The inaugural function of the Post Graduate Department for the Academic Year

Dr. (Fr.) Walter de Sa delivered the welcome address and observed that the
educational system in India is undergoing a change of Creativity and Innovation
with
Mr. Kapil Sibal, Minister, HRD, initiating this change. Fr. de Sa, reiterated

[Goanet] Information .Formation.Transformation

2009-04-09 Thread St. Xavier's College - Mapusa - Goa - India - 403507 (TEL: 0832-2262356 WEBSITE: www.xavierscollege-goa.com)

Remembering Aquino Braganca (b. 6 April 1924), who fought for freedom
of the former Portuguese colonies in Africa. An online tribute
 http://aquinobraganca.wordpress.com/ (includes many historical
 references, some photographs and documents)

Information .Formation.Transformation

A two day Faculty Enrichment Programme (FEP) was held at St. Xavier's College,
Mapusa, Goa on 19th and 20th March, 2009. The theme for the programme was
EDUCATION TO PEACE AND COMMUNIAL HARMONY. The Resource person was Dr. (Fr.)
Jerry
Rosario, S.J. from Chennai (T.N.).

Dr. Rosario has a doctorate in Political Theology and a degree in Civil Law.
He is
a socio-pastoral animator and an activist whose area of work is with the dalits
in
India. He is a visiting professor in thirty-five institutions and has lectured
in
forty-three countries. Dr. Rosario has authored fifty four books for
undergraduate
and university students. He is the founder of JEPASA, DHANAM and MANITHAM.

'DO NOT LEAVE THE WORLD THE WAY YOU FOUND IT' - the AICUF motto, turned around
Dr.
Rosario's life into a 'Mission'. With this stirring statement, Dr. Rosario
introduced the concept of education. He raised some thought provoking
questions/statements on the true essence of education. Education, he stressed,
is
an ongoing process that should challenge us to change and grow. Often 'a
moment of
crisis is a moment of change'. The better approach to education is to
encourage
questions. In keeping with Socratic thinking, he said: Answers can only
inform..
Questions form. Education should, therefore, provoke students to question,
stir
their imagination for a 'new future', generate awareness of the present, and an
analysis of the past through re-reading of the past historically and
structurally.
This awareness would then result in the animation of students, to develop a
fresh
outlook that would enthuse and empower them into action for a positive
transformation of society. These above components of the education process
operate
within the six societal systems i.e. social, political and economic systems
which
are the 'basic systems' and cultural, religious and ideological systems which
are
meaning systems. Education then is 'Information' that leads to 'Formation'
of
self, and results in 'Transformation' of society for the better.

The group-sharing that followed focused on the introductory session on
education and
on the challenge for change that may have inspired the participants. The
feedback
from participants affirmed that Dr. Rosario was an enthusiastic speaker, with a
clear vision and deep convictions. His insights were inspiring and enriching,
examples very factual and down-to-earth, and all this was effectively
communicated
with much wit and humour in a style that was endearing to all.

The challenges that inspired the teachers included: introducing value added
teaching in the classroom situation, rewriting our scripts, treating each year
as a
new year, encouraging the spirit of enquiry in students, encouraging
spiritualism
rather than materialism, promoting responsible citizenship and sensitivity to
the
needs and rights of 'the other', becoming good role models for the students.
In
short, the faculty members agreed on the principle that 'we had to be the
change we
want to see in our students'.

Introducing the theme of peace and communal harmony, Dr. J. Rosario related the
little known life story of the childhood of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar. Through it, he
highlighted the definitive role played by a teacher in shaping the destiny of
the
students. Education needs to look at holistic formation where religion and
class
should not matter. Religion should help unite us in terms of our focus and
help us
achieve our goals. We need to identify the needy, marginalized students and
make
their concerns an important priority. Institutions of education need to
reconsider
their elitist approach to academic excellence.

Dr. Rosario focused on the negative aspects of communal disharmony and
peaceless
societies where violence was the order of the day. He stressed on the fact
that
these reactions always have a cause that needs to be questioned. Using
examples of
Krishna and Jesus, he laid emphasis on the need to stand up for the Truth
without
seeking personal gain.

Every reaction follows a spiral of violence. The spiral begins with
'Suppression'
and 'Oppression' as a result of the denial of human rights, communalism,
malnutrition, etc. This is followed by the stage of 'Demonstration' where a
revolt
takes place against suppression. The next stages are 'Repression' and
'Progression'.
Progression heralds a new consciousness where change has brought about peace
and
harmony coupled

Our Goa University deserves The BEST
  --
Newman Fernandes

It was always the dream of a small state like Goa to have its own
apex educational Centre, rather than to depend on a University from a
neighbouring state. Goa University was established in Goa to serve
primarily the interests of Goa and Goans and it has worked for their
benefit. When I say Our Goa University deserves the best the
underlying statement is that our students deserve the best.

When a lifetime opportunity is available to an individual or to an
organization, everybody is happy since it provides a lifeline to move
forward with determination in a highly competitive world. The word
everybody is used in a broader sense, since there may be some who,
out of jealousy, or due to an axe to grind, or petty politics, are
disappointed and wish that such a lucky opportunity should not have
been made available. This may be due to some unpleasant experience or
misunderstanding.

