*TAG Remembers Ermelin, Cruz Jazzwala Mussolini Menezes*

Tiatr Academy Goa (TAG) organized its monthly programme ‘Somplolea
Tiatristancho Ugddas’ – Remembering Tiatr Artistes of Yester Years on
21stMay 2012 at the Conference Hall of TAG, Campal Trade Centre,
Campal Panjim
to remember veteran artistes of tiatr stage namely Ermelin Cardoz, Baptista
Cruz Noronha (Cruz Jazzwala) and Mussolini Vales de Menezes.

“It was Ermelin who was responsible to bring Prithviraj Kapoor the stalwart
of Hindi cinema on the screen” narrated Shri. Tomazinho Cardozo, former
President of Tiatr Academy Goa who was the main speaker on the occasion. It
so happened that during the shooting of ‘Cinema Girl’ the cast opposite
Ermelin did not turn up and the director of the film asked Ermelin’s choice
and she choose Prithviraj Kapoor. Mr. Cardozo cited these excerpts from the
book ‘Location Goa’ in which Mario Cabral e Sa has dedicated a full
write-up on Ermelin. Speaking further he said that at that time Ermelin was
paid around Rs. 5000/- a month which was a huge amount at that time when
other actors were paid around Rs. 2000/- to Rs. 3000/-. “One of the most
beautiful heroines of Indian cinema Ermelin has acted in about 40 Hindi
silent films some of which are ‘Hotel Padmini’, ‘Cinema Girl’, ‘Red
Signal’, ‘Children of Storm’, ‘Noor e Bagdad’, ‘Jagad Guru’, ‘Daring
Damsel’… Later on Ermelin was married to Saib Rocha one of the greatest
writer and director of Goan Tiatr. It was a tragic end of ‘Sudhabala’ the
name by which Ermelin was known on the silver screen. She died on the sets
in an accident during the shooting of one of her films”. Mr. Cardozo
further said that it was a matter of great pride for Goans that an actress
of such a depute stepped on the tiatr stage. Giving the names of the tiatrs
he stated that she acted in lead roles in Saib Rocha’s ‘Romeo Juliet’,
‘Mog ani Krim’… and Souza Ferrao’s ‘Almam Sorgar Vetat’.

Speaking on Cruz Jazzwala Mr. Cardozo said that Cruz was a multifaceted
personality who was not only known as an actor but also was an exemplary
writer, director lyricist, singer and a great musician. He further stated
that he could play trumpet, Violin, Double Bass and Hawain Guitar. He was a
lover of folklore and had great love for Goa and his mother tongue. This
was evident from his songs and mandos which he composed which evolved
around Goa and Goans. He has composed and recorded more than 25 Konkani
songs on gramophone records and some of his famous compositions are ‘Mhozo
Poti Mumboi ghela’, ‘Jakin Bai’, ‘Istimosanv Rozachem’, etc. He was also a
very handsome lad and had also acted female roles in tiatrs of late J. P.
Souzalin, Anthony de Sa, Minguel Rod, etc.

Speaking on Mussolini Menezes Mr. Cardozo stated that Mussolini was a
unique tiatr writer and director. Being a freedom fighter his tiatrs were
focused on Goa’s freedom struggles which are evident from the names eg
‘Raoji Ranno’, ‘Padrinchem Bondd’, ‘Cuncolimche Martyr’. As his tiatrs were
based on Goa’s freedom he could not have the shows in Goa and hence had to
show them in Belgaum, Mumbai and Delhi because the Portuguese wouldn’t
allow such tiatrs to be shown in Goa at that time. He also said that Mr.
Menezes a great lover of Goan folklore and folk music. He showcased this
wherein he presented all the 32 Goan folk forms to packed auditoriums in
Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, Madras, Pune, etc.

Summing up on all the three artistes Mr. Cardozo said that all the three
artistes are unique as there was something different in them which one
could not find in a general tiatr artistes. He also requested the family
members of these late artistes to handover the tiatr scripts of these late
artistes to TAG so that it can be preserved for posterity.

Prominent among others who spoke on the occasion were Master Vaz, Anil
Kumar, Fr. Alfred Almeida. Bab Andrew rendered mando and song ‘Mhozo Poto

of Kala Academy he has provided stage sets to all the prize winning tiatrs
of Tomazinho Cardozo, Cezar D’Mello and many others.

