[Google Maps API v3] Address Verification through Google Map

2011-03-08 Thread prakhar
Hi All,

I wanted to your inputs on a concern that whether Google verifies the
address entered by the web user through Google Map API integration? Also,
does Google provides the address information under defined tags like city
name, county name, state name, country name, area name, zip code?

Please help me out with this as I am in an urgent need for a application
that I am developing.

Thanks,
Prakhar

1. Don't post code, a link works much better.

2. Check your javascript errors:
I get:
Line: 164
Error: 'navigator.geolocation' is null or not an object

Lots of:
Line: 18
Error: Number expected

3. fix your javascript errors.
4. reduce your processing if you need to support IE.

[Google Maps API v3] tracking many StreetViewService queries

2011-03-08 Thread brick
i understand how closures add extra variables to the scope of a
method, and that this enables passing parameters to event listeners.
but! for StreetViewService queries, the listener method is called from
within google's code. i can't put a closure in there.

is there any way to provide an id to my listeners for
getPanoramaByLocation()? if not, i have to do all my queries one at a
time.

[Google Maps API v3] How can i specify start position within custom panorama street view

2011-03-08 Thread m...@creatiworks.ca
I have created a custom panorama set using the code in this example
http://code.google.com/apis/maps/documentation/javascript/services.html#TilingPanoramas

everything works perfectly. The only thing I want to do now is to have one
of my custom nodes be the starting (default) node rather than the entry
point which is an actual (nearest) node on google street view.

I have tried
  panorama.setPano('storefront');
and
  map.setStreetView(panorama);
I've scoured google for a way to do this and cant find anything

can someone help me please?

Now you need to have a close look at term 10.3
[You must not]
10.3 pre-fetch, cache, or store any Content, except that you may store
limited amounts of Content for the purpose of improving the
performance of your Maps API Implementation ...

I read that as precluding use of geocoding data for any other purpose
than connected with a map.

Key? API v3 doesn't use keys. You might be using the js API with a
key. Key validation runs from the client browser to Google, not your
webserver.

Nothing? Your webserver sends a webpage to the client browser, the
action happens there.

Unless you happen to be using kmlLayer functionality?

Yes, the javascript API and its modules.

[Google Maps API v3] Re: 2011/3/2 - New Release

2011-03-08 Thread Jason Jonas
We're using a labeled marker. The labels stopped appearing until I set the
version explicitly to 3.3. I'm not sure what the issue is, but if someone
wants to check it out, here are a couple of links - one without the labels
and one with:

http://spotwalla.com/label-marker-error.html

http://spotwalla.com/label-marker-no-error.html

I have no other issues with the new release, but this is pretty big issue
for us. If someone can provide some information/direction on how to fix
this, I'd appreciate it.

Thanks.

[Google Maps API v3] Internet Explorer 8 SVG Issue

2011-03-08 Thread Nate Irwin
Hello,

I've been dealing with an Internet Explorer 8 issue for the last
couple of days, and just can't seem to figure it out.

Basically, I am trying to embed a Google Maps JavaScript API v3 map
into a web page that is built using the CommonSpot content management
system. The map works perfectly in Chrome, Safari, Firefox, and
Internet Explorer 9, but when I try to load it in Internet Explorer 8,
I get all sorts of JavaScript errors. I should also note that the map
works perfectly in Internet Explorer 8 when embedded into a web page
that is *not part of the CommonSpot CMS. This leads me to believe that
there is some sort of conflict between some of the JavaScript code
loaded by the CMS and my JavaScript code. We are working with the
company that builds CommonSpot on this issue, but I thought maybe
someone on this list might have an idea as to what might be causing
the problem.

Through stepping through the code, I think I have traced the issue
back to a VML issue. It looks like the Google Maps API uses VML to
render controls and overlays when Internet Explorer 8 is detected,
because when the map loads, the navigation tools do not load, and an
error is thrown. Then, after the map is loaded, clicking on overlays
on the map also throws script errors, and I've also noticed that the
'zoom_changed' event does not fire at all.

I have found a lot of information on the web about trying to load the
map before VML is "ready". I am currently using jQuery ready to kick
off the map load. I have also tried window.onload.

