Re: [Google Maps API v3] Wrapper? Wrapper? What wrapper?

Hi all,

There was a bug where the shim wasn't being served to every language. The
fix should have rolled out globally now (or soon).

Cheers

[Google Maps API v3] New Release (3.10) and changes to versioning (addition of 3.exp)

2012-08-21 Thread Chris Broadfoot (Google Employee)
Hi all,

We recently released a new minor version of the Google Maps API. This
means that the versions are now:
3.10: Experimental
3.9: Release
3.8: Frozen

3.7 has been removed: if you request it you will receive 3.8.

*Changes to versioning*
Previously, if you requested the API without the v parameter, or using v=3,
you would receive the experimental version. From today, you will now
receive the release version.

If your application requires features in the experimental version, just
specify the version (e.g. v=3.10). Note that this will freeze your
application to 3.10 (unless there is a newer “frozen” version).

If you don’t currently request a specific version and you’d like to
continue living on the bleeding edge, request the API with v=3.exp. This
will always return the latest experimental version.

*Reference documentation*
The link to reference documentation now also defaults to the release
version. If you’re working with the experimental version, please view the
documentation here:
https://developers.google.com/maps/documentation/javascript/3.exp/reference

*Production applications*
We previously recommended production applications specify a minor version
(e.g. 3.5, 3.6). As the release version is now the default, this advice
does not strictly necessary.

If your application relies on new functionality in an experimental version,
it’s still best practice to specify a minor version (such as v=3.10). You
should avoid using v=3.exp in sensitive production applications.

[Google Maps API v3] Upcoming Change to Maps API Services: IPv6 activation on June 6, 2012

2012-06-04 Thread Chris Broadfoot (Google Employee)
Hi all,

As
announcedhttp://googleblog.blogspot.jp/2012/01/ipv6-countdown-to-launch.htmlin
January 2012, Google will activate IPv6 on most of its services,
including Google Maps, on June 6, 2012 at 00:00 UTC. You can learn more on
IPv6 at Google
herehttp://ipv4.google.com/support/websearch/bin/answer.py?answer=1299266topic=8995hl=en.
This page includes a link to a website http://ipv6test.google.com/ to
test your IPv6 compatibility, as well as suggested workarounds in case your
connectivity to Google breaks on June 6.

*What are the technical details of the change?*

In the DNS system, IPv6 addresses are associated to records, while
IPv4 addresses are associated to A records. If your network stack is
configured to use IPv6, it will request records, to resolve domains
(e.g. maps.googleapis.com) to IPv6 addresses (e.g.
2001:0db8:85a3::8a2e:0370:7334). Currently, the Google DNS servers won’t
return an record, even if asked for it, unless your ISP is part
of the Google
over IPv6 program http://www.google.com/intl/en/ipv6/. This means that
your network stack currently always uses IPv4.

On June 6, the Google DNS servers will start returning records, if
asked for them. So if your network stack uses IPv6 in priority over IPv4,
the connection to Google services will be made over IPv6.

*Can I test the effects of the change now, before it is live?*

Yes. You can choose one of these tests to see the effects of the change:

1. Switch to a different DNS resolver (most representative test, but most
intrusive):
HE’s DNS servers (ordns.he.net - IPs 74.82.42.42 and 2001:470:20::2) are
part of the Google over IPv6 program, and currently answer with and A
records for all Google domains. When you configure your systems to use
these DNS servers, your setup will be representative of the situation after
June 6, 2012. This solution lets you test real Maps API URLs with IPv6
resolution activated.

