I know that personally my mobile number has never changed since I got it, so
in some sense it makes for a decent identifier.

But there are people in countries where porting isn't possible yet. There
are also people who don't have a mobile phone (and then can't port their
local number due to moving exchanges.) Then there are people who move
countries entirely. It's the same person, yet the identity still changes.

Worse, your identity can become someone else's next week, when they sign up
for a phone plan and inherit your number. :-(

My train of thought then goes like this:
   * Some kind of GUID would be unique enough, and can't be argued to be
tied to a service.
   * Then you need the mechanism which proves "this real world ID belongs to
this GUID"
   * So the GUID would also want to be secret.
   * Secret? Isn't that like a private key? Why don't we just use private
keys for all this? Why don't we use private keys to log into sites instead
of the cross-site authentication hacks in use today?

Try searching for with:public -with:bloggy. That searches for any public
wave, that don't have bloggy as a participant too, as everything with bloggy
as a participant are made public by default, though you can remove this if

[Google Wave APIs] google toolbar button

2009-10-01 Thread qMax

Just created a toolbar button for gogle wave (not sandbox).
(i put it into gallery, but i guess that toolbar developers should
make it better)

And i've no clue how to make it show new messages in inbox, like gmail
button do.
It requires RSS/ATOM feed for that.

Is there something like this for wave?

[Google Wave APIs] Re: Wave Identity

2009-10-01 Thread GH

It is an interesting idea. Lets say everyone can obtain a unique
identifier, and that identifier is used to lookup your e-mail/wave
address (and why not other things, too, like your SIP address,
etc...). The lookup mechanism could actually be DNS. Guess what,
this practically already exists (and it is free)! It is called the E.
164 ITU-T:
http://www.e164.org/wiki/AboutE164

This uses a phone number as your unique identifier, which may be an
acceptable solution now that numbers are relatively portable. Plus,
if you don't already have a phone number pretty soon you may be able
to get one for free from Google Voice.

While this seems like a great idea, there would be problems you would
have to work out. If you can look up peoples' e-mail addresses via
DNS, what will stop spammers from easily obtaining your e-mail
address, etc...

Hi Mike-

You can add robots that you know the addresses of. For instance, I
just added emoticon...@appspot.com to a Wave. You can look for robots
in the samples gallery (http://wave-samples-gallery.appspot.com/) but
keep in mind that they are only samples. We don't have any that we
think are ready to be "unleashed" on the masses yet.

[Google Wave APIs] Problems loading flash in my gadget.

2009-10-01 Thread Dave Peck

Hi,

I wrote a tiny gadget (a collaborative drum machine) at the Wave
hackathon earlier this year.

Now that wave is out, I'm trying to get it working again.

The gadget URL is http://codeorange-entertain.appspot.com/drum/drum-gadget.xml

It depends on soundmanager2, a SWF and javascript library, to play its
sounds. I load the SWF successfully into a div of my choosing using
the gadgets.flash.embedFlash() API. But for some reason, the
soundmanager code is unable to find the swf via the DOM, or unable to
communicate with it. Is embedFlash() actually adding a nested div
somewhere?

As an unrelated question, is there a testing sandbox where I can load
my gadget _without_ the rest of the wave interface? It would make
debugging a little quicker, I think. I tried just opening the IFRAME
URL for my embedded gadget, but this apparently doesn't fully work...

Thanks,
Dave

Neat! I patched Embeddy using your googlewave.com embed code. The root
URL is written dynamically now, so it *should* work everywhere. I
didn't have much time for testing, though. If you can give it a spin,

Thanks for that suggestion. I just added it to one of my preview
account waves and it spits this out:

Paste this snippet wherever you want the wave to show up:

And this one right before your tag:

http://wave-api.appspot.com/public/embed.js";>

  var wave =
new WavePanel('https://wave.google.com/wave/');
  wave.setUIConfig('white', 'black', 'Arial', '13px');
  wave.loadWave('googlewave.com!w+xqoDO1w0A');
  wave.init(document.getElementById('wave'));

Hope this helps.

I doubt there is a policy of locking out early adopters, in fact the
Sydney, Australia based Wave development team have been very
accommodating to us developers, at least as far as I can tell.

If the roll out of the Wave follows the pattern set by the other
Google services, there will be an ongoing ramp up of users as the
development and administration teams come to terms with the load and
usage patterns that emerge from having 100k people chatting with each
other in real time.

Sometimes the requested files in the the embedded iframe timeout. It's not
perfect by any means.

You can add the temporary bot blog-...@appspot.com to your wave, it will
report the wave ID and some sample embed markup that is reported to work. You
can probably modify/tweak things from there.

[Google Wave APIs] Re: Public waves?