Here are two links to examples:

1. http://maps.nps.gov/maps/officeofcommunication/statepages - This is
the map running on a page that is *not part of the CommonSpot CMS.
2. http://home1.nps.gov/state/dc/index.htm - This is the map running
on a CommonSpot CMS page. This is where the problems are occuring.

The code is a little complex, but I think it is important to note that
I have tried paring down the embedded map to just a basic Google Map
with no overlay/customizations at all, and I still get the error when
the map loads.

Any help is much appreciated. I can, of course, provide more
information if needed.

[Google Maps API v3] Printing Multiple Overlays

2011-03-08 Thread Nathan
I am new to using the Google maps API (v3), but I do have extensive
knowledge in JavaScript.

The map I am working on basically displays different colored overlays
over the US states to map out our Sales Rep. regions.

I have the overlays working perfectly and displaying properly;
however, when I print the map, the overlays have white space between
the boundaries and it is not acceptable for our needs. The white
spaces are not on the map when viewed in the browser.

My questions is... Is there a better way to print a map with multiple
overlays? Maybe export it as an image and print the image?

Thanks in advance.

Is the kml on a publicly available web server? (if google's servers
can't see it, it won't work...)

Sorry, a correction

  google.maps.event.addListener(yourStreetView, "visible_changed",

"visible_changed" is an event of StreetViewPanorama object.

[Google Maps API v3] Geocoding confirmation

2011-03-08 Thread caffeinated
I can't work out what to type into the search bar =( I have been
having problems working out where to get some detailed information on
how to achieve this:

I would like to first, use the geocoding service to place a marker on
an addressed location.
(ie. 32 Queen Street, Brisbane, QLD, 4000.)
Then I would like the user to be able to move the plotted marker into
a better location if the geocoder wasn't accurate enough.
Then I would like that marker's new location to be stored as lat lng
coordinates into my MySQL database.
I believe I found something on how to do this a while ago, but I can't
seem to work out what I searched any more.

Any web pages that you think may help me piece the puzzle together
would be greatly appreciated.

Regards,

S.

Google Maps API can be used on public web pages only. You should read
the terms first.

Yes, there is some traffic from API pages that is for search indexing.
With v2 you can set 'indexing=false' but I don't think your security
people are happy with just that.
http://googlegeodevelopers.blogspot.com/2009/11/finding-mashups-needle-in-haystack.html

Anyway you need an Enterprise license.

[Google Maps API v3] How does Google Maps API Really Work w.r.t Code Downloaded Onto Client browser

2011-03-08 Thread Pal
All,

I am trying to figure out how Google Maps API really works (not Google
Maps/tiles, rendering etc) in the browser environment. My issue is as
follows.

We made a simple web page that uses Google Maps Java Script API to provide
pan/zoom and click functionality to a custom image (not a Google provided
map or any other map). The custom image is an image of a network diagram.
We wanted to let users to pan and zoom into the network diagram and then
allow them to click on a point and get some information. We now want to
host this page on an Intranet web server and the Security team is asking us
to explain to them what actually is happening apart from the web server
validating the key from the Google servers.

So, here are my questions:

1. What is actually happening between the web server that is hosting the web
page (that is using Google Maps API) and the Google servers when a User
accesses the web page?
2. Is there some code that is getting pushed from the Google servers to the
browser when the browser is rendering the web page? Obviously, Security is
lot more interested in this item.

I tried to search all over blogs and forums to find some answers and I could
not find any. I would appreciate if you can point me where I can find some
answers and if you can answer these questions, that will be great.

Thanks,

- Pal

[Google Maps API v3] Printing Multiple maps on a page

2011-03-08 Thread Nick
Trying to get 3 google maps to print out correctly over three pages.
Here is the web site.

