Re: [Goanet] [Goanet-News] Modi's Attempt to Woo the Christian Community (Ram Puniyani)

2024-01-04 Thread Joao Paulo Cota
No surprise, it is election time soon, so what a better time to try to appease
this minority community, which otherwise is being openly discriminated all the
time by the BJP-RSS alliance throughout India with full impunity.
Finally he has decided to host a nice party for Christmas - one day in a year
maybe where no Christian was murdered in is beloved Bharat.
He and his henchmen do not care about Christians in India, he only uses various
communities for his personal, selfish gains.
Like his friend dictators Putin and Kim Jong Un, they will do whatever is
possible to stay in power. Looks like the attempt to jail Rahul Gandhi for
alleged defamation did not go that well, unlike Alexei Navalny's jail term,
thanks for the last few remnants of true democracy in the country - the Supreme
Court.
Having family members and friends as priests and nuns working as missionaries
and nurses in various parts of India, I do get a total different story of
events that are completely different from what is being published by the BJP
controlled press.
Just hope that Christians in India do not fall for Modi's Bollywood style
charming acts.
Next show, Ramadan.

Subject: [Goanet-News] Modi's Attempt to Woo the Christian Community (Ram
Puniyani)

Ram Puniyani
ram.puniy...@gmail.com

On December 25, 2023, Prime Minister Narnedra Modi invited
many Christians for an interaction and to greet them. He
lauded the community for their social work [1] and hailed the
inclusive teachings of Lord Jesus Christ. He also went on to
recall his long association with the community leaders. A
couple of days later in Kerala nearly two hundred Christians
joined the BJP. The Hindu newspaper reports, "A meeting of
the BJP State leadership in Kottayam here on Monday decided
to launch a 10-day-long Sneha Yathra, which seeks to win over
the community by explaining its position [2] on various
issues, including the Manipur violence." At the same time,
Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan was on the dot when he stated
that, "Things have reached such a pass in Manipur that a
section of people... Christian community cannot live We
have seen the state Government and Central Government
maintaining silence." (I E Jan 2, 2024, Mumbai)

As the next general elections are approaching, the
RSS-BJP have activated their attempts to woo the
Christian community. As such the present plight of
Christian community is reflected in various
national and international reports and indices of
religious freedom. Two incidents of persecution
take place every day as per the Vada Na Todo
Abhiyan (The Don't Break Your Promise Campaign).
In UP "...100 pastors and even ordinary men and
women, are in jail under charges of [3] illegal
conversions when all they were doing was
celebrating birthdays or conducting Sunday prayers."

The Government is also investigating agencies against
Cardinal and Pastors as per the memorandum cited above.
According to the United Christian Forum, a total of
302 attacks [4] took place against Christians in the first
seven months of 2022. A petition filed by Archbishop Peter
Machado, National Solidarity Forum and Evangelical Fellowship
of India, states that the "State has failed to take immediate
and necessary action against groups that have caused
widespread violence [5] and used hate speech against the
Christian community, including attacks at their places of
worship and disruption of prayer meetings."

The United States Commission on International Religious
Freedom (USCIRF) has, for the fourth consecutive year,
declared India as a country of particular concern [6] and
asked the US Administration to draw up their policies
accordingly.

As per Open Doors in South Africa, "Since the current
government came to power in May 2014 pressure on Christians
has risen dramatically Hindu extremists attack others
with impunity, using extreme violence in some area.
Increasing numbers of states are also implementing
anti-conversion laws, supposedly to stop Hindus being
forcibly converted to other religions [7], but in reality,
they are often used as an excuse to harass and intimidate
Christians Being a pastor is one of the riskiest
vocations in the country today. Hindu extremists target them
with violent attacks to sow fear in the wider Christian
community."

The present plight of Christian community is rooted in the
Hindutva discourse where Islam and Christianity are regarded
as foreign religions. The RSS's second Sarsanghchalak, M.S.
Golwalkar in his book The Bunch of Thoughts states that
Muslims, Christians [8] and Communists are an internal threat
to Hindu nation.

The RSS propaganda in Shakhas is conducted on these lines.

With the increase in intensity of Hindutva activities, the
anti-Christia

Re: [Goanet] [GOABOOKCLUB] Increasing levels of dissolved CO2 disrupt fish’s olfactory skills, study finds.

2018-08-13 Thread Joao Paulo Cota
Hi Augusto,

I did just generalise the word anglers as both those who fish with both rod and
net. In the west, both activities slightly overlap, hence perhaps my overlook.

But you are absolutely correct in the case of Goa, the worst damage is being
done by these people who catch fish with nets whose holes that are too tiny to
ensure all fish sizes are caught.