2009-10-01 Thread Silicon Dragon
Yes, I do have an active account for wave.google.com (I've had one for
sandbox, and got auto-invited there). However, unlike in the sandbox, public
waves aren't appearing in my inbox (which I consider a big improvement! less
clutter). By the current configuration, however, I see no ways to seek out
topics, or "channels" of waves (similiar to what newsgroups are to e-mail)
to which I can "subscribe". The with:public seems to be a bit too much
cluttered.
There seems to be a bot called "groupy-the-bot"; however, the latest
available sources
point to the
23rd of Jun (massively outdated).
Anyone knows of any other existing solution?

I think, some of you are expecting the invite to come to your Gmail account.
But if you are already a sandbox user, you would get the invite to your sandbox

Heh, and there was me doubting my memory, when perhaps that's not the
problem.

I've had people asking me for invites and I've had to say "sorry, I
forgot my password" - and now I find out it might not be that!

Earlier I re-signed up (as stated in the sticky message), but I've
still not received any new login details or anything.

Very frustrating.

And very disappointing that Google are unable to automate their own
systems - even if Google Apps is manual by default, you'd think they
would have people with the skills to do a basic reset script!

[Google Wave APIs] beginner trying to embed....

2009-10-01 Thread Jlcarroll

So I was trying to embed a wave, and I downloaded the hello world code
here:

http://code.google.com/apis/wave/embed/guide.html

and then I tried to change things to point at my wave... I changed the
initialize as follows:

function initialize() {
  var wavePanel = new WavePanel("https://wave.google.com/wave/";);
  wavePanel.loadWave("252BQXjoHNhAA.9");
  wavePanel.init(document.getElementById('waveframe'));
}

I get a blank page

If I change the var wavePanel to add a #restored to the end I get my
whole interface with a bland wave opened... I think that I understand
what is happening there, so I assume that my problem is with the id, I
am loading an empty wave because my wave id is wrong?

I tried a few variants for the wave id as well such as:

wave:googlewave.com!w%252BQXjoHNhAA.9

googlewave.com!w%252BQXjoHNhAA.9

and

!w%252BQXjoHNhAA.9

The instructions say to use the debug button to find the wave id, but
that isn't there any more in the preview release. From what I read on
here, it is now in the url, but it is not entirely clear how much of
that url should be included in the wavePanel.loadWave field.

Thanks.

[Google Wave APIs] MSDN at least takes care of its developers...

Hi all,

I also hoped to get an invitation by yesterday's rollout. I've
registered more than a month ago - also with two other coporate e-mail
accounts - and waited. No answer. Nothing.

Could it be that you guys intentionally lock out people from outside
the U.S.? I'm very eager to check WAVE with a new project I'm doing,
but your policy of running a hype on the one side and locking out
early adaptors at the same time gets very, very annoying.

p.s.: please realize that there are people that are relatively new to

development environment dedicated to WAVE and according to the
guidlines provided provided already... why do you lock us out?

As far as things go right now, i believe you need to be logged into the wave

activated account for wave.google.com .

It doesn't just not solve the problem entirely, it doesn't solve the problem
*at all*. It replaces one ID which uses a domain name owned by the host,
with another ID which uses a domain name owned by the host. No difference
at all.

I think Wave identity should be managed like server domain names.

Some things you might be forgetting:

   1. Wave federates, so you could host your own server and thus get an ID
which will live longer.
   2. Google Apps will get Wave eventually, so you won't even *need* to host
your own server to use your own domain.

2009-10-01 Thread Antonio Zamora
h your code doesn't work for me neither
the only differences between your code and mine ... are these:

http://wave-api.appspot.com/public/embed.js";>

 var wave =
   new WavePanel('https://wave.google.com/wave/');  //
Remove the 's' ... use the unsecure protocol
 wave.setUIConfig('white', 'black', 'Arial', '13px');
/ Change all your quotes [ ' ]  for double quotes [ " ]
 wave.loadWave('googlewave.com!w+QXjoHNhAA');
 wave.init(document.getElementById('wave'));

And thats it ... maybe if you make those changes you can make the waves
displayable I'm not really sure ... but give it a try ...

[Google Wave APIs] Re: Is it possible to import GWT gadget into wave

2009-10-01 Thread papyromancer
As far as I've been able to tell html5 can't specify a codec because of
patent issues, and I don't know the audio capabilities matrix of browsers (I
think a lot of people have focused their testing on the video tag).
I would start by trying out mp3, I bet that's the safest choice, but firefox
may not support it due to the patent thing, in which case, ogg should work.
 If it's anything like the video tag, you should be able to specify two
different streaming urls and the browser will pick its favourite.

[Google Wave APIs] Profile pic/Avatar

2009-10-01 Thread Graham Anderson

Does anyone else experience their profile pic not being displayed after re-
logging or refreshing after a crash? The pic still shows in the "edit profile"
wave but not in the list of participants, the wave list or the contact list.

