Someone on the VFR list has suggested that he has bought one for around $5k If you keep looking around and are willing to travel, you should be able to find one for under $6500. The guy who got his for $5k was lucky, but if you wait long enough you might find a cheap one. Did anyone on this list lose their front tire often? If you're asking if it will slide, I'd say yes with the original tires, but no with any decent set of sport touring tires. I use Perelli Dragon GTS. No slipping on the front down to -grind the pegs off- lean levels. What's the scoop with the GTS reliability? Mine still works. If you've been reading lately you've seen the guys with electrical problems although this seems to be pretty unusual. I expect the motor to last for 200,000 miles. Are most of the parts still available from Yamaha? Yes. It was on sale as a new model in Europe until last year. A lot of people has suggested for me to stop fooling around and buy an ST- 1100 instead, That's what happens when you hang out with Honda guys. Do Yamaha hardbags leak in heavy rain? Not yet. Did anyone have any problems with Givi racks or with GTS frame after installing a Givi rack? This is no wussy subframe like the Hayabusa. The load rating for rider, passenger, and cargo is 485 lbs (220 kg). I have no info on the Givi rack itself. Also, those of you around 5'9", how do you like the riding position on GTS? I'm 5'10" and think it's fairly comfortable depending on how fast I'm going and which screen is being used. With the low screen on - no problems. With the high screen on especially at lower speeds, 40 mph, I start to feel the weight on my hands after 2-3 hours. Did anyone on this list have accumulated around 100,000 miles or more on GTS? I think the high mileage guy is coming up on 200,000. Fred Grefe

GTS brake tests from various magazines
In a message dated 8/7/00 11:05:54 AM Eastern Daylight Time, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: one of the road tests pointed out that the high-speed "oh-shits" (100 to 0 as I recall) the GTS stopped quicker than anything they could find, two wheel or four, ever published in any roadtesting magazine. Wish I could remember which test made that claim, but that big ventilated, center-mounted disc up front will really scrub off the speed. And another test did three immediately-successive 140-0 stops and couldn't get ANY measurable fade. I looked through my Ian Smith articles and found this stuff on brakes. The 0-140-0 tests were done be MCNews in March '93. Rider magazine did 60-0 tests where the GTS was consistently stopping in less than 90 feet. They said they had never seen any results like this from any car or motorcycle. Lastly, here's a link to the Internet BMW site where they have a MCNews ABS test. The GTS is not included, but it's interesting to see where and for who ABS was an advantage. http://www.ibmwr.org/prodreview/abstests.html Fred

It's been rock solid ever since. After getting the wheel done a Costco, the marks from the old weights were still on the rim. It was amazing to se how far off the motorcycle shop had been. Re: ABS info repost
Oh yee heathens of little faith! GREAT NEWS! - WE WIN! I just had a call from Jordan Cavanaugh at Yamaha. They have obviously been thinking long and hard about this one and they have decided to replace any defective HU free of charge and will reinmburse anyone who has replaced one at their own expense if they provide receipts!!! No warranty required, no proof of maintenance. What you need to do is take the bike into a Yamaha dealer and have them confirm the HU is at fault. Get them to call Jordan Cavanaugh at (714) 761 7435 M-F 8:30 - 5 or 1 800 962 7926 to confirm they are to replce the HU free of charge. Jordan said anyone should feel free to call him and I'd think it might be a good idea if he got a few thankyou calls. Consequently DO NOT SENT ANY BAD PUBLICITY LETTERS TO ANYONE. Yamaha DO care greatly about their customers afterall. I realize that this is not necessarily a permanent long term fix, but I think it is a grand gesture on Yamaha's part and we probably need to futher discuss maintenance issues with them to ensure longevity of the new HU. I'll be out of the office from end of today and back on Tuesday so I'll be out of touch by email for a while. Merry Christmas everyone. Yamaha is the best! Cheers Joe.

