Marshall,

You are right about what the economists have been saying about why trading with
other partners brings in efficiency.

But what 'Economics' says is totally different from what 'Politics' have to
say. According to one of the commandments in politics, "Thou shall not take my
job away and give it to my neighbor ... err... trading partner".

Go ask Hillary why she lost (Of course, I know why Trump won) :)

HARMONY OF RELIGIONS

by

EduardoFaleiro

Religion has emerged as a major source of conflict across the globe.
Ideological strife has now given place to the “clash of civilizations” and
it is felt that in the foreseeable future, religion will be a major source
of conflict within and among nations. The possibilities of conflict are
greater in countries such as India where different cultures and religions
do meet. However, such clashes can be prevented if appropriate strategies
are formulated and implemented at an early stage so as to ensure religious
harmony.

The United Nations designates the first week of February every year as the
World Interfaith Harmony Week. The Universal Solidarity Movement for Value
Education for Peace should be congratulated on this occasion for its
outstanding work towards interfaith harmony and unity of all people of
India.

All religions lead to the same God and differences among them are not
essential. Indeed, the goal of every religion is the same. The spirit of
the founders of the different religions was the same though rituals differ.
All religions proclaim similar principles. Mahatma Gandhi, who devoted a
large part of his life to the study of religion and to discussion with
religious leaders of all faiths, affirmed that every scripture should be
treated equally, that there is no justification for the claim of supremacy
of any one religion and that we are all children of the same God. He said
“What is needed is a living friendly contact among the followers of the
religions of the world and not a clash among them in the fruitless attempt
on the part of each community to show the supremacy of its faith over the
rest”. Swami Vivekananda asserted that all religions preach ethics, virtues
and good character. Yet, all major religions instead of uniting people
often divide due to lack of understanding of purpose of religion by their
followers.

India has the largest number of religions and religious people in the
world. In our country, we have millions of Hindus, Muslims, Christians,
Sikhs, Jains and Buddhists. There are also Parsees and Jews. We have eight
religions in India, the maximum number of religions and religious people
anywhere in the world. Communal harmony is essential for peace and
stability in India.

Art. 51A of the Constitution of India affirms that it is the fundamental
duty of every citizen to promote harmony amongst the people of India
transcending religious, linguistic and regional or sectional diversities.
Respect for religious diversity and interfaith dialogue are an essential
and an urgent need.

Some years ago, I decided to study the issues that affect inter religious
peace and harmony in India. In this connection, I visited several of our
States and held meetings with leaders and organizations of different
religions. I spent the month of September 2004 in the villages of Orissa,
in the districts of Kandhamal and Mayurbanj, where Graham Staines and his
two sons were killed some years earlier. The purpose of my visit was to
study and understand the open confrontation that has existed for long in
that State between Christian and Hindu missionaries for conversion and
re-conversion (*gharvapsi*) respectively. I informed Chief Minister Shri
Naveen Patnaik of what I had observed in those areas and he promised to
take necessary action. Mainline Christian theologians see both the
SanghParivar’sHindutva ideology and Christian campaigns for evangelization
of India as having a fundamentalist attitude and an aggressive methodology
to achieve their respective goals.

Proselytism is opposed on several grounds; it attacks other religious
beliefs and practices and asserts that its own religion is the only way to
salvation. It is often supported by financial resources and marketing
techniques that make local religious activities seem second rate and
shabby.

