We have it for PC. My 16yo and 13yo boys absolutely love it. They play it
together with hardly any arguments, so it must be good!

Sorry to be OT! Ummm... The lego costumes are quite accurate for animated
lego figures. My boys are pedantic, and they think it's good. I don't get
much chance to play computer games, as I'm too busy doing other stuff.

It's so nice to know I'm not the only Lego fan!

I don't have any any more, but it was always my favourite toy (not counting
my teddy bear of course, who I do still have).

So when I was little and our holiday to Spain had to be cancelled, and we
went to Denmark instead, you can imagine how excited I was - we actually got to
go to Legoland **and** see the little mermaid statue!

What a great group this is... So glad to have found you guys. (Quick intro:
I'm Kat who has been looking at 15th/16th c. costume for a couple years now
and needs to get down to business and actually sew something)

I found the lego conversation interesting, because the issue of 'WIRED'
Magazine (geeky future tech stuff) which just arrived in the mail last week
has Legos on its cover and the headline: "The lego army wants you: How
obsessed fans are helping Lego reinvent the world's coolest toy."

Sounds like it's not over yet!

~Kat

P.S. Bjarne, I love your embroidery. You might be surprised at how high a
price you can sell bags for. A few years ago I made little gypsy bags out of
embroidered silks and they sold for almost a hundred dollars each time, on
eBay (opening bid was set at something like $7.99). I think people still
greatly appreciate handwork and are willing to pay. My bags weren't very
large, about the size of a small evening purse, no bigger than about 5 x 7
inches. And I didn't even do the embroidery.

Probably depends on your definition of "nice" too... around here Red

I don't know who likes the Lego more, my kids or me. I like having
the excuse to buy Lego. I want the new Viking ship. I love the
Orient Expedition Taj Mahal. My boys could spend days designing with
Lego. The company did go too far into the movie and sports tie-ins,
thta's what cost them so dearly. The Star Wars game is available for
PC (what we have, my boys love the game). The company is now going
into robotics which seems very interesting.

Costume content: last Halloween (2004) we had a group costume as the
Lego Orient Expedition guys, Nick was Johnny Thunder, David was the
Maharajah, I was Miss Pippin Reed, and Ben, my husband, was Dr.
Kilroy. Was much easier than the previous year's Bionicle
costumes.

However, for someone who regularly spends more money on things like

If you mean this one:
http://www.my-drewscostumes.dk/purseembroideries26.htm

from the Prices I see here in the DFW (Dallas Texas and surrounding
metroplex) area I would say that if your target is the collector, that price
is waay too cheap. If the target is the high end purse matron, (i.e.
"You carry Chloé, bring Balenciaga, and pack a perfect Prada. You march
about town with Marc, lunch with Louis, accessorize dates with Dior, and hit
the town with Hermès."), the price is a little low. If the target is an
every day person that is the perfect price.

If the price is for a student or a very hard working wife/mother that is
more than they will ever spend for a purse that does not double for a
utility bag. If they did, then they decided that a bill or two did not need
to be paid just yet and are going to splurge to get it. :)

There are "designer" leather purses that sell for $700 and up. And one
of the things their manufacturers are selling is "uniqueness." They're

As for US taxes--Don't forget capital gains. Income tax includes more
than salary income. If you buy something like corporate stock or real

fees (some fixed, others variable in amount). These vary widely depending
on the type of item and location. The itemized taxes and government fees on
my phone bill alone total about 33% added to the service. Then there is
personal property taxes and taxes on estimated land value (each for city,
county, state and school school). Then there are income taxes which are
confusing by themselves... and Social Security taxes. On top of this are
hidden (from the consumer) taxes on production that are passed on by the
manufacturer or provider of service to the consumer. I don't think anyone
in the USA can tell you how much taxes they actually pay! And I live in
what is considered a poor, rural State called Arkansas...

Bjarne, I agree with Fran. This is beautifully conceived and beautifully
executed work on a piece of usable art. While as a "shopper" I might wish for a
lower price, as a serious purchaser I would expect to pay well over $100 for
such an item. You don't want to underprice your artistry OR your labor.

Of course there's nothing to prevent you from once in awhile adjusting a price
for a special customer or for a particular market. But if you're going to make
these to sell, price them according to their value in your eyes. As Fran says,
purchasers in the group you've identified as your target will really determine
their market value.

I myself will start putting money aside to one day buy one of these!

I consider any thing hand made to be good value. $100 does not sound
expensive for the detail and work you put into the items you make. If it
took only 10 minutes to make, then I might think the price high. But as a
handcrafter, this took more than a few hours to make. With your expertise

Do you consider my bag for 100 dollars cheap or expensive?

I guess it's all relative. I would not spend $100 on a bag because it's not
something I can afford right now.