Re: 1st time GTS questions
In a message dated 2/14/00 10:05:17 AM Eastern Standard Time, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: So, I have a MAJOR issue/question with this 1993 GTS (18K miles) that I may purchase. How serious is this ABS pump failure?? Only serious if you wreck. Is it common? and if Yamaha repairs/replaces it under warranty/safety recall, how do I know that it won't fail again 30k miles down the road? Yearly brake fluid changes should probably prevent it. I test mine almost every time I go out. Should it eventually fail and Yamaha won't fix it, then I'll take it apart and clean it myself. When I finally get to ride the bike (as soon as the rain stops here in LA), I'll lock-up the rear brake and see what kind of "pulsing" I get in my foot. Look at the info below on how to test the ABS indoors. Other than that, I suppose I'm just "winging-it"... Being a BMW aficionado, I've ridden plenty of ABS bikes, but never owned one. I like ABS. I haven't used it on the street other than testing it, but should I overbrake someday it's a nice safety net to have. -Fred Grefe Manassas, Va The following is a saved from a Kevin Hawkins post: The best way to test the ABS HU is to run the HU diagnostics. 1. Remove the seat and find the diagnostic plug hidden above where the tool pouch is secured in the tail of the bike. There are two diagnostic plugs, get the one just above the tool pouch. 2. There is a locking tab securing the protective insert. Lift the locking tab up with your finger and gently pull the dummy plug out with a pair of pliers. 3. You want to short out the two conductors adjacent(closest) to the locking tab. 4. Pull in the front brake lever firmly and push down on the rear brake. 5. While holding both brakes, turn the ignition key to the ON position. 6. You will first feel the front brake lever push(kind of a ratchet sound) out against your grip, then fall back to where it was. Next the rear brake pedal will ratchet up against your foot then fall back to where it was. The important part is the initial ratcheting push out against your foot or hand pressure. Even if you hold the levers firmly, the HU pump should be able to push out against you! Don't grip the lever with all your might or stand with your full body weight on the rear lever, but DO apply firm braking pressure.

If this is all too much effort, wait until 2001 when Schuberth plans to get then DOT approved and will sell them here. www.louis.de/ Fred Grefe p.s. if you're a football fan, ESPN just reported that Jets coach Bill Parcells just quit.

Euro vs. USA headlight
If I recall correctly the European headlight has 2 bulbs. Is one the high beam and one the low beam or do they both do the same thing. Are they better than the US headlight (can't be worse)? I looked for close up pictures of the Euro headlight on a few webpages, but couldn't find any good ones. Where can I find some good, close-up pictures? Fred Grefe

Re: ABS
In a message dated 11/30/99 8:30:50 PM Eastern Standard Time, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: Has any list member had the courage to test the front ABS system? These were the thoughts that went through my head as a prepared to test the front ABS. "Here I am standing in the driveway holding a hair pin. What if one of the guys comes up and sees me holding this thing. It would be almost as bad as when SHE has me hold her purse in the store Stupid seat. Come on dammit. OK now where do I stick this thing. Man I hope this is it. Is it the amps or the volts that are gonna knock the crap out of me if I've got the wrong plug. I'll use my electrically shielded shirt to hold it. Do I turn it on first or... No, that didn't work. that's pretty cool. Wonder how many times I can do this before the battery dies." Yeah I know it takes some real guts to test the front ABS, but do what I did and just go for it. Living life on the edge. You can't stop me. Don't even try. Look I'm running with scissors! In case that's NOT what you were asking about: I usually road test the ABS whenever I go out. I try the rear brake first. If it works, and it has so far, then I'll hit the front at about 40mph. I prefer a moderate speed and dry pavement. My theory here is that the spinning rear wheel will help keep me vertical and if the front locks up then when I release the brake the tire will regain grip immediately on the dry road. Fred Grefe

Aftermarket bodywork
In a message dated 10/25/99 1:17:45 PM Eastern Daylight Time, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: I also can't find the aftermarket bodywork for a GTS, I don't know if this is the one you were looking for, but they make two pieces of bodywork for the GTS. One covers everything in the front upper area (fairing, tank, etc.) the other is a one piece lower cowling. The front piece doesn't have a precut light hole, so you have to cut your own (a good reason to add a better headlight). They don't make a rear section. http://www.airtech-streamlining.com/yamaz/gts.htm Fred Grefe