The Federation of Asian Bishops Conferences (FABC) articulates its
theological vision thus "Asia is the womb of the great world religions. All
great scriptural religions were born on Asian soil. The Church has to be in
constant dialogue with the religions of Asia and to embark or this with
great seriousness… There may be more truth about God and life than it is
made known to us through the Jesus of history and the Church. As such
Christians who take Christ's injunction seriously must search for this
truth in the various religions of the world" (FABC Resource Manual for
Catholics in Asia, pp189, 288)
On the question of proselytism the FABC says "a phenomenon which continues
to awaken the most resentment among the peoples of Asia is that of
proselytism and conversion. In the minds of Asians, the Church's primary
objective seems to be to convert as many people as she can so as to
increase her little flock. Church expansion is also seen as a Western
extension. The increase in the number of Church movements engaged in
aggressive and militant evangelization (understood in the very narrow sense
of the word) is certainly a

MD,

The above is crony capitalism. Carrier cannot compete in the US market. As
such, it resorted to extracting funds from the tax payers on the pretense
that those funds will keep jobs in the US. To make this easy to understand,
when Carrier makes a profit – those profits are distributed amongst the
owners. When it makes a loss, the public has to bear the loss. Simply put,
after the Carrier/Trump deal, every corp in the US will now be angling on
how to make friends with Trump and extract funds/subsidies from the US
govt. I watched the very same thing happen in Tanzania 30 years ago -
before its economy collapsed.

The way capitalism is supposed to work is that new ideas create new jobs –
killing the old ones in the process. As an example, there is a need for
bayonets and skilled bayonet makers in the US - but everyone else needs a
gun.

Apple headquartered its European operations in Ireland and used their tax
laws to pay a tax rate of .005% on its profits. Those running such
operations are geniuses - to the shareholders. dj Trump claimed on the
campaign trial that he too used US tax laws to avoid paying taxes, and to
some, Trump is a genius too. The idea that US capital and/or capitalist
only invest in the US is a parochial one. Canada, with just 2% of the
world’s economy, actively encourages its investors and even its govt
pension funds to invest outside Canada.

One last thing, today is the anniversary of the day Dick Nixon arrived in
China. All the US companies who invested in China after that are smiling.
Heck, even the US companies who arrived late to the party and invested
there this century are smiling too. The whole idea - like Marx said - is
the efficient use of land, labour and capital. Any other formula is, well,
a novelty - whether or not it is cocooned in a 'save our jobs' mantra.

Of course - we do need, at least, some level of Communism, in every society.

The term 'Communism' has been badly misinterpreted - not only in religious
dogma, but also in the economic domain.

Pseudo Capitalists have a tendency to make you believe that Communism in any
form is bad. If Canada is a capitalist country, why do you have below programs
in Canada?

In Canada, you have:
1. Social Assistance
2. Canada Child Tax Benefits
3. Old Age Security
4. Medicare
5. Social Housing
6. Social Services
7. Public Education and possibly many more. Are these not examples of TEXTBOOK
COMMUNISM?

In the United States we have:
1. Social Security
2. Medicare
3. Medicaid
4. Temp Assistance for Needy Families
5. Food Stamps
6. Earned Income Tax Credit
7. Housing Vouchers and many more. Why do we have these programs in the US - If
the US boasts that it is a capitalist country?

If the above programs were to be eliminated from North America by our
respective politicians, I am willing to bet $1 that their political careers
would be over.

The fact that a psuedo Globalist such as Mervyn, is able to earn a decent
salary in Canada, is because Canada enforces what is known as "Controlled
Immigration". If Canada was to suddenly open up their borders and let in people
from India and/or China on a massive scale, I am willing to bet another dollar
that Mervyn would be out of a job in a matter of days and he would be real
lucky to earn even half of what he makes today.

There are plenty of skilled people in India who would be willing to replace
Mervyn (whatever may be his skills) at a short notice, for less than half of
what he makes, right now. The only reason Mervyn is able to chirp out loud in
the frosty Canadian winter, is because Canada is protecting him - by NOT
opening up the flood gates.

Now chill down. think real hard and stop giving me the bull stories about the
generalized benefits to Globalization.

Cheers,

Jim Fernandes

[image: Dona Paula Circle Greenery Lawn Turned Into A Sleeping Lawn? – by
Stephen Dias, Dona Paula]
GSIDC in conjunction with PWD have recently modified or renovated this Dona
Paula circle and converted this area into a greenery with grass segment
vize lawn, which many of the residents felt that the roads have been shrunk
due to wrong planning design.