Still worse are these trawlers that have nets that should be classified as
illegal as these quantities of fish caught is by the tonne as opposed to a few
hundred kilos by the sluice guys and a few kilos (if not grammes) by the
private anglers.

Real anglers are the ones who can easily take the lead and show sustainable
fishing by example.

One cannot rely on these useless governments with corrupt ministers for whom
fishstocks depletion is the last thing on their agenda. Only committed people
can make such a change for a better future.

Is anyone doing anything about this in Goa?

Regards,

JP

A couple of comments about this thread:
1) Themistocles mentions that 'catfish' is 'tigur' in Konkani. Catfish is
usually called 'sangott'. I'm not sure what tigur (or thigur as we pronounce
it in North Goa) is called in English although it might well may be a variety
of catfish. Wonder whether someone can clarify.

2) Joao Cota blames (among others) anglers for fish depletion. An angler is
defined as a person who fishes with a rod and line. I doubt whether the volume
of fish caught by anglers can cause fish to be seriously depleted. What is more
likely is that over-fishing may be be caused by the nets used in ponds and
'manos'es (sluice gates) which are commercially auctioned off to the highest
bidder.

Yes. Our water bodies including rivers have become highly polluted. Many

Re: [Goanet] [GOABOOKCLUB] Increasing levels of dissolved CO2 disrupt fish’s olfactory skills, study finds.

2018-08-13 Thread Joao Paulo Cota
This unfortunate situation in Goa is not just caused by pollution but also due
to overfishing and lack of fishing laws. Anglers catch tiny young fish and will
always find a recipe to cook these. These fish are deprived from growing up as
adults and procreating, thereby depleting fishstocks. At the end, these very
same morons complain that there is not fish in the waters!

The notion of sustainable fishing that involves throwing back live young fish
back to the water just does not sink in on local angler's mindsets. The excuse
on forums that 'if I don't take it home, somebody will' does not help the
argument.

I personally think that although many things in Goa are only getting worse -
environment, corruption, etc - there is always a glimmer of hope if there are
responsible people always ready to make a stand for the right thing to do.
Awareness is key to anything in life. Like protesting and getting complaints to
the fisheries department to take action against pollutants being thrown in
fresh water bodies, having new laws prohibiting use of small holed nets,
introduction of fishing seasons, etc are essential if one wants to see fish in
the fresh waters of Goa. One can make one government body check another...

Else, nice images of the past - fish, animals, birds - would be the only thing
left for future generations to see.

Re: [Goanet] [goamusician] Emiliano Da Cruz

2015-05-15 Thread Joao Paulo Cota
Hi Joel,Great compilation of one of the greatest musicians Goa has ever
produced.Emiliano was a family friend for over half a century, music being the
main connection between our families.Further to what Paulo Dias mentioned on
his reply, I was the one holding the cassettes at Emiliano's request. It was
very unfortunate that Goan Association UK refused to let these cassettes be
even given for distribution for donation for the man who gave so much for
everyone, including themselves, and yet they allowed pirated music of Emiliano
to be played and sold openly at the Goan Festival to the Goan public, thus
depriving the man of his rightful meagre copyright earnings. When challenged,
they protected those who sold his pirated music...I have just met Emiliano
earlier this year and was very sad to see him so unwell as he had serious
health issues. However, we shared our jokes and stories as we usually do,
despite him struggling to breathe. He gave me a signed copy of his latest album
with the condition I play it and give him my honest feedback. I did and oh boy,
it was another one of his great soothing music CD's.Emiliano had three loves in
his life: his absolutely wonderful wife Lilian + his family he adored, his
music and his farm + animals. He gave me a tour of his new farm, showed me his
special breed pigs, and he then pointed to me his home made bio-gas plant that
provided the household free gas the whole year round! His recycling business
from the hotels too was an ingenious way to reduce waste and simultaneously
recycle plastic, provide food waste for his pigs and compost organic waste for
the plants, etc. We compared notes on cultivating techniques and
energies/renewables, and he confided about his business expansion plans
too.Music aside, the man was a born genius on sustainability and he did it his
own way, the only way he knew - simple, practical, effective - Emiliano's way.I
was shocked when I was told of the news today, like all of us who knew him
closely surely did.Hope we shall remember him for the great contribution he
made to Goan music and hope his great works that he so cherished with his ever
faithful band shall live forever.RIP my dearest friend.Joao Paulo Cota

Re: [Goanet] [Goanet-News] Goanet Reader: Hope is not a strategy: The demand for Mopa (Rahul Basu)‏

