[Goanet] Bible verse for the Day

2020-05-05 Thread Devak Argham
John 12:44-47
==

44 Jesus cried out and said, “Whoever believes in me believes not only in
me but also in the one who sent me,

45 and whoever sees me sees the one who sent me.

46 I came into the world as light, so that everyone who believes in me
might not remain in darkness.

47 And if anyone hears my words and does not observe them, I do not condemn
him, for I did not come to condemn the world but to save the world.

[Goanet] Alfonso Albuquerque of Porvorim

2020-05-05 Thread BT Yahoo Mail

Hi Dom,
I was moved by your courage to casually disclose that your dad started
as a coolie working at the Bombay docks and rose to be Chief Petty
Officer. That example is bound to have shaped your own values.
The little I got to know about you came from Alfonso Albuquerque, not
the conqueror, but an unusual guy who lived in Porvorim, on the main
road opposite Bank of India branch in the 1970-80s. Allow me to say
something about him.
Born in 1911, he was one of a large, well known Goan family, now mostly
scattered in Canada.
Alfonso went to London to study law in 1933 and travelled to Germany in
1936. There at a ball in Berlin, he met a blond German beauty, Ursula by
name, then aged 20. He danced with her the whole night. Ursula thought
him one of the handsomest men she had seen but frankly Alfonso was quite
dark-complexioned. Next day, the two were swimming at a local lake and
soon the courtship was on. It was the time when Hitler's Aryan ideology
and anti-Jewish views are reaching their peak.
Ursula had agreed to marry Alfonso and booked her passage to Bombay. She
arrived there in June 1939 when UK declared war on Germany.
The couple lived mostly on the outskirts of Mombasa. Alfonso switched
from law to chicken farming. Meanwhile tensions were brewing and the
children, Klaus and Claudia, left for the US on overseas study, followed
by their mother.

Soon Alfonso was on his own and he took the path of spiritual
liberation. His guru was UG Krishnamurti and under his teachings, he
appeared to have undergone a radical transformation in Porvorim, leading
him to do away with much of his worldly goods and live like an ascetic.
Meanwhile, his son had become a Professor of Sociology at Charleston
College, South Carolina.

To return to you, its was Alfonso who spoke warmly about you and your
artistic talents. But I don't recall much.
The point of this email is to ask you to fill us in on what you have
been doing in the USA.

I wonder how many Goanetters or their forefathers were taken by the
brits as coolies or indentured labour to East Africa?

BC
Soon after Portuguese conquered Goa, it became the main port to trade
slaves brought from Portuguese enclave from Africa.? The slaves were
shipped from Goa to Ceylon and as far away to Macao.? The Mhamai Kamats
(whose ancestral house is just behind Governor's residence in Panjim)
were one of the main slave traders in Goa.?

[Goanet] The Post Modern Juke-Box

2020-05-05 Thread Roland Francis
PMJ is a rotating musical collective that takes modern music and turns it into
vintage swing and jazz.

Musical Collective is a term that describes a group of musicians in which
membership is flexible and creative control shared. It is distinct from that of
a traditional band.

Goans in Bombay had their own ‘musical collectives’ the most well known of
which were the Dhobitalao groups that gathered at Alfred Restaurant and were on
short notice for weddings and other celebrations. I have written about them in
my Aunties of Dhobitalao article and they were also featured in Bardroy
Barreto’s Nachom Ya Kumpasar (Dance On The Rhythm) recent movie.

Careless Whisper is a 1984 pop ballad composed by George Michael and Andrew
Ridgeley. This PMJ video cover has got 27 million views testifying to the
popularity of the song, Robyn Adele Anderson’s superb vocals and
Grammy-nominated saxophonist Dave Koz’s blowing.

Towards the end of the nineteenth century, the British empire
builders wanted to exploit the rich Kenya Highlands region by
constructing a railway line from Mombasa to Nairobi. The building
of the railway line was entrusted to British Railway engineers
who had vast experience in connecting various cities to each
other in India.
They wanted experienced railway construction workers and they
found them in northern India . These workers were shipped
from Karachi port serving the then northern India to Mombasa.
These type of workers could not possibly come from Goa as
they had little experience with permanent way construction work

[Goanet] GOA GOVERNMENT BREACHING THE LAW

2020-05-05 Thread Aires Rodrigues
The use of our national flag is regulated by the Emblems and Names
(Prevention of Improper Use) Act, 1950, the Prevention of Insults to
National Honour Act, 1971 and the Flag Code of India 2002.

On the explicit and bizarre directions of the then very ailing Chief
Minister Manohar Parrikar, a huge national flag was hoisted on a very high
pole erected at the Panaji end of the third Mandovi Bridge, just before its
inauguration in January last year.

Infact as the national flag is hoisted only at vital government
institutions, that skewed thought of the very hoisting on the road side of
the bridge was making a mockery of the sanctity and solemnity of our very
revered national flag.

Besides the national flag can be only hoisted from sunrise to sunset and
must be lowered every evening which is not being done in this case. The
construction and inauguration of the bridge was hastily carried out with
all its flaws. Sadly, the reverential treatment of our flag especially the
lowering of it and respect for the law was not part of that haste. The
authorities are clearly and blatantly high-handedly acting contrary to the
law.

Nobody is above the law and nobody should misuse or insult our National
flag which is much more than cloth and ink. It is a national symbol of our
unity, liberty and freedom and must therefore be strictly respected and
treated with reverence in accordance with the law. It is only by rigorously
observing the relevant laws and regulations, that the dignity and honour of
our Flag can be maintained.

Nothing can be expected from Pramod Sawant the current Chief Minister who
even within his cabinet is better known as Mr. Property Sawant. But the
Chief Secretary Parimal Rai and Acting DGP Jaspal Singh cannot be mere
spectators to the Rule of law being reduced to an Ass!

Specially if the orange juice came from the orchards of Jaffa in the

By sixteenth century the Jewish (Shephardic) had spread far and wide
including Goa, Ormuz and Malacca In Goa, they were perceived as a
threat and the Portuguese complained to Lisbon about "gente de nacao"
or "homens do nacao" a term referred in europe as "men of nations"

Much changed with the arrival of of 1st Marquis de Pombal when he

I am very much illuminated and enlightened by your version of history,
At the risk of boring readers please allow me to state as follows;

Palacio de Hildacao,or Adil Shah' Palace (or the Secretariat as you prefer
to call it) was the residence of Portuguese Governor/Viceroy. It is
recorded in history books that the Governor used to use back door to visit
Mhamai Kamat.

Sometime in 1843 or so and soon after the plague devastated the city of
goa(Cidade de Goa), the capital was moved to Panjim and was called "Nova
Goa".

Abhar,
Voznadik Vojem

---

The Governor's residence is at Raj
Bhawan in Dona Paula. The Mhamai Kamats have lived for centuries behind
Adil Shah's Palace, the former Secretariat of Goa, post December 1961.

And Cidade de Goa was another name for Panjim. Old Goa is Velha Goa, not to
be confused with Goa Velha another village.