Our regular Dona Paula buses which were stranded earlier on the roads has
been allocated a slot and now we see them inconveniently parking and most
of them have complained that it is not an adequate site. I have also found
that while manoeuvring they have also damaged some stone barrier which were
made for the separation of this area for parking.

Now, with this new plan the public and tourists found very cosy atmosphere
and take shelter for relaxing and even sleep on these lawns. There is no
one to supervise neither look after this newly expensive lawn made by the
Government. With this facility provided by GSIDC a unsound lady has come to
take shelter and stays in one place just opposite the board of National
Institute of Oceanography near the compound wall, a premier Institute of
India.

This lady is seen there almost two months and found sleeping whole day (see
photo) in one place, and nobody bothers to help her. I was told that this
same lady was earlier seen rooming for one year in different localities and
now she found this area very cosy to relax. This is just opposite to
Outpost Police Station of Dona Paula and the main gate of NIO.

Will the concerned authorities take this lady to a safe place and if she is
unsound may be to psychiatry department of GMC for check-up and restore her
health? So many organizations are supposed to look after such cases and
provide them some help but I am surprised why she is unattended. She is
now, out of hands and it appears that nobody wants to interfere with her.

[Goanet] ostentious weddings and other celebrations

2017-02-21 Thread Nelson Lopes
OSTENTIOUS WEDDINGS AND OTHER CELBRATIONS

The BJP Govt is seriously toying with the legislation to curb ostentious
expenditures particularly on wedding celebrations. . It should be extended
to any celebrations The BJP legislator is supposed to have spent Rs 500
crores on wedding. Let Govt not use the same soap to wash all linen .The
BJP party in intrusive actions want to control and interfere with the
private lives of citizens. India is a democracy, but authoritian actions
by self righteous BJP is a cause for concern. Earlier we have seen BJP
interference with what we eat, how we dress how much our money we can
withdraw and forcing pseudo Nationalism indicating increasing sense of
intolerance on religious freedom .There are numerous ways by which
ostentious, vulgar display of wealth can be curbed, specially by the
political class with ill-gotten , unaccountable resources both before and
after elections and opulence displayed at their celebrations.

The celebrations of weddings is a personal matter of individuals and legal
curbs with aim of subsidizing weddings of poor is totally misplaced
priority. All such regulations are fertile grounds for corruption and
greasing the palms of authorities that enforce . Govt is not sanctioning
loans to celebrate weddings and the matter of expenditure is best left to
individuals who are best judges of expenditures involved .The BJP party
wants to project itself as the savior of poor and their concerns .It must
be understood that various expenditures on wedding services are quiet a
burden and various specific cesses collected are not diverted properly
towards the avowed goals. There are organizations who encourage mass
celebrations of weddings at common place to reduce the burden of expenses
and Govt has never contributed, appreciated such occasions. It is only a
matter of convenience and such movements are not popular and are limited in
society.

It is a totally objectionable premises in a democratic country to control
personal limits on wedding expenditures by the strong arm of the
administrations, The govt is touching dangerous grounds of personal
judgments on what is fair and just for individuals in their own capacity.
Permitting leverage to Govt to control our private lives is a dangerous
precedent fraught with serious consequences of personal rights , liberties
and freedom. Anyway where will be the line drawn on ostentious
celebrations? Who has complained about such expenditures for the Govt to
bring in legislation curbing personal freedom to decide? Various acts of
corruption are still not tamed by the Govt and there is no serious thought
about doing so in near future The curbing of monumental wastages in Govt
functioning should be the first priority of control instead of tinkering
with private affairs of individuals. The weddings are a moment of joyous ,
happy occasions that couples want to denote for as life long memory of
the most eventful day of their life and new beginning. Nobody is under any
obligation to imitate and resort to wasteful expenditure which they can ill
afford just to conform to societal norms of approval and acceptance. Some
communities do not serve alcohol and vegetarian dishes as part of tradition
also indirectly controlling expenses