2. Test connectivity on domains that already return records
2.1. To test the connectivity from browsers, just visit
http://ipv6test.google.com/. This page will dynamically fetch contents from
a domain that currently returns records, and report self-explanatory
results.
2.2. To test the connectivity outside of browsers (e.g. Web Services calls
made from your application), then you can do a manual analysis:

   - Connect to http://ds.ipv6test.google.com/ip.js. This URL can currently
be resolved with and A records
   - If the connections succeeds, you will get such an answer:
   - ipv6test.setIP('2620:0:1000:3201:226:b9ff:fe77:8de0');
   - You can see in this example that the IP contains colons (:), so IPv6
was used for this test. IPv6 will then be used as well, from June 6, 2012,
on Google services. Otherwise, you will continue using IPv4 after June 6,
   2012.
   - If the connection does not succeed, this may be due to problems with
your home router, operating system, or ISP. For help resolving these
   issues, visit the Google Help
Center.http://ipv4.google.com/support/websearch/bin/answer.py?answer=1299266amp;topic=8995amp;hl=en

*How does this change affect me?*

The vast majority of Maps API users won’t notice the change, but if you are
using a Maps API with an API Console
https://code.google.com/apis/console/key, and you restricted the use
of this API Console key to a list of IPs,
you will need to add your IPv6 addresses, if any, to the list.

Thank you for your cooperation as we take this next step forward for the
future of the Internet!

Cheers
Chris on behalf on the Google Maps API team

  http://www.ericcarbonara.org/maproom_tutorial/fusionlayer_testing_sit...

However, I'm currently stuck on a few issues that I've seen detailed

  That said…

I'm having issues with tabbed info windows. I've seen several examples

To be specific, I want to create four tabs for any info window. In the
first three tabs I will separate the various data from the columns

  Tab 1:

  {city}
  {state}
  {venue name}
  {venue address}

  Tab 2:

  {promoter name}
  {promoter email}

  Tab 3:

  {comments}

  Tab 4:

embedded calendar or some kind of date picker

I know that this information is provided already many different ways,
but since this project is the way in which I'm teaching myself
javascript...I'm bound to run into some roadblocks! Basically, I'm
just hoping someone could just show me where to put the correct code
  so I can move forward!

  Thanks!,

Re: [Google Maps API v3] Usage Limits: “For-Profit” Sites?

2012-05-21 Thread Chris Broadfoot
Hi Jeff,

No, for-profit in this case does not mean not a non-profit
organisation. See this FAQ entry:
https://developers.google.com/maps/faq#usagelimits

Non-profits and applications deemed in the public interest (as determined
by Google at its discretion) are not subject to these usage limits. For
example, a disaster relief map is not subject to the usage limits even if
it has been developed and/or is hosted by a commercial entity.

Chris

their common meanings, this would seem to ignore sites that are neither
“for profit” nor operated by non-profit organizations, and which probably
constitute a fairly substantial fraction of all sites. Is “for-profit”
really intended to mean “any site not operated by a non-profit
organization”? If so, it would be less confusing if that were simply stated.

[Google Maps API v3] 2012/5/15 - New Release (3.9)

2012-05-17 Thread Chris Broadfoot (Google Employee)
Hi all,

We recently released a new minor version of the Google Maps API. This means
that the versions are now:
3.9: Development/Nightly
3.8: Feature Stable
3.7: Frozen

3.6 has been removed: if you request it you will receive 3.7.

-

In this latest release of 3.9, we've added:
* Country restriction for Autocomplete
(AutocompleteOptions?.componentRestrictions)
* Regions and Cities type filters

You will also get all the features of 3.8 (now Feature Stable), including:
* WeatherLayer and CloudLayer
* Click-to-go/Click-to-zoom in Street View
* orderBy, limit and offset for FusionTablesLayer
* utc_offset and opening_hours in PlaceResult
* google.maps.geometry.poly.containsLocation() and isLocationOnEdge()
* DemographicsLayer (Maps for Business only)

-

As noted previously, we recommend production applications specify a minor
version (e.g. 3.5, 3.6). Though, please take the time to test your
application against the nightly version (3.7) so that we can rectify any
issues that may surface during your testing.

