When in doubt, I check Norris for leads. I know he redraws, but its a
redraw from something original, even if it is partly made up or modified.

In this case, Charles IX by Francois Clouet, 1569.

There are a lot of his images. Go down just a little bit, and images #9 and
#10 should do you right.

Seems that style is not much in fashion at that time, because it was the
only one with such long skirts that I could find. Norris does show a
Scottish nobleman, 1567 with skirts almost as long, but I don't know where
the original image would be located to confirm.

**
I don't see any breeches on page 63.

I thought her dilemma was she cannot find a pictorial reference to a
doublet
with long skirts worn with "breeches"by which I think she means
Venetians. There is a rendering of a man in a skirted doublet [one looks
like a
jerkin] with paned hosen that come to just above the knee on pages 11, 15
and 19. The paintings these details are from are

"The Fete at Bermondsey" by Joris Hoefnagel c1570 [page 11] "The
Embarkation at Dover" in the Royal Collection [page 15] and "The Field of
the Cloth of Gold", also in the Royal Collection [Page 19]

The whole paintings [I think] are on the "Contents" pagebut get your
magnifying glass out.

But that's the problem isn't it? Most renderings of a doublet with
Venetians
are of the later short doublet with tassets.

And again, these men all appear to be servants of some kind holding arms or

something. But some are just dancing or socializing so you cannot really
tell.

Thanks Kimiko, but I don't think it's quite what I am after - I
trawled the Clouets already. I have a picture of a shorter doublet
and Venetians which I may have to go with.

I haven't reenacted much lately, but three years back I was wearing
the stays I made 15 and 20 years ago. With the older set, I
reinforced the binding under the arms and repaired them a few times.
Yes, we wear them quite a lot!

I don't know how much your client will be wearing her stays. A dance
once a year, or 30 weekends per year, or somewhere in-between? I've
seen originals bound in linen tape (late 18thC) but I have not seen
any bound with silk.

I'm imagining the reenactor of the future doing light research about
people in the early 21stC wearing corn. They will do extensive
experiments with spinning and weaving the corn silk - we must have
lost that technology!

And then someone will find a corn-husk doll and understand that it
was a realistic representation of dress. But did people wear giant
corn husks, or make "feathered" garments with them? What base fabric
did they use? Can anyone help me with this research, someone said
they did not grow corn as large as we do today, but then I saw this
movie called "Sleeper" where obviously they did...

Does it have an interior band? If so, you may have to remove it. If
not,
just try steaming, steaming, with a teakettle if you don't have a
proper
steamer, then putting it on the right size form (or maybe even the
head will
work). However, sounds like said hat is cheap enough not to bother,
nor might
that steaming will even work. But you aren't out much if it doesn't.
 There are
lots of sources for cheap cowboy hats out there. On-line, try
Shepler's.

Around here, the Latino stores stock straw ones--not felt, so much.

I'm sure you can do that. They stretch gloves and shoes. You need to make

You can use a hat stretcher like this one:

I would try using just the stretcher first before adding a softener like
