Re: [Goanet] Happy Birthday Frederick!

2021-12-19 Thread Frederick Noronha
Hi Roland,
I've been called Uncle for the last 35 or so years, which is fine, no
complaints.
Actually, I don't quite believe in birthday-ism. My last birthday
celebrated was at 14, when I was already having doubts the logic of it all.
If you're alive you obviously were born (on someday or the other, which is
more related to the calendar you follow, rather than you!). And if you were
not born, then the birthday question would not have arisen. So...
As for the date, I'm confused myself. Some wished me on the 18th, some
today. Google says my birthday is 23rd Dec. Suggested that they try wishing
every three days, and one might actually turn up right! Or, alternatively,
we can forget this for what it is: just an accident of birth :-) FN

OK so there is a dispute about your birthday either being on the 23, 26 or 27
without any clarification from you.

A google search says you will soon be 58 on that day so until then you may not
be called Uncle.

Here’s wishing you will not be called Aunty either!

[Goanet] Happy Birthday Goan Voice UK

2021-07-15 Thread Roland Francis
Congratulations to Eddie Fernandes on the 23rd anniversary of his digital
publication.

Day in and day out with no break as far as I can tell, the daily edition
appears on cyberspace. Even when Eddie sails on the high seas on his frequent
vacations, and despite expensive marine communications, with high level
personal effort, Eddie will ensure that the GVUK comes out unfailingly.

A Goan from Kenya who emigrated to the UK, Eddie a professional university
librarian now retired, has named the bulletin after an old Goan-Kenyan
newspaper. Content is totally Goan or Goa related, picked up from previously
published pieces all over the world. Nothing is original, but Eddie performs
an invaluable service by highlighting it to a mainstream worldwide Goan
audience. I feel honoured that he allowed me to write an opinion piece every
Sunday over a few years, that being the only exception he made to his ‘must be
previously published’ policy.

The death notice and obituary section is popular with Goans everywhere and has
become a de facto standard like the Times of India used to be for all educated
Bombay citizens. In fact if a Goan dies anywhere in the world outside of Goa,
many families first choice is to place the notice in Eddie’s digital rag. With
most Goans having family and friends all over the Diaspora, this is invaluable.

He has also let his audience learn of outstanding Goans young or old whose
deeds and achievements are bound to inspire and instill the Goan heart with
pride.

Viva Eddie Fernandes and the Goan Voice UK.

[Goanet] HAPPY BIRTHDAY DEAR PRAVIN

2020-03-02 Thread Aires Rodrigues
Very warm Birthday greetings to my dear friend of many years Pravin Zantye
the MLA of Mayem. If a benchmark is to be set on the quality and integrity
of MLAs that we elect, Pravin would be a guiding example.

With so many of our Ministers and MLAs facing criminal cases of all sorts,
our Pravin stands tall in his reputation and impeccable uprightness.

Much before I met Pravin, I have nostalgic memories of his dear dad Harish
Zantye who in 1980 was elected as an Independent MLA from Bicholim and went
on to be our Education Minister.

I am very privileged to know today’s birthday boy Pravin and his dear Dad.
Had I known his grandfather, I would perhaps today have been Goa’s Cashew
King!

All the very best Pravin. May you continue to be blessed in all you do.

[Goanet] HAPPY BIRTHDAY MR. PROPERTY SAWANT

2019-04-23 Thread Aires Rodrigues
It is Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant’s birthday today. As it is his first
and definitely his last birthday as the CM, he is not celebrating it, not
that he has anything to celebrate about. He has asked us not to spend on
releasing newspaper advertisements’ or on those floral bouquets.

Pramod Sawant would be content if we gift him envelopes of hard cash so
that he can further amplify his huge property holdings in Goa. The Rags to
Riches Pramod Sawant has given up as an ayurvedic practitioner that he was
and now is a full-time real estate magnate having acquired over the last
few years huge properties in Goa and the neighboring States. His tenure as
Chairman of the Goa State Infrastructure Development Corporation (GSIDC)
was a Gold mine for him. No wonder he is now better known as Mr. Property
Sawant.

