[gwt-contrib] GWT Steering Committee Changes
Hi Folks, As you may know, in our first meeting, we had decided that the GWT Steering Committee Chair position was to be a rotational responsibility shared by the SC members. We haven't implemented that for years now, but I'm happy to announce that starting this year, we are doing this. Colin Alworth has agreed to be the next GWT SC chair, taking over from me (I was nominally running this until now). This is mainly an administrative change, but we also want to follow this up with more active work from the GWT Steering Committee. We will have more follow up email in the coming months. Hi Folks, So far I have ~16 pre-registrations, including Googlers. This is a bit short of what I'd like, but I'll go ahead and plan to hold the event. Pre-registered folks, please wait for a confirmation email from me before you book your travel. I'm going to leave the form accessible since I have a few more spaces to fill. Hi Folks, I'm still looking for more people to pre-register, we have a lot more room, and space for talks. The deadline for pre-registration was May 8, but I'm extending it to 10th (Sunday). If we don't have enough people, I'll probably cancel or postpone to another time. Will let everyone know by Monday for sure. [gwt-contrib] GWT Contributor Meet-up 2014
Hi Contributors, We (Google) plan to host a 2-day event at Google, Mountain View, for GWT contributors, on June 23 and 24, 2014. We hosted a similar event last year at Google, with many interesting talks, see: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9yAtQQgzROQlist=PL1yReUCGwGvrq1bwn8all71WcvkLQm7ty. We expect there will be fewer talks and more opportunity to discuss and write code this year, but details are still to be decided. Participation is by invitation only since we have a limited number of spots (40), but I'd like to open it up for GWT contributors who are interested in attending. Please note: - Pre-registration indicates that you are interested in attending the event. Invitees will be selected based on the following: - Number and extent of contributions to GWT. - Whether invited by a Steering Committee member or GWT Maintainer. - Talk or workshop proposed, if any. More details are in the form below. Please complete by May 19 if you want to participate. https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1SS29F79WOerKS_Hn7Q_ad883g4-jIwUHic9FAEgWANs/viewform Please don't share the link widely. This is mainly an event for people contributing to GWT (as opposed to users of GWT). [gwt-contrib] Changes in monthly GWT contributor hangout
Hi Folks, We've been having this meeting for several months now, with varying amounts of community participation. Rather than force a meeting every month whether we have topics or not, we are planning to change the logistics: 1. Send out a reminder one week prior, asking for agenda topics. 2. If you are working on a patch of feature that you would like to discuss with other GWT contributors or maintainers at a meeting, please reply to the thread with topic and details of what you'd like to discuss. 3. Needless to say, people suggesting topics are expected to show up at the meeting :-) Our next contributor hangout is next Wednesday April 23. So please reply with topics you want to discuss by Monday, April 21, so I can arrange logistics. The hope is that we will have more effective and focused meetings. [gwt-contrib] GWT Patch Review Policy Maintainer list
Hi Folks, One of the problems with patch reviews is that we don't have a guideline on who reviews patches and how does a patch get final approval. We put together a proposal for patch reviews, and a list of maintainers for GWT. At the SC meeting this morning, we decided this makes sense and will be moving forward with it. The two relevant documents are here: Patch Review Policy: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1_dBGeyqwMaLVXZ48VkOWz64bdLBdUeQgsvY8PEcXyMU/edit# Maintainer List: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1vyncxfuujIJ3L-PBLNM68tfeXRFZ4qDdnWEodblmvRg/edit#heading=h.3v5wd93k00oh We hope this will help streamline GWT contributions and make the process more efficient. Over time, we hope this will encourage contributors to take ownership and make substantial contributions. If you have GWT experience and would like to be a maintainer, please send email to one of Steering Committee members. Re: [gwt-contrib] Re: Next GWT Contributor Hangout
Yes, sorry folks, as Matthew said earlier, we had technical problems with getting the video recording to work. Here's notes from the meeting (thanks to Brian). We'll do better next time. - GWT Contributor hangout today (recording didn't work, so we just have notes) - James Northrup: wants to work on Mavenization; has a Maven project that using GWT 2.5rc1. Using shell scripts to do the conversion. - Want to be able to compile with just a method even if the rest of the class is invalid. Ray: hard to do this using the JDT since it doesn't give us anything back. We would need to investigate JDT's error recovery. - Talked about Maven versus Gradle. - Julian Dramaix is working on GSS; work in progress, next step is conditional CSS. Ray: are you using the new syntax allowing you to call functions? Yes. Ray: would be nice to have a conversion script for CSS - GSS. Goktug: we shouldn't support two; too confusing. Brian: but we need a transition. - Colin: want to get snapshots going. Matthew is on it. - Daniel and Ray talked about arrays. Ray: for typed arrays, we don't need a type map because we can determine the type just by looking at it. For regular arrays we can't. We should replace GWT.create() stuff with browser checks in ArrayNormalizer. -- http://groups.google.com/group/Google-Web-Toolkit-Contributors --- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups GWT Contributors group. [gwt-contrib] Re: GWT-Contributors Hangout on Air Event
