[Goanet] SENIOR CITIZENS' BALCAO

2019-09-13 Thread S Y
SENIOR CITIZENS' BALCAO

Focus of today's Friday Balcao open discussions,
Issues & Challenges in Goa facing Senior Citizens

Anchored by omnipresent Roland Martins,
Sensitive inputs from participating senior citizens

By 2030 there will be a massive increase in Goa's 60+ age population,
Besides locals, there will be many more relocating to Goa as retirement
destination

Issues related to health, mobility & security of senior citizens,
Awareness in families related to home-care of senior citizens

Police, Fire &
Emergency Services,
Social Welfare
& Health Services

All need to be equipped to face challenges,
Due to increase in senior citizen population indices

Need also for coordinated efforts by non governmental agencies,
The Consumer Forums, Service Clubs, Self Help Groups & Housing Societies

Village Panchayats, Municipal Councils & Educational Institutions,
All can help in tackling issues & challenges faced by senior citizens

But most important issue & challenge for each senior citizen,
Is to live a life full of adventure & joyous exploration

Taking care of one's own health & well-being,
Is greatest gift to community & family living

Focus not on departure mode or coffin designer,
Focus thoughts on living every moment healthier & happier

If you can move & have sufficient choices,
Stop being dependent on external resources

It's your life, take care of it yourself,
Build community links to nurture yourself

You gave your best to your family in your prime,
No regrets or apologies while you now enjoy your time

HE gave you life, to fight, survive & live in His own image,
HE will create & destroy, so don't worry about your lineage

You will go when it's time for you to go,
Before that, thank Him & go with the flow

At the end of it all, you will leave everything behind,
So live it up, sing, dance, romance & to yourself be kind

[Goanet] WIDOWS' TRAVAILS

2019-06-13 Thread S Y
WIDOWS' TRAVAILS

Patrilocal residence,
Patrilineal inheritance

Mourning rites,
Property rights

Intimidation, silence
Exploitation, violence

Segregation, malnourishment,
Discrimination, ill-treatment

Ignorance, economic plight,
Sati, disembellishment right

Head shorn, draped in a white saree,
Age old image of widowed bhartiya naari

Indian family as a social institution is well known for the emotional and
physical support that it provides for its extended members,
But it often stigmatizes widows as women who failed to safeguard their
husband’s life & hence consigns them to the pyre ambers

Under ancient law, her husband is God & when he dies, she is expected to
manifest inconsolable grief for the rest of her life,
So many widows even today struggle to get socio-economic or emotional
support in their hour of distress and strife

If a widow has adult sons, she may get inheritance rights, it but if she is
childless or has only daughters, she faces problems,
Although Hindu succession Act, 1969 made women eligible to inherit equally
with men, yet many widows are deprived & treated as bad omens

When the husband dies, many widows have no freedom to “return” to the
parental home,
They remain in the husband's house despite conflicts & torture over land &
property dome

While the rest of India still quivers under the burden of regressive
attitudes against widows due to illness & old age,
The high rates of accident & alcohol related deaths account for high number
of widows in many a Goan village

Many widowed mothers unable to attend their own children’s weddings due to
social 'refuse',
Their dare to wear colourful clothes & jewellery, makes them victims of
gossip, pressure & abuse

The psychological effects of the husband's death are worsened by society
trying to deny them everything,
Community's self-appointed judges believe in traditions that aggravate
depression beyond cycle of grieving,
Be it the lifelong 'white' Hindu diktat or the Catholic norm of 3 years of
widows wearing black clothing

Many uneducated widows in Goa usually get a raw deal, being duped out of
property by 'family' without any social outrage,
Education, employment, own savings aside from their husbands’ & supportive
families of both spouses can give widows courage

Many widows have little knowledge of their legal rights under Uniform Civil
Code exclusive to Goan women,
The code entitles the widow to her husband’s share of the property & also
to half the share of her children

Widowhood in India still continues to be akin to a socially imposed death,
Compelled to wear the garb of piety & draw solace from God for every breath

Coerced to live a life devoid of any happiness, comfort and companionship,
The option of remarriage is eliminated to ensure perpetuation of their
hardship

Many widows have to deal with discrimination ridiculous,
Within their own families, many are labelled as inauspicious

To exercise full ownership rights by inheritance a widow has to be
literate, courageous & mobile,
Many are completely unequipped to deal with bureaucracy & lawyers due to
poor educational profile