By the way at behaving in rank arrogance and resorting to cheap politriks,
the also RSS indoctrinated CM Pramod Sawant has overtaken his very egoistic
and crude predecessor late Manohar Parrikar. Power corrupts and absolute
Power corrupts absolutely.

The people of Goa can only but cling to the faint but perhaps forlorn hope
that having notched another year he will be wiser and act with integrity
and in the best interests of all the people that he has sworn to serve
instead of his personal property interests.

[Goanet] Happy Birthday Namdev - Goa's best cricketer turns 60

2018-08-20 Thread Bernado Colaco
Another good player in my opinion was Colin Rodrigues, not to sure if he
played in the Ranji. The standard of cricket was very poor than in comparison to
other states. until they brought in some bailhe to prop up the game in Goa.
BC

My friend Parag Hede put up an interesting piece of trivia on his Facebook
wall,  that Namdev Fadte, Goa's former ace cricketer had turned 60. Revived
a few nostalgic memories of one of my childhood heroes. I remember those
years when Goa had just made its debut in the Ranji trophy and Namdev was
one of the team's star players. A stylish batsman from the first batch who
performed consistently well for the team. That team had quite a few decent
players. Subhash Kangralkar, Sharad Pednekar, Suresh Mahadevan, few others.
Dayanand Bangera, if I'm not mistaken, came sometime later. He too was a
good wicket keeper batsman who served Goa well during those times.

My friend Parag Hede put up an interesting piece of trivia on his Facebook

Dayanand Bangera, if I'm not mistaken, came sometime later. He too was a

On a scale of 1 to 10, I would give Namdev Fadte a high 6+ rating. He was a
batsman with an extremely aggresive and positive frame of mind. I can
recall him playing some of the most difficult shots from the cricketing
books with utmost ease. He could hook, he could pull and could equally play
those delightful drives piercing the fielders on the offside with poetic
grace. He was easily Goa's best. From the first Goan to score a century in
the Ranji trophy to being the first to get into the South Zone, Duleep and
Board XI squads, he had many firsts.

As a batsman, he was in complete contrast to Subhash Kangralkar who too was
quite a decent batsman but more in the defensive mould. In comparative
terms, Namdev was to Goa what Virat is to India now. He had the ability to
score fast runs against good bowling attacks and above all, he was quite a
crowd favourite. Much like how fans used to switch off their TV sets when
Sachin used to get out, many of his Goan fans used to do quite the same,
walk out every time the prolific scorer made his walk back to the pavilion.

There were times when the local fans wanted to see him as the team captain
and were not too happy with the selectors for choosing Kangralkar over
him. They would come in large numbers and shout slogans like "Aamcho
Captain Namdev", they would rejoice his success and would get dejected when
he got out. No doubt a player with his talent definitely deserved to be the
team captain.

Those were the formative years of Goan cricket and though the team did not
win much, it was players like Namdev who managed to pull in large crowds
and fill up the stands. Fond and nostalgic memories of one of my childhood
heroes. Happy Birthday Namdev. You entertained us with your cricket and
gave us many bright moments to celebrate. Wishing you happiness and
continued success.

Warm regards

[Goanet] HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU DR J.C.ALMEIDA

2017-03-06 Thread Aires Rodrigues
This is wishing Goa’s former Chief Secretary Dr. J.C.Almeida a very Happy
Birthday as he turns 87 today.

Dr. J.C.Almeida has been a distinguished administrator and a dear friend to
the student community. It was due to his untiring efforts that during the
1979 student agitation, he managed to prevail upon the then Government that
the students of Goa should be bestowed 50% bus concession.

Having worked under Goa’s first Chief Minister Dayanand Bandodkar and other
successive Chief Ministers, Dr J.C.Almeida is a living witness to how over
the years our once beautiful State has been sinking from bad to worse.