:(

[Google Wave APIs] Robot destruction

2009-10-01 Thread Graham Anderson

Are there plans for ACL over waves going to be implemented soon? I ask because
the main public FAQ wave in Wave preview just got the title blip (main
content) nuked by someone adding a random bot to the wave.

Since there is no access control over public waves at the moment, I fully
anticipate the griefers/trolls will make an appearance soon. Should we rely on
the incoming ACL tools to stop the use of malicious bots or accidental bot
usage or is there any way to report badly/maliciously coded bots at the
moment?

until the embeddy sample gadget getś updated, you can find out the current ID
of your wave and see some sample code (Embeddy clone) to embed it in a
blog/page. Add the robot blog-...@appspot.com to your wave. Delete the blips
after you have finished with the info.

I've disabled it's main functionality for now, all it will do as a convenience
is report wave ID and sample code for embedding.

[Google Wave APIs] Re: 2 Identical Robots - 1 Receives JSON data and behaves properly, the other does not

2009-10-01 Thread Dagfinn Parnas

I experience something similar.
Through the appengine logs I could see that /_wave/robot/jsonrpc was
never called.
I tried changing the capabilities.xml, but nothing I did reflected on
the appengine side (even if the capabilities.xml was intentionally
invalid xml, no errors).

I tried to change the deploy a robot from a different appengine
project, and it failed to.

So I came to the conclusion that the appengine application had some
how gotten corrupt.

(then I started a new project and didn't experience the problems)

[Google Wave APIs] How can I add attachments?

2009-10-01 Thread GH

I am trying to create a gadget/robot that adds an attachment
(specifically an image) to a blip. I want to avoid saving the image
to a web server and then reference it by URL. It seems much more
convenient to store the image in the wave as an attachment (instead of
externally).

To do this in a Java Robot I think I would need to call:
BlipImpl.getDocument().appendElement(new Image(attachmentId,
caption));
However, this references an attachmentId and I haven't been able to
figure out how to add the attachment itself. Is there a way to
accomplish this?

I noticed you can drag and drop images into blips (which adds them as
attachments). Does this mean there is some way to add attachments
through Javascript (in a Gadget without a Robot)? It would be nice if
there was, but after reading the Gadget API it appears there isn't.

I could add images through Javascript by setting an img tag's src
attribute to something like this:
data:image/png;base64,...
The base64 representation of the image could be stored in the wave
state as a key-value pair, but would that be a bad idea since it could
be very large?

Thanks!

[Google Wave APIs] Playback and non-text structures / widgets

2009-10-01 Thread Sophie

I love how changes to a document are highlighted (normal + in
playback).

If I have an extension that is not purely a document, but has some
structure and its own presentation (e.g. the Maps gadget, or the
lonely planet Trippy gadget which combines map + unscheduled items +
schedule), how does the change highlighting + playback extend to cover
these, in normal view and in playback?

i.e. can I have customized change markers on maps or on other custom
presentation?

Thanks

[Google Wave APIs] Re: Is there a way to Embed the new google waves preview using the embed API?

2009-10-01 Thread Antonio Zamora
well... I was unsuccesfull to place embe...@appspot.com placed correctly the
new wave preview Id
as you can see in the generated code ...

http://wave-api.appspot.com/public/embed.js";>

  var wave =
new WavePanel('https://wave.google.com/a/wavesandbox.com/');
  wave.setUIConfig('white', 'black', 'Arial', '13px');
wave.loadWave('googlewave.com!w+MCbDexuyX');
  wave.init(document.getElementById('wave'));

but it stills refers to the wavesandbox ok ok ... I know I can change
the url so instead of

new WavePanel('https://wave.google.com/a/wavesandbox.com/');

be

new WavePanel('https://wave.google.com/wave/');

But it stills doesn't work ... :S

My last resort is to try to modify the
http://wave-api.appspot.com/public/embed.js

but i'm not that expert in the wave api ... maybe, even if I coud understand
it very well, the api would not allows us to make this

embed waves because the preview is not allowed to just look how now we
are unable to communicate waves between sand box

and the google wave preview

... Can some one confirms my hipotesis?

[Google Wave APIs] Serious problem with Wave Preview

2009-10-01 Thread Drak

I dont know how many others are experiencing this, and I didnt see a
clear support channel to raise significant issues (i.e. not random
crashes, but repeated, repeatable crashes) but I figure this is a good
place to start:

I am in the developer preview and everything is fine in the sandbox:
today I clicked my invitation for the public preview. As soon as my
account was created the browser crashed (with the "everything's fine
captain" messages). Everytime I log in I get the crash and am unable
to do anything at all. I guess something went seriously wrong with
the account creation. I have tried on multiple browsers and multiple
computers clearing caches, using proxies and not all with the same
fatal behaviour. I looked for some support channel but I didnt find
it. Can someone direct me how to bring this to the relevant dept at
Google since I guess this could be the tip of a more nasty bug
somewhere.

