga
guru-turned-businessman Baba Ramdev - about their concerns over the
"objectionable and absolutely unwarranted" use of the cross to promote
Patanjali Ayurveda's food and personal care products.

In the advert, that "celebrates" Indian Independence Day, several "harmful
foreign products" are represented by symbols of the cross.

"Christianity has been in India for more than a thousand years and it was not
brought here by imperialists or any foreign government, so creating such false
impressions is wrong," Paul added.

jc, I believe I have a fair idea of what the impact of the next few
appointments to the SCOTUS will be. IF the mother of Obama gets to choose
(the next four), I expect superstition to be jettisoned from all US
government proceedings. IF the aggrandizing one wins, there will be a slew

Court and the White House will be re-branded as the Trump House.

Here is well, how people in the US view Bwana Trump.

TRUMP BLAMES BAD POLL NUMBERS ON EXISTENCE OF NUMERICAL SYSTEM
 AUGUST 15, 2016

YOUNGSTOWN, OHIO —Donald J. Trump lashed out at a new target on Monday,
blaming his bad poll numbers on the existence of the numerical system.

In sometimes rambling remarks at an outdoor rally in Ohio, the Republican
Presidential nominee called the numerical system “rigged” and unleashed a
torrent of abuse on numbers themselves, calling them “disgusting” and “the
lowest form of life.”

“It’s why I won’t release my taxes,” he said. “They’re full of goddam
numbers.”

While Republican candidates in the past have attempted to exploit their
supporters’ distrust of math, Trump is believed to be the first nominee to
call into question the numerical system itself.

Behind the scenes, G.O.P. insiders fretted that, in attacking the very
existence of numbers, Trump was veering wildly off message.

“He should be talking about Hillary Clinton, and instead he’s going off on
integers,” one insider said.

Officially, aides remained upbeat about the campaign and denied reports
that Trump was spending an increasingly large portion of each day angrily
muttering to himself and chewing on paper.

The Rada you have misspelt is actually Radha (probable abbr for Radharao or

This morning you misspelt a very famous name as Benjamin 'Frankline' in your

[Goanet] The Car Wrap Scam

2016-08-15 Thread Roland
This one started in the US (as it usually does), is going around Toronto and
it's only a matter of time before it goes elsewhere (say India).

https://www.consumer.ftc.gov/blog/rap-car-wrap-scams

In Canada it takes about 5 business days for a deposited cheque to clear. After
that period the bank will remove the hold if they have put one (for reliable
and longstanding clients they don't even put a hold). But if the cheque is
returned even after say 30 days, the bank has legal recourse to get the money
you have withdrawn back from you. In other words all onus is on you for an
unlimited period for the cheque you have deposited.

This is the weak spot where scams operate. They send you a cheque, ask you to
keep money promised to you and make you wire transfer the balance. With wire
transfers there is no legal recourse viz once the money is gone, it's gone.

Most people don't know this. That is why those scams get away with what they
do.

[Goanet] Papua New Guinea: Greed vs sanity - Next steps to stop the deep sea mine

2016-08-15 Thread Robin Viegas
From: b sabha

From: Avaaz.org mailto:av...@avaaz.org>>

Dear friends,

A Canadian mining company has a license for an insane idea that could become a
planetary disaster: the world's first deep sea mine.

We all know how toxic mines can devastate land-based ecosystems -- imagine
corporations unleashed to dig up the ocean floor for minerals, far from any
scrutiny. It's the last thing our dying oceans need!

The good news is the company is having trouble raising funds. Let's drop an
ocean of condemnation on this project, scare any further investors away, and
make sure this horrific new threat to our environment dies quickly. Click to
sign the petition, which will be publicised and sent to every potential
investor:

https://secure.avaaz.org/en/png_nautilus_sust/?tFYWOab

Of course, the site chosen for the mine is right next to one of the world's
ocean treasures, a rich ecosystem off the coast of Papua New Guinea that has
everything from teeming coral reefs to sperm whales. It's a sign of what's to
come if we don't stop this monstrous emerging industry.

The mining company has never operated at this scale, and is already in
financial trouble. The project is risky. If we make it even more hazardous by
showing the significant economic uncertainties, we might actually stop the
mine, and make sure the industry gets a cautionary tale about messing with our
oceans!

Across the planet, we're in a battle to maintain a sane balance between humans
and the natural world, a balance that is necessary for sustainable development,
and that scientists tell us is necessary for our own survival, as well as
countless other species. It's greed vs sanity -- let's make sure the right one
wins:

https://secure.avaaz.org/en/png_nautilus_sust/?tFYWOab

Scientists who study ecosystems talk about how remarkably interdependent they
are. We humans are enormously dependent for our survival on small creatures
like plankton, or larger ones like sea urchins. We often think of humans as a
virus, predatory on our ecosystem. But Avaaz is a movement for people who seek
to be protectors and stewards of our natural world, to eventually live in
harmony with it.

