This book clarifies the crucial role of periodical press in the advance of
colonial print cultures and public debates in the Indian and Pacific Oceans.

The Colonial Periodical Press in the Indian and Pacific Ocean Regions is a
venture of the International Group for Studies of Colonial Periodical Press
of the Portuguese Empire (IGSCP-PE), which also invests in comparative
studies and conceptual discussions. Moving around urban shores of the
Indian and Pacific Oceans, it approaches the crucial role of periodical
press in the development of colonial print cultures and public debates in
these regions. By being mostly focused on press from spaces and peoples
under the domain of the Portuguese Empire, it addresses a bibliographical
gap in international discussions moved by the field. The outcome reflects
an investment in offering decentred and de-nationalized approaches to the
colonial print cultures and press histories under study, working as a
platform for regional dialogues and comparative perspectives. The studies
presented allow a better understanding of transits and connections of both
an imperial and a trans-imperial nature, contributing to the consolidation
of comparative approaches in the studies of European empires and
colonialisms.

This volume is indispensable for scholars and students in media studies,
modern history, cultural studies, literary studies and political science.

AVITO LUIS MONIZ [LOS ANGELES/CURTORIM].  Son of the late
Riario Moniz and the late Helena Quadros e Moniz.  Husband of
Grace Moniz.  Father of Dr.  Michelle, Ryan, Marissa and
Lauren.  Brother of the Rev.  Fr.  Joe Moniz, Carol and Lino
Misquitta, Joaquim and Maria do Ceu Moniz, Egy (Egidio) and
Lourdes Moniz, Tony and Melina Moniz, Jeanette and Ronnie
Delgado.  From CURTORIM.

His family sadly announced his passing on September 17, 2023.
Funeral in Los Angeles, USA.

[Incidentally, Avito's brother Egidio is someone we met in
cyberspace, where he has been active.  Egidio is a coffee
planter in Brazil, and has been farming Arabica coffee on his
Fazenda Far in Brazil.  He produces the coffee brand called
Café Goa.  --FN]

SR CELINA [FMCK, SALIGAO] "Life is pleasant.  Death is
peaceful.  It's the transition that is troublesome." This
announcement is about the person who was pleasant and
peaceful but never was troublesome nor looked at the life
negativity or passively.  She gave her best till the end.

"A true religious to the core, Who was brave and strong, firm
and disciplined.  But, a simple fall changed everything.  It
made her weak and fragile, made her passive.  She gave in to
fear and had only one thing in mind of returning to the
Creator.  This person is our dear Sr.  Celine Coelho," wrote
a tribute from her Franciscan Missionaries of Christ the King
(FMCK) sisters at Saligao.

"Last night (Monday), she was admitted in a hospital in
Mapusa where she became stable and we were happy and relaxed.
Suddenly, this morning (Tuesday) at around 9.15, she breathed
her last in the hospital," said the tribute received from Sr
Vandana fmck.

It added: "The Congregation owes her a lot.  She was our
Superior General, Provincial of India, Novice Mistress,
Headmistress...  she gave her services to the Formation House
till May 2023.  Went to the church for mass till August 11,
2023.  She lived for the Lord and for the Congregation.  May
she be rewarded with huge rewards in heaven.  May her soul
rest in peace."

  Coelho, who is active in Saligao village life and a
  number of institutions here.  Tony Pinto commented

  inspiration to many, to me for one, specially

(Goa, Bombay, Mombasa, Dar es Salaam): Beloved husband of
Helen Maria Fernandes (nee Nunes).  Loving father of
Christina (Andrew), Caroline, and Christopher (Anne).
Adoring grandfather of Priyasha, Henry and Benjamin.  Funeral
Mass will be held at Saints Peter & Paul Catholic Church in
Mississauga, Ontario, Canada, on September 23, 2023, followed

ROQUE ALEX MARTIN FERNANDES
March 23, 1931 - September 3, 2023

On September 3rd, we lost Roque, our beloved husband,
father/father-in-law and grandfather.  He lived a remarkable
92 years with kindness and humility.  He was a true example
of a 'life well lived', devoted to his family.  Roque is
survived by his wife Helen (nee Nunes), his children
Christina (Andrew), Caroline and Christopher (Anne), and his
grandchildren Priyasha, Benjamin and Henry.

