No idea who made the proposal but I saw there is already a GUADEC
project at https://gitlab.gnome.org/Community/Engagement/GUADEC so
people would just need to be added to it.

Agreed, this is important. I don’t know if OSEM already does it. I’ll
check and ask for this feature if it’s not already present.

Oh. I’ll get in touch with the OSEM people to check why they claim we did.

The good thing about standards is that it doesn’t matter what software
sets them. What matters is that they are used.

As far as I know, the schedule format was defined by Pentabarf and
nowadays many other applications implement it

>> There is 5-6 dedicated people for OSEM.

Yes. GNOME.Asia as Sri said earlier, but also a few others (FOSSETCON,
PGConfUS, SeaGL,Open Government Partnership Summit…). I’m not sure
this criterion is that important too. If the software does what we
need it to, and if the developers are active and implementing the
features that are lacking, I’d say that is more important.

>> So, I'm hoping to make an executive decision and move to OSEM.
> What's your reasoning so far?

First of all, the main motivation is to move away from regcfp. While
it has served us well so far, it has a single developer who said
himself that it should be rewritten. It would be better to move to
something that is better supported and is actively developed.

There are a few alternatives on the market and we could bikeshed for a
while without reaching an agreement. I investigated OSEM and it does
what we need, looks good and easy to use. It fits our requirements and
the developers are listening to user feedback. I heartily recommend
switching to it.

For the “audio but no video” case, someone could get the slides and
sync them to the audio to produce a video.

I can do it if nobody else volunteers, but I won’t have the time to
listen carefully to the audio to find the slide change points so one
would have to do that work first.

Your current attribution work well, they just lack a link to the

While it is not mandatory for the CC0 one, you can still name your

Files by default are not shared at all (just like on Google Drive or
Dropbox) and you can share them with a specific group/user (which
requires membership) or publicly (again, just like Google Drive).

Once your file is sent to owncloud, browse to it through the web
interface and click on the sharing icon next to it (three dots linked
by two lines). There just check the box for public link and you’ll
have a URL to share.

That’s a bit of a catch 22: in order to not use Google Drive, one has
to get the files from Google Drive.

That is not relevant. You could have had that same feedback with any

I don’t get design number 2. ☹

Large inked areas are usually a bad idea, even more so on the chest
when worn by a woman but that concern is still valid on the rest of
the shirt (in the back of designs 1 and 3 here).

The New York State Department of Economic Development has trademarked
the I love New York logo (known as “I ♥ NY”) and for that reason it is
best to avoid designs in that vein as they could claim infringement.

Sorry about all the negative feedback. I like the front design, my
preference goes towards the white bee rather than the color one.

As the guy who had to kick people out of rooms because they were

What about the GNOME Design channel[0]?

Also, I thought Youtube had a concept of channels where a single place
could be referencing and advertising all of their channels?

My concern when uploading to Youtube is that we're contributing to a
centralized Internet, and as a Free Software project we should care
about the decentralized Internet cause. Of course I'm aware that we'll
still have the videos on the GNOME server, but that's not enough as
people will lazily rely on Youtube in the end, or may even stumble
upon things on Youtube and never even be aware that we actually offer
the videos elsewhere (with slides and everything).

That's because you're in a US-centric mindset. There's a difference
between the law in the US and in Europe: US is opt-out by default,
Europe is opt-in by default.

European people see unsolicited contact as a very bad thing, and the
usual "Here's a piece of information about our thing, if you don't
want to hear from us again just unsubscribe using the link at the
bottom" is actually not ok.

So while I'm all for short registration form, I prefer having one more
checkbox in it and making a decision at this time rather than getting
more noise in my inbox and having to jump through hoops to get rid of
it. "No thanks" rather than "Please go away now".

Wow, I don't think I have anything that looks like a written list of
what we bought. We went to a huge store where usually restaurants go
to buy their stuff (think 5kg food cans instead of 500g ones), went
through the alleys and tried to find food and beverages for "a group
of people". I had no idea how many would show up and what we bought in
advance turned out to be not enough.

I'm not sure I can be of more help. :-/

Can you try and handle this better than last year please? There were two issues.

First, at least one person was contacted that wasn't interested in the
women's dinner. I'd need to check, but I'm not even sure she actually
filled in the field as "female" (she may have left it blank), so there
could have been some guesswork on your side. Anyway there should be a
way to opt out of the invitation, or better yet the invitation should
be opt in and separate from the field.

The second issue was that, if I recall correctly, you sent an email
with all the invited people in the To or CC field. The consequence is
that if you're not interested in the dinner, people keep you in the
list of recipients and you keep getting email about something you have
no interest in.

