Those are really neat! However, may I humbly suggest a little more info in
a post like this, to give us a hint of the period. I suppose that, if I
don't know who Nicholas Hillard is, I can assume that is not a period of
primary

You're right. Fine drawing is described in the

could be used to reinforce a seam. It just wouldn't
look anything like the pictures I posted when used

While I really enjoyed both sets of movies (SciFi version, and the
 original
movie with extended info), the books are so much better imho. If you
haven't read them, do, at least the first three books. I've read most of
that series, and the first three are much better, with the story going
 whacky imho after that.

But I will also admit to enjoying the SciFi movie costumes very much, even
if the storylines are a bit changed. It's been a long while since I saw
 the
original movie (when it came out in the theatre, and again when the
extended aired on tv although I vaguely watched it because I was working),
 so I won't comment there.

I have it on the shelf, but it is in the file to discard.
Does anyone not know about the R.Courson book I mentioned earlier. He
covers hair styles from almost pre-history through most of the twentieth
Century. This volume is about 3 thick; the drawings are based on statuary
of the ancients through gleanings from pictorial evidences of art and
photography. All of the pic's are black and white line renderings of hair
style from any of the periods. And it carries a fairly comprehensive
bibliography as well as interpretive descriptions .

Oh, and has anyone seen this book: Daring Do's: History of hairstyles by

I looked through it in a bookstore once. Fewer illustrations than I'd
like,
and very un-informative text. Moreover, I don't think it had any pictures
whatsoever of Roman period styles. Don't waste your money.

If you want pictures of Roman ladies' hair styles, there's a nice little
section in A.T. Croom's Roman Clothing and Fashion, which is still in
print
and not too expensive (I think it runs about $35 USD).

[h-cost] Dune costumes

2006-02-11 Thread Cheryldee
While I really enjoyed both sets of movies (SciFi version, and the

One should never go to a movie based on a book and expect it to be in any
way true to the book's story. Different medium. Then one is less often
disappointed. I loved the Dune books. I also loved the David Lynch Dune
movie.
If any of you are fans of particular film directors, as I am of David Lynch,
you go to that movie to see what that director has done with the story, not
to see a reenactment scene-by-scene of the book. At least, that is my
opinion. If you're looking for the same story as the book, you are bound to
be
disappointed most of the time. Where was Tom Bombadil, after all, in Lord of
the Rings?

That said, the process of designing costumes for a science fiction film or
fantasy is that the world you are creating never really existed. So you get
to create the world, along with the rest of the design team. So much fun! And
the choices in Dune the movie (the 80's one with Sting) are very
interesting. I particularly liked the moisture-trapping suits. The name for
them
escapes me. And, of course, the Court. And the creepy Baron. (shudder) and
how
all of these choices related to the characters.

[h-cost] DVDs

2006-02-11 Thread Lavolta Press
I just saw a fantastic DVD I bought of Offenbach's La Vie Parisienne.
This production was put on by the Opera National de Lyon; it has English
subtitles. The costumes are around 1876, more or less--they're stage
costumes.

But who cares about the costumes? The opera is a vivid, simultaneously
cynical and sentimental evocation of the demi-monde, with very witty
lyrics and dialog. It gives all the details of things like how a grande
horizontale juggles her lovers, and how people party at a fashionable
restaurant (the head waiter instructs new staff on when and when not to
enter a room in which a couple are dining), how they drink all night,
the various postures they wake up in, how they order tea and stagger home.

The singing and acting in this production are brilliant, and the music,
of course, is wonderful.

Also, I think that Cassine-Scott did a fair job in his Greek and Roman

I have the DVD with Placido Domingo doing Hoffmann...on the Kultur label.
It's not bad. But there are several versions. Here's a link to ArkivMusic's
page
of them:

 ArkivMusic | Album List Page

But my fave recording [not DVD...just a CD] is with Francisco Araiza:

ArkivMusic | Offenbach: Tales Of Hoffmann / Tate, Norman, Araiza, Et Al

This is not your usual version you hear in the opera house. They have
restored the complete introduction with the scene with the Musewho
disguises
herself as Nicklausse to keep Hoffmann true to his art. [suddenly a lot of
things
make more sense, don't they?] And the speaking scenes are restored...but you
lose Copelias' aria about eyes. [Offenbach died while they were preparing the
1st production. Afterwhich...the producers did what they wanted, composing it
thru and eliminating a lot of stuff.] The Antonia act is second instead of
last, The Giuietta act is last with a very different ending. Instead of her
just
leaving Hoffmann, Dapertutto plots his death by poisoning a glass of wine.
But Giulietta drinks it by mistake and drops dead as Dapertutto laughs.

Doncha love opera??? Like Anna Russell says: You can do anything, as long as
you sing it.

Any of you who are not familiar with this opera, I highly recommend it. It
one of the greats...in either version.