Ever since he started his bid for the Prime Ministership, Narendra Modi has
worked hard to build his image. Wiping off the stigma of 2002 communal riots in
Gujarat was a daunting task. Transformation from being seen as a divisive
personality to the harbinger of progress needed immense effort. There was the
additional embarrassment of Modi having been denied an American visa in 2005.
In 2009, public relation giant APCO Worldwide was hired to promote ‘Vibrant
Gujarat’. APCO promoted Gujarat as much as it promoted Modi. Aided by some
surrogate media and businessmen, within years, Gujarat and Modi became
synonymous with development. The fact that Gujarat is abysmally low on the
human developmental
index
and the raging caste discrimination in the state were swept under the carpet.
The grand finale of Modi’s transformation came in May 2014, when the people of
India elected him with full majority.

As Prime Minister, Modi has left no stone unturned to enhance his image in
India and the West. Calling for a 10-year
moratorium
on communal riots and caste-based violence, he asked the youth to follow him.
Although he rarely commented or exercised authority when cases of social
discrimination came into the spotlight — like Dalit scholar Rohith Vemula’s
suicide or allegations of rising fundamentalism in many parts of India — Modi
made frequent trips across the world where he held excellent public events. In
United States of America, for example, Modi’s Madison Square spectacle in New
York and SAP Center appearance in California (September 2015) received good
local media coverage. Modi’s mission seemed to have been accomplished with even
President Barack Obama calling him “Dear Friend Narendra”.

And then Una happened.

Four half-naked Dalits getting beaten up in broad daylight, tied like slaves,
right in front of Una police station in Gujarat — the incident took place on
July 11, 2016. The video and images went viral, and sent shockwaves across
India. Dalits refused to perform their ‘traditional’ roles of disposing animal
carcasses, citing the threats posed to them by gau rakshaks. The mass pledge to
not lift cow
carcasses
has been termed as revolutionary. Sociologists and human rights activists have
hailed this as a historic revolution.

Meanwhile, angry Dalits in the state intensified their protests while the Prime
Minister — true to his style of not talking about social issues — maintained a
silence on this ghastly incident in his home state. The spark of the Una
protest reached every nook and corner of Gujarat. So much so that, the protests
caught international media attention and criticism.

In its August 3 editorial, headlined “Modi and India’s
Dalits”,
 The New York Times wrote,

A protest in the Indian state of Gujarat’s largest city, Ahmedabad, on Sunday
by thousands of Dalits — members of India’s lowest castes — has brought to a
head the contradiction between Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s promise of
economic opportunity for all and a politics of division driven by right-wing
Hindu ideology. … The cow, sacred to Hindus, has become a lightning rod for the
Hindu right under Mr. Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party government. Mr. Modi
himself has exploited the cow slaughter issue at rallies.

The editorial ended with pretty strong words for the PM, cautioning that the
turmoil in the state could hamper his party if “Mr Modi does not break his
shameful silence of cow vigilantes.”

Three days after the NYT editorial castigating him, Modi finally broke his
silence on August 7 — almost a

[Goanet] Dipa Karmarkar queen of Hearts

2016-08-15 Thread Nelson Lopes
DIPA KARMARKAR QUEEN OF HEARTS

For the very first time in Inida, a gymnastic athlete GIRL has entered a
highly competitive sports arena The previous males participants were in
year 1952, 1954, 1956 .She claimed Bronze medal in Glasgow common wealth
Games 2013. She would be 23years on Tuesday after participating on
Independence day at Rio 2016 and may have looked forward as the birthday
gift, Her target was to qualify for the finals and she succeeded in her
goals. Her PRODUNOVA move is named after Elena Produnova, a vault of death,
extremely dangerous, toughest maneuvers, with highest degree of difficulty
in case of mishap and performed only by 4 others so far.

