The real circus was exposed in divorce court where Dinesh's wiferevealed she had been battered by him very frequently. To be elected, the Senators contested elections that were conducted legally and fairly. Trump the Savage calledthe Georgia Secretary of State and demanded he 'find' him 11,000 votes in a recount. [Goanet] The Goan WHITE FATHER of Zanzibar .....
Would you believe it there was a GOAN WHITE FATHER (This is the first time I am hearing of a coloured White Father) The order started in French North Africa and they were dressed in Black. The picture I saw of this remarkable Goan White Father, was he was seated in a human drawn Rickshaw .The pullers of the two wheeler were all Moslems turbaned or fezzed. The Priest was calledFr. Lucien D'sa. ...His name even appeared in the the Zanzibar Gazette of 1910 ...This meant that he could officiate at Catholic Marriages etc .. Where did he go after Zanzibar to the Mainland or to Goa .. I personally own a great deal to Fr. Walsh, from Eire. who was an Irish White Father and a real nationalist. I do not know how my Father knew Father Walsh, but we went to see him, he suggested that I could get a degree from University of London, without going to London, just as we did our Cambridge School Certificate without going to Cambridge !!! That brought a whole lot of Goans from DSM ...Father Walsh advised President Julius Nyerere. Being Irish he was friendly with the 5 Irish Fathers in Pugu Secondary School. ...that was where I was the Geographer Master ...teaching the first crop of Tanzania 7 students for their Cambridge A level. What a crop ...3 of them became Judges, one a Government Verifier in Treasury, one Head of National Development Corporation/etc .It is not what you teach its how you encourage students to think I picked a blade of grass and I asked them what was its name ...only one Maasai knew its name but the students knew a great deal about the vegetation of Great Britain...It was not only colonization of the land but also the mind. So who was this Goan White Father Adolfo ... [Goanet] GOA WILL FACE A MAN MADE CATASTROPHIC ENVIRONMENTAL DISASTER
The Uttarakhand Glacier tragedy has been at the cost of climate change and lack of proper development. For years environmentalists have been crying themselves hoarse about the model of development being followed in these fragile mountain scapes, and yet the advice was not heeded and the disaster now is a man made one. We have childhood memories of incessant rains in Goa during our school days when it poured non-stop for even 8 to 10 days. But there was never ever such flooding all over like we are witnessing in recent years. The nature’s fury that the State has been facing has been predicted for years by our environmental scientists Dr Nandkumar Kamat and Dr. Joe D’Souza but it has all fallen on deaf years with the authorities conveniently taking no corrective measures. The colossal environmental degradation that Goa has been witnessing over the years by way of rampant destruction of hills, fragmentation of pristine vegetated verdant landscapes and ruthless chopping of trees by not even sparing from pouring concrete in the low lying fields has finally shown the impact of criminal interference in Goa's age old natural ecosystems. The traditional drainage systems, waterways and outlets for natural flow of rainwater are choked all over with no functional drainage system in place. The capacitance Goan communities built over centuries with their time tested strategies designed to secure us from flooding that we ourselves had witnessed in our childhood has now all gone for a toss. Lack of proper planning while mushrooming of environmentally incompatible new constructions all over without the much needed infrastructure has landed Goa in a State of chaos. With political blessings the real estate mafia has swiftly enriched itself multifold while leaving the common man to face the brunt of their misdeeds. The farmers of Goa had never suffered so much at any point in the past. Nature is kicking back as they say. If those in power do not take urgent corrective, well planned and sustainable measures to save the natural ecosystems, the god gifted landscape, the ecosensitive beaches, sand dunes, Khazans, wetlands, Salt pans, the last remaining hills and farms, the orchards, rivers, estuaries, lakes, ponds, springs, fountains of Goa for protecting our ecology, we will have to face a bigger catastrophic disaster soon. Goa has been a beautiful accident of history endowed with abundant resources. But the foolishness and rampant greed of those in power has brought this state to a stage in history when one day Mother Nature may crack the whip and Goa already threatened by the rising sea level, will simply be wiped out from the face of this planet. Before that happens let better sense prevail. A few personal observations: 1. Al Jazeera does a great and often risky job on whatever they investigate. This Bangladesh investigation is international award winning quality. 2. Substitute General for high police official or top ruling party functionary and you have this situation being replicated in India more times than you can imagine. 3. Western nations no matter what they say, count on this corruption and money laundering. A relatively little put in the pockets of a few important people and they can bleed the country for a million times that. https://www.aljazeera.com/features/2021/2/2/the-gangster-the-general-and-the-prime-minister-of-bangladesh Roland. [Goanet] What Does the Title 'Esquire' Mean, Anyway?