Lord Raj Loomba founded the Loomba Foundation after experiencing suffering
of his own mother who became a widow on June 23 at 37 years of age,
And has since been driven to uplift the social & economic status of widows
in India and other developing countries with his positive message

International Widows Day, recognized on June 23, 2010 by United Nations,
Marked annually to bring attention to the rights of widows & their
violations

The Loomba Foundation led the campaign for the formal establishment of a
day dedicated to widows,
2010 study had 245 million widows globally, of whom 115 million stared at
abject poverty windows

Almost a decade later, many widows still suffer much the same all over the
world,
Besides the loss of the loved one, they cope with injustice & abuses at
them hurled

They continue to bear with stigmatisation, sexual abuse & deprivation of
their rightful inheritance,
Many even today are accused of witchcraft & murdered or left to deal with
economic duress penance

Vital to see how to make this June 23 different,
Time to think how not to be callous or indifferent

Time to reach out to the marginalised widow,
Vital to bring sunshine to her lonely window

Time to strengthen her in her time of sorrow,
Time to empower her for the uncertain tomorrow

Time to let her choose her path precious,
Vital to treat her as more than just auspicious

Time to treat her as equal human,
Worthy of love, dignity & compassion

Time to help her reclaim her identity,
Time for us all to share this responsibility

And Dr Meenakshi Martins' insightful address valedictory

Thanks to organisers of week-long 'gender sensitisation' course at HRDC
-Goa University,
Practical knowledge with meaningful interaction between participants &
faculty

Wonderful, osmotic learning experience,
In 'gender sensitisation' churning ambience

Behavioral psychology describes three major types of learning,
Classical conditioning, operant conditioning & observational learning

The process of learning never stops, but rather is always ongoing,
As stimulus conditions change, so too will behavior & understanding

A girl or woman is not a lesser mortal,
Society can't treat her as silent chattel

Ignore the woman of substance at your own peril,
But dare not try to mess with her against her will

Girls & women were not born to just present bouquets or look decorative,
Both men & women must understand that choice is every human's prerogative

Just 'Chool & Mool' cannot reinforce a woman's destiny,
Women have miles to travel for 'glass ceiling' mutiny

Women must move beyond just filling in everyone else's blanks,
About time they enjoy multiple choice questions with thanks

Men & women must both learn, unlearn and relearn the joys of 'gender
sensitisation',
For there can be no real progress without a balanced gender equation

Media must portray & empower more positive role models of women,
Regressive dialogues in films reflect patronizing psyche & acumen

Both genders must bat, bowl and field fairly,
None must misuse their unique powers unfairly

Vital both men & women become torch-bearers of gender parity,
And light the inter-generational gender lamp of equal opportunity

2019-03-15 Thread S Y
CONFERENCE ON WRCD - WORLD CONSUMER RIGHTS DAY

Conference organized to create awareness on World Consumer Rights Day,
Roland Martin's anchoring with focus on relevant practical solutions all
the way

Dr. G. Shaber Ali, Director, Consumer Clinic, V.M. Salgaonkar College of
Law gave the opening keynote address,
Theme of World Consumer Rights Day "Trusted Smart Products" wonderfully
explained through his presentation humorous

>From smart phones to smart TVs many of the products we use are increasingly
becoming connected by default,
Globally, there are currently 23.1 billion smart products in the world,
outnumbering people three to one assault

Smart products are connected to the internet and receive, collect and send
data,
More people will come online across the world as internet connectivity
becomes better

Faster, smart products will become more of a day-to-day reality for
consumers everywhere,
Marking a major change in the way many consumers interact with products &
services anywhere

The emergence of smart technology brings many opportunities for each
consumer,
Access to new services, more responsive products with choice & convenience
greater

However there is significant concern around issues of accountability, lack
of security, privacy & meaningful choice over how we use them,
There are also issues around lack of access, with millions of people
globally locked out of this new technology by overly high data charges
imposed on them

Keynote address was followed by presentations by Richard Noronha,
designated officer & Licensing Authority, North Goa, Directorate of Food
and Drugs Administration & Ranjan Borkar, Asst. Controller, North Zone and
Dept. Of Legal Metrology,
Also by Vaibhav Bhagat, Asst. Manager, LPG-HP Gas, HPCL & Parijat Shukla &
Prabjoyt Dahikar, Scientists, Bureau of Indian Standards, each explaining
their respective issues and redressal methodology

Aptly designed cartoon by renowned Goan cartoonist Alexyz released during
the conference
Alerting us all 'not to assume what we consume to be genuine but to check
it out & clear the doubt'