Having been able to be the finalist is in itself is a great achievement for
individual efforts and the Country too ,after a long wait of 52 years,
thus creating history for girl gymnast..Her competitors were more
experienced, exposed and also winners of past performances to her credit.
Dipa`s was maiden appearance and sudden climb to steep heights. Hence she
was fighting against a wall of concrete, Neverthelss, she was focused and
from visual appearances gave her very best. Her best nevertheless has to be
measured and compared against other reputed gymnasts from all over the
world .In her performance, she did not disappoint hopes and aspirations of
millions of Indian supporters, as he came fourth, marginally missing a
medal. There was no frustration on her face , as she waited with bathed
breadth and accepted the outcome, At that point of time she appeared to be
in the reckoning for a piece of precious decorative medal of her life

In India there is a monumental struggle to compete with least facilities.
In fact she had to rely on improvised apparatus during her training and did
not have the luxury of highly sophisticated coach, and external exposure
The other competitors undoubtedly were more privileged with all types of
support and rigorous, long training under world class supervision, Indians
unknowingly expect results at such venues to salvaged the pride of Nation,
hungry for oven a single medal somehow. Who had ever heard of Dipa before
Olympics and her potential to represent the Country in this highly,
skilled, sophisticated sports field. Dipa undoubtedly comes from a humble,
financially poor and socially elitist background.

In her determination she has opened the doors for others to follow and the
Authorities too, to encourage potential athletes with physical facilities,
training, maintenance, finance, international exposure and commensurate
diet. Dipa has gone so far that was not even dreamed off .She will
certainly be an inspiration for others to follow the beaten path to glory
and self satisfaction in future, Dipa is young and has lot of reserve
potential , which must be nourished, nutured to provide her another
opportunity, platform to show case her skill All is not lost by one single
Olympics and the Nation is proud of her achievement in spite of trying
circumstance and wishes her best in future

She missed the mark, agonizingly by a whisker of 0.150 ponits,. Her score
of 15.066 is the highest among 14 competitors The two maneuvers Tsukava-720
and Prudunova earned her 14.866 & 15.216 She is all for praise to coach
Biswas Nandi, she practiced 1000 times

Liberal review of CBC's future includes comparison with BBC

http://www.cbc.ca/beta/news/politics/cbc-bbc-melanie-joly-liberal-radio-canada-1.3717008

-- CBC's mandate "is anchored more explicitly in the idea of building a
shared national consciousness and identity," unlike the BBC which is
focused more on "sustaining citizenship and promoting cultural excellence."

-- The BBC is more outward-looking, with a mandate "to bring the UK to
the world," while CBC's international service is an add-on rather than a
core purpose.

-- The British government has an arm's-length procedure for appointing
BBC directors, unlike the CBC.

Would be interesting to review Australia and New Zealand as well...

[Goanet] KONKNNI Devanagiri towards extinction ?

2016-08-15 Thread Devak Argham
Konknni Devanagari towards extinction

If statistics are to be believed, some months back I had read that
around a few thousand Indian languages had become extinct due to
various reasons. Romi Konknni lovers were vociferous during the
agitation to give Konknni its rightful place. But like tissues they
were used and meant to be thrown. Deceitfully and with political
Chicanery Devanagari was added thereby Romi Konknni became the step
mother. One point to be noted here. Romi Konknni has survived
depression and oppression be it from the Portuguese or present day
self centered protagonist.

Than followed the bombarding of Marathi vocabulary into Devanagari
Konknni. Thus now making it look like a dialect of Marathi as some
say. The long term strategy, looks like it is working. Slowly Mauxi
is taking the place of Mai and about to kick her out of her own house.
For those who like to say Konknni is a dialect of Marathi, let me
point out that our South Indian languages of Tamil and Malayalam have
a lot of vocabulary similar and hence one is able to understand and
speak either language. They do not say Tamil is a dialect of
Malayalam or vice versa. Belgavi known formerly as Belgaum had a
sizeable Marathi population. No body demanded Marathi to be made
official language of Karnataka. Kannadagis, very cleverly have taken
over and Belgaum is forgotten. Its Belagavi.

Ek boail mhunta Marathi dusro Boail mhunta Konknni zalear Boial ghadi
hi jichem nav Goa Forward kitem korum mukar vortoli Goemchi Gaddi. ?

For Konknni to flourish and survive the self centered protagonist have
to think twice and see if their decision had any positive results.
Its nice to see Kannad Script Konknni in Karnataka, flourishing
under Govt. patronage and its lovers. Romi Konknni has survived 450
years and still going strong with the patronage of its lovers. Long
Live Mai Bhas Konknni

