Re: OIL.... Henry's curiosity

2000-07-18 Thread John Laurenson

RE:
<< With conventional oil it would virtually start to stall
out as the engine parts would expand and get close to seizing. >>
Exactly what is close to seizing? I suspect this has crossed over into
conjecture or guessing from scientific investigation. From my mechanical
experience, it has either seized or it hasn't, or galled, in the case of
ferrous metal to ferrous metal. However, as a motorcycle retains more heat,
it can begin to run rich, esp non injected motorcycles, from gasoline
expansion in the tank and or float bowls, (again, non injected). This causes
a rich running condition that can actually cause rough running to stalling.
The symptoms would be similar to running with the choke on. I do know Motul
claims to lower engine temperature with use of at least one of their
products. No offense intended, just offering a mechanical perspective to an
engineering judgment.
RSRBOB

No offense taken to another perspective.

The large 1200cc aircooled FJ is notorious for over heating in
traffic. Large air 4 cyclinder cooled engines do not do a very good
job of removing heat from the center two cylinders without having air
moving across the engine. The FJ is manufactured with pretty loose
tolerances, compared to a water cooled engine, to avoid metal to
metal between the aluminum piston and steel cylinders sleeves, which
have different coefficients of expansion, to help avoid to tight a
fit when engine gets hot.

One of the fixes, often used by FJ owners, is to raise the main
needle and turn out the idle jets to enrich the fuel flow to engine
at low speeds and idle. More fuel improves cooling.

The gas tank is vented so excessive pressure build up will not occur.
If the carbs get too hot they would probably cause the vapor lock and
the engine would want to start to diesel. This is not what happens.
The same effect can happen with the tank removed and tuning the
bike.with a vacuum meter. I having a fan running on the engine while
tuning to avoids this from happening. it takes about 20 minutes at
idle for too a high temperature to start to become a problem.

As the engine finally reaches a very hot condition it starts to slow
down at idle, like you are letting the clutch out and causing drag.
This binding effect is also very noticeable when trying to restart.
The starter has a hard time turning the engine over and it rotates at
a much lower speed. Again like it is binding.

Like others have commented, engines run cooler with synthetic oils.
There are three possible reasons for this. 1) the oil does a better
job of removing heat.which it may. 2) the oil lubricates better
and reduces friction and heat. 3) the oil on the cylinder walls
maintains it lubricating quality better under extreme temperature.

Since, as I have stated, I found the engine actually runs slightly
faster at idle with synthetic oilmy conclusion is less friction
and or no breakdown as being the major effects.

Again my logic was very simpleless friction, less heat and less
differential metal expansion to cause reduced tolerances. Actually,
if the heat was causing the fuel flow to increase, it would have a
more beneficial cooling effect than stalling effect on the FJ.

My best guess...:>)

Well, I am sad to report that my GTS was hit and knocked over in the
parking lot at my work. Somebody backed into it, then picked it up again
and took off. However, most of the incident was caught on tape, but there
are two possible suspects, and both are denying it.

I will need a front cowling (surrounds the headlight), front fender,
handlebar, barend, right side turn signal, right side mirror, and exhaust
silencer (muffler). The front swingarm was also scraped up, but I am
thinking that the plastic protector that Kevin Hawkins put on his might be a
good thing to cover it up. I also have a $1000 deductable (ouch) but I need
to discuss this with my agent.

