[Goanet] THE SICKENING POLITICAL DISCOURSE IN GOA
As the 2022 Goa Assembly elections are fast approaching we have been witnessing with deep anguish the sagging levels of Goa’s political class which is by the day only getting further corroded. The latest needless discourse over caste and religion is in utter bad taste. This current debate is disturbing for those of us who have grown up in the warmest company of a multitude of friends hailing from all creeds, communities and castes. We are all on a short voyage, the end of which we know not. So let us live and cherish every day we have caring and loving the entire human community at large. Goa and Goans have been known to be unique and we must not allow that distinctive fabric to be ruptured by the senseless and perverse that have descended on our political turf. The Political arena cannot be about personalities or religious and caste differences. It is much more than that! We need to rectify the current wilful neglect and stagnation of Goa by ensuring that we have politicians of competence, honesty, dedication, experience and selfless determination above all else. We must always firmly believe that Temples, Mosques and the Churches besides other places of worship should be our focal points to unite diverse communities instead of creating rifts amongst us. For we are all children of that one loving and tolerant God. Adv. [Goanet] LIVING IN HARMONY
LIVING IN HARMONY BY Stephen Dias Resident of Dona Paula Social Activist After the Liberation of Goa, the possibility of merging Goa with Maharastra or Karnataka was floated. However, Dr. Jack de Sequeira and others pushed for Goa to be a separate state and the Opinion poll gave its verdict. Otherwise Goa would have been merged with Maharashtra and Goans would have lost their identity. Mumbai would have been the capital and even to get a simple birth certificate Goans would had to go to Mumbai as it is capital city of Maharastra. The usage of Marathi would be standard. Life would be very different and our children would have been born into a different world. We have much to be grateful for to anti-merger leaders like Jack Sequeira, who fought tooth and nail to ensure that Goa remained a separate state. I, now a senior citizen, distinctly remember as a young man in 1967 going around with a group of Goans organised by Dr. Jack Sequeira at the Casa Bar Barreto in Panjim. We went house to house talking to people and we were also part of the movement that moved by trucks and motorcycle motorcade to Banastarim and Mardol where we ended up in a fight with MGP forces. We also proceeded many areas accross Goa appealing to the Goan voters to please vote for the two leaves symbol of the United Goans party and to ensure that that the mergerists were defeated lock, stock and barrel. The battle for Goa was never about religion. Dr. Jack de Sequeira never directed us to destroy any temple, he only asked us to fight for our identity against merger with Maharastra. Goans had a good unity prior to Liberation among all religions and castes and it is only in the last 20 odd years, after the BJP came to power, that we lost our unity. There is no point blaming the Portuguese on issues of destroying any Hindu temples. It is well known that several Hindu temples were rebuilt by the Portuguese themselves and Sudin has confirmed in the local newspapers newspaper that their Goddess Mahalsa who was in Quelshi, Verna was shifted to Mardol, that Mahalaximi that was in Colva was shifted and rebuilt 400 years ago in Bhandora where Sudin Dhavlikar resides, and that Lord Ganesh from Curca was shifted to Nagueshi in Bhandora. Sudin made a strong statement that the Portuguese did not destroy or raze any of the above Hindu temples, but relocated/shifted them to their present sites at the above respective places. It makes sense that Salcete today is the Catholic heartland and therefore it would be inconvenient as well as expensive for poor Hindus from Ponda taluka to go to all the way in Salcete for prayers and worship. It may be recalled that the same Mr. Sudin Dhavlikar is now posing as a secularist because of his acquaintances with Tiramool Congress. This U-turn and changes in the stand by political leaders must not confuse the voters already perplexed over this issue. Election 2022 must centre around economic development of Goa and Goans. We must know that Goa is a world renowned Tourism destination which correctly adversely affected to Covid 19 and its virus variant Omicron. We must endeavour to promote Tourism as the backbone of our economy as mining has destroyed the aquifers and made agriculture reductant in this mining talukas of Goa. We must reclaim and restore silted agricultural fields around Bicholim, Quepem, Sanguem, Satari, Valpoi etc and thereon we must integrate with value addition to our agricultural produce. For example we can convert rice into porridge or biscuits similarly coconut harvest can be transformed into coconut milk curries, cookies, biscuits, cake called baatt etc. Unnecessarily raking up of non issues and giving it a religious colour, smacks of lack of vision by the BJP government in power today. We Goans must be aware of the hidden agenda of polarization resorted to by the immature CM Pramod Sawant. It is also very critical that secular forces like the AAP, Congress, Trinamool Congress, come together to save the State of Goa from safron onslaught.