Born in Mumbai, India, Roque grew up the second-youngest of
four siblings.  As a young man, he began his career in
banking.  He met the love of his life, Helen and they were
married in 1956.  They enjoyed a 67-year love story.  In
those early days, they lived in Goa, India, Mombasa, Kenya
and Dar Es Salaam, Tanganyika (Tanzania).

Roque wanted to have the best opportunities for his family
and made the courageous decision to emigrate to Canada in
1967.  They soon settled in Guildwood Village in Scarborough
and Roque started working at the Bank of Nova Scotia in
downtown Toronto.  He had a successful banking career there
until his retirement in 1996.

Roque was an avid gardener, proud of his flowers, grape vines
and vegetables.  He also enjoyed travelling, photography,
ballroom dancing and fishing.  He was a warm and generous
person who loved spending time with family and friends.  He
was an easy-going peacekeeper; always making people smile
with his sense of humour that will not soon be forgotten.

Roque and Helen moved to Mississauga in 2007.  The family is
deeply grateful to the personal support caregivers for
helping Roque to stay at home as long as possible.

"It broke our hearts to lose you, but you did not go alone,
For part of us went with you the day God called you home."

Roque, Dad, Grandpa, we will miss you dearly but you are
resting in eternal peace.  You will always and forever be in
our hearts.

ABOUT A week ago, Fr Nicholas Dias, the Secretary for Liturgy
Commission for the Delhi Archdiocese, received a surprise in
his inbox.  Officials of the US Embassy had a special request
-- a Holy Communion service for US President Joe Biden before
his G20 Summit engagements in New Delhi.

Fr Dias, who hails from Benaulim, Goa, and has been working
in various apostolates for over three decades, was quick to
respond.  Over the next few days, White House officials kept
engaging to ensure that President Biden’s request for a
prayer service could be fulfilled before the Summit began.

Around 9 am Saturday, Fr Dias was at ITC Maurya, where, along
with President Biden, a small US delegation participated in a
30-minute Holy Communion service.

"President Biden was clear that he wanted to begin his
two-day G20 engagements at Bharat Mandapam with the Holy
Eucharist and a prayer.  Together, we prayed for the
participants as well as for the success of the Summit and for
the global issues that were to be discussed," Fr Dias told
The Indian Express.

While it may have been just less than an hour, for Fr Dias,
it was a golden opportunity to "celebrate faith with a world
leader".

"We had a quick conversation where he shared how his
grandmother was a great influence in his life and in his
Catholic upbringing...  I also got the opportunity to share
how Christianity reached the shores of India and mentioned
the immortal remains of St Francis Xavier that lay in Goa,"
he said.

Fr Dias also shared with Biden a gift from back home.  “I had
just returned from Goa and had a packet of Bebinca (a
Goan-Portuguese delicacy) which I thought would be an apt
gift to speak of my cultural roots.”

And, just before they parted ways, President Biden stopped Fr
Dias and handed over a souvenir he will forever cherish — the
President’s Seal No 261.

Wikipedia explains, "The Subroto Cup International Football Tournament is a
prestigious international inter-school football tournament that is held in
New Delhi, India. The tournament held annually since 1960, is named after
the Indian Air Force Air Marshal Subroto Mukerjee. It is the oldest
national school football tournament in India and was instituted to promote
and encourage the sport at the grassroots level in the country. Students
from different countries across Asia participate in this tournament, making

has had a resident pianist for the past twenty-two years. His name is Ian
Gomes and he's known for being able to play anything from Taylor Swift to
Tchaikovsky.  During his career - spanning an incredible fifty years - he's
also got to play for some rather famous people, including his idol Frank
Sinatra.  Emily Webb went along to meet Ian at his favourite spot …in front