On 6th November 2016 at a public function in Panaji, Dr Almeida while
expressing deep anguish over the current destruction and devastation of Goa
lamented that Goa was now gone and not salvageable.

Pointing out to the rampant corruption and bad governance that has engulfed
the State, Dr Almeida recollected how bureaucrats during the tenure of
Chief Minister Dayanand Bandodkar and later under Shashikala Kakodkar
strictly functioned within the parameters of law.

At 87, Dr J.C.Almeida is still going strong, candid and bubbly as ever. May
he be an inspiration to some of those spineless bureaucrats of today who
unfortunately have ended up being slaves of their Political masters.

2012-11-20 Thread Roland.francis
When the roll call of the turn-of-the-century philantrophic Goans is one day
compiled, Eddie Fernandes of Kenya and UK will surely find a place.

Philanthrophy in its truest sense does not mean only the giving away of large
amounts of money or large estates. That is easy to give when one has much. What
one has that is in limited supply is one's time on earth. And when one chooses
to give of that liberally, for an altruistic cause, in this case Goan social
capital (thanks to Frederick Noronha for popularizing that phrase), then the
person giving must be celebrated.

Happy birthday Eddie Fernandes for Nov 26 and may Goan saints legitimate or
not, continue blessing your endeavors.

I would like to wish a very Happy Birthday to my Canadian Goan friend Roland

especially when I see him at Goan parties, community soirees, Goan village

Roland and his family are great hosts and they will shower Goan ambience all
around you when you are their guests, along with a group of friends comprising
of who-is-who of Goan society in Toronto, who show up regularly at his posh
home in Toronto.
I wish Roland great health and happiness so I can share more of his experiences
and narratives with Goans in Goa, Mumbai, Middle East, Canada and the world.
I count Roland Francis as one of the great Goan writers and raconteurs I ever
met in my life, especially when you see his writings on Anglo-Indians of

Eugene, Where did this quote come from? My curiosity (and ignorance)
took me to Google to check.

Wikipedia attributes it to Finley Peter Dunne (July 10, 1867-April 24,

subsequently borrowed by others -- Clare Booth Luce in a memorable

Archbishop of Canterbury) have called it the goal of religion; social
activist Mother Mary Jones; and a version showed up in a memorable
line delivered by Gene Kelly in a great newspaper movie, Stanley
Kramer's 1960 film, Inherit the Wind.)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Finley_Peter_Dunne

But, in the original sense: As a journalist in the age of muckraking
journalism, Dunne was aware of the power of institutions, including
his own. Writing as Dooley, Dunne once wrote the following passage
cautioning against the power of the newspapers themselves: Th
newspaper does ivrything f'r us. It runs th' polis foorce an' th'
banks, commands th' milishy, controls th' ligislachure, baptizes th'
young, marries th' foolish, comforts th' afflicted, afflicts th'
comfortable, buries th' dead an' roasts thim aftherward.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Finley_Peter_Dunne

The word muckraker seems to have many different meanings. Sometimes
positive. Or: The term is a reference to a character in John Bunyan's
classic Pilgrim's Progress, the Man with the Muck-rake that rejected
salvation to focus on filth. It became popular after President
Theodore Roosevelt referred to the character in a 1906 speech.

Would be glad to hear your views on muckraking journalism and the
possibility of misuse of powers of the media? FN

Like the good Roland Francis, I too wish Eugene Ad Multos Annos.

There is NO doubt in my mind that Eugene has a deep love for Goa and

[Goanet] Happy Birthday Domnic Fernandes

2011-10-03 Thread roland . francis
Health and happiness to Domnic in Anjuna.

His many articles in Goanet on Goa's cultural history gave many readers hours
of nostalgia and pleasure. So did his book Domnic's Goa which I read at one
sitting, start to finish.

Memories such as those are rare in one so relatively young and are an asset for
the community.

