was the right place for the Saint's feast Celebration here at Old Sancoale
Church facade.  Also read Letter of Bondage English, Konkani.  Also Novena and
Feast Mass schedule etc

GL responds:
Thanks Joe for posting the video and bringing this controversy to our attention.
IF solving this controversy involves a financial cost, can Goa Sudharop and the
St. Joseph Vaz Institute in San Francisco along with Goans in America and
Canada and rest of the diaspora help solve the problem?

[Goanet] Lamenting the state of Goa

From: Bernice Pereira Subject: [Goanet] Lamenting the state of Goa

Government all set to convert coconut groves into settlement zones

While reacting to the media statement by Goa Forward Party minister Vijai
Sardesai that the State will import Coconuts from Sri Lanka to ease the soaring
prices of the commodity smacks of a bigger conspiracy to convert entire Coconut
Groves into settlement areas under proposed Regional Plan.
It will not be right on the part of the citizens to expect any pro-people stand
from the current U turn & corrupt government which is fully cobbled on the
one-point agenda to plunder the State and its rich resources.

GL responds:
It appears right now Goa has a significant shortage of coconuts and the
commodity price of the fruit is soaring.  The government does not plant coconut
groves.  It is the people on their own property that do so.
So instead of the usual "blame the government" why do not forward minded
Goenkars, each undertake to plant five to ten coconut trees on their land; and
persuade ten other families to do so.
Pronto the shortage will be solved over the next few years.  This act of
planting will also encourage Goans to make their land more productive and they
will not be tempted to sell their land to developers offering some tempting
prices to guess what - build hoes or plant coconut trees.
Goa does not need a minster of Agriculture to persuade or plant coconut trees
on ones own land.  The solution to the problem is in Goan-own hands and one
will solve multiple problems including having a better standard of living.

[Goanet] Who will judge the judges

2018-01-12 Thread Nelson Lopes
Who will judge the judges

In an unprecedented move, 4 judges of the S.C have held a press conference
and gone public, The issues raised are serious in nature, medical council
of India Case, allocation of cases to select benches, equitable
distribution, streamlining functioning of Collegium, appointment of
Judges. In fact at the press conference the former CJI was in tears due
delay of justice due to lack of appointments. Judges have opined that
democracy is in peril under present circumstances. They have stressed that
the case of death of judge Loya should have been allocated to a senior
judge and the outcome could have been different .There is insinuation that
one senior politician was discharged, bias, and political interference
is not ruled out., The Family of Judge Loya is suspecting foul play and
they need to be assured of a fair probe. The 7 page letter written by
credible 4 judges, in line for promotion have had no response for 2 months
and hence cannot be accused of recourse to in house remedy. These
allegations against CJI is described as mutiny, split at the top, But
judges are on record for speaking for themselves, discharging debt to the
nation and have not accused, leveled charges against anyone in particular,
stating further that the administration is not in order and democracy is
in peril under present circumstances. The judges have been bold and
forthright in their utterances. The anguish of senior judges is
understandable on the need to address grave issues to be transparent,
reasonable, systematic and convey to general public that justice seem to
have been done specially in high profile cases, because in many legal cases
less than desirable outcomes have happened.

It is a question of modality though undesirable to go public, but
extraordinary circumstances demand extraordinary response. These issues
raised are serious that merit , in-depth introspection. It may have
different connotation in public perception and shaken their faith, respect
in judiciary. Internal rumblings have come to fore like never before thus
damaging credibility perhaps. There are certainly no violations of priority
in going to people’s court for solution for loss in temple of justice.
Congress wants SIT to probe Loyas mysterious death is a just demand bereft
of political mileage., BJP dismisses it as internal matter of Judiciary,
hoping it will be resolved soon. Govt. at all times have indirectly tried
to interfere indirectly to suit their personal interests, and BJP is no
different The CJI has not spoken to the press to clarify his stand if any,
as yet.

There is a coordinated effort to run down the move of going public,
instead of capitalizing the issues raised therein and scrutinizing
dispassionately for the good of the Nation, akin to chasing the shadow
instead of concentrating on the substantive points, The debate must address
the pints raised instead of gunning for the judges for their bold stand

[Goanet] Shift animals from the garbage treatment plant, urge Bicholim residents

2018-01-12 Thread samir umarye
BY SAMIR UMARYE
BICHOLIM: Alert residents of Bicholim have voiced their concern over the
irregular handling of garbage from the garbage treatment plant and have asked
the authorities to shift the cattle from the site.

It may be stated that the Bicholim garbage treatment plant at Lakherem was
inaugurated in 2009 by the then urban development minister, Joaquim Alemao and
North Goa MP, Shripad Naik. Since then it has been carrying out its work in a
proper manner.

Some years ago there were some issues regarding the wall that was broken and
all the cattle were entering the site. But this wall was later repaired after
media highlighted the issue.

Last week when Herald visited the site they were in for a rude shock when it
was seen that the garbage was on fire while several cattle were grazing in the
garbage treatment plant. Inquiries revealed that such incidents are common at
the site and mostly go unreported.