[Goanet] my column in today's OHeraldo

2016-08-15 Thread Eugene Correia
Independence and its discontents

Eugene Correia

It was on the eve of Independence Day that Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru
delivered his memorable speech, A Tryst With Destiny, to the Constituent
Assembly, and the next day he triumphantly proclaimed from the ramparts of
the Red Fort that India has woken up to a new dawn. It was a steering
speech which till today brings tears to my eyes, just as the tune of " Aye
mere watan ke logo", which translates into English as " O! the people of my
country. The soulful lyrics and the emotional rendering of the patriotic
song by none other than one of the greatest Goans, Lata Mangeskhar, in the
National Stadium in 1963, brought tears to Nehru's eyes.
Moved by the song, Nehru is said to have remarked, “ Those who don't feel
inspired by ' Aye mere watan ke logo' don't deserve to be called a
Hindustani.” This patriotic song is revered and reverberates across the
length and breadth of India on every Independence Day. On this auspicious
day, we pledge our allegiance to our motherland and celebrate the freedom
that many Indians, though Goans in Goa were still under colonial rule but
some had their hearts and soul in British India, fought for and died for.
The deep, thoughtful words of the Mangeshkar song and the stirring words of
Nehru’s speech will forever remain in my memory till I die. I will die an
Indian, though technically I am now a Canadian citizen.
I was called an anti- Indian by some Hindu Indians in Toronto after I wrote
a denunciatory report on the then India’s consul- general Chandra Mohan
Bandari whose act of filming an exhibition at Toronto’s famous tourist
landmark, Harbourfront, put up by the group owing loyalty to one of India’s
progressive leftist group. It was only because some Hindu friends of mine
informed these pro- consulate Hindus that I am a thorough Indian and what I
wrote is right in the context that Harbourfront officials were angry at the
consul’s behaviour.
It diminished the status of India’s consular representative who could
easily have asked any person from the groups who are close to the consulate
to do the filming instead of himself going there with a camcorder in hand.
Criticising Indian consular staff or also the Indian government should not
be considered as same as criticising India.
We have seen the way the present government and its legion of supporters,
including some hard line groups that owe allegiance to the BJP, accuse
those who cross swords with those in power are termed “ anti- national.” No
wonder that the now demoted minister, Smriti Irani, has been mockingly
called “ aunty national.” To me, it seems that Ms Irani had become too big
for her shoes.
The way she was going about “ saffronizing” the educational system, it
could be a national tragedy if she had continued in the position as HRD
minister.
No wonder the Twitter world went buzzing when Modi, prodded by BJP
president Amit Shah, had this heavyweight of a minister shifted to mind
India’s textile policy. Maybe she was turning out to be a political “ hot
potato” and was possibly seen as a liability to BJP’s political future,
particularly when the party is gearing for the assembly elections in some
states, including Goa.
Where I live, some trees are showing early signs of shedding their green
colour. Eh, as they say in Canada, Autumn is approaching. It seems Autumn
has already set in the BJP government, with Modi having changed colour. He
is now suddenly appearing to be close to the Dalits. If Modi is wooing
Dalits, Amit Shah was having lunch with a Dalit family. Shah was obviously
looking for a photo- op. In the beloved Gujarat of both Modi and Shah, the
Dalits are in arms. The atrocities committed against Dalits are nerve-
wrecking.
Now appeasement seems to be a political tool. Wasn’t it was the same BJP
who berated other political parties, especially the Congress, for appeasing
the minorities? To me, the Unity in Diversity slogan is just that — a
slogan.
Today, Narendra Modi will climb the ramparts of Red Fort and thunder away,
praising the government’s achievements, particularly the social schemes
with varied names.
He has asked people for suggestions to incorporate them in his speech.
Known for his oratory, Modi must be reminded what Benjamin Frankline said,
“ Well done is better than well said.” True, people have short memories.
The Dalit issue in Gujarat only brings back the memory of the Muslim
carnage there.
One cannot whitewash history.
Modi has perhaps learnt from twin Gujarat events and want to mend his ways.
Rooting out the rotten apples, as in the case of Ms Irani, is a good move.
Public cynicism seems to be very high now and whatever the government does
or tries to do is met with justifiable censure or disdain.
No doubt the government is trying to win back the trust of those who see
the party as pandering to hardliners in the Sangh Parivar family. The cow
vigilantism is a current example, and it’s apparently aimed at the Muslims
who seem to be more often the BJP targ

[Goanet] Independence Day poem -- 'Freedom' by Armando Menezes (1962)

2016-08-15 Thread V M
Freedom

Freedom is but a mandman's dream,
A dance aong an endless lane.
The slogans that you shout but seem
To drown the clanging of the chain.

Freedom is but a posturing,
Before a necromantic glass;
The old old song you newly sing,
Falsetto, like an infant class.

Freedom is greed, is violence,
Lust, and the lordship of the fool.
Freedom's not knowing either whence
Or whither, of chance be the rule.

We dreamed, and wake up from sleep:
And dark indeed the day to see
When Freedom's image cannot keep
Even a poet's loyalty

Bwana D'Souza,
The good news is that the difference between those from Canada and the USA
- is that the Canadians actually elected Rob Ford to office.

The bad news is that Trump is no Rob Ford. Rob Ford understood what it
takes to get elected and did so. "Donald Trump is the kind of person who