Support for higher education

The announcement of the Central Government to support higher
education in India with funds to an extent so far never made
available, brought a smile on the faces of pro-education people. The
Prime Minister during his recent short trip to Goa, labelled the XI
Plan as the Education Plan. It was indeed a shot in the arm! A large
number of initiatives have been planned and some have already been
executed, in favour of higher education. One of them was the
establishment of Central Universities in those states where they had
not been earlier instituted.

The main characteristics of a Central University include its
establishment through an Act of Parliament, decision making bodies
with wide representation, generous funding and greater autonomy.
Central University is a university funded by the Centre. It is not a
stereotype model to be replicated mechanically. Some Central
Universities are residential others are not; some don't affiliate
colleges, while others do; some came into existence as Central
Universities and others were upgraded from State Universities to
central Universities; some are doing extremely well, while others are
lagging behind.

Goa and Central University

The UPA Government in its generosity selected Goa as one of the
recipients of large scale central funds. To understand the scheme of
funding better, one must note that Goa University will receive 11
crores from Central Government for the five years of the XI Plan
while a central University would receive around 160 crores for the
same period. If funds are available, one can have better and
additional infrastructure, advanced technology, more teachers and
better paid luminaries, variety of courses that respond to the needs
of the market and to the stirrings of the soul, course marketing,
highly paid guest faculty, initiatives to sustain growth and
progress etc. As the common man says the rich grow richer the Goa
University would have a chance to grow qualitatively and quantitatively.

Upgradation of Goa University

The Government of Goa accepted this gift and proposed that Goa
University should be the recipient of these funds with its
upgradation to Central University. And rightly so! Being unable to
provide equivalent funds, the best option for the Goa Government was
to welcome with open hands the central offer. I also appreciate the
initiative of our Government to offer a platform for discussions
about the considerations to be weighed at the time of upgradation.

No state university can excel without adequate funding. Even
competent and renowned faculty will desert the sinking ship and
accelerate the deterioration. A vicious cycle sets in thereafter.

There cannot be progress when there is no autonomy. One cannot bind a
person with fetters of iron shackles and ask him to run! At present,
Goa University has to obtain NOC from the Government even to appoint
a peon. Though this is an anachronism, unfortunately it is a reality.

In many states a University is treated as a fiefdom of the ruling
party and subjected to political interferences at the drop of a hat.
It is very difficult to excel under these circumstances. Fortunately,
our Chief Minister is determined to put education in the hands of
educationists.

When we express adverse remarks regarding a University, this refers
to the specific people who work in the University. They may need
correction. Why should the University suffer? And this definitely
translates into why should our students suffer?

Claim for central funds

We will be sounding the death knell for Goa University and choke it
to death if we ignore its claim or of its students to central funds
through upgradation and suggest the establishment of another
University in Goa during the XI Plan. The good must not be made an
enemy of the probable best and not even the best. Just

What you do is what defines you.

The third two-day Commerce Fest ARENA, organized by the Department of
Commerce of St. Xavier's College, is all set to take off on 5th
December, 2007, in the College Campus. Arena 2007-2008 has as its
central theme, What you do is what defines you. The main purpose
of the fest is to inculcate a spirit of teamwork, enthusiasm and
competition amongst Commerce students in order to prepare them to
face the dynamic corporate environment.

The first competition will be the NUMERO UNO. In today's fast paced,
aggressive corporate world, every company vies to be the best in its
field. However, to succeed in business, one needs intelligence and a
good personality to back it up. Hence, this event is a test of the
participants' skills to achieve success. Numero Uno goes along the
lines of the CAT examination. WIZARD OF ADS gives the participants a
platform to showcase their skills in the field of
advertising. Creativity and innovative thinking are the prime
requirements for success. In NOUVELLE AVENTURE participants have to
conceptualize, present and convince a panel of venture capitalists
about an innovative business idea for a product or a serivce that
wuold be economically and practically viable.

BRAIN DRAIN is a straight forward even testing knowledge on various
commerce related aspects ranging from general knowledge to CEO to
mergers. It consists of two round, an initial eliminatory written
round followed by a three tiered finale. NEWSPAPER puts the
participants in the drivers' seat allowing them to construct an ideal
newspaper of their choice keeping in mind current events, good taste
and strong commercial skills. PRINT AD tests the participants'
capability to market a product and to make a favourable and lasting
impression on the judge. MODEL MAKING is a competition based on the
Boston Consultancy Group Matrix. The main aim of this event is to
conceptualize the given theory. COAT OF ARMS is an event which
provides a platform for demonstrating the requirements for success
through the designing of a logo. A logo is a form of communication
and companies are often recognized more by their logo, than by their
name. STOCK SHOCK is based on the traditional trading scenario of
the stock market. This provides an opportunity t o the participants
to prove themselves in share trading.

The overall winners of ARENA 2006-2007, last year were St. Aloysius
College, Mangalore. The College wishes to expose students to higher
levels of competition and help them realize what is expected of their
performance in relation to modern day trade commerce. This indeed
can be the foundation for students to scale greater heights in future.