Please post all technical questions over on Stack Overflow:
http://stackoverflow.com/questions/ask?tags=google-maps-api-3,google-maps

Please continue to post bugs to the issue tracker:
http://code.google.com/p/gmaps-api-issues

To see more information about versioning of the Maps API, see
documentation:
https://developers.google.com/maps/documentation/javascript/basics#Versioning

The full changelog for the Maps API can be found here:

Re: [Google Maps API v3] Re: Using Google Maps in Java SE (Desktop Application)

2012-04-24 Thread Chris Broadfoot
Keys are optional, but we strongly recommend using them - particularly if
you're using it in a Java application, since there is no publicly
accessible URL that will be sent via Referer headers.

By using a key you get statistics about usage, and Google will be able to
contact you if there are any problems with your application.

Re: [Google Maps API v3] Re: KML hosted on Google Sites fails to display info balloons properly

2012-02-12 Thread Chris Broadfoot
Thanks all for the reports. Obviously this is quite hard to reproduce. Does
this happen to any particular KML files, or on certain domains/hosts?

KML rendering is very susceptible to network problems, so its entirely
possible these issues are a result of intermittent network problems rather
than a change made to KML rendering.

BTW, Google recommends using Google Sites to host KML files.

Note: There is a time factor. Open an info balloon then leave the
map alone for 5 minutes. Now try to open a different balloon and you
  should see the problem.

I made a small demo map as follows:

I copied Google's sample KML file and related html file.
I edited the KML file by adding 3 placemarks which each display the
  default marker.
I included a short description for each marker.
I put that tweaked KML file on my Google Sites account:

I edited Google's html file to point to the KML file on Google Sites.

I'm on XP using FF9, IE8 and Chrome
  Chrome seems to be OK,
The problem happens in FF9 and IE8.

Here is the demo map: http://www.mappingsupport.com/temp/kml_layer.html

I've been recommending for quite awhile that people use Google Sites

[Google Maps API v3] Important: We’re moving our support forums for Maps API technical questions to Stack Overflow

2012-02-10 Thread Chris Broadfoot (Google Employee)
Greetings Maps API developers,

Starting today, the Maps API team will shift most of its efforts for
supporting the community’s technical QA to Stack Overflow. We will retain
the current Google Groups alias for non-technical discussions and general
announcements that are not suitable for Stack Overflow.

*Why we’re moving to Stack Overflow*
Stack Overflow is a valuable platform for technical QA, and we’ve noticed
a significant trend over the last year, where more and more Maps API
developers have been turning to stackoverflow.com for answers.

Stack Overflow provides opportunities to expand the Maps API community, and
we believe it will foster even greater engagement within our community. In
addition, Stack Overflow has many active experts in JavaScript and other
technologies/programming languages relevant to the Maps APIs. Questions
relating to the Maps API often can be answered by general experts, so we’re
excited to be able to expose some of these questions to a wider pool of
experts.

*What’s next?*
If you have technical questions about your Maps API implementation, please
begin to ask questions on Stack Overflow. You can use the
google-mapshttp://stackoverflow.com/questions/tagged/google-mapstag
– along with a selection of other more
specific tags http://code.google.com/apis/maps/forum/ – to ensure that
Maps API experts can find your question.

If you’re a long-time user and expert with the Maps API, please begin to
monitor tags and build up karma on Stack Overflow – we highly value the
contributions you make to the community, and we want to make sure that your
contributions continue to be recognised by us and the developer community
at large.

We’re excited about the benefits and opportunities that Stack Overflow will
afford our community and we look forward to providing continuing guidance
and support.

Cheers
Chris, on behalf of the Maps API team

Re: [Google Maps API v3] Important: We’re moving our support forums for Maps API technical questions to Stack Overflow

2012-02-10 Thread Chris Broadfoot (Google Employee)
Hi Robert,

There's no plan to migrate any of the content from Google Groups onto
Stack Overflow. In fact, even if it was desirable it wouldn't be
feasible. Stack Overflow is a community moderated site.