[Goanet] {Dilip's essays} Neena Gupta: in love with mathematics
Dec 26 It was Srinivasa Ramanujan's birthday on December 22, now observed as National Mathematics Day. That's why I waited till this last week to write about Neena Gupta. She's a mathematician at the Indian Statistical Institute in Calcutta (a breeding ground for plenty of outstanding mathematicians, by the way). She recently won the Ramanujan Prize for Young Mathematicians from Developing Countries. My Friday Mint article is about Dr Gupta and her work (to the extent I can understand and explain it, which isn't much of an extent). Check it out - Neena Gupta: In love with mathematics, https://www.livemint.com/opinion/online-views/neena-gupta-in-love-with-mathematics-11640273686261.html (and the aside that prompted my title). Reactions/corrections, as always, most welcome! cheers, dilip --- Neena Gupta: in love with mathematics A young woman I met the afternoon I started writing this spoke about a competitive examination that she had "failed" once. She was considering trying again. There was an obstacle, though. One part of the exam is a paper in mathematics. Nothing really esoteric, she said herself, just "first-year-college level stuff." But the prospect of studying for it, and for a second time, frightened her. I made some noises about how it probably would be easier the second time, about how it need not be frightening. (I even briefly thought of asking if I could help her with it in some way.) None of it made any difference. She seemed to have decided: "Mathematics? No exam for me." So it is that another bright young woman is lost to a particular career option - purely because of mathematics. I couldn't help a fleeting sadness. But I also couldn't help thinking about still another bright young woman who is in the news this week, also because of mathematics. That's this year's recipient of the Ramanujan Prize for Young Mathematicians from Developing Countries: Neena Gupta of the Indian Statistical Institute (ISI) in Kolkata. Of course it's a stretch to make the comparison, but I wonder: what is it about mathematics that frightens some of us, but captivates others? It's a question worth asking because Gupta was clearly captivated from a very early age. In an interview, she said: "I was not the kind who got full marks in maths but I just loved to solve problems and spend hours doing maths." Certainly a good start. And if she didn't get full marks then, it didn't matter much. For she has gone on to earn degrees in mathematics, including a PhD from the ISI. Besides, her path-breaking research has just won her this major mathematics award, named for a great mathematician. Gupta's research during her PhD was in commutative algebra, an area of number theory that studies mathematical objects known as commutative rings. She is now also known for her work in affine algebraic geometry. I realize these are exotic terms that are hard to understand and explain to people outside mathematics. But let me try to give you at least a sketchy sense of what they involve. "Commutative" is a mathematical adjective that is actually familiar to first-year college students. It refers to an operation that produces the same result regardless of the order of the numbers it operates on. For example, addition is commutative: 314 + 159 = 473, and 159 + 314 = 473. Multiplication is commutative too: 314 x 159 = 49926 = 159 x 314. On the other hand, subtraction is not commutative: 314 - 159 = 154, which is not the same as 159 - 314. Nor is division commutative, and I'll leave you to figure that out. Aside: To drive this idea firmly into our first-year college heads, a mathematics test had a question I still remember. We were given a series of phrases and asked to choose which ones were commutative. One was "in love with". That is, if Krishna is in love with Kiran, is Kiran in love with Krishna? Perhaps it spoke for my state of mind then that I decided it wasn't commutative. End of aside. Commutative rings, then, are sets of numbers - or more generally, mathematical constructs - in which multiplication is commutative. The set of all integers is one such. There are others. There are also rings in which multiplication is not commutative - matrices, also a first-year college mathematical staple, are a common example. To get a whiff of what affine geometry is, it helps to know the meaning of the word affine: "allowing for or preserving parallel relationships." Think of this: draw a straight line on a piece of paper, and then mark a point that's not on the line. Now there is precisely one straight line that is both parallel to your original line and that passes through your marked point. This is "Playfair's Axiom". If it seems obvious to you, it is practically the definition of parallel lines. It is also fundamental to affine geometry, which in some ways is really the study of parallel lines. If we have a set of points and associated straight lines, and axioms like Playfair apply to them, what are the properties of such a