On the Marathi stage too Kamalakant Chari has done remarkable work in stage
setting. He has won awards at the national level for stage setting. His

*Workshop on Light Effects Held*

“In order to make acting more effective use of lights can be made in
different ways. When acting is supported by background music and light
effects, the presentation becomes very meaningful. This is what every tiatr
director must strive to achieve” said Shri. Satish Gawas, an experienced
theatre personality in Goa. He was speaking to the participants of the
workshop on lights effects as a resource person of the workshop organized by
TAG in collaboration with Ravindra Bhavan Margao yesterday.

Interacting further with the participants some of whom provide light effects
to commercial tiatrs in Goa, he stressed the need for designing the light
effects to be provided for a particular play. He advised the artistes
interested in providing light effects in tiatrs that there should be
complete understanding between the director, light effects designer and
background music designer in order to produce an excellent performance.

Explaining the exact meaning of using light of different colours he
suggested different situations to which different colours should be used. He
warned the participants that unnecessary use of colourful light in a drama
is misuse of the light effects.

He explained in detail the different types of apparatus for providing light
and also gave them the details of each and every part of the different light
equipment as well as its functions and how they can be effectively used in
numerous situations. He also explained the participants how minimum number
of spots can be used for an effective performance.

Shri. Gawas took all the participants to the control room and encouraged
them to practically handle the apparatus with their own hands.

Shri. Premanand Sangodkar, a veteran tiatr artiste was the Chief Guest. In
his address he advised the participants to try to bring a change in
providing light effects in tiatrs which is a serious drawback in the
production of tiatr.

Shri. Tomazinho Cardozo, President of TAG in his address said that tiatr is
the most popular dramatic form of Goa yet it cannot be compared to the
standard of dramas in other languages because tiatr productions greatly lack
in providing light effects and background music.

In the concluding session Shri. Shridhar Kamat, Vice Chairman of Ravindra
Bhavan Margao was the Chief Guest and gave away the certificates to the
participants. In his address he said that in this age of technological
development, tiatr must keep pace with other dramas in other languages so
that the standard of tiatr does not suffer.

Shri. Roseferns, Vice-President of TAG proposed a vote of thanks. Ms.Reeya
Pereira compered the function.

Antonio Francisco Fernandes popularly known as Tony Sax stated that tiatr
artistes of yesteryears underwent difficult circumstances in order to
perform tiatrs in different villages of Goa due to lack of proper transport
as well as facilities for performance and yet they kept the tiatr flag
flying high. He was speaking at the ‘Kolakorak Bhett’ – Meet the Artiste

*Tiatr Needs National Recognition – Shri. Vijay Kenkre*

* *

“If tiatr artistes wish to create a niche for themselves in the field of
tiatr, they will have to drift away from the conventional formula and
present something which is different from others on the tiatr stage” said
Mr. Vijay Kenkre, a renowned theatre personality. He was delivering a
lecture on “New Trends in Modern Theatre” on the occasion of birth
anniversary of the creator of tiatr, Shri. Lucasinho Ribeiro, at the Black
Box, Kala Academy, Panjim on 2nd January 2011.

Dwelling minutely on different theatres, such as Indian theatre, European
theatre, American theatre, etc, Shri. Kenkre placed before the tiatr
artistes numerous unusual happenings that have taken place in the recent
past in the theatre. “Modern theatre is over 150 years old and hence many
dramatic analysts refer todays theatre as post modern and sometimes
post-post modern” disclosed Shri. Kenkre. Speaking further Shri. Kenkre
said, for example in the Marathi drama, the spoken word has been replaced by
the visuals. He also said that a play is not mere entertainment but it also
makes people realize that there is more to it. The combination of language
and visuals makes any presentation perfect.

Speaking further he said that in this 21st century the drama is going to
experience new trends as the writers as well as directors of today are
engrossed with innovations and inclined to place before the audience
something that is always not conventional. Although there is risk in such
attempts, particularly in the commercial drama, very few commercial artistes
takes such risks. That vacuum is filled by parallel drama which is presented
by amateurs and artistes interested in doing things differently on the drama
stage.

He said that tiatr in Goa has wide following and hence it is commercially
viable. He advised the tiatr artistes to bring out literature about tiatr
and see that it reaches to the government authorities not only in the state
but at the national level. Such attempts will definitely help Goan tiatr to
get recognition at the national level.

Numerous tiatr artistes namely Anil Kumar, Joe Rose, Mario Menezes, Cosme
Fernandes, etc posed numerous questions to which Shri. Kenkre replied
satisfactorily.