Now that he is writing on Mapuca, I hope he includes my village of neighboring
Assagao and it's people, since it is the filling between the sandwich slices of
Mapuca and his own Anjuna and about which I know so little.

In fact if he includes other satellite Bardez villages of Mapuca, it might take
him more time but it will have made it worthwhile to all of us.

No body else is going to do that and if Domnic won't do it, it's gone forever.

On a related note, Joel D'souza's individual coverage of Goa's villages was
equally interesting when they appeared years ago and deserve to be compiled and
sold.

Dear all: Many of the old time Goanetters would surely know Domnic Fernandes
of Anjuna, earlier in Saudi Arabia, and the author of the book *Domnic's
Goa*. Incidentally, the idea for the book came after a series of articles he
wrote on Goanet.

Domnic has been back in Goa, in Anjuna, running a franchisee outlet and also
doing what he does well -- writing. At the moment, he's working on a book on
the Mapusa of old. So if you have any inputs or suggestions or pointers (and
specially old photos which you could give permission to reproduce), kindly
contact him at domval...@hotmail.com

Coincidentally, it's both Domnic's and his daughter's birthday tomorrow (Oct
4), and here's wishing both all the best. It's nice to know such people,
specially the the work they do in helping us to remember not to forget the
fast changing reality that is Goa of the yesteryears. FN

I had a miss call on my mobile and I was wondering who it could, be since the
caller was not registered on my mobile. Then, when I opened the days' pile of
newspapers, I knew who the caller was. It was Ravi Bab. His life size photo,
seated on the expensive sofa, holding his mobile to his ear was staring at me.
? Why did you call me Ravi Bab? Was it to ask me for my birthday wishes to be
splashed on the newspapers today?

And I have this un-asked question to ask of you and all our elected people's
representatives like you, a question that has been pickling inside of me for
quite some time now.

'How come the photographers always but always catch our birthday boys when they
are busy talking over their phones?' Or should I say ' when the 'phones' are
attached to their very sensitive ears?'. Who are they talking to? -- God
Almighty? -- for having been kind to them to allow them to rake in pay-dirt by
calling themselves the 'tireless social workers' ?

Happy birthday Ravi Bab. I would have willingly obliged if I knew it was you
who called.

[Goanet] Happy Birthday M.F. Hussain

2009-09-17 Thread Sandeep Heble
On the 17th of September, Hundreds of Artists gathered to celebrate in
a novel way the birthday of one of the illustrious sons of the Indian
soil, Maqbool Fida Hussain popularly known as M.F. Hussain. Artists -
eminent, emerging as well as young students of Art - exhibited their
Art works at an exhibition organized by Jamia Millia Islamia in
association with SAHMAT. The exhibition was organized to commemorate
Hussain’s 94th birthday. A “Befitting Tribute” to one of the greatest
Artists of contemporary India!

The story of Hussain’s life would indeed be an inspirational tale to
tell, a triumph of determination over adversity, of success over the
many speed bumps that one would encounter over life’s highway. He was
born on 17th September 1915 in the Pandharpur town of Maharashtra.
Coming from extremely humble backgrounds, he had to endure difficult
times in his infant age, having lost his mother as a child.

Living in the pilgrimage city of Pandharpur, Hussain soon became
enchanted by the Hindu spiritual texts, particularly the Ramayan, the
Geeta, the Upanishads and the various Puranas, later to become the
very life and form of his Canvasses. He began his career by drawing
Cinema hoardings; later shifting to the themes he loved the most. One
decade of his illustrious career was spent drawing 150 canvases of the
Ramayan on the insistence of Dr Ram Manohar Lohia. Another decade
spent drawing the Mahabharata. Thousands more drawn in a career
spanning over 7 decades on Hindu Gods and Goddesses – Ganeshas, Shiva,
Parvati and Hanuman - he captured them all with his paint and brush.