[Goanet] WHY ME AND NOW
WHY NOW AND ME It is difficult to fathom the mystery or comprehend with our finite minds the truth of life and death. We come to this world and leave this planet unannounced and without our consent or knowledge. We can shed ocean of tears, meditate ad nauseum, look to science, introspect with an attempt to unravel this natural, universal mystery in vain, without fully satisfactory, justifiable reasons, We have many searching questions for which there is no answer and there will never be that will put us at ease and comfort. At times we can take recourse and comfort to some visible signs, causes as illness, accidents, lack of proper care ,precautions and judgment, that only calm momentarily our inquisitive nature. We are inclined to speculate and flagellate with a guilt complex. We may conclude it is a punishment, a curse ,a mid course correction of life as a destiny When an shattering experience ,disaster, misfortune suddenly and unexpectedly engulfs us.our mind is in frantic search for the reason and truth..It is universal truth that all living things must perish one day, or better still to accept that we are born to die. Last resort of consolation is that it's the will of Divine and that it must happen accordingly. The spiritual approach may offer us some solace as a balm for our tortured minds. We wilk soon reliase that we are not exclusively selected for this unbearable mental distress, but there are endless instances where people are engulfed in grief of immense nagnitude It is a proverbial truth that my complaint to buy shoes is much less in comparison to the one who has no legs.It is natural to magnify our woes as unparalled . It is not understandable as to why some are called very early in life, even before birth, others at a very young age and still others after living long, fulfilling dreams. Some even beseach death and pray for it. We come across people who have lost their only bread winner, only child, a n orphaned child just after birth, some parents are lonely, confined to aged homes, or they have resources but none to take care of or worst still no biogical issues.Thete are instances when adopted children are more loving , understanding then biological childten Parents are mudered to posses property and wealth People die in tragic accidents , natural calamities, pandemic ,wars and terrorist strikes for no faults of their own. There are instances of miraculous saves from jaws of death. It is apt to define such truths as the destiny, over which living things including humans have no control. No matter what you do, it will still occur .Research in medicine and science, surgery have at best prolonged life, but have not yet unraveled the formula that troubles our existence and death .It is only the faith and belief in some religions that can console, comfort us that it is the will of God, We are akin to travelers just passing through from our temporary abode to permanent, enduring space., Yet others believe in rebirth, depending upon their deeds while on this earth. Then some are of the opinion that very thing ends with exhaling the last breath just as birth begins with inhaling. Do other forms of life, excluding humans, have meaning to their existence, if not to be solely for the benefit of mankind? Spiritual solace suggests that death is the entry gate to eternal happiness ,where there is no sickness, pain , fear no wants or desires Is the heaven or hell a state of mind to be satiated here itself or beyond life? We are disappointed and despair that we are unable to fulfill our plans for self, family and society and need a little longer to achieve our goals ,hence lament and repent our early departure in unexplained circimstances .Such luxury of extended time beyond expiry date is not our right to demand. Hence it is best to live for today as if it is the last day. We wonder why the farmer will pluck the raw mangoes for pickles, others when due for ripening and yet leave others on the tree untouched. It is his will as the owner and master and no one can challenge his decisions or it will have any impact on him. Similarly a gardener plucks flowers for sale and decoration and leaves others to admire a beauty of riots of colours and soothe his mind. , When we depart we just return without anything, leaving everything behind. ALL our earthly wealth accumulated by fair and foul means, our degrees, our position fame is no valid currency after life. Our good ,generous deeds are our assets that will live much longer .Our charity towards poor ,hungry, naked, thirsty and in extreme physical needs will earn us eternal credits , There is no point in cursing, swearing, blaming for our departure or simply and helplessly resigning to destiny., when we have been bestowed with the gift of freedom and will to exercise our destiny What matters the most is the span of life lived selflessly ,not how long we existed on this planet Accepting our fate and adjusting to life
[Goanet] {Dilip's essays} There's a Webb to be weaved
