Girls outshine boys

In recent times Girls outsmart boys all over India in Board and
University and competitive examinations. Most toppers are girls and their
passing percentage too is better. It is not mere women`s liberation alone
but independence, determination to cross traditional barriers. The upward ,
vertical mobility is guaranteed by Education alone, which assures a better
life, free from routine and drudgery. Women are today employed , have
invaded male reserves and are leading in all fields of employment and
fiercely competing with men. Girls are a real challenge to the egoistic
attitude of manly superiority. They are no more confined to homes to rear
children and be content as housewives. They seek economic independence too
and say in their life . Men too prefer working partners and share home
chores. The reservations for male preserve in employment are breaking down
in favor of women employees. except for maternity leave constraints ,
which is also being attended to by maternity, paternity leave and
crches. The parents no longer hinder and deprive girls of education .Even in
the military, professional fields women have openings on merit .Men no
doubt may not take lightly women in position, but have to be content with
reality and swallow their pride. Girls are more devoted to studies and are
obedient to suggestions and guidance and are focused, Girls are less
distracted with social life , fun and entertainment. The fashion
consciousness too is subdued to concentrate on studies .Govt are providing
free education to girls up to University levels and are providing
facilities and incentives to attract and maintain them in Educational
Institutes. It is found that educated girls voluntarily encourage family
planning, together with legal provisions .The ban on dowry ,sex
determination tests, abortions , child marriages and right of inheritance
by girls are forward legislations in the emancipation of girl child

The early marriages, were intended for the protection of dignity of girl as
husband would guarantee that safety .Education too was discouraged as
interaction with society would not ensure safety, Society today is
changing, evolving and showing greater respect, responsibility toward
opposite sex

Today an educated girl is not only an economical asset to the family but
educational, health benefits that accrue to her family and her mental and
physical health The parents have realized that expenses on girls education
is a good investment in future There is proliferation of Girls educational
Institutes at all levels

[Goanet] Sputnik V vaccine

2020-08-14 Thread Nelson Lopes
SPUTNIK –V COVID VACCINE

The Russian are the first to announce the covid vaccine and that
does not give them any advantage. Or superiority. The number of covid
infected Russians are ‘high . The cry that Russians experimental data is
skimpy and not in public domain is a legitimate concern. .They are not in
the race, competing with any Nation like in space. The name of the
vaccine is being misinterpreted as being suggestive . They are the first to
announce and to that extend deserve recognition and appreciation instead of
criticism.’ They are not in business to sell their vaccine or are
advertising for trade inquiries. Besides mass productions, costs,
distribution, priority are still to be surmounted .It is left entirely to
the Nations to protect their citizens by using any vaccine available, if
they deem fit. Primarily Russian vaccine is meant for their own citizens
and is being tested on Putin`s daughter to express confidence and she is
not a guinea pig to be experimented with .That will be too high a price to
be paid for mere propaganda .The usual successful vaccine in the past
has taken years. It is expected that presently it will take at least 18
months, if not five years to make it available, after the prescribed
stages on mass human trials. The animal phase has been expedited because of
its highly contagious. nature and mortality. Third phase is believed cannot
be shortened for any reasons as per procedures laid down. Even after
successful analysis, results in the past have been disputable regarding
efficacy and side effects. We know that many approved drugs to day are
banned because of ill effects discovered after long use. We must not forget
in to-days times development of technologies are evolving rapidly and it is
possible to expedite studies and outcomes

There are about 130 vaccines in developmental stages and 3 have reached
human trials, Even India is in the race to develop its own and has
partnered, financed production and distribution. Prominent firms are
Astra Zeneca, Moderna, Pfizer Sinovac,Carsino, Sino Pharma etc. People are
still anxious and apprehensive about vaccines, doses, cost and after
effects but deaths and furious spread are more worrisome. As the repurposed
drugs are too expensive, in short supply and are not guaranteed cure No
one is forcing the use of vaccine, the choice is voluntary, even though
Govts. may subsidies vaccine

The greatest hope against Covid 19 is vaccine and people are eagerly
looking forward to the scientist to deliver fast to save life , economy.
The National boundaries are not subject matter of race, but to save mankind
against this scourge

History in the making in American politics, as Joe Biden – the Democrat
favoured to win this year’s Presidential election – selected Kamala Harris as
his running mate.

Their combination sparks instant electricity and drew an immediate global
spotlight, quite like what Biden experienced as Vice President under Barack
Obama. One reason is sheer stakes: the world knows it cannot afford another
four devastatingly incompetent years of Donald Trump.