An in-depth and well-written article as one typically finds in Atlas Obscura, this one about about the title Esquire. In the few decades following British rule in India it was common to use the title Esquire after a gentleman’s name as in Thomas Fernandes Esq. in letter and envelope addresses. In Portuguese India such form of address for genteel folk (read higher Goan classes) was Exmo. Sr., an abbreviation for Excelentissimo Senhor, meaning Dear Sir, Respecful Mr., or Excellency. Both forms of addresses have since vanished. Some readers with a sense of history will enjoy this: https://www.atlasobscura.com/articles/what-is-an-esquire Roland. Toronto.

*XAVIER CENTRE OF HISTORICAL RESEARCH* Cordially invites you to an *online* *lecture on* *THE STORY OF THE BOOK IN GOA:* *From the 16th Century to the Present times.* By Frederick Noronha Goa was home to the first-ever Gutenberg-style printing press in Asia. But, over the centuries, Goa seems to have lost track of the work that had been done, and has been producing few books itself. Asia's first press reached here accidentally in 1556, via the Jesuits. This does not imply that the press played only a religious role. So, what was its impact of the early presses at Old Goa, Margao and Rachol? In what way did this influence Goan writing of the twentieth-century? Can the book be a tool to understand the complex history of Goa, its relationship with the outside world, and the region's significant but little-understood diaspora? You might be surprised by what emerges from the story of the book in Goa *Frederick Noronha has been a journalist, photography enthusiast, alternative publisher and Wikipedian. Between 2013 and 2020 he undertook his doctoral research at the Goa University's Department of English (under Prof Andre Rafael Fernandes) on publishing in twentieth-century Goa. His viva voce was conducted last month, at which Prof Abhijit Gupta of Jadhavpur University, one of the foremost authorities of book history in India, was the external examiner. [Goanet] AS PART OF THE POLITICAL MISCHIEF MANY RIBANDAR VOTERS MOVED TO A WARD IN PANAJI
Ribandar is five kilometers away from the capital city but it has been part of the Panjim Municipal Council and now the Corporation of the City of Panaji CCP). Ribandar comprised of Ward No 29 and 30. In view of the now densely populated Ribandar they should have added another ward at Ribandar. But what has crookedly been done in a very stupendous decision, is to add some hundreds of Ribandar voters to Ward No 28 which is in Panaji. All this is politically manipulated and done with vested interest. Ribandar may be part of CCP but as far as overall development and civic amenities is concerned, we remain utterly neglected and in a decaying state despite the very high municipal taxes we pay. There are some villages in Goa that are much better off. We would have been better off as part of a Panchayat. Ribandar has for decades been demanding a football ground, a community hall and a proper market but it is very anguishing that these long standing demands of Ribandarites are yet to be fulfilled. We do not have a Children’s park or a garden nor a public library and there is lack of proper sanitation with garbage strewn all over. Erratic power and water supply is the order of the day with no sewage line in place. And in the Fonduvem Ward of Ribandar even the dead are denied a proper crematorium to Rest in Peace. [Goanet] How do you explain this?
We see this all over Goa (and India, too). Take a look at the photo from this morning - https://www.parrikar.org/misc/Workers.jpg In every civilized country today, workers are outfitted with electro-mechanical equipment for this kind of civil works. But not in this land apparently. We see builders, contractors, and all manner of fatcats driving around in their shiny Mercs, Range Rovers, and Audis while their workers sweat it out with implements from the 12th Century. Why is it like this? One consequence I have already addressed in a recent post - the abysmal quality of Indian workmanship. When you have scant regard for humans and their physical labour, it will attract the most desperate people to the job, people who do not have proper training for the task at hand. One reason for this situation I heard was, labour contractors prefer it this way as they can skim off the wages meant for the workers. Modern equipment would mean a much reduced labour force and therefore not much opportunity for graft. I don't know if there is any merit to this explanation. r

[Goanet] One query...two answers (from among many)
Q on Fb group: Quick question. Is carnival a religious celebration or state celebration? A It is a Goa State celebration since 1988. Prior to that it was an Union Territory celebration since 1971. It was a people's celebration . Without floats but cocote battles, men dressed as clowns or devils, water pistols and sll kind of talcum and colours. In Mapusa, the defeat of Kustoba Rane by the Tropa dos Suissos was celebrated with a Thanksgiving mass at the Capella de Suissos (incorrectly translated as Swiss Chapel) and a profession up the hill to the Delegado de Saude (now UHC) with the latest married couples in Angodd dressed as the Ranes. No King Momo in Mapusa, it was a Rano. The Rane's flag was shot down on Tuesday. Documented by Dona Bertha de Menezes in her book on the chapel. (Grandmother of Sandip Jacques, IAS) A It is a government patronised tamasha to promote tourism. (This came up via the Goa Speaks group. Replies from Tony Martin and Miguel Braganza)