Everything displays correctly...even when you go to print preview it
looks correct. But when you print it out the kml overlays show up on
both maps (on the first page)...looks like the second map runs into
the first. Is there an easy fix for this? Thanks

[Google Maps API v3] Re: Mobile scrolling troubles

2011-03-08 Thread unoedx
Thank you kilkul for the hinit.
I've tried to use event handlers, but the problem is that the drag
event doesn't give me information about the position or direction of
the dragging, and even if i continue to set the center at the original
position the feeling for the user is the map moving around, i don't
like that behaviour.
With the mousemove event i can get just information about the LatLng
of the point that i'm over, that depends on the zoom and is not
cartesian, well I think should not be impossible to calculate the
amount of pixel to scroll with some spheric geometry.. but, well no
simpler solutions?

So you are suggesting adding functionality that displays an infowindow
on the map based on the data in the fusiontable directly, not using
anything from the fusion table layer. That makes sense at least to
me.

A little less elegant that being able to "click" on the map and see
the information, but at least workable with the current interfaces and
APIs (and probably in keeping with the v3 lighter is better
philosophy).

I haven't tested this, but you may try to leave the map draggable, and
handle the dragstart event in order to move your page (and trigger the
dragend event afterward or something). You might use the
window.scrollTo() to move your page (while dragging the map).

An alternative solution would be to fetch the Fusion Table row data

Sure setTimeout() works. However setInterval() is more suitable for
the purpose.

Without seeing your page, I quess that you have a browser cache
problem. You cannot see the updated file on map because the file comes
from browser cache. The common workaround is to change the filename
with a random parameter.

setInterval(function(){
  var random = "?=" + (new Date()).getTime();

[Google Maps API v3] v3 addListener click to url? not supported?

2011-03-08 Thread projectjerel
Hello,

This is probalby an easy one, i'm just having no luck.
my intent create markers that when clicked link to a url.
everything is ok, sans the functionality i want.

 google.maps.event.addListener(marker1, 'click', function() {
  window.location('test.php');
});

gives me an error when clicked
"Object doesn't support this action"
changed window to document, same result...

I tried this as well
google.maps.event.addListener(marker1, 'click',
window.location('test.php'));
this just jumps to the test.php url as soon as the page loads, this
definately won't work.

I know i can make an info window with a link, but that's not what i'm
looking to do.
I'm not really an expert with java, so i may just be using the wrong
command?

thanks

[Google Maps API v3] Re: What constitute's the need for a "Premier License"?

2011-03-08 Thread WebbWebs
Thank you both. That might indeed add a very different twist to what I
read into Google's information. As long as Google viewpoint is in
sync, that's great. If you will forgive me, I will again clarify the
process, as this is somewhat of a fork in the road regarding whether
my current (and future) development will incorporate Google maps in
any way, shape or form.

1) There may or may not be a charge for the base app (yet to be
decided). Most likely, there will be a base charge of a couple of
bucks.

2) The user enters their place of birth, either by means of an address
string that will be sent to Google for geocoding, or by means of
selecting the place of birth from a map(s). There is NO charge to the
user for entering this data or for subsequently obtaining the lat/lon
of that location. The use of the map is free.

3) This lat/lon information, however, is then used by the app to
create a "natal chart" that is typically about 20 printed pages in
length. There is NO CHARGE for this chart.

4) The user has then the option of obtaining a substantially expanded
chart, at a nominal fee. This version will typically be well over 100
printed pages in length.

5) Again, there is no charge for the use of the maps in either case.

If I read both your definitions correctly, then I believe I am OK with
the free version. Please advise. I do have other ways of obtaining lat/
lon for the paid version, if I need to. I have an internal database of
lat/lon for world cities with over 300,000 records. The Google map
implementation is just a bit slicker and the search is more efficient,
as it seems to work better in those situations where an address has
been entered in a weird way.

I thank you again for your clarifications... greatly appreciated!

Jack

it seems than an address has been entered in a weird way.

I thank you again for your clarifications... greatly appreciated!

This is getting to be a FAQ.

In IE(6) I get a javascript error:
Line: 154
Error: Expected identifier, string or number

This is the code:
var marker = new google.maps.Marker({
position: latlng,
map: mapObj,
//icon : icona,
title: this[0],
});

The issue is the "hanging comma" at the end of the object. IE expects
it to be followed by another identifier. If it is not, it throws an
error.

In general neither the v2 or the v3 geocoder provide results for
things that are not postal addresses.