2013-06-29 Thread Joao Paulo Cota
This excellent article by Rahul Basu gave a realistic picture about MOPA that
could mean gloom and doom for Goa if this huge project backfires.Evaluating
these future traffic projections, if these are represented graphically, a 3.5m
to 28m would represent an 8 fold traffic increase in simple terms! Analysing
the last 10 years figures and extrapolating this data till 2035, is this really
achievable even then? Most likely not. So, MOPA could easily become a white
elephant project if it does not attain a critical traffic level requirement
when it starts operating. The world economy - its cyclic recessions,
deterioration in foreign traveler’s budgets due to pensions and savings
problems – also would have an effect on (overseas component) traffic
projections. Goa too is not a guaranteed touristic destination in the future,
worldwide competition is intense and tourists always seek better deals and
options. Recent rapes, murders, drugs, Mafia, high crime in Goa does not help
the case…The Indian economy depends upon a lot of work outsourced from the
West. If this work dries up, there would be less inflow of foreign revenues.
The high domestic output cannot sustain itself in twenty years times. Hence
even domestic air travel might not increase to unrealistic levels in the future
due to economic corrections – when a developing economy attains ‘developed’
status.MOPA also needs to be a main hub for some major airline(s) to stamp its
mark in the highly competitive airport market. Airlines too have to balance the
books between fuel efficient aircraft and fuel costs. The trend now seems to be
for wide bodied aircraft. Would MOPA be able to accommodate A350’s A380’s and
Dreamliners? Considering these being fuel efficient, would the high costs
transportation of aircraft fuel to an isolated MOPA be sold at competitive
rates? Who can guarantee that?Having worked at architectural/construction
management level role in large airport projects in the UK, I cannot emphasize
enough the need to careful study, plan, design and finally build it based on
real figures based on real data.So far, all MOPA projections are based on
cuckooland data. And hope! JMOPA airport project would not mean just the
airport building itself. One would also need to take into consideration the
seamless interface with the associated infrastructure thrown into the equation:
roads, bridges, rail, retail, hospitality, etc.Even if that whole
infrastructure is built around MOPA, what would be the impact on the
environment and also on existing tourist infrastructure elsewhere in Goa far
away from MOPA? Who has accessed it properly? And what about that long journey
for the tired overseas tourist, who, after having had a long trip, would be
expected to make yet another long journey from MOPA to anywhere they need to go
to?ICAO's report needs to be carefully studied by a panel of air industry
specialists and Dabolim needs to be looked at again – with the Navy possibly
making its long overdue exit. Goa is too small to cater for two major airports.
Period. A wrong decision could potentially mean a huge economic disaster that
Goa can hardly afford.I sincerely hope these irresponsible ministers involved
in the decision making start putting their electoral and financial
‘projections’ aside, and instead start thinking of better ways to improve life
in Goa. Stepping aside and making room for newer, fresh blood into Goan
politics could be a good start too. It is a part of the evolution process. Kind
regards,Joao Paulo Cota
NB: Remember that Goan minister in the 1980's who went some place (Singapore I
think) and saw traffic lights for the first time in his life? As soon as he had
returned back to Goa, he made sure there were traffic lights all over Panjim
literally overnight. Result? Total gridlock across Panjim. This is the result
when you have irresponsible people in power unqualified to make proper
decisions involving public money. Money that is not theirs to waste.

Re: [Goanet] [Goanet-News] NEWS: Agencies join hands to salvage Goan handicrafts industry (PTI)

