[google-appengine] Re: Data is missing in new version

2009-02-21 Thread Sergey Klevtsov

You can fetch entities that were put to datastore by a previous
version of your app, BUT:
IF your new version adds some data members to your entity classes that
were not there when entities were put()
AND your new version uses those members in queries
THEN old entites will not be fetched

that was just a wild guess, there could be some other reasons, but
still worth checking out

If you put 'login:admin' to all your request handlers in the app.yaml

[google-appengine] Ideas for a bit more advanced search

I want to implement a search that is a bit advanced and searching for
some ideas on how to implement it.

For now, my ranking is an int property for each document, i'll sort the
results by that property.
To search my documents i'll use ListProperty (with substrings, e.g.
for green [gr,gre,gree,green], maybe with reverse too ([en,een,reen]))
and the = operator i think.

But i have no idea how to implement the search operator (search for
Debian 5.0 for example). Has anyone an idea? Or proposals how to
implement it a better way?

Keep in mind that a failure at /just/ the right moment can result in a
gap here. If you create the invoice in the transaction as well, this
can be avoided, but obviously scalability will take another hit.

Another option would be to assign invoice numbers after the fact -
periodically query for all invoices without an invoice number, sorted
by creation time, and assign them numbers in a loop. I don't know if
tax law allows this, of course.

On Feb 20, 3:13 pm, pedepy paul.ro...@gmail.com wrote:
 Hi .. I just stumbed upon a NeedIndexError. I understand why it
 happens, but I dont quite understand the 'motivations' behind it.

 If the development server can just generate indexes for queries as I
 make them, why would that not be possible for the deployed app? My app
 makes extensive use of Expando objects who's properties I cannot fully
 predict. As such, the combination of all possible queries is also
 almost possible to determine before hand.

The development server does not generate indexes, actually. Whenever
you do a query, it loops over every item in the datastore, filtering
for those that match your query. Obviously, this scales rather badly,
but on the plus side, dealing with a query that would otherwise use a
new index is trivial :)

Actually generating a new index requires sorting every item of the
model in question and building an index out of that. As Dan points
out, that can be a very expensive operation, and moreover ongoing
costs for inserts/updates should be a concern.

Since you've not given any details about /why/ you're using Expando
objects, all I can say is that you'll have to get clever with one or
two special properties to manufacture whatever queries you want.

[google-appengine] how to server app on my own domain?

2009-02-21 Thread John

I've created my first app and I would like it to have its own domain
(ie www.mydomain.com). I know this is possible since others are doing
it (ie www.giftag.com). How can I accomplish this? I've already tried
creating a cname but that didn't work, it just loads the google
homepage.

[google-appengine] Re: Counting more than 1000 results.

2009-02-21 Thread John

I don't believe there is a way. I think you will need to create a
counter and store that information.

This article might help:

 Hey guys, i want to know amout of data from specific query. there is
 more than 1000 rows and i can't figure out how to get it, because

 n = db.GqlQuery(SELECT * FROM db WHERE not_allowed = 0 LIMIT 1000,
 2000)
 m = n.count()

 this returns m = 1000, but there is just 352 rows. any idea how to get
 whole amount of specific query?

 thnx

[google-appengine] Re: Entity Equality

 I currently have a need to take a result from a query (which is a
 list) and remove one entity from it. For some reason though when I
 perform the remove, I get an error which says that the entity does not
 exist on the list. How can I do this correctly?

 Code:
 #excerpt:
 #wx and wx2 are db.Query objects with filters...
 #I want to remove wx2 from wx
 direct=wx2.get()
 wx=wx.fetch(limit=50)
 wx.remove(direct)
 #this code returns an error. I know for a fact (through debugging)
 that wx2 entity exists in the wx result.

It's because when you use two different queries to fetch the entity,
it gets represented by two distinct object instances. You can try this
code:

direct=wx2.get()
wx=wx.fetch(limit=50)
wx = [entity for entity in wx if entity.key() != direct.key()]