However, for someone who regularly spends more money on things like this
(custom-made clothing or designer-name pieces) it would be considered cheap.

In the grand scheme of things, $100 is not a huge amount of money (dinner
for 4 with drinks at a nice place would cost this much) but for the skill
and beauty of the items you make, it's pennies! I think many people would
not blink if it were twice that price.

I don't have anything to "pop out" for a bumroll shape. I would

I have found that when you bill things as one of a
kind, handcrafted, or any other term that sets it
apart, you can get much higher prices for it.

Personally, having seen the pictures you posted, I
would charge $300-$400 for the bag. The workmanship
looks excellent, the materials are expensive and it
would be hard to match. Plus, you should be rewarded
for your time and skill.

While we may have a glut of cheap, factory made items
- handcrafted items are much prized. I can't tell you
how many of my clients are amazed at the simple skill
to hem a skirt, let alone make a dress from scratch.
They pay me for my time and skill.

Re: [h-cost] prices

2006-01-27 Thread Lavolta Press
Basically, the bag is worth whatever people are willing to pay you for
it. Also, you can sometimes make more money selling to fewer people at
a higher price, than you can to more people at a lower price. I'd
certainly recommend that strategy for one-of-a-kind handmade items.
Presumably you don't have time to make all that many, and consequently
don't need a huge number of customers. If these are made by US
residents and for sale rather than as homemade gifts, they are usually
very expensive.

You need to find the segment of the market that will pay what you
charge--anyone who wants items priced like India imports is not your
maket--and concentrate on that.

I don't know what your bag looks like, but I personally would not expect
to pay _less_ than $100 for a hand-embroidered item that is not a cheap
import.

Note that hobbyist costumers fall into two categories--the kind who will
spend almost all their spare cash on their hobby, and the kind who want
or need to do everything at the lowest possible price. You want to
target the first category.

I'm definitely *not* what you would call a speedy worker, the caftan is still
ongoing, I've been puttering away at it for the better part of 5 years. (I get
easily distracted :-) )The coat is almost done, hubby has been pestering me for
it for a couple of years, there's just a bit of fingerlooped trim to go on the

Hi Kathleen,
Uploaded a new picture, i am going to give it a taffeta handle in same
colour as the purse itself, so that the highlight will stay at the
embroidery.
http://www.my-drewscostumes.dk/purseembroideries.htm
It has a gusset in the side, and gives place for many things.
I think i have an interrested buyer allready.

Re: [h-cost] Re:Bjarne's bags

2006-01-27 Thread Bjarne og Leif Drews

Hi Mia,
I could not do this, as this is not my own design.
The stumpwork flowers are made after a design by Helan Pierce, and the bag
after a design from Linda Tudor.
Even i did combine the embroidery to another design by another, i could not
commision this as my work.

But one day i shall...

Re: [h-cost] Re: Elizabethan Corset Habits was: Gestational Stays

2006-01-27 Thread Lloyd Mitchell
Such a good point, Fran. Besides the issue of body control as a fashion
issue, this matter of deformity must certainly weighed heavily in the matter
of corsetry in general.
I am just remembering that when I had my first child, my mother-in-law asked
me on the QT if I had made arrangements for a post-partum girdle. I had no
idea what she was talking about. She also was a nurse, and after birthing 6
children, she was convinced that my body would never support the abdomen
without a proper foundation garment. I should plan for the future.
I have had the opportunity to observe close on the difference between a
girdle and a foundation garment. Have also seen the "Mother of them all"
garment to be worn in pregnancy. Awesome!

Greetings,

I'm pretty sure you speaking of:
Hearn, Karen. Marcus Gheeraerts II: Elizabethan Artist in
Focus. London: Tate Publishing, 2002.

It's a small book but the exhibition itself was only one room,
IIRC. Worth picking up if you can find it.

a Study Day at the V&A. It was originally intended to be lead by
Janet Arnold, but she had passed away the previous autumn. So it
turned into a kind of rememberance of her.

Anyway, one of the curators from the Tate said that she was working
gathering images of pregnant ladies for (I believe) a book. I'm
pretty sure that it wasn't an exhibition.

Has anyone heard or seen anything about this?

Just curious.

And thanks again, Susan.

PS: Does anyone know if there is a publication date for Janet
Arnold's book on underwear? That was one other thing that was

Hi Kathleen,
Uploaded a new picture, i am going to give it a taffeta handle in same
colour as the purse itself, so that the highlight will stay at the
embroidery.

It has a gusset in the side, and gives place for many things.
I think i have an interrested buyer allready.

I'm puzzled as to what you mean by this, Kathy. Surely a thin woman has few
squishy bits and so can't mould herself into a different shape? I can't change
my shape with a corset except by constricting my lower ribs so that I can't
breathe freely.