But it’s also Harris, who she is and what she stands for. The daughter of
immigrants from Jamaica and India, she maintains (and proudly communicates)
strong ties to both countries of her parents. Also, via the USA’s unscientific
and infuriating, yet inescapable, “racial” calculus, she’s the first “woman of
colour” major party candidate for that country’s highest offices.

All this assumes huge significance because Biden is 77, and has reportedly
already told his aides he will only serve one term.

That means, in the way American politics lines itself up, a part-Hindu,
part-Christian (she’s married to a Jewish man), “Black” Jamaican-Caribbean
Tamilian Brahmin Californian-American woman now has the inside track to the
“most powerful office in the world.”

Wild? Not when you consider that Harris comes from two of the most successful
immigrant communities in American - and indeed world - history.

There are 3 million Jamaicans in Jamaica, but almost the equivalent number
lives in diaspora (over a million in the US alone). Sons and daughters of the
island have always been in the vanguard of the civil rights movement, from
Marcus Garvey to Harry Belafonte. It’s important to remember that, just two
decades ago, Colin Powell was the most popular political figure in America,
though he declined to run for President (his wife feared he’d be assassinated).

Donald Harris, the father of Kamala and her younger sister Maya, was divorced
from Shyamala Gopalan when their daughters were young. Yet, this Stanford
economic professor (he is a rare Marxist in the highest levels of US academe)
often took his daughters to visit his family, he writes, to “memba whe yu cum
fram."

In an essay entitled Reflections of a Jamaican Father, Harris writes, “my
message to them, from the lessons I had learned along the way, was that the sky
is the limit on what one can achieve with effort and determination and that, in
this process, it is important not to lose sight of those who get left behind by
social neglect or abuse and lack of access to resources or ‘privilege’; also
not to get ‘swell-headed’ and that it is important to ‘give back’ with service
to some greater cause than oneself.”

Those “home truths” were considerably reinforced by Kamala and her sister’s
evidently remarkable mother Shyamalan Gopalan, and her family.

Since the nomination of Harris earlier this week, some reactions have revelled
in vulgar triumphalism because her mother was an Iyer Tamilian Brahmin (a set
of sub-castes short-handed as Tam-Brahms). And it is a fact this relatively
minuscule community has accumulated vastly disproportionate achievements,
including three Nobel Prize winners and a World Chess Champion.

But the actions of the Gopalans embody the rejection of caste orthodoxy.
Shyamalan Gopalan was unquestioningly supported when she chose to study in
California, to marry (and then divorce) a Jamaican man of African-Caribbean
heritage, and raise her daughters amidst the onerous strictures of “Black”
America. Her sisters and brother (he married a Mexican) also blazed their own
trails, to an extent unusual even today.

South Asians are going to have to grapple and come to terms with these
complexities, and hopefully learn from them.

The poet and cultural theorist Ranjit Hoskote aptly referenced Satyajit Ray’s
1984 classic movie, when he commented on Twitter this week, “What saddens me is
the playing up, in India, of her Tamil Brahmin connections - with no mention of
her Afro-Caribbean heritage, which involves histories of a very different kind.
Some people who feel threatened by marvellous transcultural hybridity at home
seem to celebrate it when it happens overseas. Ghare Baire!”

It’s already clear that citizens of the subcontinent will now spend months –
and, fingers crossed – years obsessively parsing everything that Kamala Harris
says and does. Actually, if the early days after her nomination are any

DON'T DISRESPECT MEMORY
OF DR. JACK DE SEQUEiRA

Stephen Dias, Dona Paula

The biggest statue of Dr. Jack de Sequeira in Goa, the Architect of Goa's
unique identity and the Father of the Opinion Poll, the only referendum
held in India since independence on 16th January, 1967 is located at NIO
Circle, Dona Paula. This area is under the jurisdiction of the Corporation
of City of Panjim. It is a great disrespect to the memory of the first
Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly as although the surrounding area
has been cleared up and bedecked in the run-up to the Independence day,
only the portion of the circle where the statue of Dr. Jack de Sequeira is
installed has not be cleared off by trimming the bushes and the shrubs in
the circle by the CCP. The authorities including GSDIC should immediately
clear this area and accord respect to the memory of Dr. Jack de Sequeira
whose fluent rhetoric and charisma clinched the Opinion Poll verdict for
keeping Goa a separate entity which is now a full-fledged state and has a
Rajya Sabha MP, two Lok Sabha MPs and an Assembly consisting of 40 MLAs.
This became possible only because of the efforts of Dr. Jack de Sequeira
who conclusively clinched the Opinion Poll verdict and who was the main
mastermind behind 19 constituencies in Goa, Daman and Diu then having voted
against the merger while the merger forces could only muster 11
constituencies. It would be in the fitness of things that the Mayor of CCP
maintain the NIO Circle with the pedestal and the statue of Dr. Jack de
Sequeira spic and span. Had it not been for Dr. Jack de Sequeira's noble
efforts, Goa would have become a backyard of Maharashtra with only two
district and without a separate identity that the brainchild of the Opinion
Poll so very stolidly fought for.