Dec 26 Yesterday, the JWST finally took off from French Guiana and soared into space. That's the James Webb Space Telescope, a spectacular piece of design and engineering that will open our eyes to wonders of the universe that we can only guess at today. It's a triumph of human ingenuity that, for me, puts in the shade all the divisions and bigotry we're growing too accustomed to here on planet Earth. I trust you feel the same! But I'll say no more. My column on the JWST went up on Mint just over a week ago. Check it out: There's a Webb to be weaved, https://www.livemint.com/technology/gadgets/theres-a-webb-to-be-weaved-11639675103327.html Write to me, sing to me if you like, of your own sense of wonder over Webb. cheers, dilip PS: "Weaved"? or "woven"? --- There's a Webb to be weaved Not long ago, the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) turned its gaze on an explosion. Astronomers had witnessed the death of a star inside the so-called Butterfly Galaxies in the constellation Virgo, about 60 million light years away. At the end of their lives, stars explode, forming what's known as a supernova. So as soon as this supernova (called SN 2020fqv) was detected, a team of astronomers "triggered our ultra-rapid target-of-opportunity program with HST to obtain very early-time" observations of SN 2020fqv. ("Last Year Before Death: Observations of SN 2020fqv by TESS and Friends", Samaporn Tinyanont et al, TESS Science Conference, 2-6 August 2021, https://ui.adsabs.harvard.edu/abs/2021tsc2.confE.144T/abstract.) The result was a ringside view - as much as being 60 million light years away can be described as one - of the early moments after the star's death. HST was on the job within hours of this one's death. This meant that the telescope was able to examine what the star ejected in the last months of its life. As you might imagine, that's not a frequent occurrence. While stars are dying all the time, it's rare that we can actually see a supernova. It's rarer still that we have a powerful telescope handy to observe it. But this is just what happened with SN 2020fqv and the HST. The result is that we know more about the final moments of stars, maybe even enough to detect signs that one is about to die and go supernova. In fact, astronomers have taken to calling SN 2020fqv the "Rosetta Stone" of supernovas. The original Rosetta Stone, remember, was what led to the deciphering of Egyptian hieroglyphics in 1799. In the same way, SN 2020fqv has taught us plenty that we didn't know about supernovas. There's a lot more to tell in this story. But my point here is really about the "final moments" of the HST. It has been a workhorse of astronomy for three decades now. It shows no signs of letting up on that pace of astronomical discoveries - this Rosetta Stone being just one example. But its days as that workhorse of astronomy are now numbered. Though it's not that the HST is about to explode, or even fall into disuse. Not at all. But as I mentioned in my last column here, there's a new kid on the block: the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) will soar into space on December 24. The JWST will settle into an orbit that is about 1.6 million km beyond the moon. This is a spot in space known as a Lagrange point. Where exactly it is, is defined by the presence of the Earth and the Sun. It is that point at which, for any object, the force required to keep it in orbit equals the pull of gravity from the Earth and the Sun. Because of this, the object can stay essentially in place without needing much fuel. >From that vantage point, using its mirror that's three times larger than the HST's, the JWST promises even greater astronomical triumphs than the HST has brought us. Astronomers expect to use the JWST to learn more about the universe as it was very soon after the Big Bang - a period of time that we know about more via speculation and inference than via real data. How will they do that? By observing extremely distant objects, so distant that we see them now as they existed in those early years. The HST showed us galaxies up to about 13 billion light years away, meaning that light from there has taken that long to reach the HST, meaning in turn that we are seeing them as they existed 13 billion years ago. The JWST will take us even further back in time. It should be able to show us stars and galaxies as they were actually forming in those infant first few hundred million years of the universe's existence. But with the JWST, astronomers also want to make progress towards answering that ancient question - are we alone? This is because JWST will allow much closer examinations than we have ever managed of exoplanets, planets that orbit other stars. By now, we know of thousands of exoplanets. The challenge is to examine each of them for signs of life, or signs that it might support life. It's not so much that astronomers expect to discover whether life does exist, or even could exist, outside our planet. Instead, they are