The aim of WRCD is to celebrate solidarity within the international
consumer rights movement,
The day is organized by Consumers International (CI) that serves as global
voice independent

>From 'Caveat Emptor' regimes to time now for providers of services &
products to beware of buyers' rights,
World Consumer Rights Day ensures respect to consumers & the need for their
protection highlights

2019-03-07 Thread S Y
DOWN THE RABBIT HOLE: RESEARCH ADVENTURES IN MALAWI AND GOA

Xavier Centre for Historical Research's History Hour presentation followed
by discussion,
With 'Down the Rabbit Hole: Research Adventures in Malawi and Goa' writer
Debra Nicholson

In 2014, she travelled to India for the first time and was captivated by
the indescribable onslaught,
Of sensory, emotional, spiritual, mental and intellectual challenges this
amazing country brought

Since 2016, her pursuit of this story has taken her from Bowling Green,
Ohio, USA to Canada,
Onward to London & Malawi, & now she is looking to meet Malwaian & other
East African Goans in Goa

When a talking rabbit runs by you, you have a few options,
You either attribute the experience to an overactive imagination

Or you suppose it is a vision meant for someone else,
Or you follow it down the rabbit hole & see what the chase tells

When fiction writer Debra Nicholson unexpectedly encountered an unknown
story,
She jumped to explore the April 19, 1976 story about Malawi Goans' history

Today she shared her experiences of that journey with the diverse audience
at XCHR,
Highlighting the learning that comes from hoping for miracles till the very
last hour

Discovering the power of serendipity & its chance encounters,
Accepting when sought destination does not provide any answers

Yet believing in the cause and purpose of the decision,
And continuing to unravel every aspect of the mission

Tasting more success with present Goan audience,
Than 'failed' research attempts across African distance

Each experience a stepping stone to better access,
Each so-called failure a part of the strengthening process

The destination cannot be judged by the journey's cost,
All those who explore and wander are never lost

Your search may not lead you to something you were looking for,
Columbus & Vasco de Gama discovered more than what they were looking for

Life is all about seeking & exploring the unknown,
For you never know when you may reach paradise home-grown

The excitement is in unravelling the silent history,
The adventure is in unfolding the unknown mystery

VIVA CARNIVAL

Goa Carnival has been celebrated since 18th century as a precursor to the
abstinence of Lent,
Huge colourful parades with bands, floats & dances mark this 'eat, drink &
be merry' festive event

The word 'Carnival' is derived from a Latin word meaning 'to take away
meat',
And refers to 40-day period of Lent fasting & abstinence from rich food
treat

The legendary King Momo takes over & streets come alive with face masks,
festoons, music & colour,
Making the Carnival a time of unbridled merry-making with singing, dancing,
fun & festive flavour

All major streets of Goa come alive with graceful dances, strumming of
guitars & lively processions,
Vibrant acrobats, brass bands, dancers, fire eaters & jesters perform as
part of festive celebrations

Being a blend of local & Portuguese culture, Goa Carnival is known for
spreading joy and happiness,
Doses of Feni alongwith variety of sumptuous local food add to the fun of
this carnival's joyousness

The four-day Goa Carnival began along the seashore today,
With the main float parade on Miramar to Dona Paula pathway

Colourful buntings, confetti, balloons, Icecream carts, food hawkers & kids
cycling with hooters,
Locals and foreign tourists thronging the streets guarded ably by our very
own police officers

The main tableau of King Momo themed on the 'Sea God' with a peacock crown
head gear,
'Observe Cleanliness' message by William Anes-event enthusiast, chosen to
be King Momo this year

The festival educated people on traffic discipline & drinking alcohol with
responsibility,
A traffic police float was highlight of Carnival parade alongwith floats of
many a community

'Life doesn't have a reset button', 'drive safely', urged banners on
traffic police float team,
Showcasing road signs & breath analyser models & urging to join Traffic
Sentinel scheme

Teachers and students of Sunshine Worldwide School heralded their theme
We are humane, global, competent and live our unconditionally happy dream

Traditional occupations and culture highlighted by many floats that
followed,
Grain sifting, bamboo use, poie & undo, pork & salami, ghumot & tabla echoed

'Keep our rivers clean' floats displayed fishing nets taking out plastic
garbage,
'Dangers of alcoholism' stressed 'destiny or death is in your hands' message

'Save water, save life', 'Avoid negligence in aboundance' urged Boys from
Ponda,
Traditional products and Sao Jao Ave, Ave, Ave, come on let's sing urged
Stars of Ponda

