[google-appengine] Please give me my quick links back!

2017-03-29 Thread Gwyn Howell
The cloud platform console app has recently been updated, adding nested
menus (awesome), and removed the customizable quick link icons (not so
awesome).
It had become second nature to switch between components of the cloud
platform that were relevant to each specific project by using these quick
links. Now I have to go through the menu system, which a) is an extra click
and b) is much slower.

OLD UI (awesome customizable quick link bar)

NEW UI (awesome nested menus, but no quick links)

Sorry to beef over something so seemingly petty, but this is really slowing
me down (and other devs in my team). It just doesn't make sense why such a
useful feature would be removed.

Anyone else share my pain?

Google - any chance of getting the quick links back?

Cheers :)
Gwyn

[google-appengine] Re: App Engine admin console redirects to Developers Console

2015-10-07 Thread Gwyn Howell
Call me old fashioned by I kinda like the old console for app engine stuff.
The new console is nice an all, but has way too many links to stuff I just
don't care about for day to day use. The datastore viewer is slower, query
interface slow and clunky (over 5 seconds to load), and has missing
functionality, such as ability to query by key. When viewing an entity, the
key isn't even displayed in the view.

Is this the final nail in the coffin for the classic app engine console
then? Gonna take a lot of getting used to to switch over to the new one ...

[google-appengine] dev_appserver.py crash in debug

2015-02-02 Thread Gwyn Howell
All developers in my team are experiencing the same issue with the new app
engine dev server, which hard crashes when debugging via eclipse. The
server runs perfectly in Run Mode, but in Debug Mode, it starts up
fine, but as soon as you hit it with a request, it hard crashes with
nothing logged in the console.

Anyone else getting this issue? And any tips on fixing it?

Re: [google-appengine] Re: Custom domain issue

2012-04-03 Thread Gwyn Howell
I was getting excited until I got to the line With GAE, you use the
“Flexible SSL” option instead of the “Full SSL” option. This provides
encryption between the browser and CloudFlare, but plain HTTP between
CloudFlare and Google.. Doesn't that defeat the object?! If it's only
encrypted as far as cloudflare your still vulnerable for those http
requests between cloudflare and app engine, right?!

Have you tried this service? I might give it a spin. Any advice?

On Tuesday, 3 April 2012 17:29:04 UTC+1, Jeff Schnitzer wrote:

Yes, the connection between CloudFlare and Google is unencrypted (at
the moment). But it doesn't defeat the point - it depends on what
 your threat model is.

If you are sending credit card #s to your backend, this link is a
problem - it violates PCI requirements. For other data, it depends on
your level of sensitivity. The probability of someone intercepting
your data goes from very high at the browser to much, much lower at
your servers. Even Google's SSL service likely terminates at some
sort of border router and traverses their (private) network
 unencrypted.

Anyone in the security business will tell you there is no 100% way to
secure your system, only ways to reduce the risk. I'm sure that
someone out there has real statistics to back this up, but the biggest
threats to data security seem to be compromised machines, first-mile
snooping (FireSheep), poorly secured infrastructure (default
passwords), lost/unsecured laptops and backup tapes, and unscrupulous
employees. Last-mile snooping is not what keeps me up at night.

Then again, if your website is designed to coordinate civil
disobedience in restrictive regimes, I would be a lot more concerned
about the security of that last mile. I might not even consider GAE
an acceptable hosting platform - there are a lot of employees at
Google, and maybe one of them would take a big fat stack of cash (or a
hero's welcome back home) to sneak out a data dump.

Security must be considered in context.

Re: [google-appengine] App Engine incorrectly reporting high number of tasks in the task queue

2012-03-29 Thread Gwyn Howell
That would explain the task queue issue. I did notice a larger number of
instances than usual, but that could have been as a result of the Calendar
API issue.

Regarding your advice to set larger timeouts - do you have best practice
for doing this when using the gdata library?

Note that this is only a reporting issue only and doesn't affect what's
actually going on, so if you are experiencing cost increases that's
something else. Make sure you set larger timeouts on your url fetches.

All you need to do is create a cname record for 'app' to point to
ghs.google.com (did a dns lookup - seems you have already done that). Then,
log into your Google Apps domain CPanel (www.google.com/a/[your-domain]) and
click Add More Services, then enter the App ID for your App Engine in the
Enter App ID field. When you have done that, click Add new URL, and enter
the new url.

Note that this will not work if you have configured all your app engine

[google-appengine] What does the new --high_replication flag actually do?

The development server's datastore implementation now contains logic that

to True.

What does this actually do? There must be an advantage of turning it on, but
I can't see any difference. Is it just a different way to store the data in
the local datastore?

Re: [google-appengine] Re: RequestError: Server responded with: 500, A temporary internal problem has occurred. Try again later.

2011-04-16 Thread Gwyn Howell

The issue seems to be profile pictures. I tried removing my profile picture via
the GMail - Settings - My Picture, then run the test again and it worked
fine. I checked the XML for both requests (one with profile picture and one
without) and the only difference is that the one with had an etag attrb on the
photo link tag. from the documentation
(http://code.google.com/apis/contacts/docs/3.0/reference.html#Photos) this
looks to be expected behavior.

[google-appengine] Re: RequestError: Server responded with: 500, A temporary internal problem has occurred. Try again later.

2011-04-15 Thread Gwyn Howell
Good point about gdata - but i have just updated to the latest version
(2.0.14) and still get the error. there isn't really any logging that
i can do as the error happens from within the gdata libraries. having
looked at that code, it seems that the error is actually being thrown
from google when the request to update the profile is made.

That might be an error on the other end of things.  You might check
for updated gdata libs and/or try to get a bit more debugging info
 into the logs.

Re: [google-appengine] Re: RequestError: Server responded with: 500, A temporary internal problem has occurred. Try again later.

2011-04-15 Thread Gwyn Howell
I appreciate your comments Robert, and I have looked at the gdata libraries
in some depth. However this is code that has been wroking perfectly fine for
12-18 months without a problem. I have checked the HttpRequest object which
sends the request from within the gdata libraries and examined the http
headers and the actual xml which is sent and can see nothing wring with it.
I am fairly convinced the issue is at googles sevrers when the call is made,
as the internal server error is being thrown from there. I have opened an
issue here - http://goo.gl/bovO0

[google-appengine] RequestError: Server responded with: 500, A temporary internal problem has occurred. Try again later.

2011-04-11 Thread Gwyn Howell
Am getting this error on a few of my App Engines:

RequestError: Server responded with: 500, A temporary internal problem has
occurred. Try again later.

Any ideas what is causing this? I notice that there is some scheduled downtime,
but don't think it is that.

Any help or info would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

[google-appengine] Re: How to add Google App Engine application to users Google Apps dashboard

2010-10-07 Thread Gwyn Howell
If you are referring to this page -
https://www.google.com/a/cpanel/your-domain/UserHub, then you can't.
apart from google apps applications, only custom apps added from the
market place appear here (as far as I know).

I guess you could get around it by adding your app to the marketplace
(with a fake, but valid manifest.xml), but not submitting it. then
adding the app to your domain from the draft marketplace listing. I
haven't tried this though