My fear is that some of these parts will not be available for my red

I have had good luck with www.Cycleparts.com. The good points are generally less

John, Competition Accessories has GTS parts. On another note I found out
this weekend at the BMW national in Midland Michigan that the Russel
seat man passed away about a week ago. Many people say that the Russel
Day Long is the best seat ever made for long distance cycling. I have
sat on a few and had to awakened after a few minutes. Now that what I
call comfort. There were six thousand bikes at the BMW moa , and three
1993 GTS models., and one 1994 . My 1994 has color matched Krausers, and
it drew a crowd . Many questions, and the comment that now that sounds
like a motorcycle at idle. The new BMW bikes sound remarkably like giant
two wheeled sewing machines at idle. Does anyone know if the K1200 is
faster than a GTS ?? I know they claim a top end of 152 on the K bike,
but the quarter mile times were the same as a GTS , in the 11.70'S .
K-1200'S have a six speed , so top end is not a fair comparison. I have
pushed my GTS to about 140 down Big Bend Texas way with the bags back at
the campground. I think it would have gone a bit faster, but I did not
want to push my luck on a then new bike. Anyone have any top end
figures?? Several K bike types had inquiring minds and wanted to know.
For a 94 model bike to still have that much interest tells me we are
riding way hip slick and cool machines!!

Sincerely,

Alan Tooraen

I just use a regular auto jack (hydralic) under the front swingarm,
cushioned with a piece of wood. As long as it is on the center stand, it
works fine and is very stable. You are only lifting about 50-75 lbs like
that, and with the load spread across with the wood, there is no danger to
the swingarm.

I've got the mounting brackets for the Yamaha (Krauser) hard bags, so it's
really easy. I put a strap (OK, a 24" nylon/spectra climbing sling) on each
bracket, and attached a tie-down to each sling, running down to eye-bolts at
ground-level. With the bike on the center stand, I sit on the passenger seat,
lean back (forcing the front wheel into the air and the rear wheel down) and
tighten the tie-down straps. There are now 2 points holding the rear of the
bike down. It takes longer to type up the description than to do the work.

Oh, be sure to _slightly_ loosen the wheel mounting bolts first...it's easier
when you've got the weight of the bike helping to keep the front wheel from
turning.

Whaz up buckaroo? Sorry for the late reply! Started a new job and went on
vacation to the beach last week. I've got a windshield (brand new OEM) on
the shelf in my garage equipped with the BMW deflector. Depending on your
height and whether you have a Corbin seat, this setup can put your helmet in
clear air. Look at http://www.geocities.com/~raddboy/gtsmods.html to see a
few pics of the setup. Roger Van Santen used this setup for the Iron Butt
Rally this past year I believe. He could probably offer input on it's
effectiveness.

I'm looking for input on the quietest windshield set up. I can't
seem to get the windshield king, Kevin, to respond off list.

Has anyone used the little BMW deflector on a stock screen? Does it
work? Does it add a lot of wind buffeting noise? Where do you get
one if it does work?

If the bike is in neutral, it will start whether the sidestand is up or
down.
My problem occurs when trying to start the bike in gear with the
sidestand up and the clutch pulled in. And its only been
intermittant under those conditions.

In neutral, it starts every time regardless of the clutch or sidestand
position, thats why I'm leaning towards the cluth switch.

I've never stayed there (Mountain Brook), but I met the daughter (Maqelle)

welcome motorcyclists.

You've probably seen the web site, www.mountainbrook.com .

Be sure to ride the Cherohala Scenic Highway (NC143,TN165) west out of
Robbinsville. You can take 360 N when you get to Tellico Plains, then 411

Re: Starting problem

2000-07-18 Thread nicholas.threader

If you want to check the switch , the connection is behind the front
sprocket casing ,
i can't remember which way the connection works , but first try it with the
two wires
disconnected ( Remember to replace the casing or the clutch push rod will
shoot out
and loads of oil to ) does it start?
Then connect the two wires together does it start?
If theres only one wire disconnect it does it start?
if no then short it to earth ( engine casing ).
I'am sorry the way to check it , is a bit vague but mine went wrong along
time ago.

Point well taken.
Maybe a blast of WD-40 inside of the switch might help or if worse
comes to worse, I can have it replaced under warranty.

why would you need to? My GPS records max speed attained. So you can view

Price of the GTS in Europe

2000-07-18 Thread Lanouette, Richard

I was looking at Yamaha's brochure for 1999, the GTS is cheaper than the R-1
!
If those are Swiss franc that would be about 12,000 US $ !

What do you do to fix the problem then? Clean the switch
somehow or simply treplace it?