Weddings in the west are strictly limited affair to friends and relatives
The guest have also to contribute towards expenses. Here in Goa the guest
numbers may run from 300 to 500 minimum and celebrations starts day in
advance and continue for days afterwards with customs and traditions, let
the people decide for themselves how to limit the fun, numbers and expenses
The day when numbers are controlled things will automatically fall in
place. It is only the weddings of political scions that are unwieldy and
are a pompous show of wealth funded by others on their behalf which is
abhorable. The overbearing ombudsman by way of legislation is least people
want . It is absolutely not true that couples take loans to celebrate
weddings .Both the parties contribute to share the expenses and prepare
well in advance factoring all expenses. The investment and demand by way of
jewellery, if any, can be back breaking at times, but things are changing
for better. Let not Govt be kill joy in the name of reforms to limit
expenses and extort further taxes to pay Paul by robbing Peter .In may
states The Govt makes token provision to fund expenses of poor weddings
from public resources .Hope better sense will prevail in stead of curbing
distastefully the joy of people

 CALLING NHAI

The recent lED fixtures on Nh17 is a most welcome gesture. The bright
lights illuminate the roads very well, But unfortunately much of the light
is diffused, blocked by thick foliage spreading over the breadth of the
road, The branches abutting on to the main road need immediate trimming,
Besides these falling branches pose a serious threat to vehicle owners and
constantly short circuit the electric connections The yearly half hearted
ritual before monsoons is not worthy of this formal exercise, The property
on either side of the NH17 was acquired way back in 1998, but still the
trees cause major nuisance and there is no need of formal permission from
forest department. to clear them

The speed breakers whether humps, rumblers need regular maintenance by way
of fixing sign boards on either side of speed breakers and painting them
for better visibility and avoiding accidents, but sadly AUTHORITIES that
sanction the installation rarely bother of painting, safety and nobody owns
any responsibility

After hot mixing the roads, the sides were raised considerably leading to
dangerous inclines and slopes and that has lead to dangerous accidents
fortunately not fatal so far. All attempts to make the authorities level
the slides have persistently fallen on deaf ears but with vague promises,
The inclines at end of hot mixed roads, specially the stretch of road on
NH17 from St Sebastain Chapel to Dandeavdo junction is still left
unattended and are crying for swift action

2017-02-21 Thread Roland Francis
I am not a misogynist unlike Louise Fernandes who seems to be a
misandrist-ageist, but girls in pre-marital relationships must dump their
partners if at all, on phone rather than in writing, if this article is
anything to go by.

Man marks his ex-girlfriend's apology letter and sends it back to her

A college student in Florida grades an apology letter sent to him by his
ex-girlfriend and sends it back to her with a mark.

[Goanet] Cheap Trick

2017-02-21 Thread Roland Francis
As boys we used to have a hearty laugh at the expense of the Bhaiyya selling
fruits or vegetables or kulfi door to door. The joke was the Bhaiyya used to
sometimes distribute peddas to his customers saying that a child was born to
him in his 'native place' (village). On further questioning he would add that
he had not been to his native place for over a year.
We used to rationalize it by saying the elder brother who remained to take care
of the land had to "look after" the younger brothers' wives.

It was a myth, a trick played on an innocent party and like many things we did,
we should have known better.

But for a Maharashtra Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLC) to repeat a like
slander at the cost of Indian Army personnel posted far from homes whose lives
are ready to be laid on the line for people like this rotten MLC is a big
disgrace.

Hope the BJP severely disciplines him.

M D'Mello:
Chinese works on the strategy of mass production (less durable) and mass
consumption. Main reason of their low cost is the low capital investment
and export friendly policies of the Government in China. China is buying
raw material from all across the world (has huge investment in resourceful
Africa) and selling the end product back to the world. China is the second
largest exporter in the world after Germany. It has been predicted that
China will also cross Germany in the export by the World Trade Organization
(WTO).