You can definitely continue discussing the API here, but please ask
technical questions over on Stack Overflow. I've personally been
focusing my efforts on answering questions over there.

Cheers
Chris

I'm confused - are you using the JavaScript Maps API to display a map, or
Android MapView?

If the former, look at the encoding library.

If the latter, then use the Directions Web Service:

one zip code is from the nearest surrounding group of registered

clients is closest to the user- and they are connected.
The Google Distance Matrix seemed like a good idea for this, but since
we don't use actual google maps (it's all for back-end purposes) the
implementation is prohibited (and I quote):

Use of the Distance Matrix service must relate to the display of
information on a Google Map; for example, to determine origin-
destination pairs that fall within a specific driving time from one
another, before requesting and displaying those destinations on a map.
Use of the service in an application that doesn't display a Google map
 is prohibited.

Straight out of the distance matrix api docs.
So. I really think the API is sweet and I want to use it, but don't
want to abuse the terms of use. Is there any way to use this info, or
some other service that anyone knows about that can help me achieve
 this?
Otherwise I'm going to have to do it all myself (which is fine), but i
don't want to do that because, well, it's not going to be as robust of
a solution. Not enough time for that.
 Thanks!

Re: [Google Maps API v3] custom markers stopped working

2011-12-12 Thread Chris Broadfoot
Thanks Lori,

Some marker seem to load, some don't. I've notified the KML team, I'll let

FWIW it's easy to reproduce:

--- I posted this to the KML group and they suggested I post to this

We have a google map that has been working since June. Early this week
it stopped displaying *most* of the custom map markers, replacing them
with Google's default blue paddle. All browsers and platforms appear
to be affected, though some testers saw more custom markers than
others. All other map functionality and map filter functionality is
 working properly.

See the map with the crazy mix of custom markers and default blue
 paddles here:

 http://climatehotmap.org/

The map links to 17 kmls in the head of the html page (kmls correspond
to the filter subcategories below the map). At the top of each kml
file there's a link to one of 5 different custom markers. See files
 here:

 http://climatehotmap.org/kml/food.kml
 http://climatehotmap.org/pixif/marker-people.png

So far, I confirmed that the custom marker pngs and the kmls are in
their proper location and can be read by the kmls. I did this by
opening several kmls in Google Earth and entering a kml's url in the
search field of Google maps. In both cases, the custom markers display
properly. I also checked with the server administrator to see if
anything was changed on the server (nothing was). Two new markers were
recently added to the food kml, but that data resolved and the map was
working normally for a week after the update.

Any insight/help would be greatly appreciated!

[Google Maps API v3] Map data updates for the United Kingdom, Germany, Finland, and Sweden

2011-12-08 Thread Chris Broadfoot (Google Employee)
Hi all,

Today we are rolling out map updates for the United Kingdom, Germany,
Finland, and Sweden, and launching the “Report a Problem” tool in these
countries on Google Maps. As with previous map updates it is important that
any cache data for these countries that was sourced from Google Maps Web
Services is refreshed following the update. For more information, please
see our announcement on the Geo Developer Blog:

Re: [Google Maps API v3] Re: Where are the ridefinder marker icons?

2011-12-05 Thread Chris Broadfoot
Hi all,

Good news: I've worked hard to reinstate these icons!

They now live over on maps.gstatic.com/mapfiles/ridefinder-images

Example:
http://maps.gstatic.com/mapfiles/ridefinder-images/mm_20_red.png

Even better news: I've just added redirects from the old location to the
new one, so existing maps should continue to function. I still do recommend
you directly link to the new ones, it will save a 301 redirect for your
users (and hence, be faster). You should see the redirects come alive
within the next hour or so.

