I am not sure it will stop working... The way I read the posts is that 
retrieving of photos and albums will remain to function as it does now, but 
the API will no longer allow us to create or alter any content. But since 
all my Picasa photos are in Google photos as well and vice versa, I suppose 
if I use Google Photos to upload a photo, I al still able to retrieve it 
with the Picasaweb API. 
I'd just like to get an official statement that this is true. I use this 
for websites as well, and if this becomes a read-only API it is fine with 
me. I just want to know how I am supposed to get content into it then.

I might have a look at S3 as well, thanks for the suggestion.

I used Picasa to store images which I show on my website. But since this 
seems to be no longer a good idea I switched to Amazon S3. Not free, but 
not expensive either.

Yes, I do use the desktop application, fun and easy to use for an
amateur...  I've been very busy placing all the irreplaceable shots,  very
old ones etc into albums and sending them off to Google +  ... so no harm
done and I'll just wait and see what transpires...  by the way where are
you based...  I'm in Australia,  I do a great many travel and history blogs
which is where the Picasa ease of use comes in handy...

So it depends what you’re talking about. If you’re talking about Picasa the 
desktop application (where you edit your photos) then it will continue working. 
My wife also uses Picasa to view/edit images, and with the Wordpress plugin 
uploads images directly to her site. All of this is basically offline stuff. 

It doesn’t sound like you actually use Picasaweb - the online version of Picasa 
- directly, so perhaps you won’t be impacted at all.

API'S and over written etc...  I primarily used Picasa to take photos from
my camera or scans from my printer, and then to edit and crop and present
on blogs to my hearts content...  if I can continue to do this I'll be like
you, I'll stay with the one I know...  at 77 years of age I'm too old to
learn new tricks...

Flickr provide 1TB of photo storage free, so that’s an option. There’s a few 
other services too. I guess it depends what you actually use Picasa for. 

Personally, I’m leaving my stuff in Google Photos - I can’t be bothered to move 
to an alternative service when there seems little point to do so. The current 
upload/download APIs will continue to work, even if you can’t modify photos in 
Picasa online (but I never did that anyway). 

I’ll continue to use the Picasa Desktop app until something better comes along 
(I haven’t used its sync facility for around a year now, ever since I wrote my