I haven't got any requests to participate yet. Just to make this clear: if you want to participate in the QA, you need to send me your name gmail address so I can add you to the invite. Otherwise, you can just watch the event from the G+ page. Re: [gwt-contrib] Re: code review policy
It would be good to formalize the process, and appoint 'maintainers' for different parts of GWT, who should be people who are knowledgeable, have key contributions, and are willing to take on that role. The advantages of doing this are: 1. Avoid bike-shedding. 2. Build up specialized knowledge, and 3. Get recognition for key contributors. Not having maintainers will cause trouble in the long term. Contributors should not fell compelled to respond to every comment if the people most experienced in that part of GWT have already given a +2. I think we should have a meeting and come up with a short list of people that we can nominate and see if they are willing to take on that role. Bhaskar On Monday, June 10, 2013 2:16:22 PM UTC-7, Ray Cromwell wrote: I've been giving +2s for stuff I think is ready to commit, but I always assumed that Googlers would have no superpowers here, and that Steering Committee members and other designated people with specialized knowledge could do so as well. Google doesn't automatically import changes without reviewing them, and so our internal heuristic is something like if importing changes from gerrit, if there isn't a +2 from a Google employee, we need to take a deeper look. For example, John giving +2 to I18N or OOPHM changes seems ideal to me. I actually wouldn't feel comfortable giving more than a +1 on I18N unless John was unavailable and it needed to get landed because of a critical issue. Is it any committer? Technically, yes: https://gwt-review.googlesource.com/#/admin/projects/gwt,access (if you can see it; restricted access) I don't know who exactly is a committer though. Of non-Googlers, at least John (jat) and me. I assume so, but perhaps out of tradition, I've been assuming Googlers would give +2s. Well, and even if we are/have moved past the Google-only phase of GWT, for now/awhile they will still have the most knowledge about the codebase (perhaps sans Thomas). I try to not use +2 too much (or at least not submit reviews) because the CI server currently doesn't run tests against real browsers, and doesn't run tests at all pre submit. Maybe we should do something like OpenStack: http://ci.openstack.org/gerrit.html They have a third category Approved in addition to Verified and CodeReview, when set to approved then the CI server is triggered to do a build, and updates the Verified score. This is so that they can control the charge put on their CI server (only code that looks OK is built; but it's not worth scrutinizing the code if it'd break, so they don't wait the CodeReview+2). I think we could have our first checkstyle check done automatically for all reviews (like today, when it works ;-) ) but only put Verified-1 if it fails, and trigger a full build with tests only with an Approved+1 (or CodeReview+2 if that's easier to setup). Ideally, the build could just run JVM tests, and we (committers) could trigger browser tests (HtmlUnit only, or in real browsers) if needed. But that's not easy to setup (and someone would have to do it), so for now I submit sparingly (unless Googlers tell us to go ahead): for now, tests are run by Google when master is merged on google/pu, and they do reverts when something breaks. -- http://groups.google.com/group/Google-Web-Toolkit-Contributors --- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups GWT Contributors group. [gwt-contrib] Resolving issues
Hi Folks, Open issues in gwt-steering don't seem to get resolved unless either there's a SC meeting, or someone send a poll email asking people for their opinions, which sometimes take too long. I'd like to propose that we make this a more formal process, so we'll get quicker decisions. Here's my thoughts on a process: 1. Initiator sends email to gwt-contrib gwt-steering to get initial thoughts, asking for responses within a fixed timeframe. For example: I propose we drop support for IE8 in GWT 3.0, coming around spring 2014. The motivation is to get some conversation going, as well as flushing out some of the questions, for example: does that mean we will continue to update 2.6 for those who need IE8 support', or 'when does IE8 support start disappearing from trunk?'. 2. After the specified time period, if there's enough initial support, the initiator writes up a formal proposal (in Google docs) in a template similar to: 1. Proposal 2. Motivation 3. Schedule 4. Owner(2) 5. Decision date and checkbox for each SC member to signify position on it (yes, no, nuetral) 3. The proposal is discussed in the Google doc (open to comments from everyone, but editable only by the owner). 4. By the decision date, each SC member indicates whether they support the proposal. If a SC meeting is needed, a meeting is held. Note: I'm not saying we do this for every CL or change in GWT - that should be the decision of the committers and reviewers. This is for mainly higher level (perhaps non-technical) decisions. Thoughts?