August 14 2020

Last Friday, an Air India Express Boeing 737 landed at Kozhikode airport in
Kerala. Kerala, couldn't stop, overshot the runway and fell 35 feet down
the slope there. 18 people, including both pilots, died. 172 survived,
though dozens were badly injured.

The website flightradar24.com tracks commercial flights around the world;
this one included of course. My mathematics column for Mint today uses
their data to reconstruct the last half hour of this flight that ended in
tragedy.

Take a look:
https://www.livemint.com/opinion/columns/opinion-up-down-all-around-ix1134-s-last-half-hour-11597371404601.html

And do let me know what you think.

yours,
dilip

---

Up, down and all around: IX1134’s last half hour

At about 710pm, the altimeter shows that they are at just about 10,000 feet
above sea level. It’s been about three-and-a-half hours since they took
off.

Not that they have been at 10,000 feet all that while, not at all. At the
start, they had climbed steadily — just the usual — reaching their cruising
altitude of 35,000 feet within half an hour. They stayed there for nearly
three hours, barreling along at 800km/h and tracking a constant 124° — just
east of south-east — all through. The descent began fifteen minutes ago: a
rapid 3000 feet per minute for the first few minutes, then easing up to
about 1000 fpm. While descending, they have also slowed significantly, to
about 580 km/h now. A few gentle banks to left and right too, and now they
are tracking a little closer to due east than 124°; in fact, at 105°, they
are almost perfectly aligned with the runway that’s ahead.

What is this tracking measure, you ask? Superimpose a clock onto a compass,
so that north coincides with 12 on the dial. That is, if you travel due
north, you’re said to be tracking 0°. If you then turn 90° clockwise,
you’ll end up facing east, looking at 3 on the dial: thus tracking 90°
means heading directly east. 105°, then, is 15° further clockwise, or
further to the south. That’s about the orientation of the runway.
Naturally, if they want to land there the plane must fly in on that heading.

There’s no milestone marking 10,000 feet, of course. Nor is it likely that
veteran pilots will notice the number on the altimeter. But think of it
here as a reminder that the landing is not far away. Actually, at that
moment they are a little less than 20km out at sea, about 40km from the
airport — but at 580 km/h, those are not large distances. Indeed, a minute
later they cross the coast, just north of the mouth of a river, and are now
down to 9,000 feet. There’s an almost nonexistent beach below, and a short
stretch of coastal plain dotted with plenty of houses, then they cross the
river itself. More houses on the other side, and from here, the flight path
is a straight line more or less through the shallow valley of a stream that
empties into the same river. The land below now rises into low hills, still
with plenty of houses and structures, if not quite as dense as near the
coast.

Two minutes pass and they have descended below 7000 feet and are just 4km
west of the runway. They have slowed even more and are now flying at about
480 km/h. Only a few seconds later, the runway is a mere half kilometre
ahead.

But they will not land. For they are at 6000 feet, far too high to land
when just half a kilometre from the runway. And 480 km/h is far too fast as
well. If you were on the ground and could see the plane above, you’d
conclude that this is just an approach. In fact, if it flew directly
overhead, you may even realize that they are not really aligned with the
runway either. The 105° heading is right, but they are on a flight path
that is parallel to and about 100m south of the runway. There’s a road of
sorts there, but of course it’s no runway.

No, this flight is not landing.

Flying parallel to the runway and several thousand feet off the ground, the
plane roars over the airport. About a fifth of the way along the runway’s
3km length, they bank left till, shortly before flying past the end of the
runway, they are tracking 90°, due east. The plane is losing both height
and speed steadily, an indication that they are indeed planning a landing.
Only, they want to do it by approaching the other end — the eastern end —
of the runway.

Three minutes that they fly due east. At 20km east of the airport, they
have slowed to 400km/h and are down to about 3300 feet. That’s when they
bank right into a broad semicircle, some 4km in diameter. The huge turn
takes a couple of minutes and when they come out of it, they are on a 285°
heading, just north of due west — so in fact, they made slightly more than
a semicircle. 285° means they are once again aligned with the runway, only
this time from the east. They are also now flying at just 310km/h.

This time, they will land.

Five minutes pass. They have lost another 20km/h and well over a thousand
feet in altitude. They are perfectly aligned with the runway as they soar
in over its
