Tomazinho Cardozo, former President of Tiatr Academy Goa who was the main speaker on the occasion. It so happened that during the shooting of ‘Cinema Girl’ the cast opposite Ermelin did not turn up and the director of the film asked Ermelin’s choice and she choose Prithviraj Kapoor. Mr. Cardozo cited these excerpts from the book ‘Location Goa’ in which Mario Cabral e Sa has dedicated a full write-up on Ermelin. Speaking further he said that at that time Ermelin was paid around Rs. 5000/- a month which was a huge amount at that time when other actors were paid around Rs. 2000/- to Rs. 3000/-. “One of the most beautiful heroines of Indian cinema Ermelin has acted in about 40 Hindi silent films some of which are ‘Hotel Padmini’, ‘Cinema Girl’, ‘Red Signal’, ‘Children of Storm’, ‘Noor e Bagdad’, ‘Jagad Guru’, ‘Daring Damsel’… Later on Ermelin was married to Saib Rocha one of the greatest writer and director of Goan Tiatr. It was a tragic end of ‘Sudhabala’ the name by which Ermelin was known on the silver screen. She died on the sets in an accident during the shooting of one of her films”. Mr. Cardozo further said that it was a matter of great pride for Goans that an actress of such a depute stepped on the tiatr stage. Vijay Kenkre* * * “If tiatr artistes wish to create a niche for themselves in the field of tiatr, they will have to drift away from the conventional formula and present something which is different from others on the tiatr stage” said Mr. Vijay Kenkre, a renowned theatre personality. He was delivering a lecture on “New Trends in Modern Theatre” on the occasion of birth anniversary of the creator of tiatr, Shri. Lucasinho Ribeiro, at the Black Box, Kala Academy, Panjim on 2nd January 2011. Dwelling minutely on different theatres, such as Indian theatre, European theatre, American theatre, etc, Shri. Kenkre placed before the tiatr artistes numerous unusual happenings that have taken place in the recent past in the theatre. “Modern theatre is over 150 years old and hence many dramatic analysts refer todays theatre as post modern and sometimes post-post modern” disclosed Shri. Kenkre. Speaking further Shri. Kenkre said, for example in the Marathi drama, the spoken word has been replaced by the visuals. He also said that a play is not mere entertainment but it also makes people realize that there is more to it. The combination of language and visuals makes any presentation perfect. Speaking further he said that in this 21st century the drama is going to experience new trends as the writers as well as directors of today are engrossed with innovations and inclined to place before the audience something that is always not conventional. Although there is risk in such attempts, particularly in the commercial drama, very few commercial artistes takes such risks. That vacuum is filled by parallel drama which is presented by amateurs and artistes interested in doing things differently on the drama stage. He said that tiatr in Goa has wide following and hence it is commercially viable. He advised the tiatr artistes to bring out literature about tiatr and see that it reaches to the government authorities not only in the state but at the national level. Such attempts will definitely help Goan tiatr to get recognition at the national level. Numerous tiatr artistes namely Anil Kumar, Joe Rose, Mario Menezes, Cosme Fernandes, etc posed numerous questions to which Shri. Kenkre replied satisfactorily. Earlier President of TAG, Shri. *Press Note* *For Favour of Publication* *Centenary of Konkani Songs on Gramaphone Records* * * Recording of Konkani Songs (Kantaram) on Gramaphone Records completes 100 years this year. The first Konkani Gramaphone Record was produced in 1910. The first Konkani song recorded on Gramaphone Record was *‘Mirmireancho Mog’ *. It was composed and sung by the legend of tiatr stage Pai Tiatrist-Joao Agostinho Fernandes along with Sofia. Konkani Kantar was always popular in the past and that the popularity of Konkani Kantar still continues till date. It was commercially viable to cut discs of Gramaphone Records at that time. Today Konkani kantar is made available on CDs, DVDs etc in greater numbers. It was because of financial success that many recording companies recorded hundreds of Konkani kantaram on Gramaphone Records at that time. Due to technological development, Gramaphone Records became outdated and their place was taken by CDs and DVDs. As such, we observe hundreds of Audio CDs of Konkani kantaram being produced every year. To commemorate the completion of 100 years of the production of Gramaphone Records of Konkani songs, Tiatr Academy of Goa has organized a function on Wednesday, 22nd December 2010 at 4:45 pm sharp at the Conference Hall of TAG, Block A, 2nd Floor, Campal Trade Centre, Campal, Panjim. *Press Note * *For Favour of Publication* *‘Improving the writing of scripts’ – workshop held* “If we wish to take tiatr to greater heights, then the writers/directors of tiatr should not continue to give the audience what the audience wants. Doing