Cheers

Re: [Google Maps API v3] Disabling POI's InfoWindows - workaround found

2011-12-04 Thread Chris Broadfoot
Hi Tomas,

Just a couple things:
1. Use addListenerOnce, the event listener will only be fired the first
time event is fired after you add the listener.
2. As you said, this technique is very susceptible to breaking changes by
the API.
3. Does this not cause a flash between when the info window is displayed,
and when your code hides it?

For those that don't want the info windows to show when poi icons are
clicked, can I ask why? It would be good to get an idea of your use case -
it helps when we are prioritising development of new features.

In particular, why you'd like to show icons but no info windows - beware
this may potentially confuse your users, who are accustomed to being able
to get information about a place by clicking its business icon.

Cheers

Re: [Google Maps API v3] Again: About the size of infowindows

2011-12-04 Thread Chris Broadfoot
Hi Pil,

Response inline.

On Mon, Dec 5, 2011 at 1:46 AM, Pil wolf...@gmail.com wrote:

 snip

The guys at the maps API team wanted to have control over the
infowindow size, so they implemented an algorithm that adjusts the
infowindow size dependant on the size of the browser window - bummer.
Don't ask me why because I cannot tell you the reason. I also cannot
tell you how this algorithm looks like and which values for the width
and the height it determines, because they refuse to make it public,
i.e. these values are their secret.

Info window size is determined based on two factors:
- the size of the content
- the size of the map (not the browser)

The reason for not making this available is for a pretty simple reason: we
may change it one day, and if you prepare you map to the characteristics of
a particular behaviour, chances are it'll break.

Once we document a particular behaviour, we can't really change it for the
above reason. This prevents us making improvements and changes to the API.
Thus, we leave it ambiguous and try to make the best decision we can.

In fact, we made a recent change that improved sizing of info windows,
where the size is calculated inside the map to account for any CSS the
developer may have added.

There's no malicious conspiracy to make things hidden from the developer!

So to determine the proper size of infowindows is always like playing
roulette against this unknown algorithm: I'd have to open and close
the infowindows constantly, just as constantly I must resize the
browser window at different monitor resolutions.

I'm not sure what different monitor resolutions has to do with anything. If
you've seen different behaviour according to this, please do file a bug
with a *reproducible* test case.

 snip

Sorry to say that, but this looks like pure chicanery - paternalism.
They just wanted to take the control over the infowindow size out of
particular preferences - and they have done it ...

Those are bold claims - I've said it before, but please refrain from making
such statements without some solid evidence. Hint: you won't find any - we
strive to do the best by our users and developers.

Also, I'll cut in before one of the forum experts: could you please show a
reproducible test case of your problems? A test page goes much further to
us fixing troublesome behaviour than accusatory statements.

 google.maps.event.addListener(infoWindow, domready, function()

Re: [Google Maps API v3] LatLngBounds.toUrlValue() renders string incorrectly

2011-11-24 Thread Chris Broadfoot
This is not something we can change without breaking backwards
compatibility.

To answer your question with another question, why are you passing bounds
from the map to the web service? Is this something that could be solved by
using the GeocoderService from the JavaScript API directly?

Here's some code to do what you want (replaces the second comma with a
pipe):

bounds.toUrlValue().replace(/(.*?,.*?),/, function(match, group) { return
group + '|' });

Of course, it's also trivial to implement toUrlValue yourself. I question
the usefulness of it in the API, without a way of deserializing (i.e.
fromUrlValue)

Instead it seems to be rendering it as (with a comma in between):

 http://maps.googleapis.com/maps/api/geocode/json?address=Winnetkabounds=34.172684,-118.604794,34.236144,-118.500938sensor=false

This one little character difference causes the API call not to take the
bounds properly to do the viewport biasing.

 Can this be fixed please?

[Google Maps API v3] 2011/11/7 - New Release (3.7) - editable shapes, DrawingManager, and more

2011-11-15 Thread Chris Broadfoot (Google Employee)
Hi all,

We recently released a new minor version of the Maps API. This means
that shortly, the versions of the Maps API will be:
3.7: Development/Nightly
3.8: Feature Stable
3.5: Frozen
3.4 will continue to exist for a short period of time, after which you
will receive 3.5 when requesting 3.4 or below.

