[Goanet] - Tracing your GOAN ancestry -
GOAN FAMILY HISTORY PROJECT British Goan Histories Project : https://www.facebook.com/groups/136838369748358/ - Tracing your ancestry - http://goansinternationaluk.blogspot.co.uk/2012/03/goan-family-histories.html Last Saturday 21 April, I was one of the attendees at a workshop led by Clifford Pereira FRGS. Cliff – as he is known – is well-known for his extensive work in research and projects for the National Maritime Museum, the Royal Geographical Society and the Bexley Local Studies and Archive Centre. The workshop (free) was held at the latter venue – which was easy to get to thanks to instructions sent to each participant in advance. Indeed, some participants arrived on time despite the 2 hour travel to get there. But we were a lively bunch of Goans all eager to lap up the information being given to us. Cliff introduced the proceedings by informing that the Histories of British-Goans project was funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and managed by the Goan Association UK. He then went on to give the background of Goans – as well as a concise and thorough explanation of our ancestry. It was surprising to know that there are people like us who have the same ancestry, language (Konkani), customs and food living in places among others, as far-flung as Thailand, Malaysia and closer to home on the east coast of India. Cliff shared a lot of information and then went on to explain how one could trace our family history – both from links and records held not only in Goa, but also in Britain – much of which he himself had personally delved into for his own family history. Strangely, at least 3 of us seemed to have links with each other so bringing home the oft thrown joke that Goans are all related to each other! I particularly was interested in a missing seaman from the Second World War and was stunned in the latter part of the day, to discover his whereabouts. That seaman was my uncle, which will bring some sort of closure to the family. Others too were able to trace some history of departed ancestors. Cliff was amazing in his delivery, his knowledge, his helpfulness and had prepared well for the day, even providing us with a helpful pack, containing fact sheets and related information. Also present was Dr Frenz, a lecturer in Global History, who gave help and support to whoever needed it that day, and Agnes Costa-Correa – both of whom are also part of the team of the British Goan Project. For me, the workshop enlightened, informed and enthused me greatly and if there should be a repeat, then I would heartily encourage early booking to ensure a place. Those present: Odette and Joe Mascarenhas co founders Sylvester D'Souza of Sheela Restaurant in Vasco-member Target audience : 48 students of MES college, 6 faculty members Topic: we spoke about the origin and History of Goan food down the ages, based on my book The Culinary Escapade of Goa…from 700 BC the Gaud Saaraswat Brahmins, to the innumerable conquests and the change in food habits. With the advent of the Portuguese, food preparations like the Assado, Raechado, Vindalho etc entered local kitchens to be fused with local ingredients. With a focus on ingredient change the Portuguese preparations were incorporated to suit the local tastebuds. We spoke about the Vin ail ho…which became a Vindalho. Sylvester demonstrated the preparation. The students were impressed…85 percent were local Goans who had never even known about the history and origin of dishes commonly prepared at home. A few students from Afghan asked for the recipe. They felt that the taste impressed them. We were very happy to have two ‘Hindu Goan’ entrepreneurs in our midst this evening…Aparna Shah and Girish Desai. The discussion started with the aims and objectives read out for the new invitees. The flavor of the evening to be vetted was ‘Raechado’ and eight samples were placed on the table. This included two Hindu Goan masalas too, but no one was informed about it. This was ‘blind tasting’. The initial resistance…’can we really pin down on one masala to be standardised’ took a lot of discussion. Mr Girish Desai felt that the authenticity of each home made preparation would be lost. Mr Michael Mascarenhas felt that the concept of adding ‘illeshe’ or ‘moot’ as the gravy was being prepared added to the taste and ‘uniqueness’ of the preparation. Some participants felt that the old preparations of the vinegar and the absence of the chilies which used to be used would not help in the following of a standard recipe. And yet everyone agreed that different establishments had commercially let down on the authenticity of the Goan preparations…that tourists and foreigners were not getting the true taste of Goa. Hesitation and debate on the futility of the exercise… Deep down however they all believed that the future of Goan food and its authenticity needed to be worked on. Slight stalemate. Odette agreed to each ones view but stated firmly that although many countries had their own individual regional recipe, a main recipe was standardized for posterity, and here was the panel of technically competent individuals. ‘Lets try out the method of blind tasting by pretending we are the clients.’ And so the process was begun. Two Hindu Goan preparations when placed with the others seemed different. In fact many participants felt that Raechado was strictly used in Portuguese and Christian Goan food. And yet going by the word Raechado which means ‘stuffed’ the masala was used in Hindu Goan preparations too. For stuffing in Mackerals. A paradigm change in mindsets. Now one has to remember that there is no sugar added in the Hindu Goan masala, no vinegar too. At the end of 3 rounds for the elimination Sheela Bar and Restaurant O Coqueiro Alila Diwa Were the three Raechado masalas selected for the authenticity in taste. We hope to feature their recipes shortly For the Hindu Goan ‘taste’ the Spice Goa masala was selected. For a red masla curry which could be used as a gravy for preparations like Aad Maas, the masala of Michael Mascarenhas of Flying Dolphin was selected. All in all it was a great interaction which kept everyone absorbed…the time just flew by. Look out for the next post on Xacutti masala…. [Goanet] GOA Toornto - Retirees and Friends - trip to GOA !
