[Goanet] Dance Me to the End of Love - Leonard Cohen (Basia Bulat cover)

2020-05-15 Thread Roland Francis
If there should be a cover for Leonard Cohen’s ‘Dance Me...’ it is fitting that
36 year old Canadian folk singer songwriter Barbara Josephine (Basia) Bulat of
London Ontario should do the honours.

Of Polish origin, Basia is known for playing the autoharp. Growing up in
Toronto, her mother was a music teacher for piano and guitar and the radio at
home was permanently tuned to an oldies channel. That I am sure, helped develop
her retro style.

[Goanet] The Global Recovery

2020-05-15 Thread Roland Francis
With so much at stake, economists, bankers, money managers and Govt decision
makers are probably having sleepless nights about how the recovery will take
place.

Will it be a V, U or W recovery? Early Chinese data suggests it won’t be a V
which is what everybody would like. Now, they are resigned to a U, question
being how long the distance of the baseline before it goes upward. They’ll get
nightmares if the recovery gets to a W.

What’s at stake are empty treasuries, tons of jobs, looming tax increases and
any other scenarios that may make the actual virus seem like Kadio Bodios at
the Bandra Feast.

For the Goa Govt, no way to remove the employment fat from the fire. The
Persian Gulf - thumbs down, Cruise Ships two thumbs down and mining exports -
the whole hand down.

[Goanet] PM MODI's SPEECHES AND BROKEN PROMISES ARE RECYCLED HOT AIR

2020-05-15 Thread Aires Rodrigues
There is rightly a sense of disbelief and a trust deficit with those in
Power. At that 2014 election rally at Merces in Goa after promising ‘Acche
din’ Narendra Modi gave us an assurance and vowed that money stashed away
in Swiss banks would be brought back and 15 lakhs would be credited into
everyone’s bank account. Obviously, a forlorn hope and disappointment for
the many and a broken promise by a PM who knew full well that he had no
intention of keeping or capable of honouring. I have stopped listening to
any of his blabbering as it always leads to disappointment and frustration.
It is always hot air and much ado about nothing.

However, when it was announced at short notice that the Prime Minister was
going to address the nation on 12th May at 8 pm at the height of a grave
and worrying pandemic, I chose to be glued to listen to what he had to say
with a hope that he had finally found something worthwhile to communicate.

After half an hour into his discourse, I could not figure out what the hell
he wished to communicate. As it was a damp squib, a much ado about nothing,
I decided to hit the pillow after hearing that he was planning a 20 lakh
crore cash stimulus to prop up a failing economy, without revealing the
source of that money. It all sounded a repeat of his 2014 election stunt at
Merces.

India’s limp along Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, has long lost
the plot and needs to be replaced by someone who can think out of the box
with vision, economic policies and correctly targeted investment with full
transparency and zero tolerance to corruption. This is vital and urgently
required to chart India’s road to financial recovery especially in view of
the current COVID-19 raging pandemic.

But there is no hope whatsoever that our polity and political turf will
ever improve. It is only further deteriorating and awfully decaying by the
day. The unacceptable antics and behavior of some of our politicians in
recent times has turned it into a despised profession and looked upon with
disdain and held in low esteem by the very people that they are meant to
serve.

William Hazlitt a great essayist and English philosopher, observed that
‘’some persons make promises for the pleasure of breaking them’’. PM Modi’s
track record perfectly fits this description. John D. Rockefeller, the
powerful business magnate and philanthropist believed in the sacredness of
a promise, that a man’s word should be as good as his bond, that character-
not wealth or power or position- is of supreme worth.

Some years ago, Supreme Court Judges B.N.Agarwal and G.S.Singhvi had
observed that even God cannot save our country from such politicians. Amen

[Goanet] The Return Of Indenture (Vivek Menezes)

2020-05-15 Thread Roland Francis
A very eye opening history lesson on the biggest injustice perpetrated on the
poor and vulnerable of India, by the British, the Indians, in fact everybody
who avails of cheap labour using human beings as an expendable, unrewarded
robotic commodity.

Only when I came to Canada and breathed the air of human dignity did I rue the
days when my family and others like them, took advantage of this cheap labour,
to bring up children, maintain houses, use as personal support workers for
older people and every other human activity that became indignity when not paid
and respected adequately.

Just like the tea plantation owners of West Bengal, and the British who showed
the way, Goans and every other prospering middle class family unit did what
they did on the backs of those quiet women and men for whom their daily meal
meant the be all and end all of their life’s aspirations. We didn’t know their
spouses names or that of their children. We pretended not to be involved in the
sicknesses they had to bear and the monetary worries that burdened them when
the expenses of a wedding or a death clouded the little happiness, if you can
call it that, of their humdrum existence.

I have experienced the scar on the souls of that indenture on my Caribbean
friends in Toronto from the Indian families of Guyana and Trinidad, St Vincent
and Grenada, generations after it has happened. It is expressed in the sadness
of their memories when they reminisce about their grandfathers and grandmothers
who came on crowded ships and trains from the villages of Bihar and UP,
promised a better life. That better life meant stooping in back breaking work
in sugar cane plantations and railway tracks and building roads that went
through poisonous marshes to connect ports to towns.

But generations down the road, they did indeed get a better life. In the fact
that they got equality and political clout in the West Indies, that they got
the means to emigrate to England, Canada and the US for an even better life. A
life their grandparents would have smiled on if they knew that all their labour
and hardship paid off for their grandchildren.

Will it ever pay off for the poor millions of them in India?

Roland.