Response:
1. It is true that India's trade deficit with China is increasing despite
the Make in India campaign of the govt. That is because the campaign is all
empty gas. Just PR and Headlines Management. It needs holistic solutions
and vision for changes to happen. And changes do not happen overnight.
2. China has peaked and its economy is on a downside. There are many ghost
towns in China with manufacturing operations closing shop. India was the
only growing economy till Modi derailed it with his ill advised
demonetisation. This has set the country back by at least 2 years. While no
new employment has been created in 2.5 years, the unemployment has doubled
during this period.
3. While Trump may have America's best interests in mind, the way he is
going about things like a bull in a China shop, he is bound to collide
sooner than later.
4. Shutting out foreign employees or foreign products will hurt the US
more. Corporates run on profits, not sentiment. Many US companies have
transferred their registered offices to Ireland to avail of tax benefits
because tax rates in US are higher. Paying high wages to Americans will
prove costly to US corporates and will hurt their profitability. It is
possible that instead of foreign workers coming to the US, the work may be
outsourced to employees based out of their home country.

Marshall

Response:
Thanks Marshall for your comments.
There are conflicting opinions out there including Modi’s ‘demonetization’
that has just happened very recently and repercussions if any would take
time to reflect just as Trump’s presidency after 8 years of Democrat rule.
However, I believe if this ‘demonetization’ eliminates CASH payment for
turnkey projects, investments, housing, real estate, vehicles, gold, direct
deposit of most employee salaries into bank accounts etc. this could bring
in huge tax income to the government and liquidity to the banks. I was
informed the banks were facing liquidity problem and ‘demonetization’
obliged citizens to deposit their ‘cash at home’ into the banks that
replenished liquidity with the banks.
You say demonetization has set the country back by at least 2 years. But
demonetization took place just 3 months ago and have we seen any large
scale bankruptcies, factory closures or a great depression since then? The
impact should have been immediate.
2. China has peaked and its economy is on a downside. In 2013, underscoring
the growing worries over China, Tom Orlik wrote in the March 26 (2013)
issue of the Wall Street Journal: “Markets fear a slowdown in China’s
factories. They should also be concerned about possible government
instability.” This is 2017, has anything happened as speculated in 2013?
China itself is the largest consumer market in the world although its shift
away from export led growth is believed to be not working as hoped. Foreign
Companies that want to sell to the Chinese must open factories to employ
Chinese workers, share technology that allow Chinese to copy and sell
cheaper. Chinese tech companies are quickly becoming world-class and
dominating in consumer electronics. The Bank of China tightly controls the
yuan to dollar value. For example, it manages the pricing of exports to the
United States, making them a little cheaper than those produced in America.
Remember Trump saying ‘Currency manipulation by China?’
3. Trump said for US businesses thinking of moving their jobs abroad, there
will be consequences, and this may include outsourcing as well. "They will
be taxed very heavily at the US border if they want to leave." The
air-conditioning company Carrier reversed its plans to close a furnace
plant at Indiana and move to Mexico on promise that they would receive a $7
million tax incentive package (saving more than 800 American jobs) from the
state of Indiana in exchange for making a $16 million investment in the
facility. Trump is not intending to shut out foreign employees or foreign
products. He does not want cheap foreign workers to replace US citizens and
also likely provide incentive for local manufacture that will with-stand
foreign competition.
Ireland’s corporate tax rate is 12.5% that is one of the lowest in the
developed world and would still come down to 6.25% that would apply to

[Goanet] Eighth Sunday of the Year

2017-02-21 Thread Jude Botelho

Dear Friend,
If there is one common denominator for us all, it is that we are worriers!
According to a survey, the most common worries people have are: money (45%),
other people (39%), personal health (32%), exams (29%), job security (15%).
Worry ruins our health and kills us, yet we worry! Worry is an insult to God!
We are saying to God, ‘I don’t believe you are taking care of me so I have to
take over!’ Let go! Put yourself in His hands! Have a ‘surrendering’ weekend!
-Fr. Jude
Sun Ref. Eighth Sunday: ‘Do not be worried or be anxious! Trust in God!’
26-Feb-2017Isaiah 49: 14-15;          1 Cor. 4: 1-5;          Matt. 6: 24-34;

During the exile the Israelites felt abandoned by God. It was then that the
Prophet Isaiah reminded them that God loved them with an unconditional love and
He could not stop loving them. He compares God’s love to that of a mother for
her child. Can a woman forget her nursing child? Even if she can, God cannot
and will not forget us.