-

In this release, we've added:
 * Editable shapes (polygons, polylines, circles, rectangles)
 * DrawingManager for adding new overlays
 * New visual style of default controls
 * PlaceResult fields: website and international_phone_number
 * ElevationResult field: resolution

See the blog post for details about the new drawing and editing functionality:
http://googlegeodevelopers.blogspot.com/2011/11/make-your-map-interactive-with-shape.html

... and documentation:
http://code.google.com/apis/maps/documentation/javascript/overlays.html#editable

-

As noted previously, we recommend production applications specify a
minor version (e.g. 3.5, 3.6). Though, please take the time to test
your application against the nightly version (3.7) so that we can
rectify any issues that may surface during your testing. Please post
bugs to the issue tracker and/or post to the developer forum:
http://code.google.com/p/gmaps-api-issues
http://groups.google.com/group/google-maps-js-api-v3

To see more information about versioning of the Maps API, see documentation:
http://code.google.com/apis/maps/documentation/javascript/basics.html#Versioning

Re: [Google Maps API v3] Change the cursor to an image?

Hi Lecter,

The cursor properties are like in CSS - you will need to specify two

provided by the browser.

Try one of these:
draggableCursor:'img/cat.png,default'
draggableCursor:'img/cat.png,pointer'
draggableCursor:'img/cat.png,crosshair'

Re: [Google Maps API v3] Optimised Markers consume the Map mousemove event

2011-10-17 Thread Chris Broadfoot
Hi Martin,

This does indeed look like a bug. The only point of contention is whether
the bug lies with optimized markers, or unoptimized markers. In reality,
clickable (default true) means that the overlay (marker, polygon,
polyline) captures all mouse events.

I'll raise this issue with the team.

Thanks,
Chris

 Hi All.

I've started a new thread for this subject - it follows on from this
recent thread about MarkerImage and optimised Markers:

 https://groups.google.com/group/google-maps-js-api-v3/browse_frm/thread/ac0d90c91ecec6a0/51a0cc033dba3866?hl=en#51a0cc033dba3866

I've run into a problem with optimised Markers and the Map mousemove
 event...

 Here's a project i've been working on:

 http://developer.martinpearman.co.uk/markers_event_layer/demo/index.htm

 and

 http://developer.martinpearman.co.uk/markers_event_layer/demo/index.htm?eventtype=click

I'm detecting click OR mouseover and mouseout events on all markers
under the mouse - not just the top most marker.
My first link is the mouseover and mouseout version, my second link
 the click version.

Markers consume the Map click event so my single Map click event
listener detects no Marker clicks unless you set the MarkerOption
 clickable to false.
My code does this and it works as desired except i'd like the cursor
to change when over a Marker - that doesn't happen when the
 MarkerOption clickable is false.

 http://code.google.com/apis/maps/documentation/javascript/reference.html#MarkerOptions

Anyway that demo defines a MarkerImage with a scaledSize set to the
same size as the MarkerImage's size.
If you read the thread i linked to you'll find that setting a
 MarkerImage scaledSize forces non-optimised Markers.
So i changed my demo to pass null as scaledSize in the MarkerImage
connstructor and thought that would give me optimised Markers and my
existing code would still work but it doesn't.

Optimised Markers by default consume the Map mousemove event so my
demo's mousemove event listener never executes.
Much like the demo's click event listener never executes unless the
MarkerOption clickable is set to false.
(Non-optimised Markers with MarkerOption clickable set to true
(default) do NOT consume the Map mousemove event).

Setting an optimised Marker's MarkerOption clickable to false stops
the Marker from consuming the Map mousemove event and my code again
works as desired - albeit with no change of cursor when over a Marker.