[Goanet] Return of Indenture (The Caravan, 15/5/2020)

2020-05-15 Thread V M
https://caravanmagazine.in/commentary/coronavirus-lockdown-return-of-indentured-bonded-labour-indian-industry

On 2 May, my home state of Goa opened registration for migrants stranded by
the nationwide lockdown, who wanted to cross state borders and return to
their families. Huge numbers lined up immediately. Less than forty-eight
hours later, on the morning of 4 May, the chief minister Pramod Sawant made
a startling announcement that 71,000 people had already registered for
evacuation, with many more expected to follow suit. That same evening,
Manoj Caculo, the chairman and managing director of a family conglomerate
spanning the automobile, hospitality, and real-estate businesses, wrote on
his Facebook page, “This so called migrant travel is going to screw Goan
Industry...They availed all our benefits and want to leave when we need to
start work? Can understand some…but mass exodus??? Bad for Goan
economy!”

The Caculo Group is front and centre in Goa’s commercial sphere—the only
mall in the capital city, Panjim, carries the Caculo name. In May last
year, Manoj Caculo was elected as president of the storied, 111-year-old
Goa Chamber of Commerce and Industry, whose permanent members constitute an
impressive roll-call of the state’s longstanding commercial stakeholders.

The day after his Facebook post, Caculo sent a letter to the chief
minister, in his official role as the GCCI president, which complained, “It
has been brought to our notice that many of these migrant workers were
provided with shelter and food and wages during the entire period of
lockdown and they were not really stranded in the true sense of the word.”
It continued, “However, now that they are getting a free ride to their home
states, many of these workers have left their employers high and dry and
are making their way to their home states.”

Caculo further argued that “unchecked migration will have an adverse impact
on some of the local industries, construction sector and agriculture.” His
conclusion was, “We feel that the Government should put in place some
screening/counselling process and see if those who are having jobs can be
convinced to stay back. Our fear is that if they go now, it will take a
long time for them or others to return and this will affect the working of
many sectors as mentioned above.”

None of these sentiments are unique to Goa’s industrialists. Many of their
counterparts across the country reacted in the same manner to the massive,
ongoing exodus of distressed workers fleeing unsafe living and working
conditions, since Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the lockdown to
combat the novel coronavirus pandemic. On 6 May, Karnataka summarily
cancelled evacuation trains after the chief minister BS Yediyurappa met
with big players from the construction lobby—rail services resumed after a
countrywide outcry. Two days later, Odisha, the home state of millions of
migrant workers, imposed an onerous, and most likely unconstitutional,
COVID-19 testing requirement—only migrants who tested negative would be
allowed back into the state. The move was seemingly calculated to dissuade
its citizens from returning home.

Meanwhile, the Bharatiya Janata Party-led state governments in both Uttar
Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh have moved to abolish almost every important
legal protection for workers established since Independence. This included
the crucial Minimum Wages Act of 1948 and its corollaries, which control
the framework of payments, such as guaranteed overtime, and apportioning of
humane work hours.

But even that is not enough for the Confederation of Indian Industry, or
CII. On 8 May, when its representatives met with Santosh Kumar Gangwar, the
minister of state for labour and environment, the apex council of India’s
commercial interests demanded his ministry “direct workers to join back at
their workplace.” In case workers refuse, the CII said, “they should be
liable for action under the Employment Standing Order Act and Industrial
Dispute Act.” In addition, they wanted “migrant workers residing in shelter
homes or available locally near the industrial belts to be mapped and
deployed to the nearest factories.”

The intent of all these industrialists is crystal clear. Their interests
and concerns, portrayed as benefitting the nation, have been built on the
much-vaunted demographic dividend of hundreds of millions of under-skilled,
highly interchangeable, hungry and pliable Indian workers. This has been
the lopsided supply side of the equation all through India’s
post-liberalisation growth story. But all that has dwindled to nought in
the coronavirus emergency, as the great mass of India’s workforce has
accurately assessed that they will be the ones who will wind up paying the
ultimate price for restarting the economy. They want to go home instead.

As they decamp almost en masse, the stark, unforgiving language deployed in
response by the Indian industry unmistakably echoed the worst excesses of
what economists call *c

Re: [Goanet] Happy Birthday Venantius

2020-05-15 Thread Venantius J Pinto
Roland,

Thank you, but other than what I see, the artist Bohemian but very little
of the pointers apply to me. Yet it is all nostalgic. But I genuinely
appreciate your kindness. Very few people know about it, but it got leaked
year last year. Its just that when you inquired about me I was steered to
saying in response: Overall good. Today, I have come a year closer to 60.
Hoping that I get a chance to go to work, all things considered of
course. The operative marker was the 60, and heck, no regrets! I am really
a laborer, an artistic laborer who engages with thoughts at intersection of
three vast areas, and could not be more happy at that grace.

Basically a basket case and a good one (basket and case) or so I believe;
biding my time without any anger (finally, final). I may start painting in
oils (have done so decades ago), and feel there will be enough time 'fore I
meet the worms. No lead up will be necessary. Meaning, I would not have to
do 50-100 painting to get feel I am ready. :) And that is not being
arrogant. We are all built differently.

What some have seen are my illustrations, more recently, over the past year
for Philosophy Now, UK. I am at the point where I wanted to be, but was
unable to on account of my uncertainties, which have thankfully dissipated
now. And there was no angst. I never wanted even a dot of mine to come from
any angst-ridden corner. And I must mention that I am proud that so it has
transpired.

I am thankful not to have been trained as a painter; and am not being
cocky. Illustratively, I do not work in one style but regard the text very
conscientiously. Even as I skirt the edges of painting, I will not sell
myself short. I respect opinions, but also as we say in Konkani: Tel lait
gele! And respectfully that is the least I can gift myself being someone
who has entirely picked up certain areas and brought other influences as
also skills into my usual work. Well, slowly forging. No worries if I am
called to give up the ghost. I have to stay on the path I chose, and move
accordingly, as I feel we all should to keep going.