Earlier President of TAG, Shri. Tomazinho Cardozo welcomed. Dr. Ajay Vaidya
introduced the speaker and later Shri. Roseferns, Vice-President of TAG
proposed a vote of thanks. Shri. Joy Fernandes compered the function.

*Konkani Gramophone Record is 102?*

‘Pai Tiatrist- Joao Agostinho Fernandes was a visionary and hence he saw
that Konkani tiatr scripts as well as songs were preserved for posterity.
Thus he produced the first Konkani Gramophone Record, the centenary of which
we are celebrating this year’, said Dr. Rafael Fernandes while addressing
the gathering yesterday on 22nd December 2010 at TAG’s Conference Hall,
Campal, Panjim.

According to Dr. Fernandes he feels that Joao Agostinho Fernandes produced
the first Konkani Gramophone Record in 1908 and not in 1910. He informed the
audience that he has found this from the remark that Joao Agostinho has made
in his book of one of his tiatr published in 1911, that some of his songs
were recorded by HMV Company in 1908. However, he stated that more research
is needed to verify the same.

The Chief Guest of the function, the veteran singer of All India Radio, Smt.
Ansso Rodrigues stated that in the past they recorded songs when enough
facilities were not there. She expressed her satisfaction that their efforts
and sacrifices proved useful for the development of Konkani song and music.

Shri. Tomazinho Cardozo, President of TAG, stated that producing a Konkani
Gramophone Record over 100 years back was a milestone in the history of
Konkani song and music. He highlighted the efforts of late Alfred Rose, C.
Alvares, Alexinho de Candolim, Chris Perry, Young Menezes and others who
produced numerous Konkani Gramophone Records and took Konkani kantar to
different parts of the world.

A cultural programme of old Konkani songs on Gramophone Records was
presented by the singers Anthony San, Clarissa, Socorro de Santa Cruz, Sonia
Fernandes, Sharon Mazarello, Irene Cardozo and Tomazinho Cardozo.

Earlier Shri. Roseferns, Vice President of TAG welcomed the audience and

*Centenary of Konkani Songs on Gramaphone Records*

* *

Recording of Konkani Songs (Kantaram) on Gramaphone Records completes 100
years this year. The first Konkani Gramaphone Record was produced in 1910.
The first Konkani song recorded on Gramaphone Record was *‘Mirmireancho Mog’
*. It was composed and sung by the legend of tiatr stage Pai Tiatrist-Joao
Agostinho Fernandes along with Sofia.

Konkani Kantar was always popular in the past and that the popularity of
Konkani Kantar still continues till date. It was commercially viable to cut
discs of Gramaphone Records at that time. Today Konkani kantar is made
available on CDs, DVDs etc in greater numbers. It was because of financial
success that many recording companies recorded hundreds of Konkani kantaram
on Gramaphone Records at that time.

Due to technological development, Gramaphone Records became outdated and
their place was taken by CDs and DVDs. As such, we observe hundreds of Audio
CDs of Konkani kantaram being produced every year.

To commemorate the completion of 100 years of the production of Gramaphone
Records of Konkani songs, Tiatr Academy of Goa has organized a function on
Wednesday, 22nd December 2010 at 4:45 pm sharp at the Conference Hall of
TAG, Block A, 2nd Floor, Campal Trade Centre, Campal, Panjim.

All lovers of Konkani song and music are requested to attend the function
and participate in the celebration of 100 years of Konkani song on

*‘Improving the writing of scripts’ – workshop held*

“If we wish to take tiatr to greater heights, then the writers/directors of
tiatr should not continue to give the audience what the audience wants.
Doing things differently and giving the audience what the writer or director
wants can take any dramatic form including tiatr to greater heights,” said
Shri.Pundalik Naik during his interaction to the tiatr artistes on
14thDecember 2010. Shri.Pundalik Naik was the resource person for the
workshop
on *‘Improving the writing of scripts of Tiatr’* organised by Tiatr Academy
of Goa (TAG) on the occasion of the birth anniversary of Pai Tiatrist Joao
Agostinho Fernandes.

Shri.Pundalik Naik stated that tiatr is the most popular and commercially
most successful dramatic form of Goa. Yet, it needs to be developed in
various aspects of drama in order to be on par with other dramatic forms of
India.

In his presentation, Shri.Naik gave an insight of the process of script
writing and spoke extensively on various happenings in the society through
which a writer can be inspired to script a play or any other literary form.
He made a clear distinction between inspired writing, which is original in
character and adaptation, or re-writing which amounts to depict without any
creativity. He said that a piece of writing with creativity can be called
original writing.