Here's a simple map that demonstrates this behavior:

 http://developer.martinpearman.co.uk/markers_event_layer/mousemove_event/mousemove_event.htm

On that map, Markers are optimised and clickable - both these options
 are the defaults.
Move the mouse over a group of Markers and you'll see the Map
mousemove event listener stops updating the mouse position top center
 of map.

 http://developer.martinpearman.co.uk/markers_event_layer/mousemove_event/mousemove_event.htm?optimized=0

That map uses non-optimised Markers that are clickable by default and
the Map mousemove event listeners executes even when the mouse is over
 one or more Markers.

 http://developer.martinpearman.co.uk/markers_event_layer/mousemove_event/mousemove_event.htm?clickable=0

Markers on this map are optimised but NOT clickable and the Map
mousemove event listener executes as desired.

The documentation for Map events points out that the Map click event
does NOT fire when a Marker is clicked on (it doesn't mention
MarkerOption clickable), but doesn't mention that the Map mousemove
event does not fire when the mouse is over an optimised Marker.

So my question - is this a bug or the intended behavior?

For my project i can set the MarkerOption clickable to false so BOTH
my Map click and Map mousemove event listeners execute as desired and
 it will work.
But i'd rather that at least with the Map mousemove event i can leave
clickable set to true so that the mouse icon changes to a pointer when
 over a Marker.

Thanks for reading my long(ish) post!

 Martin.

the *place_changed* event when I select that address from the shown list.
This problem appears to only be evident primarily when I have not specified

address appears to be found appropiately.

To double check it wasn't something I was doing I am able to replicate the
issue on the demo example at:

 Google places

The address I can trigger this repeatably on is when I type in *Auckland

from the returned results. When I do this nothing happens. However when I
select geocodes only selecting this option appears to work.

I would like to have both establishments and geocodes searching abilities
 if possible.

Any ideas or help would be appreciated.

Nevertheless, I've filed this problem with the data team.

Re: [Google Maps API v3] Inverted Fill Color For A Circle

2011-10-10 Thread Chris Broadfoot
Unfortunately this isn't possible with the google.maps.Circle class.

It is, however possible using a google.maps.Polygon, where you can create
holes. You can create your own circles using the computeOffset method in the
google.maps.geometry.spherical namespace:
http://code.google.com/apis/maps/documentation/javascript/reference.html#spherical

Here's a demo I wrote a while ago, it could serve as a decent starting
point:

but double the opacity. The are outside of the third ring would be the
 most heavily colored.

The circles are service zones. The further out from the center, the
more the trip charge. My application allows up to 7 concentric
circles/zones. The shading is meant to give the dispatcher a clue as
to which zone a marker is in. I chose three circles to simply things.

Check out the HTML5 geolocation API. You probably want watchPosition:

Spec: http://dev.w3.org/geo/api/spec-source.html#watch-position

Interesting. I hadn't thought about a copyright issue, since the API is
 free to use.
Anyway, I have no problem with making a custom marker. You can see them on
our African American Walkingtour prototype here:

 http://centuries.digitalgizmo.com/team/walkingtour/afram_walkingtour/maptour_kml.html

What I need is the same functionality, i.e. the marker must move around
with you as you walk, in real time.

If that is not proprietary to Google Maps, can you point me to the code?

 Thanks,
 Tony

Re: [Google Maps API v3] How to draw a line incrementally (part by part) between two points on the map?

2011-10-02 Thread Chris Broadfoot
Hi Shiva,

You'll want to animate using setTimeout setInterval:
https://developer.mozilla.org/en/window.setTimeout
https://developer.mozilla.org/en/window.setInterval

... you can calculate a point between two LatLngs using the
google.maps.geometry.spherical.interpolate function:
http://code.google.com/apis/maps/documentation/javascript/reference.html#spherical

Then you can draw a PolyLine using the start LatLng, and the interploated
LatLng. Make sure you set geodesic: true in the options:
http://code.google.com/apis/maps/documentation/javascript/reference.html#PolylineOptions

Hope this gets you on your way!