'Go green', 'say no to plastic', 'ensure fresh fish in Goa', 'conserve
nature', 'save trees',
Conserve our paradise and request tourists not to litter garbage bottles on
beaches

Wonderful messages by youth from Merces, Calangute, Benaulim, Curtorim &
other parts,
Also message of thanks to Goans by Kerala Sangammam for being 'friend in
deed' during floods

But most spirited show of strength on NAB & DRAG banners with questions'
pun,
We are differently abled, promote inclusion, why should we not be part of
the fun

Where is braille signage, don't judge disability by its visibility,
As every part is vital for body, we are also vital for society

Goa Carnival is all about celebration of our living culture of music, dance
& tradition,
It has nothing to do with over- indulgence in wine, garbage & cultural
renunciation

Wonderful kaleidoscope of Goan culture traditional and contemporary,
Viva Goa Carnival for its joie de vivre & its social messaging exemplary

So keep up the preservation of our inherited traditions,
For that is the basic ethos of our indian cultural diversifications

[Goanet] GENEVA CONVENTION

2019-03-02 Thread S Y
GENEVA CONVENTION

A series of international diplomatic meetings that produced a number of
agreements,
Geneva Convention originated in 1864 and was significantly updated in 1949
after World War II remnants

For much of mankind’s history,
Wars were 'hit or miss' mystery

Some showed compassion for the injured or innocent civilian,
While others tortured or slaughtered anyone in the war pavilion

In 1859, Henry Dunant travelled to Emperor Napoleon III’s northern Italy
Headquarters to seek land rights for business venture,
But saw human suffering post Battle of Solferino-Second War of Italian
Independence & its gory aftermath impacted him forever

He wrote a first-hand account in 1862 and also proposed concrete solution,
That all nations come together to offer the war-wounded, assistance
humanitarian

In 1863, military medical personnel discussed wartime agreement terms
humanitarian,
This meeting & its resultant treaty signed by 12 nations is known as First
Geneva Convention

Henry Dunant played an important role in progression of what became the
International Committee of the Red Cross,
His work as champion for battle-wounded & prisoners of war also won him the
first Nobel Peace Prize

In 1906, 35 countries met to review & update terms of First Geneva
Convention,
For wounded/captured & volunteers/medicos, the new amendments extended
protection

The 1906 Convention replaced the First Geneva Convention of 1864,
Repatriation of captured belligerents was recommended, but mandatory no more

After World War I, it was clear the 1906 Convention and The Hague
Convention of 1907 didn’t go far enough,
In 1929 updates made for all prisoners to be treated with compassion & live
in conditions humane, not rough

1929 Convention also established International Red Cross as the main
neutral organization,
Responsible for 'prisoners of war and the wounded or killed' data
collection & transmission

During World War II Germany both within military prison camps & civilian
concentration camps, Germany violated 1929 Convention rules laid,
So 1949 Geneva Conventions gave Red Cross the right to protect/assist
non-combatant civilians & provide wounded/sick with humanitarian aid

Article 12 stipulated the wounded & sick must not be murdered, tortured,
exterminated or exposed to biological experiments,
Rules also added that prisoners of war must not be tortured or mistreated &
Red Cross has right to examine their living arrangements

In 1977, Protocol I added to increase protections for civilians, military
workers and journalists during international armed conflicts,
It also banned use of weapons that cause superfluous injury or unnecessary
suffering or widespread, long-term & severe 'natural environment' deficits

Protocol II was established because most victims of armed conflicts since
the 1949 Convention were victims of vicious civil wars,
It stated all people not taking up arms be treated humanely & there should
never be an order by anyone in command for “no survivors"

In 2005, a Protocol was created to recognize the symbol of the red crystal,
alongwith the red cross, red shield of David & red crescent,
So that they act as universal emblems of identification & protection in
armed conflicts against battlefield behaviors heinous & indecent

Over 190 states follow the Geneva Conventions because damaging battlefield
behaviors harm the entire international community,
The rules help draw a line within context of wars & armed conflicts,
between humane treatment & unrestrained brutality

It is said that everything is fair in love and war,
But human dignity at all times needs be kept at par

The release of POW under Geneva Convention may be delayed,
But courage & spirit of bravehearts cannot be betrayed

[Goanet] WAR THEORY & HISTORY

2019-02-28 Thread S Y
WAR THEORY & HISTORY

A war is typically fought by a country or group of countries against an
opposing country,
Wars can also be fought within a country in the form of a war civil or
revolutionary