All of this is from memory and I have no quick way to check my facts.
I'm sorry if I got parts wrong, but I think this are details you
should pay attention to.

Cheers.

It usually doesn't depend on that at all. Most of the time, it depends
on availability of the venue, as is the case for 2015.

Potential speakers are people we'd like to see come, but we don't
build the conference around them.

Re: [guadec-list] anti-harassment policy

2014-07-14 Thread Alexandre Franke
First of all, I'm pretty sure nobody in this discussion said there
should be no policy *at all*. There seems to be a misunderstanding
that this discussion is between those "for a policy" vs "those against
any form of policy" and it is not. Maybe those advocating a strong
policy could use a moment to think about it, maybe they'd see we're
not their enemies. As someone said elsewhere, "my heart sank a bit for
every email in the discussion" where people assumed we're not better
than that.

We said we'd comply with the decision, so the code of conduct will be
published. I don't think insisting on the fact that we're bad people
serves any purpose.

Here you're implying that having a soft code, however clear it is,
doesn't work when it comes to enforcement. I think that's the main
point we disagree on. I don't see how to fix this disagreement.

It took years before the people advocating strong policies got to the
point where they are now. I'd expect it will take time before the
people that feel oppressed get to a similar point, if they ever decide
to organize themselves in a similar fashion. But that will most
probably never happen as the latter group wouldn't want to harass
people (from the former group, or not) by insisting with their point
of view.

Have you been to FOSDEM?

Have there been complaints about the FOSDEM policy not being enough or
people boycotting the FOSDEM because of the lack of a stronger policy?

You're using an argument that's been rightfully dismissed when used
the other way around. "If harassment was such a big problem, I would
have heard about it".

When people get uncomfortable (be it because they've been harassed or
because they feel oppressed by a policy), it is not reasonnable to
expect them to talk openly about it.

As you guessed, in such a case there is not much we can do. We could
hire a bouncer but I hope everyone finds this as ridiculous as I do.
If someone is really creating problems, we can (and should) call the
police.

So far I've only had time to reply to the technical questions that
arised (phone numbers…) and not to the practical side of implementing
a policy. Let me fix this.

To begin with, I reverted the change by Pascal, as we didn't reach a
consensus and publishing the policy Marina suggested is not ok. (Also
I think some information I had on the page were missing, such as the
number for SOS médecin)

I've discussed this in private one-to-one conversations with several
organization team members and everyone is uncomfortable with having
such a policy. There are potential harassment victim in this group
(female, black, fat…). The general feeling is that having a policy
such as the long one Marina wrote:
* intimidates everyone and establishes a climate of fear
* is not more efficient than a shorter one such as the current
https://www.guadec.org/policy/ version
* encourages "tl;dr" (too long; didn't read) behaviour

To be frank, I feel that pushing a lengthy policy is a form of
harassment in itself and I'm getting tired of it.

I see that board-list is CCed in this entire thread and I'm not sure I
get the reason. If the board is the body that makes this decision,
then we'll of course comply with the decision. Just know that the
organization team disapproves the proposed policy.

Absolutely not. People that have been kind enough to volunteer for a

people are not even GNOME community members and just offered to give a

If you want to put people names on a page for this purpose, please ask

112 is the "generic" emergency number (gives access to a hotline that

I'm not sure what kind of contact I should give for non-emergency

Taxi company: "taxi 13" +33 388 36 13 13

We still don't know if we'll remain in the same building for BOFs or
if we'll move to another one. The building where the core days happen
has 3 classrooms, the other one is still to be defined. The university
would prefer that we stay in the same building, but 3 classrooms + 2

irc.gnome.org and you're welcome to join us. As it's the first one,
I'm announcing it on foundation-list as well. If you're interested in
GUADEC organization and want to see the next announcements, please
subscribe to guadec-list.

The agenda is available at https://wiki.gnome.org/GUADEC/2014/Meetings/20131128

Have a nice day.

I think that's a really good idea. Xan was mentionned on IRC as well.

Florian, Rui tried to make you aware of the fact that next week has a
holiday on Wednesday too, but it seems you missed that. Skipping *two*
weeks in a row might be a bit too much, hence Rui proposing a single
meeting on another day.

Rui, Friday would be fine for me too.

Same for http://identi.ca/guadec

Also, as I already mentionned during the last two meetings,
https://live.gnome.org/GUADEC/ still looks like GUADEC 2012 is the
upcoming one. Do we have meeting minutes? These should also be put
there.

That was exactly my thought as I read Jiri's proposal.

I feel silly for asking this but I honestly have no clue: when you say
a chair for breastfeeding/pumping, do you mean a special chair that
has been designed for that purpose, or do you just mean that there was
a regular chair (in an area) dedicated to these tasks?
