Do you think Goans should blindly follow what is fed to them like beggars? As to your last sentence, I cannot think what you're saying. Perhaps you mean Knights of St Columba. No, I meant Christopher Columbus of genocide fame. He was a mass murderer and even though the Knights of Columbus who are named after him do good work, should there be a Hitler's orphanage or a Pol Pot Senior Center or a Mao Tse Tung Home for the Disabled? http://www.GOANET.org International Cuisine Conference on Traditional Asian Diet Panaji, Goa, September 2-5, 2007 - http://www.indologygoa.in Online Media Partner: http://www.goanet.org Dear George, Did you understand what I wrote? I reckon I did. Equality in Australia? You mean for the aboriginals? Should they be allowed to get on with life too? Aboriginals, if they behave themselves and do not indulge in grog, are pretty much respected for what they do. Sportspeople, actors, artists and documentors are examples. Unfortunately, among the uninitiated, concepts of ownership and membership are sometimes confused, and herein lies one of the problems. Education is available more freely for the aboriginals than the whites in remote areas (a type of negative discrimination is practiced whereby the aborigines get taken to school in a community bus or even a plane, but the local whites have to make their own way, sometimes being a drive of a couple of hours each way), if they let themselves and their children to be educated. Repeating a cliche, one can take a horse to the water but cannot make it drink - I am not in anyway comparing a human to an animal, so please understand that this is a way of explanation. There are many of aboriginal descent (but are mostly white in colour, and difficult to discern), and these are the guys who want to make the most use of freebies and handouts available. My wife has to handle a few of these types in her course of work, who take the extra days off for no reason, and come to work maybe 2 days in 5. All training and planned work goes pending, and no one can do a thing about this slackness under pain of being taken to task for discrimination. This is the reality. I might say the same exists in Goa with regard to our own indigenous peoples. Really? And what if the pool of saints has been deliberately restricted to mostly Europeans? I presume you have already approached the diocese and the higher ecclesiastic authorities and complained? There is no point in doing it here. PS I suppose you alredy know it, but I might as well repeat what my mother taught me when I was a child: A saint is/was an ordinary person who does/did ordinary things extraordinarily well. And we ought to emulate the good things that they do/did. And yes, there are unsung and unfeasted saints among us. Cheers, Gabriel de Figueiredo. Melbourne - Australia. One reason Rushdie gets knighted is to use him and to stick it to Muslims and the West's current War on Islam. This annual charade is part of its self-amusement which markets itself with the least employed family in the world (the Royal family) who have been on the public dole for centuries.

http://www.GOANET.org International Cuisine Conference on Traditional Asian Diet Panaji, Goa, September 2-5, 2007 - http://www.indologygoa.in Online Media Partner: http://www.goanet.org So it is OK to give PADMA SHREEs by a third world country but not OK to bestow honours to people who are inventors, do-ens and public helpers of world fame? Secondly does George know about the Economic Climate after England had won the WWII? (I'm not going to start a history lesson here, but he better do some research). All other currencies are below UKs - how about that for a start. Why he is given a Knighrhood has a political undercurrent, UK is not stupid. It is India that is stupid (killed Indira and got our currency from Rs15/-to £ during her time to R80/- today). To be fair, over 400 people have rejected Knighthoods, OBEs, MBEs etc., both within and outside Europe. Their comments in rejecting these awards are illuminating and educational. Fortunately some people have integrity - albeit a small minority. In 2006, I was surprized when Sonia Gandhi accepted the Grand Officer of the Order of Leopold award. King Leopold of Belgium in whose memory the award was made, qualifies as a mass murderer for his role in the Congo (late 19th, early 20th century). Sonia should have spat on the offer of the award but she is European-born and does not see the historial injustice. Instead she becomes a player and pawn in this pitiful tamasha. Of course a number of Indians including the Indian media were thrilled at the award since they need a white person's validation. Any third-rate white award means a whole deal. I suppose if years of colonialism have brainwashed you to think of yourself as second-class to whites, then any white stamp is an honour. Regards, George --- A lot of mindless things are done in the name of religion and even more mindless things are done to gain acceptance in this world, but I don't think celebrating village feasts is one of them. The poor, hapless souls who celebrate these feasts do not even know who the saints are, their nationality irrelevant to them. They don't have anything to gain by being validated by the white man, nor have they read clever books to realise the redundancy of what they are doing. They are simple people who are trying to propitiate God to intervene in the helplessness of their lives. Until they are transformed by education, they will continue to do so, but we can't assign motives to their veneration. selma Got a little couch potato? Now I have to ask, how can it be that this man who has viciously attacked British Imperialism while settled in Britain and Islam inspite of being born Muslim, is now being offered knighthood. Who are the hypocrites in this travesty? Salman Rushdie or the British Government. Is the answer perhaps there is no hypocrisy involved in such a stance, unless seen through the eyes of the narrow minded or ill informed. Not that I am comparing Roland's rather harmless hysterics to those we are witnessing from religious fanatics in Pakistan and Iran.