“We have seen smoke coming out of the garbage treatment plant several times
during the evening but never objected to it and prefer to ignore the same”, a
resident of Lakherem said.

Even as the residents do not find much difference in this some of the
environmentalists and animal lovers feel that BMC should immediately stop
burning the garbage at the site.

“Burning of garbage and plastic at the garbage treatment site is totally banned
and is not the right way to treat the garbage. It only leads to pollution and
would affect the residents of the area in the long run,” said Animal Rescue
Squad chief, Amrut Singh.

Along with the garbage treatment plant the BMC has also made arrangements for
keeping seized stray cattle.

“The cattle are also seen grazing at the site which is again a problem for
those animals. We feel that the cow shed should be shifted from the garbage
treatment site to some other place or the BMC should give these animals to some
gaushala and pay for their fodder. The animals could also get hurt if they fall
in the fire and get burnt.” Amrut Singh added.

When contacted the BMC Chairman, Satish Gaonkar said they do not burn the
garbage at the plant. “Last week’s incident was the lone incident and the
labourers had done it. They had put fire to the dry leaves but when we realised
it we asked them to put it off,” Gaonkar said.

He said that they have made a cow shed at the site and sometimes they let the
animals loose. “On the front side of the plant there is a cow shed and we have
proposal to build another one at the same place. Budget provision is also made
for the same and we will employ locals to look after the cattle,” Gaonkar said.

“We provide the cattle with fodder and water so there is no question of they
eating the garbage. This year we will improve the facilities given to the
cattle at the site,” Gaonkar added.

*Vincy Quadros felicitated at the 31st Conference of All India Konkani
Parishad*

Mumbai: ‘Goa is the only state in India with Konkani as its state language.
It is indeed a joy to see the work done for the development of Konkani. In
all their plans and policies towards the language, the Goa government
should keep in mind the Konknni speaking people living outside Goa’. This
was explicitly articulated during the presidential address at the 31st
Conference of All India Konknni Porixod. At the conference, the Sahitya
Akademi Bal Puroskar awardee, Mr. Vincy Quadros, was also felicitated.

The two day conference was held on January 6 and 7, 2018 at Scouts and
Guides Hall at Dadar, Mumbai. Grace Pinto, Managing Director of Ryan
Foundations was the chief guest at the function. The film actress, Varsha
Usgaonkar was the guest of honour. The president of the Parishad, Gokuldas
Prabhu, the key note speaker, Payannur Ramesh Pai, Walter D' Souza and the
other guests were also present on the dais.

While Grace Pinto called to support each other in all the endeavours,
Varsha Usgaonkar requested the Parishad to reach out to the students,
artists and the writers. Most of the speakers stressed that all should work
towards unifying the Konknni speaking people. Goans living in Mumbai
conveyed their love and heaped praises on Goa and Goans.

Vincy Quadros, recent awardee of the Sahitya Akademi’s Bal Sahitya Puraskar
was felicitated on the occasion. Quadros has also won the awards from Goa
Konknni Akademi, Thomas Stephens Konknni Kendr, Konknni Bhasha Mandal,

[Goanet] Lamenting the state of Goa

2018-01-12 Thread Bernice Pereira
Government all set to convert coconut groves into settlement zones

While reacting to the media statement by Goa Forward Party minister Vijai
Sardesai that the State will import Coconuts from Sri Lanka to ease the soaring
prices of the commodity smacks of a bigger conspiracy to convert entire Coconut
Groves into settlement areas under proposed Regional Plan. Earlier On Tuesday,
9th Girish CHODANKAR had criticised rising prices of coconut and vegetables in
Goa and had blamed Vijay Sardessai for neglecting Agricultural portfolio and
focusing only on TCP and on same day Sardessai had made above statement.

Chodankar said Sardesai and his mentor Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar are all
set to convert vast tracts of beautiful land in Goa under proposed Regional
Plan and extended PDAs. They will not spare even the Coconut Groves due to
which the future-scarcity of Coconuts is staring at Goa. They are prepared to
destroy Goa and this government is ready by making Three Chief Town Planners
and introducing NOC for selling land. He said evil design to sell Goa is ready.

It is condemnable that State government, instead of promoting the agriculture,
is looking at importing Coconut. This is also in a stark contradiction to the
melodrama played by Goa Forward Party in the State Legislative Assembly of
announcing Coconut Tree as State Tree.

It’s a mockery that we will have to import fruits of the State tree from the
foreign country. Rather than giving fancy identity as State Tree for Coconut,
State government should have worked out ways and means to protect and promote
the trees.

"The government which pledges and declares coconut tree as State tree and goes
for import of coconuts is a cruel joke of Goemkarponn and coconut tree which is
regarded as Goa's natural richness and identity" chodankar lamented.

It will not be right on the part of the citizens to expect any pro-people stand
from the current U turn & corrupt government which is fully cobbled on the
one-point agenda to plunder the State and its rich resources.