You do the worrying for me!Two business executives met for lunch. Gene asks Ed:
“How’s your health?” Ed said, “I feel great! My ulcers are gone. I feel great!”
Gene says, “How did that happen?” Ed said, “Well, you know my doctor told me my
ulcers were caused by worrying. So, I hired myself a professional worrier.
Whenever something worrisome comes up, I turn it over to him, and he does all
the worrying for me!” Gene says, “Wow, I’d like to hire someone like that! How
much does he charge?” Ed says “One hundred thousand dollars!” Gene asked, “How
in the world can you afford $100,000?” Ed says, “I don’t know. I let him worry
about that!”John Pichappilly in ‘The Table of the Word’
Today’s gospel invites us to trust in God because God alone takes care of us.
If God takes care of the birds of the air and the lilies in the field, he
surely will take care of us. Our worries and preoccupations are predominantly
about material things. We worry about what we will eat and what we will drink.
We worry about our health. We worry about our future. Anxiety and worry are an
insult to God. We do not believe that God is taking care of us and our every
need and so we are anxious about these transient things. Jesus warns us: You
cannot serve two masters.” Consequently, not money, but God alone must be the
centre of my life. When Jesus says, “Do not worry about tomorrow” he is not
condemning human resourcefulness. We have to plan for tomorrow. What he is
condemning is the fretting and worrying that keeps us from lifting up our gaze
beyond material values and the cares of this world. We are in constant danger
of becoming immersed in the values of this world and of becoming enslaved to
material things. Jesus reminds us that we are God’s precious children, and that
only in God can we find security. We must put our future in the hands of God
and pray only for the modest needs of today. Jesus invites us to set our hearts
on the kingdom of God first, and on his righteousness, and all these other
things will be given to you. Yet we worry about so many things! But worry is
not caused only by external circumstances but also by our internal
dispossession. Worry kills. Worry is banished when we place our trust in God,
when we place ourselves in the loving hands of our caring Father.
Compulsive worriersThere was a town in which the people were terrible worriers.
They called a meeting to see what they could do about the problem of worry. One
person suggested that the town should have a park where people could relax. A
second suggested that it should have a golf course. A third suggested that it
should have a cinema. And so it went on. Finally a man got up and said, “I just
thought of a much simpler solution. Why don’t we ask David, the town cobbler to
do our worrying for us.” “Wait a minute,” said David. “Why pick on me?”
“Because if you agree, we’ll make it worth your while. We’ll pay you $500 a
week.” “Well in that case, why not me?” David exclaimed. Everybody agreed that
the idea was a good one. However, just as the motion was about to be put to the
vote, this fellow got up and said, “Wait a minute! If David earned $500 a week,
what would he have to worry about?” A good question. But since he was a worrier
just like the rest of them, I’m sure he would have found something. Worriers
always do.Flor McCarthy in ‘New Sunday & Holy Day Liturgies’
Can a mother forget her child?A poor woman in a Dublin parish had a son who was
ruining her life. He wouldn’t work. He spent his time drinking and hanging
around with troublemakers. He robbed everything she had of value in the house.
Again and again she pleaded with him to change his life, but he refused to do
so. He broke her heart and made her life a misery. Eventually he ended up in
prison. Surely now she would leave him to his fate? Not at all. She visited him
without fail every week, carrying cigarettes and other things to him in a
little carrier bag. One day one of the