Toronto Goan Overseas Association (GOA) trip to Goa, India, Jan 2012 A new age of retired and senior members of the GOA has emerged. A group of fun-loving, young at heart folk who have finally reached the age when they can pick up their bags and escape the cold winters of Canada! This has been a practice worldwide for many years, very similar to the snow birds that migrate to Florida for the winter. This year, the GOA Retirees and Friends launched a new event. Earlier in 2011, I contacted Nick DeMello of Aerotours International, who worked tirelessly to put together a program tailored specifically to meet the needs of the GOA members. Flights, tours, hotel accommodation, entertainment, are all part of this exciting trip. The vacation is approximately two weeks, one in the North of Goa and one in the South with tours of ancestral Goa, the beaches, Spice Village, Garca Branca in Loutulim, etc. Some, however, have elected to stay on for a few more weeks and visit relatives, friends or just enjoy the sunshine and the beaches. An added option to this trip is the opportunity to visit the Taj Mahal in Delhi and/or the backwaters of Kerala. The members were allowed to plan their vacation to their own specifications if they so wished. Locally, we are approximately 40 members on the trip, but we are also being joined by a group of other Canadian and overseas Goan Association members. Lots of socializing and inter-action will be happening. The departure date for the trip is the week-end of January 22nd, 2012. The joy of visiting Goa never fades! The joy of visiting our mother-land, seeing the smiling local residents and relatives, and being received with such warmth, is an amenity no fancy Caribbean resort can ever compete with. Re: [Goanet] Merry Christmas - from GWS - Nairobi, Kenya
On 23 Dec 2011, at 09:35, Goan Welfare Society Nairobi wrote: Dear GWS Members, Wow!!! the year has flown by and now it is time to say good-bye to 2011. The GWS Chairman Management Committee would like to wish all the Members, friends and associates of the Goan Welfare Society a Very Merry Christmas and a Happy, Peaceful and Prosperous New Year, 2012, we thank you for the support you have so generously accorded us over the year. The Chairman and his enthusiastic team have kept you updated with news, organised functions and ensured those that mattered most to the GWS, namely the widowed and elderly were taken cared off. This started off with the Senior's Day organised by Marilyn Miranda and her super fabulous team, held on 7th August, 2011. The senior citizens were thoroughly spoilt for food, music, prizes for the various games organised and left with goodie bags - one would envy. On the same day, the fundraising team, headed by Sheila Lobo and her sub-committee, got the ball rolling with the Car Boot Sale. The event was a roaring success, being the first, with over 20 cars, and this realised a net profit of KShs.:48,000.00. Still keeping the party mood on, the Goa Day celebrations started with the Family Football Tournament, which saw various villages battle for the top position. The children weaved their way through their Mums but at the end of the day, Mums always know best! The celebrations were held on 22nd August, 2011, which also proved to be a success. The people were treated to an authentic Goan luncheon, palm tree deco and pulsating Goan and international music. The young and the old graced the occasion dressed in sari which prominently portrayed their pride at being Goan. The luncheon function ended into the late evening. The youngsters could not get enough of the music. The Anniversary of the GWS on 13th October, 2011, was celebrated with a Mass at St. Jude's Chapel followed by a get-together in the church compound. Being the feast of St. Jude, the usual congregation were impressed to note that we spared precious time to be thankful for what we have achieved. There was plenty to eat and drink. Hot coffee and tea were welcomed as the evening began to be chilly. The highlight of the year was the annual football tournament headed by our ever hard working fund raising committee Sheila Lobo. This time, her team exceeded beyond excel. We had over 18 corporates -old and new - taking part. Towards the end of the day the rains came the spectators were treated to uncanny moves as the games went on until a winner was got. This 4th Annual Football Tournament, our major fund raiser, realised its target of one million Kenya Shillings, net profit. The GWS has purchased two- three bed roomed flats in Thika, known as the Flame Tree Project. A nice asset to fall on when hard time come knocking by. As we end our year, you are kindly requested to send your individual and family voluntary annual contribution for the welfare cases, if you have not done so. Currently we are assisting a cancer patient, with chemo session. Your generous contributions towards this case will be sincerely appreciated Once again, on behalf of the GWS, the Chairman and Management Committee would like to thank each and every member of the GWS for supporting us this year, whether small or big, a kind word or a critic, we have learnt from you and appreciate your advice.