This is a very short recording from her performance at the MoCA (Museum of
Christian Art) this evening, Sunday, Aug 13, 2023 at Old Goa.   More about
Meagan Alphonso Pandian (who traces her roots to the Goan village of
Aldona): She is mainly self taught having completed the ATCL diploma from
Trinity College London in pedal harp performance within four years of
learning the instrument. She has also studied with harp virtuoso Olga
Shevelevich in Germany as well as given harp recitals at the Jehangir Art
Gallery and NCPA.   At the Harp School, the first of its kind in India,
Meagan trains her students in both pedal and lever harp as well as meeting
the harp needs of her students and visiting artists. She has collaborated
with maestro A.R. Rahman, singer Arijit Singh and many other artists. Solo
performances at NCPA (Mumbai), The Bangalore School of Music (Bengaluru),
The Wandering Artist (Chennai) and Chai 3:16 (Bengaluru) have ensued.
Meagan also plays the piano, violin and viola. She has completed the
Licentiate of the Trinity College London exan (LTCL) and Dip. ABRSM on
piano. She won The Young Musician of the Year 2014 award in piano
performance allowing her to give piano recitals in India and France. She
has also performed with The Bombay Chamber Orchestra (BCO), Indian National
Youth Orchestra (INYO) and Indian Youth Orchestra (IYO) in association with
the Canadian National Youth Orchestra (CIYO). Recorded by the Goa Music in

[Goanet-News] Mario Cabral e Sa... Remembering Dr Sharon ...Viva on Mangroves... Seeking assistance

*MARIO CABRAL E SA*  (29 June 1932-19 June 2023), author and veteran
journalist, passed away ten days short of his 91st birthday in
Mumbai/Bombay.  In keeping with his wishes, his family will inter his ashes
at the Divar cemetery in Goa on Saturday June 29, 2023 at 10.30 am followed
by a funeral Mass at 11 am at the Our Lady of Piety Church at Piedade,
Divar.  His family wrote: "We know that he would have loved to have his
family, friends and fellow journalists to be there for one last farewell."
His innumerable journalistic writing, articles and books have covered many
aspects of Goa, especially one on films called '*Location Goa*' (Dept of
Information and Publicity, circa 2004).  The subjects he covered ranged
from a sympathetic study of the Devadasis in Goa, to local history, crime
and more. He was also part of two prestigious films shot in Goa -- Shyam
Benegal's '*Trikaal*' and the Gregory Peck-Roger Moore-David Niven
Hollywood 1980 film '*The Sea Wolves'*.  Full version of both films are
incidentally available on YouTube.

*REMEMBERING DR SHARON:* She was a young, hardworking, prolific historian
Dr Sharon D'Cruz who was popular in the Goa circuit, and who died young.
Activist and sociologist Sebastian (Seby) Rodrigues's tribute to her on her

Most people go to Goa to decelerate. Gourav Jaswal wants to accelerate.

In the year 2000 after the then $1.5 billion internet and media giant
Ziff-Davis invested in Jasubhai Digital Media, a company he had grown from
one to 150 people, Gourav, 44, moved lock, stock and barrel from Mumbai to
Goa. His choice was probably questionable at the best of times, but
particularly so, as this was the first time he was ever going to the city.

Gourav had no business plan, no investment, no co-founders.

Over the next decade, he sequentially catalyzed what became a mini-cluster
of services companies. These companies were bootstrapped and profitable
from inception and continue to thrive. They include SCREENROOT which
focuses on digital interaction design; SYNAPSE which specializes in
business communication and VISUAL JUJU that’s focused on multimedia.

Then, in 2014, Gourav decided to set up PROTOTYZE, a startup incubator.

Startups are a hit-driven business – of the thousands of startups that get
launched every year, only a small fraction of them succeed in any sense.
One way to battle this dynamic is to launch and build not one but multiple
startups in parallel – a startup incubator.

Apart from the obvious “derisked” portfolio approach, where the incidental
risks are spread over many startups rather than just one, there are also
benefits around capital efficiencies, go-to-market acceleration and
centralized systems and processes that abstract away common startup failure
points.

The most famous startup incubator that operates in India is arguably ROCKET
INTERNET, the German-based startup factory, that follows a geo-cloning
model – pick a hot startup from an advanced market like the US and build
“fast followers” clones of these startups in markets that still haven’t
cottoned on to these emerging trends. Rocket’s startups in India include
the likes of FoodPanda and Jabong.

