Re: Poll: GWT 1.4.62 vs 1.5 -- what are you using? what are your plans?
Lot more data points now. Pattern is quite clear: everyone is either migrated already or will migrate soon. Really increases my confidence in 1.5.2 to see so many adopting it so quickly. Until Google commissions a real scientific adoption rate survey similar to the one Adobe did for Flash, this will have to do. Thanks for the data, it allowed me to decide my library didn't need to bother supporting 1.4.62 in future releases--saving me lots of time and effort. John On Sep 27, 12:43 am, "Dean S. 1) yes, for new projects 2) yes, for existing projects 3) yes 4) no 5) yes - unless 1.6 is ready and stable 6) no 7) 3 months Moving off 1.4.62 depends on how fast I can re-implement/replace our legacy use of MyGWT Widgets. I have replicated about 80% of our dependency with custom components that fill the need ( tables, trees, dialogs, effects ), in the next few weeks I will get to eliminate the remaining 20%, and will "own the code" in that transition, and be bound to no external libraries or the whims of License Changes. Though the work is difficult, the payoff has been tremendous - our Table Widget is Orders Of Magnitude faster than MyGWT's, can contain Widgets in Cells, etc, do Sorting, Paging. Column visibility. GWT-Ext and Ext-GWT looked ideal at the outset of the project, but in reality have been the source of much pain - No matter how "pretty" they are. I'm working on a high-performance application in the Financial Sector - Pretty doesn't count when you are talking about 3 Seconds to display a table V.S. our 0.30 seconds. The rest of the 1.5 transition is properly parameterizing RPC objects/ signatures, which is trivial compared to the component work. Binding ourselves to MyGWT early on was the biggest mistake. Re: Poll: GWT 1.4.62 vs 1.5 -- what are you using? what are your plans?
Thomas, walden, kozura Since the official 1.5 was released only a few weeks back, I was assuming most would not be using 1.5 yet. Kinda like IE6, I thought 1.4.62 would linger on for years. Seems I was very wrong. A survey based on three data points isn't very significant, but it's the best I've got to go on. I've downloaded 1.5 and, apart from a very annoying need to add: to the ant java task that invokes the GWT Java to JavaScript compiler (or else I got OutOfMemory java heap errors) so far at least, it seems like it "just works" (except the compiled javascript is about 5 to 20% faster, depending on scenario). Unless I find a major issue that causes me to have to back pedal, or hundreds respond to this survey saying "1.4.62 forever!" you can add me to the list of those using 1.5 and not using 1.4.62 any more. Re: Poll: GWT 1.4.62 vs 1.5 -- what are you using? what are your plans?
Concur with Thomas, the ROI of generics and annotations with 1.5 made switching a no-brainer even at M1, even for a fairly large project. With a good IDE, coding productivity and bug rates are *vastly* improved. 1.5 is quite stable now, but even when it wasn't, most problems were point issues for particular applications that could be temporarily worked around. I'm sure you have your reasons, but the web moves quickly, sticking with older technology for a year much less 4 seems the bigger risk, by falling behind in capabilities and support. Re: Poll: GWT 1.4.62 vs 1.5 -- what are you using? what are your plans?
I just completed a "Big Bang" upgrade from 1.4.62 to 1.5. Since I have exactly one GWT project, I'm done with 1.4 for good. I expect to be using 1.5 exclusively for the next year (if I'm employed that long). My upgrade: 1. technical conversion (replacing libs and shaking out errors I introduced by intrusive customization) took 2 days and the result was usable. 2. Converting to java 1.5 features (generics, foreach loops, auto boxing, etc) and related refactorings took about a week including testing along the way. 3. Converting JPA classes to be GWT compileable took another couple of days (but I'm not sending them on the wire yet; retiring my DTO's is yet to come). Summary: In essence, it's not a bad conversion at all. There is lots of language style improvement you can do, and it can be fairly time consuming. Also: I'm evaluating IntelliJ IDEA 8.0M1, which has some nice GWT support, although it is still crabbing about annotations that the GWT compiler is blithely ignoring. One nice feature is the way navigation works among the synchronous and async RPC interfaces.