2011-03-29 Thread Joao Paulo Cota

Sometimes one wonders if any Government in Goa really have any competent
minister with a bit of 'grey matter up there' to come up with any long term
plans for anything really, not just handricrafts.
Whilst it is not rocket science for any touristic destination to realize that
are tremendous commercial benefits of linking its mainstream industry - tourism
- with the artisan industry, what has the GHRSSIDC been doing then after all
these years?
When I moved to Goa in 1980's, I was involved with this department in a way due
to one of my craft hobbies and I did ask the then department director why can't
this industry, so rich and full of talented people, could not be promoted any
further? Apparently then, there was just one main handicrafts centre in
Bicholim and when I visited them, the crafstmen told me that the Govt hardly
gave them any marketing support. Apparently ministers just come for the
occasional visit and that was it. When I queried with the director what the
Govt's plan was, he just mentioned that there are limited budgets, etc.
However, they were not short for cars and posh furnished offices... but not
with wares from Goa!
With the tourism industry at its saturation stage today and considering the
fact that the Goan handicrafts market being literally flooded with cheaper
Kashmiri, Rajasthani and other North Indian wares - heavily 'subsidized' by the
Kashmiri mafia who use it as a frontline to sell their drugs - won't it now be
a bit of an uphill task for the GHRSSIDC to actually try to achieve what they
are set out to do? Would the Russian mafia tourists, illiterate, uncultured and
ignorant in their vast majority, then the Israeli drug addicts 'military'
tourists - basically, the bulk of foreign Goa tourism today, actually buy these
wares?
It would be an utter disgrace that some of these talented craftsmen I met might
no longer be in the trade, as it would be economically unviable to make a
living under such appaling conditions.
Before these new GHRSSIDC plans are put in place, was any case study made for
this sudden change? Considering now that the local output would be increased,
has the Goverment planned all the other bits - marketing, advertising campaign,
etc? Or would ware just pile up unsold in warehouses?
I hope that these poor artisans and crafstmen won't be victims of yet another
incompetence fiasco, as these are trademarks of certain Govt officials who are
just day dreamers and hardly last a mandate in power.
Would anyone still remember that Goan minister who went to a trip to the Far
East and was so impressed with the traffic lights systems therein that he
literally instructed traffic lights to be implemented across Panjim overnight?
I was one of the many drivers caught in the traffic chaos that soon followed,
as no proper traffic flow analysis was done in the Panjim area. That is a
typical case of Government plans that normally endup in disaster and wastage of
public money.
Hope they can get things right for the Goan Handicrafts. Things would have not
reached the 'salvage' status if moroons and incompetent politicians would have
not been in power for so long.
JP Cota

Thanks for the news.
Just wanted to know if anyone is familiar with an exhaustive Konkani
dictionary written by the late Prof Lourdino Rodrigues from Santa Cruz?
I recall, when I moved to Goa in 1981, both me and my brother had to
learn English and we were lucky to have him as our English teacher (via
Portuguese) for a few months. However, he was very busy writting a major
Konkani work and I not aware if it has ever been published or not. He
was on his last states of writing it, but sadly, on his last stage of
his life too.
The last I heard, his son Tensing Rodrigues was an Economics professor
teaching in Panjim.

Thanks,

Re: [Goanet] NEWS: The "national" media "rediscovers" Goa... Comment in India Today

2010-10-30 Thread Joao Paulo Cota

Aroon Purie,
Nice article that highlights the real current situation in Goa.
However, everyone should realize that if Goa needs to be clean, it is
just not for the benefit of tourists who want to come down and hopt to
have a great time.

Goans too like cleanliness, like it existed in the good old Portuguese
times, but most of the filth currently present in Goan beaches have been
attributed to Indian tourists. The last time my family visited Calangute
beach, we just had to retract our steps as there were all sorts of dirt
on the sand and it was just unsafe to walk amongst the debris on it. We
decided to observe for a while and clearly saw with our own eyes Indian
tourists spitting pan on the beach, throwing bottles and other rubbish
all over the place with total disregard to any civilized rules. Surely
they would never do that in their backyard, wherever they may be in
Hindustan.

Average Goans, Hippies and general Western tourists have manners and
take care wherever they go.

Perhaps the challenge would be to fine these filthy fellow citizens that
come to Goa, pollute it and then go back to their native places - only
to then comment on how bad the state of Goa is. These people should
clean up what they leave behind else they should be welcome - not - to Goa.

Goa does not need to be more 'Indianized' than already it has been. All
corruption and sleeze have been Indian imports that then allowed foreign
imports like drugs and prostitution to flourish.
On insight, if the Portuguese would have been in Goa till date, things
would definitely different today. Probably not as developed, but
definitely not as corrupt and filthy!

And these filthy Indian tourists would have accounted then for a lot of
extra revenue to the local exchequer!

Re: [Goanet] Goanet Reader: Pious Outrage over Commonwealth Games Shame (Madhu Kishwar, Manushi)

2010-10-02 Thread Joao Paulo Cota

Dear Prof Kishwar,

Many thanks for your absolutely superb and well researched article.
It is obvious that most people share your view on India's way of life,
as documented by you.

I have no doubts that however rich India might be someday, it will
never, ever, ever be at par with any Western nation in terms of quality
of life.

In the time I lived in Goa, fully 'Indinized' now, I have never found
any aspect of life where corruption was not involved. That was not the
case under Portuguese rule. Even on the day I have returned back to
Europe, I had to pay a police clearance certificate, and I was asked by
the non-Goan Goa Police desk clerk if I could add a 20 rupee note (some
pocket money in 1994) to the 5 rupees fee! To that, I have just replied
that when I would return to visit Goa, I would definitely get him some
bubblegum. To which he nodded happily!