INSTITUTE MENEZES BRAGANZA After a lot of wait and
suspense, the winners come through.  “Mhozo Tallo
Aikat 2023”, the Goa Cultural & Social Centre’s
Seventh All Goa Konkani Solo Singing Competition,
was organised in Panjim on June 25, 2023.  It was
held at the Institute Menezes Braganza Hall.
Musicians backing the singers were Selvyn Braganca
(Merces) on the trumpet; Semy Braganza (Merces) on
the trombone, Roy Menezes (Divar) on the saxophone,
Xavier de Moira aka Paklo on the drums, Bernardo
Cardoso (Taleigao) on the bass, Anthony Pereira
(Divar) on the rhythm, and Walsh F Fernandes (St
Ines) on the keyboard.  Comperes were Agnelo
Fernadnes and Armando Fernandes, both of Borim.
The preliminary round for this event was held on

storey structure located at Vile Parle goanthon crashed on Sunday around
2.27 pm. The duo have been identified as Pricilla Misquita, 65 and Robi

An update said: The Vile Parle #balcony crash in which two senior citizens
fell from the balcony and died. The duo were watching the procession taken
out in honour of the Saint John the Baptist.

Desmond Anthony Bellarnine Coutinho, a Goan expat in the UK, got into the
news due to his connections with Irom Chanu Sharmila, the "Iron Lady of
Manipur", who became the world's longest hunger striker (16 years) for the
lifting of the draconian Armed Forces Special Powers Act in that region.

*Preface*
"lf in my reincarnation, the gods asked me to choose a place where I could
be born again, I would choose Goa because of its natural beauty which has
the quality to perfect the human spirit with creativity and spirituality".
Why does a goan have unwavering ties with their territory? Why does he have
a fathomless love for the land where he lives and its natural beauty? Why
does a goan suffer from nostalgia reminiscing its history that has given
him his ethnic identity? lt is for these reasons that Celina Almeida has
chosen to write a book on "Feasts and Fests of Goa - The Flavour of a
Unique Culture."
*About the author*
Celina Almeida, a citizen of Panjim, holds a Masters Degree in Education
from Bombay University and a Masters Degree in Portuguese from the
University of Goa.
Has taught in People's HS and People's HSSC.
After retirement as the headmistress of the HS school, she joined Don Bosco
HSSC, Panjim, as a lecturer of Portuguese language. She was a regular
contributor to the Goa Today Magazine and at present to the Revista of Casa
de Goa, Lisbon.
She co-authored text books in Portuguese Language for the Goa Board of
Secondary and HSSC Education from levels viii to xii and was instrumental
in bringing about changes in the curriculum
and examination patterns of the above levels.
It will be an honor for us to have you at Fundacao oriente - Delegation in
lndia.

[Goanet-News] Sanchia deSouza, milk and social purification... Goan food workers... early migration to Canada

Sanchia deSouza's recent PhD thesis examined the history of milk and
social purification in and around Bombay in the 20th century. It is
presently restricted on account of university rules, but will be
widely available in 2025.

Sanchia writes: "I had initially hoped to work on Goan food workers
around the Indian Ocean, but I changed topics for various reasons. I
hope to do some writing on that topic now..."

She is also very interested in examining the history of the Goan
diaspora in Canada, particularly the early arrivals in the 1960s and
1970s."  Contact her at sanchiadeso...@gmail.com (John Nazareth has
done work on Goan migration to Canada, and Silviano Barbosa has also
written on early Goan tiatr in Canada.

Sanchia Patricia de Souza is the daughter of Natty and Terry deSouza
and she was conferred her PhD recently from the University of Toronto.

Literati has a room full of second hand books which are sold at Rs. 50
a paperback and Rs. 150 a hard cover book.  If you bring a second hand
book in you get Rs. 20 for a paper back and Rs. 40 for a hard cover.
The idea is to circulate books without any need for membership.  Also,
often the books you find in second hand are difficult to find.

LINKS: Melba Dias Costa was born in Lourenço Marques (present-day
Maputo), Mozambique, on May 26 (year unknown), into a family of
Goan-Portuguese settlers. After completing her medical degree at the
Faculty of Medicine in the University of Lisbon in 1940, she worked as
an assistant to Professor Francisco Gentil, the founder of the
Portuguese Institute of Oncology. Costa continued her studies at the
Sorbonne University in Paris, where she specialized in gynaecology.

In 1950, Costa moved to Luanda, Angola, where she became the only
practicing female doctor in the country. Five years later, she began
working for the World Health Organization in India, until 1959, when
she returned to Portugal.