It would definitely affect performance. Updating the innerHTML is an

reflow of the page). This can be slow in some browsers.

I'd suggest updating the DOM only every N milliseconds.

Re: [Google Maps API v3] Re: detour logic

2011-09-26 Thread Chris Broadfoot
I've reopened the bug. As far as I know this is not technically feasible at
the moment, but that may change in the future if a new Directions backend is
implemented. You'd probably see it on maps.google.com first, though.

To the OP - as above, it's not possible to tell the DirectionsService to
route around a point.

If you're talking about rendering a detour that you already have knowledge
of, this is possible.

Re: [Google Maps API v3] REQUEST DENIED on brand new API key...

Hi Paul,

The Directions service does not require a key. The following URL works fine:

 from development or in production.

We're using the google-direction Ruby gem:
 https://github.com/joshcrews/google-directions-ruby

A sample of what we send:

 http://maps.google.com/maps/api/directions/xml?key=[** obfuscated/
 removed
 **]sensor=falseorigin=53.3644,-2.27519destination=53.,-2.85

 What we get back:

 ?xml version=\1.0\ encoding=\UTF-8\?\nDirectionsResponse\n
 statusREQUEST_DENIED/status\n/DirectionsResponse\n

If somebody from Google can look at this I'd be grateful! IP addresses
 below if that helps:

 Development: 94.193.82.41
 Production: 46.20.228.33

 Thanks,

Re: [Google Maps API v3] Autocomplete results returns with no Lat/Lng

 Hello,

Sorry I don't have any test code up at the moment, but this seems to be
something inherent to the Places Autocomplete code and not my
implementation... I'm developing a web app in sync with another developer
who's doing it for iOS. We're using the Places Autocomplete libraries (me
the JS and he the Web Service). The site/app is centered on NYC so we're
mostly searching around Manhattan. I noticed a few days ago and he recently
confirmed that certain searches that come up in the autocomplete predictions
don't return a latitude and longitude - sometimes. I think my coworker has
narrowed it down a bit since he was playing with the predictions.

With the map bounded to NYC, typing in 'H' brings up 'Home Depot, 3rd
Avenue, NY' as an option. If you select that, it doesn't return the
Lat/Lng. Now with it selected if you click on the autocomplete textbox it
brings up 'Home Depot, 3rd Avenue, NY' as a suggestion again. Clicking that
will now return the Lat/Lng. My coworker noticed that if you type in 'Hom'
and click it it will respond with the Lat/Lng so he's not calling the
autocomplete code until they have entered at least 3 characters to get
around this, but I don't seem to have that luxury using the JS version.

Is this something I should report as a bug or is something else going on
 here that I'm missing?

 Thanks,

 Jim

Please refer to the Earth API group:

As far as I'm aware, a key is necessary for the Earth API. The Maps V3 API

Re: [Google Maps API v3] Re: Transit_Stop How to extract information for specific areas?

2011-09-17 Thread Chris Broadfoot
Rhys,

I'd look at some PDF libraries. If the PDF is formatted well, it can be easy
to extract. For example:
http://www.unixuser.org/~euske/python/pdfminer/index.html

As Rossko said, the Places API is not suitable for this sort of use case.

Google supply data for use with maps, it's not on free issue for other

I don't think there is a way to scrape what you want anyway.
Try asking the transit company for the info.

There's not really a name for it, but in essence it's a path finding

Indeed. This would have been in 3.4, which is now the lowest version you can
request (now stable release).

Note that you wouldn't have had a hole on Android, even using 3.3 or below.

I'm not sure which release that was, but it's possible that the
release it superseded has been retired and the release of April 14 is
the earliest you can get. That means you now have to use Canvas
graphics, and Canvas graphics require different winding directions.

It might have been helpful if that requirement had been explicitly
stated in the release note; but it is a feature of Canvas.