In 1966, the Government of India awarded him the prestigious “Padma
Shree”, and within a few years another prestigious Award the “Padma
Bhushan”. Perhaps the greatest tribute to Hindu Art came in the early
2008, when Hussain’s Battle of Ganga and Jamuna: Mahabharata set a
world record at Christie's Auction by fetching an astronomical $1.6
million, a record of sorts.

Today, this premier Artist, classified as the 'Picasso of India' by
the Forbes magazine has to spend his birthday in isolation, and the
sunset of his life in exile, outside the Country he loves the most,
hounded by the followers of a Religion that he has been attracted to
the most. Thanks to a needless controversy created by groups who
understand nothing about Art.

M F Hussain’s Canvasses are stunning visual masterpieces – all devoted
to the glory and the diversity of Hinduism. He is undoubtedly the
greatest painter that India has produced in modern times. Hindus must
not get carried away by the false and malicious propaganda being
carried out by the well-orchestrated machinery of Right Wing Groups.
We must realize that behind all the opposition is simply a predatory
lust for power. The Artist deserves to be judged by the entire
spectrum of his works done during the course of his lifetime, not just
by a few odd paintings which some may find objectionable, either
justifiably or unjustifiably.

Real Justice can be given to the premier Artist by giving him a warm
and gracious welcome. The Poster Boy of Hinduism must be back in
India, painting his Canvasses. This is the very least he deserves, if
not the “Bharat Ratna”.

Cheers
Sandeep Heble

[Goanet] Happy Birthday Remmie Colaco! Khuxalbhorit Zolmacho Diss, Remmie!

2008-09-18 Thread Silviano Barbosa
Dear respected Remmie Colaco!

I wish you a very Happy Birthday! May God bless you with good health and may
you continue with many more years of your creative contribution to our Konkani
theatre.
You are one of the very few creative Konkani song composers that gave our
Konkani song culture a real boost. You wrote great Konkani songs, like Ankvar
Moriechem Dukh, Maim ani Sun, Satvo Sacrament, Dote, Cazar zatam haum
and many other duets with singers like Lourdes Colaco and others. You wrote
great Tiatros and you wrote many lyrics of Konkani songs on records and in
films like Amchem Noxib, especially the Manddo, Ho Manddo Goencho khoro,
nachonk kitlo boro.urba addta aro, Nachliari puro, which was sung at Margao
for the Holy Spirit Feast.
Your songs were recorded on His Master's Voice label, like Moga poita tuka
halon ani dolon, and many many others which I cannot recollect now.
Your acting was superb, as a young maiden or a character actor with a handsome
face, or as a smooth decent (clown) singer. Your songs always had a moral and
the tunes were very sweet and popular.
Like many other Tiatrists you too were a good soccer player. We watched you on
Guardian Angel High School grounds, Sanvordem, always ready with your soccer
boots and socks. You were a good personal friend of our Principal Fr. Gervasio
Pinto from Moira, who developed the little school into a great Collegiate in
Curchorem. You always accompanied your wife, who was a teacher at our School
festivities.
Today I salute you for your great writing talent as a great Konkani poet,
actor, singer, director, lyricist and a good family man.
You have kept up the name of a model Tiatrist for posterity.
May you always live and shine forever in the eyes of our future Konkani youth.
Devan tumkam bori bolaiki divum!
Viva!

Your great fan,

Silviano Barbosa,

[Goanet] Happy birthday Goanet!

2008-08-24 Thread Domnic Fernandes

Many happy returns of the day Goanet and Herman Carneiro! May the Almighty
Lord bestow His choicest blessings and grant you a long life.

I am indebted to Goanet for allowing me to use it as a platform to post my
thoughts in the form of articles which ultimately culminated into a book
“Domnic’s Goa – A nostalgic romp through a bygone era.”

My sincere thanks to the dedicated admin team, especially Bosco D’Mello, who
has always been a great help to everyone. Keep up the good work buddies!

One year older and deeper and then ...

I too look forward to anecdotes from your Kenya and Saudi Arabia days.

Hold the sorpotel, go long on the beer.