Answering numerous questions from the participants, Shri.Naik expressed
satisfaction over the interest shown by the participants in this workshop.
He further stated that such an attitude from the tiatr artistes will
definitely take tiatr to greater heights in times to come.

Earlier, Shri.Roseferns, Vice-President of TAG welcomed and Shri.Tomazinho
Cardozo, President, in his introductory speech stated that the tiatr
fraternity will be highly benefitted if they interact with artistes and
dramatists from other stages like Konkani, Marathi, Hindi, English etc. He
also said that the standard of tiatr cannot rise in isolation. Hence, there
is need of wider interaction for the benefit of tiatr.

*Meet the Tiatr Artiste ‘Master Vaz’*

A special programme *‘Meet the Tiatr Artiste – Master Vaz’* was organised by
Tiatr Academy of Goa (TAG) on 29th October 2010 at the Conference Hall of
TAG, Campal, Panaji-Goa. Speaking on the occasion the veteran tiatr artiste
Mr. Jose Lawrence Vaz popularly known as Master Vaz narrated numerous life
experiences throughout his journey in the field of Goan Tiatr.

Master Vaz delved on the conditions that existed during that time on the
tiatr stage and disclosed that there was no proper transport, no proper
equipment and no adequate facilities to stage tiatrs during that time.
Inspite of lack of facilities, the tiatrs staged during that time were more
meaningful and enjoyable. This was mainly because of the dedication of the
artistes of that time to the tiatr stage.

Narrating his experiences as an actor who did female roles throughout his
career disclosed that he along with other artistes namely Vincent de
Saligao, Ms.Julie, Remmie Colaco etc. all of them acting as females on the
tiatr stage were responsible to keep the tiatr stage not only active but
vibrant.

He also disclosed that the artistes of that times namely Minguel Rod, Young
Menezes, Kid Boxer and others with whom Master Vaz acted in different roles
and sang numerous songs were all genuinely dedicated to the cause of Tiatr.
It is for this reason that they did not make any money as modern day tiatr
artistes do.

Answering questions from his well wishers, he stated that it was an honour
to him done by TAG by organising such a beautiful programme for the first
time. He stated that although he is not very active on the tiatr stage, he
keeps himself occupied by writing plays for children from the village as
well as for All India Radio etc.

Earlier Mr. Tomazinho Cardozo, President of TAG welcomed the gathering and
explained the importance of such programmes. If the youth of today would
like to know about the tremendous contribution of the tiatr artistes of
yester years to the Konkani stage, we will have to organize more such
programmes so that the memories of these stalwarts of tiatr stage remain
alive for generations to come. Shri. Roseferns, Vice-President of TAG
proposed the vote of thanks.

A brochure having detailed information of the life of Master Vaz was also

PRESS NOTE for favour of publication

TAG to preserve Tiatr Literature

Tiatr Academy Goa (TAG) has observed that although thousands of tiatr scripts
are
written and staged, there are very few tiatr scripts published in the book
form. TAG
intends to preserve tiatr literature for posterity. This can be done by
publishing
books of scripts of Tiatrs, One Act Plays and Lyrics of songs, with or without
music scores. TAG, therefore will publish books of tiatr scripts, lyrics of
songs,
one act plays, etc in book form. Interested script writers and lyricists are
requested to send three copies each of the scripts of tiatr or lyrics of songs
to
TAG on or before 15th November, 2009.

  Promotion of Tiatr music

The TAG has observed that the number of musicians playing blowing
instruments
such as Trumpet and Saxphone is decreasing day by day and that these two
instruments
are very important in the music of the Tiatr. In view of this the TAG has
formulated
a scheme to encourage youth and others to learn to play blowing instruments
particularly Trumpet and Saxphone by providing them with financial assistance.

Documentation of the history of Tiatr

TAG felt that there is an urgent need to document the history of Goan
Tiatr. It
was also strongly felt that priority must be given to oral documentation with
the
help of old Tiatr artistes who are still living.

Hence TAG has decided to document the history and experiences in the field of
Tiatr
by interviewing old artistes of Tiatr which includes writers, directors,
actors,
singers, musicians, persons involved in stage setting, light effects,
background
music, etc. etc. DVDs. It was also resolved to document the history of tiatr
by
publishing books on history, critical appreciation and on any other topics
related
to Tiatr, its song and music.