I don't think the database has changed, so I doubt you are using the
geocoder in v2 to get a result for a hotel (but feel free to prove me
wrong).

Aw rats. I might have this wrong. I'm sure this use of the *map* would be
OK, but if the "pay to find out more" step involves the use of the
*geocoding results* obtained in step 1, that might be a problem for the free
API. I'm not really sure on this one.

You want the preserveViewport option of the KmlLayer set to false.

You may not be able to do that with georss (I don't know), if you use
kml, you can define your own icon in the kml.

You can do all that with the API, but there will be a steep learning
curve as you are new to javascript.

You may want to look at the third party kml/georss parser GeoXml in
the v2 API:
http://infoweb01.dhec.sc.gov/forestry/public_burn_out.xml

It handles georss and is pretty mature. I think it will allow you to
define your own icons.

It hasn't been ported to v3 yet (there is a geoxml3, which parses kml,
but it is nowhere near as mature and full featured as GeoXml).

I don't think it is possible to access a marker on a FusionTable layer
(or a KmlLayer) programatically (at this time).

This is the closest feature request I could find to that:
http://code.google.com/p/gmaps-api-issues/issues/detail?id=3006&q=apitype%3AJavascript3%20layer%20marker%20click&colspec=ID%20Type%20Status%20Introduced%20Fixed%20Summary%20Internal%20Stars

it doesn't look like it is well enough defined to implement though. I
would think you would want the abiltiy to trigger click events on
individual features on the kml or fusiontable layer, not just click on
the layer.

[Google Maps API v3] Having problems with layers and icons

2011-03-08 Thread scfc

I am having difficulties making a map on two different pages work.

I am trying to show points from a georss feed xml file on a google map.

I am new to Javascript etc. and have tried several things from the
Javascript Overlay API v3 webpage but nothing works.

There are several things I want to do with it, but can’t figure out how.

I can get the points to show but can’t get my icons to show instead of the
default one.

Here are the pages so far:

http://www.state.sc.us/forest/scnotifs.htm

http://www.state.sc.us/forest/scfires.htm

1. I want to set the zoom to level on both pages so that it will show out
entire state every time the map opens. I thought setting zoom level would
do that, but it always expands to the fartherest points and if there is only
one point it zooms into that one. I want the state of SC centered with state
lines showing.

   1. I want my icon (burnnotif.gif) to show up instead of the default ones.

(fireactive.gif and fireout.gif for the scfires page)

   1. I want to pull the information from the xml file to populate the info
   window.

(status, location, landmark, county, initial report, forested acres,
non-forested acres, total acres, and cause)

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

That's not quite how it works.

Google doesn't care if you charge people to use your web app. They care if
you charge people to view *their map*.

You can use the free Maps API as part of a paid app if the map itself is
freely available to the general public.

Imagine your app worked like this:

   1. Look up your birthplace on a Google map for free
   2. Pay to find out more

Then you could use the free API.

OTOH, if the app works like this:

   1. Pay to enter the site
   2. Having paid, look up your birthplace on a Google map

Then you would have to get a Premier license.

I doubt it. Looks like you have character encoding issues with the
apostrophes in the text. Try either html entity encoding them, using
UTF-8 for real or changing them to a normal apostrophe.

Also, looking at your xml, it looks like you have several definitions
of each style, that probably isn't a good idea.

It doesn't look like a fine line to me, it seems very clear-cut.
If I can see your API map for free, that's okay on the free terms. If
you are charging people to see Google's maps (even it is only 0.5% of
whatever else you are doing) then Google will charge you.
Only my interpretation, maybe you can see some ambiguity in the terms?

I don't have any control over that. You could try filing a issue
report (against v3.4) or enhancement request (to expose that property)
in the issue tracker. Or maybe one of the Google engineers will pipe
up with an explanation of why it went away, and whether it might come
back.

[Google Maps API v3] Re: Please Help --- This was working 6 weeks ago

2011-03-08 Thread John
Thanks. The map now works in v3.3 but not in v3.4. So, as I
understand it, I'll be OK in the future. That is, will whatever the
problem is be fixed in 3.4 OR, am I using an undocumented feature that
will go away sometime in the future?