A progressive woman, Dr. Costa became a person of interest to the
PIDE, the dictatorship’s political police, which regularly surveilled
and harassed her. This included denying her passage to Angola, and
escorting her out of a train to Spain and a plane to the United
Kingdom when she tried to travel abroad. In 1961, she was allowed to
travel to the Roswell Park Memorial Institute of Buffalo to do
oncological research with a Fulbright Foundation grant.

Sometime later, Dr. Costa decided to immigrate to Canada, settling in
Toronto.  In 1963, she opened up her own practice on College Street
and Manning Avenue. Devoted to her work and patients – many of them
Portuguese – it was common for Dr. Costa to take frequent trips to the
hospital to visit her patients in the morning, then follow up with
them in their homes in the evening. She retired in 1981.

In June of 1990, Dr. Costa was awarded the Order of Merit by the
Government of Portugal.  She passed away on May 12, 2007.

Dr. Costa was married to the engineer Fernando Barreto e Costa –
president of the Portuguese Canadian Congress in 1970. The couple had
two children, Fernando and Motilal.

[Goanet-News] Death: Livia de Abreu Noronha, longtime Goanetter

Just got to hear of the passing of Livia de Abreu Noronha, via Valmiki
Faleiro (see below).

I knew Livia both via email (a lot) and the occasional meeting. Her husband
Jorge was also indeed very knowledgeable. I realised this after being
impressed on reading a long edit page article on Portugal by a prominent
Indian editor. It was only after Jorge pointed out 16 to 17 inaccuracies
and errors in the article that it struck home how easy it is to get the
nuances or even basic facts plain wrong! Jorge passed away in recent years,
and I got the impression that they worked very closely together.

Rather than mourning the death of the departed, I prefer to commemorate
their life. What better way than the share a couple of emails from Livia,
which I'm sure she would be happy to have shared here. It gives an insight
into the kind of person she was:

Dear Fred,

A friend of mine sent me the extract of the obituary of my paternal
grandfather which I attach as well as the translation into English done by
my eldest grandson.

Could you kindly have it published somewhere where you think it is
suitable. I remember Miguel Btaganca published something similar referring
a Doctor from Mapuca.

I appreciate very much the work you are doing about the take away meals.

Dr. Adelino Licurgo Peres da Costa
Stricken at his post of honour, he was buried in Curtorim, one of the
villages most severely affected by this terrible pandemic, perhaps the
second or third in this Municipality. Dr. A. L. Peres da Costa graduated in
Medicine and Pharmacy at the Goa Medical School and held several official
positions, such as health delegate at Diu and Damão, sanitary inspector at
Colém and several commissions during the Spanish Plague (sic). His death in
the midst of such a severe crisis redeems him from any of the defects he
shared with us all, and it is clear that his
readiness, courage and assiduity always remained insuperable.

I have very good memories of my growing up in Curtorim and Benaulim, my
mum's village where I was born.  The elders including my father used to
organize "Semana da Aldeia" and it was all fun and frolic as lots of
Curtorcars  who were working in other parts of India, holding senior
positions visited their home villages.

Our good friend Teotonio was always asking me to write down on the village
life but life  in Portugal wasn´t easy  for many years  and the advancing
in age as well.

I hope you and family are well during this "lockdown period".

I have seen the links of your input. Thank you once again.

I remember Livia for always having something nice to say. (I think the
praise on the "work about the take away meals" was misplaced, as I did
nothing myself, but probably was only sharing information about what
someone else was doing in our village.)

Also, that she calls me "Fred" reflects her knowing me online since about
the mid-1990s. In those times, the computer and internet systems didn't
allow usernames to be more than eight letters of the alphabet long.
Frederick, which is nine, got arbitrary shortened, and everyone thought I
called myself Fred! FN

Her email address was moi...@netcabo.pt -- reflecting probably both her's
and Jorge's deep attachment to thinks Goan. That generation indeed seemed
to feel like exiles from their home. Their interest in Goa always struck
me. May happy memories remain. FN

It's amazing how privately-created movies are helping the region to keep in
touch with its language, creativity and culture, when official backed
institutions are far more ineffective (or struggling to pay staff salaries).