As the rich get richer and more powerful, as the police and government
departments get more greedy, corruption will never be stamped out as
without it, these so called 'leaders' would never be in their 'richie
league' and would just be nobodys - like the vast illiterate people who
elect them to power. Many times, many of these are paid to exercise
their 'democratic' right!

Sad, such a huge nation with endless resources to make it amongst the
league of great nations... but as corruption will never be stamped out,
it is doomed to be just another nation where it might throw in their
weight in world issues, but will never call the shots and pride itself
in being a place anyone would be happy to live in. A place where the
rich would not care if they have to bulldoze a few slums to make way for
a nice garden... overlooking yet more slums!

Kind regards,

Re: [Goanet] [Goanet-News] CONTROVERSY: Costs and benefits -- Goa's NRI Commission, expenses and activities

2010-07-16 Thread Joao Paulo Cota

Hello,

Firstly thanks Aires for obtaining - as you always do at the end - details that
one would never think they would be ever known to the common man.

Whilst I have my reservations on the actual efficiency of this NRI cell, I did
note a few things on the expenses list that would need further clarification.
For example, both Director and Commissioner went to the Toronto Convention.
Their details are as below:

> 3. Eduardo Faleiro, Commissioner for NRI Affairs
> Canada
> July 21-Aug. 01, 2008
> To attend International Goan Convention 2008 in Toronto from
> 23rd to 27th July 2008
> Rs 8,89,514=00
>
> 4. U. D. Kamat, Director for NRI Affairs
> Canada
> July 21-Aug. 01, 2008
> To attend International Goan Convention 2008 in Toronto from
> 23rd to 27th July 2008
> Rs 2,33,364=00

Both men spend the same amount of time there, but why are Faleiro's expenses be
nearly FOUR times more than Kamat? Isn't this a conference when they sit,
listen, talk and the only 'work' involved isn't just to sit down and go through
notes? So, what are these extra expenses for?

Again both these officers plus the Chairman toured the Gulf in 2007. Once more
Faleiro's expenses are many times higher than the other officers. Why? Can he
explain why such a huge disparity in expenses?

> 2. Eduardo Faleiro, Commissioner for NRI Affairs

If one looks at the sheer amount of domestic flights, and the staggering
amounts of money involved, one just wonders, if the same job could have been
done over the phone/internet and with minimal travelling. Have these people
ever heard of video-conferencing, Skype perhaps? I am not equating their
attitud to arrogant British MP's buying duck houses or porn at the cost of
public expense, but general Goan public could surely benefit for all the money
saved by overspending of these greedy 'men in power'.

With austerity affecting virtually every local Goverment in the world, it does
look like nothing seems to affect the budgets of the Goa Government and its
subsidiary agencies!

I am not a Goan taxpayer but all these figures can make any Goan overseas
wonder if all these officers should be sent for a special crash course on
efficiency, austerity and discipline to maximize work and minimize expenses -
and have an overseeing body watching over their shoulder afterwards.

And I wonder how many times all these 'men in power' turn up at work at 9am
every working day!

Aires, fancy some more investigative work? :-) Keep up the pressure my good
friend, everyone will eventually realize they will not get away with murder...
at least without being exposed first!

Kind regards,

Re: [Goanet] Traditional Eco-Friendly Sao Joao to be held at Salvador do Mundo.

2010-06-17 Thread Joao Paulo Cota
Sometimes we have to examine the usage of the word 'Eco' with a bit more
insight.

People may try eating a few traditional things on a coconut shell for
that function only; after they go back home, they will carry on eating
on plastic or glass ware regardless. Can't really blame anyone, it is
just too impractical to use coconut shells for eating.

Also, if everyone ate their meals on banana leaves, a simple maths
exercise would easily prove this to be an unsustainable practise and
that there would be no banana trees left in India in no time. And with
less photosynthesis, I wonder where on earth the bananas would get their
nutrients

What would make 'Eco' sense would be to recreate the old practises of
packing food into simple, non plastic packaging. If people would take
jars/cloth bags to the local shops to get them refilled with grains,
rice, veggies, etc. then it would make more sense. A step further, once
could grow own vegetables on back gardens, reuse rain water, compost,
insulate houses sensibly, use more solar/wind energy and turn kitchen
bottles upside down for that 'last drop' when they are nearly finished!
Even designed my Porvorim flat so that the breeze alone with just two
windows open, ventilates the whole area without any need of any fans.

I would call al this a proper usage of the word 'Eco'.

JP

Here in London, there are a couple of restaurants they are Goan and have Goan

non-Goans...

Interesting enough, same brand of non-Goans are the first to rush for Hindi