things differently and giving the audience what the writer or director wants can take any dramatic form including tiatr to greater heights,” said Shri.Pundalik Naik during his interaction to the tiatr artistes on 14thDecember 2010. Shri.Pundalik Naik was the resource person for the workshop on *‘Improving the writing of scripts of Tiatr’* organised by Tiatr Academy of Goa (TAG) on the occasion of the birth anniversary of Pai Tiatrist Joao Agostinho Fernandes. Shri.Pundalik Naik stated that tiatr is the most popular and commercially most successful dramatic form of Goa. Yet, it needs to be developed in various aspects of drama in order to be on par with other dramatic forms of India. In his presentation, Shri.Naik gave an insight of the process of script writing and spoke extensively on various happenings in the society through which a writer can be inspired to script a play or any other literary form. He made a clear distinction between inspired writing, which is original in character and adaptation, or re-writing which amounts to depict without any creativity. He said that a piece of writing with creativity can be called original writing. Answering numerous questions from the participants, Shri.Naik expressed satisfaction over the interest shown by the participants in this workshop. Press Note *For Favour of Publication* * * *Meet the Tiatr Artiste ‘Master Vaz’* A special programme *‘Meet the Tiatr Artiste – Master Vaz’* was organised by Tiatr Academy of Goa (TAG) on 29th October 2010 at the Conference Hall of TAG, Campal, Panaji-Goa. Speaking on the occasion the veteran tiatr artiste Mr. Jose Lawrence Vaz popularly known as Master Vaz narrated numerous life experiences throughout his journey in the field of Goan Tiatr. Master Vaz delved on the conditions that existed during that time on the tiatr stage and disclosed that there was no proper transport, no proper equipment and no adequate facilities to stage tiatrs during that time. Inspite of lack of facilities, the tiatrs staged during that time were more meaningful and enjoyable. This was mainly because of the dedication of the artistes of that time to the tiatr stage. Narrating his experiences as an actor who did female roles throughout his career disclosed that he along with other artistes namely Vincent de Saligao, Ms.Julie, Remmie Colaco etc. all of them acting as females on the tiatr stage were responsible to keep the tiatr stage not only active but vibrant. He also disclosed that the artistes of that times namely Minguel Rod, Young Menezes, Kid Boxer and others with whom Master Vaz acted in different roles and sang numerous songs were all genuinely dedicated to the cause of Tiatr. It is for this reason that they did not make any money as modern day tiatr artistes do. Answering questions from his well wishers, he stated that it was an honour to him done by TAG by organising such a beautiful programme for the first time. He stated that although he is not very active on the tiatr stage, he keeps himself occupied by writing plays for children from the village as well as for All India Radio etc. Earlier Mr. Tomazinho Cardozo, President of TAG welcomed the gathering and explained the importance of such programmes. If the youth of today would like to know about the tremendous contribution of the tiatr artistes of yester years to the Konkani stage, we will have to organize more such programmes so that the memories of these stalwarts of tiatr stage remain alive for generations to come. TAG intends to preserve tiatr literature for posterity. This can be done by publishing books of scripts of Tiatrs, One Act Plays and Lyrics of songs, with or without music scores. TAG, therefore will publish books of tiatr scripts, lyrics of songs, one act plays, etc in book form. Interested script writers and lyricists are requested to send three copies each of the scripts of tiatr or lyrics of songs to TAG on or before 15th November, 2009. Promotion of Tiatr music The TAG has observed that the number of musicians playing blowing instruments such as Trumpet and Saxphone is decreasing day by day and that these two instruments are very important in the music of the Tiatr. In view of this the TAG has formulated a scheme to encourage youth and others to learn to play blowing instruments particularly Trumpet and Saxphone by providing them with financial assistance. Documentation of the history of Tiatr TAG felt that there is an urgent need to document the history of Goan Tiatr. It was also strongly felt that priority must be given to oral documentation with the help of old Tiatr artistes who are still living. Hence TAG has decided to document the history and experiences in the field of Tiatr by interviewing old artistes of Tiatr which includes writers, directors, actors, singers, musicians, persons involved in stage setting, light effects, background music, etc. etc. DVDs. It was also resolved to document the history of tiatr by publishing books on history, critical appreciation and on any other topics related to Tiatr, its song and music.