All the best

look at your url in the browser
if you click on one wave ... you will see how the browser shows something
like:

https://wave.google.com/wave/#restored:wave:googlewave.com!w%252Axr43yAKmL.1

so this is the wave id

wave:googlewave.com!w%252Axr43yAKmL.1

[Google Wave APIs] Re: Wave Identity

>
>    * My email is trej...@gmail.com
>    * My Jabber ID is trej...@gmail.com
>    * My Wave ID is trej...@googlewave.com   <-- WHY?!

Because it is provider-centric. The provider dictates the domain of
the identity. Are you saying that you'd be totally fine with the
"design" of the identity scheme if Google had chosen "gmail.com" as
the domain. How long would that last? Until you wanted to change the
provider of your account.

I do think you are right that OpenID doesn't solve the problem,
entirely. But just separating the provider of my identity and the
provider of my account would be an order of magnitude better. I think
Wave identity should be managed like server domain names. Perhaps
overkill. But I can't believe we would design a modern email and IM
system without respecting that user identity doesn't really change
when users change providers. Imagine how well the internet would have
worked without domain name lookup.

[Google Wave APIs] Google Wave gadget Idea : WhoBringsWhat gadget

2009-10-01 Thread Jean-Thomas

Hi everyone
Due to extensive work hours and family life, i don't really have the
time to developp the gadget of my dreams, but maybe if I explain my
idea someone will grab it and make it work !
I don't think this is really hard to program by the way.

Let's imagine.
Me and 3 of my friends want to organize a lunch in a park.
We all sign in on our google wave account and begin to make a list of
what we want to eat on this coming sunny sunday. We write this list in
this new great app, and everybody clicks on items he's going to bring
(just as with the yesnomaybe gadget).

This is the basic idea. Now we can imagine even more tools and
options.
Me and my friends are not very wealthy, and even if we want to have a
good time, it musn't be too expensive. So, the least to do is to
evenly distribute the costs.
So with each item on the list, we add a price. And when the list is
ready, we click a button called "autobalance", which distributes the
items to buy to every participant.

Ok, let's go a little further. Somebody needs to bring cheese. It
happens that I have cheese in my fridge I can't finish, so I'll bring
it ! That's why before hitting the balance button i'll "lock" the
cheese item in my column. you follow me ?

We can imagine dozens of extensions to that : being counted as a
couple and not as 2 participants, and so on.

So, what do you think ? Would you use such a gadget ? I would,
definitely. That's why I hope that my idea will not be lost in the
mass of ideas and talks about GWave and that someone will grab the
idea and make it a fully functionnal gadget.

Thanks for reading,

JTM

[Google Wave APIs] Do you think webcam & an irc like chat commands would make wave the best?

2009-10-01 Thread gyroscope

You could use a cam on a netbook as your avatar & eventually command
irc like commands.

An education portal makes a bit of sense
Make it local with google maps api, then treat it as as a classified
system system with google profiles. Add wiki elements to shared
documents & data... SO GOOGLE WILL EVENTUALLY BECOME THE BEST
TELECOMMUTING PORTAL!!! :D XD & OWNS THE LARGEST DATABASE OF BOOKS &
VIDEO... why hasn't anyone made an online school system using google's
products... It's the largest market of users. It needs to be
centralized & more efficient for that. just merge the cms of orkut &
knol into an accredited online education/community & POW google's set
for a socialist economy... obama needs to get on that.

lol, you can put solar panels on data... XD

anyone want to help make a portal?

The only issue would be fascist/bourgeoisie mentalities corrupting the
essence of an open & free education/telecommunication. Which
liberalizes the creative folk who run this whole system of constant
revolution. The capitalist/communist debate has lasted thus long but
it's irrelevant for the web.

It's not just a top down system anymore, we're 3D bitches!
Work should be collective education, research for technological
advancements, collective entertainment, digital money/trading/credit
system over a man made currency of raw material.
Pollution is from everyone going everywhere, plus the machines making
our products. We can allow the working class to continually education
themselves, the faster we can update our current living conditions the
faster we'll combat against green house gases.

We have to much oil in the air to sustain our atmosphere. It'll heat
up & flood us all. I don't think any of us want to see think of the
world like an ant colony, but that's what we have become... We're the
ones to blame for bringing god into this.

This system has worked so far, but as a world we need to think of the
next level of living. We don't need to be trapped in a perpetual
imperialist outcome anymore, obama hasn't connected the dots yet & I
guess google can't work fast enough or at least doesn't feel like
reassuring there future plans other than an apple approach, which
still gives in to selling out to an outdated system.

 Education shouldn't be restricted to a location the best tool for it
has yet to be used... Even online education differs based on their
local customs & variable ems systems.