War is a state of armed conflict, a state of competition or hostility,
Or a sustained campaign against an undesirable situation or activity

Wars have been fought for thousands of years of human history,
And become increasingly destructive with advancing technology

Experts claim there is rarely one single, clear cause of conflict and war
escalation,
The many reasons for conflict can intertwine in a complicated culmination

Causes of war could be economic/territorial gain, nationalism/religion,
And include Civil/Revolutionary/Defensive War or revenge/retribution

There is usually an economic motive underlying most conflicts global,
Even if the stated aim of the war is presented as something more noble

Wars fought for Economic Gain include Anglo-Indian Wars (1766-1849) that
gave Britain unrestricted access to valuable resources of Indian
subcontinent,
And the Finnish-Soviet War or "The Winter War" (1939-1940) when Stalin
wanted to mine nickel & Soviet Union waged war on Finland when it did not
consent

Wars for Territorial Gain are fought for more land or for use of territory
as “buffer zones” between two hostile enemies with distrust,
Proxy wars are 'buffer zone' conflicts fought indirectly between opposing
powers in a 3rd country to suit logistical, military & economic interest

Territorial wars include Mexican-American War (1846-1848) fought following
annexation of Texas, with Mexico still claiming the land as their own,
And Serbo-Bulgarian War (1885-1886) fought over a small border town, after
the river creating the border between the countries moved contention bone,
Also Arab-Israeli War or "Six Day War" (1967-1988) Israeli forces took the
territories of the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, from Jordan

Religious conflicts have deep roots that lie dormant for decades, only to
re-emerge in a flash at a later date for supposed aspersions' cast,
Religious wars can often be tied to other reasons for conflict, such as
nationalism or revenge for a perceived historical slight in the past

The Crusades (1095-1291) were a series of wars sanctioned by Latin Church
during medieval age to expel Islam & spread Christianity,
Thirty Years' War (1618-1648) was sparked when Holy Roman Emperor Ferdinand
II tried to impose Roman Catholicism on
Protestant community

Lebanese Civil War (1975-1990) sparked from conflicts between Sunni Muslim,
Shiite Muslim & Christian Lebanese populations,
Yugoslav Wars (1991-1995) consisted of Croatian War & Bosnian War and
fought between orthodox Catholic & former Yugoslavia's Muslim populations,
Second Sudanese Civil War (1983-2005) was ethnoreligious war caused by
Muslim central government's choice to impose sharia law on non-muslim
southern populations

Many wars are fought for nationalism translated into invasion & subjugation,
Racism & imperialism intent reflected in Hitler's attempt for supremacy &
domination

Chichimeca War (1550-1590) fought during Spanish conquest of Aztec
civilization in modern day Mexico,
Extreme loyalty & patriotism caused many countries to become involved in
the 1914-1918 First World War scenario

Seeking to punish, redress a grievance, or simply strike back for perceived
slight can be a factor in the waging of war retaliatory,
Revenge also relates to patriotism when people wronged are motivated to
fight back with pride & nationalism spirit for their country

In World War II (1939-1945), rise of Nazi Socialist Party & Germany's
eventual domination of Europe were direct results of Treaty of Versailles
punishing,
Global War on Terror prompted by September 11 attacks on World Trade Center
in 2001 began with an invasion of Iraq & is still continuing & ongoing

Civil Wars take place when there is sharp internal disagreement within a
country about who rules, how country should be run or people's rights,
Many of these internal rifts turn into chasms that result in fights between
two or more opposing groups can also spark off separatists

American Civil War (1861-1865) fought by Union army & Confederate army was
a result of long-standing controversy over slavery,
In Russian Civil War (1917-1923) post Russian Revolution, the Red Army &
White Army vied to determine Russia's political imagery

Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) fought between left-leaning Republicans and
the aristocratic conservative Nationalists,
Korean War (1950-1953) fought between North Korea & South Korea
respectively supported by China & United States

Revolutionary Wars occur when large section of population revolts against
individual or group that rules the country when dissatisfied with its
leadership,
Other revolutions sparked by unpopular wars with other nations or perceived
injustices by ruling group or by those suffering extreme economic hardship

Portuguese Restoration War (1640-1668) revolu

With or without redemption or prohibition

The author also shared his understanding of current situations-
In Bihar, in the Valley and of the approaching elections

Straightforward talk by Roving Editor of 'The Telegraph',
Speaking with sensitivity about 'sui-rui', 'debris' & 'epitaph'

Insightful, thought-provoking 'patrakar' interaction,
Wonderful 'old school' pensive, reflective discussion