In answer to your question, "Why would I expect and event.button
property" The answer is that I'm not any kind of guru, just a
grunt that muddled around until he found an answer so he could
implement a feature that he thought was cool. So, when left clicking
on a marker, the infowindow appears; but to get directions, I needed a
different event to set the coordinates so I choose a right click and
what do you know, it worked! So please don't take that property away,
even if it wasn't supposed to be there to begin with.

By the way, I love the Google Map API. This old muddler can do some
incredibly neat stuff (at least in my mind) without a clue as to how
the objects really work.

[Google Maps API v3] What constitute's the need for a "Premier License"?

2011-03-08 Thread WebbWebs
I'm having a very difficult time determining the specific needs that
make a "Premier License" a necessity. I find Google's documentation in
this regard to be extremely confusing and inconsistent. The closest
post I've found that addressed the same issue was placed Sep 21, 2010
and still has NO replies...

http://groups.google.com/group/google-maps-js-api-v3/browse_thread/thread/a82b929b0b16616a/6ed72783f1a9627d?lnk=gst&q=premier#6ed72783f1a9627d

I'm developing an app that requires the lat/lon of the user's
birthplace. I built a great mechanism by which the user could get the
information either by doing a string search for address/city/state or
by selecting the location from a map. Both methods utilized the
JavaScript API V3 to return the geocoded location. This one piece of
information probably represents less than 1% of the total application
development, but is essential to the rest of it.

THEN, I came across something in Google's API documentation that makes
me think that ANY use of their APIs in a "paid" app requires a $10,000/
yr license... even it the cost of the app was only $0.99.

I'm finding it very difficult to get a solid answer regarding what
constitutes the need for a "Premier" license. I can't imagine that
there could be such a fine line between "free" and $10,000+/yr. Am I
missing something in the legalese?

You might have to use some positioning CSS to actually position the
. No-one here can guess what "not working" means ... no map?
wrong place? something else?
If you are having trouble, show your example (link to it, not a code
dump) and maybe people could help.

That may be true, but it is doing extra processing.

I changed the categories example to put the categories information in
a separate div, which can be put where ever you want it on the page.

It should also solve your problem.

Well, it's a mapping product ; perhaps not best suited for a
race'n'chase game.

If you can find a source of copyright-free maps you could perhaps
build your own mapping system on each client using OpenLayers or
similar.

[Google Maps API v3] Re: detect marker and move if exists

2011-03-08 Thread Esa
If you change that line to following, the marker will be created only
at the first onBlur. Second+ time it doesn't do anything.

var aBusinessMarker = aBusinessMarker || new
google.maps.Marker({ draggable: true, map: map,
position: results[0].geometry.location});

Add a second line that positions the marker every time:

  aBusinessMarker.setPosition(results[0].geometry.location);

If you post a link to your page under work, you get better advice.

[Google Maps API v3] street view simple event.

2011-03-08 Thread moppe
Hello!

I like the google maps api very much. But, I want to do some
streetview stuff.

The most simple thing. I've been trying for days but i can't seem to
find out how it works.

I just want to add a listener when the streetview is turned on, i.e.
when the pegman is dragged onto the map.

It says that visible_change should fire that event, but it doesn't
seem to do that. And i don't want two separate divs, as in the
streetview samples.

I just want to get notified when the map enters streetview.

something like this would be great:

google.maps.event.addLlistener(map, visible_change, function(){
 console.log("yeah, streetview!");
});

[Google Maps API v3] MarkerImage cropped at different zoom levels

2011-03-08 Thread mzda
Hi,
I use different icons to show the points on the map.
The ImageMarker is set to a size of 32 : 32.
As you can see on the screenshot, the icons are not completely shown
(cropped) on the screen. the top of the icons(where the buttons should
be shown) are cut. But if I change the zoom level. the icon will be
shown
correctly.
I give you 2 examples with 2 different zoom levels where you can see
that on different zoom levels, different icons are not shown
correctly.
The images are PNG and have transparent backgrounds.

Thanks for your help.
