I recieved a lovely album of baroque lute music, which I have yet to have

RE: [h-cost] Questions re: Moda a Firenze

2006-12-27 Thread 00217146

I would add to this: a lot of the sources are Italian, also, so if you want to
track down the primary source for any of the information, it's going to be
difficult. (On the other hand, the *primary* source would be in Italian anyway,
so maybe it's great that the authors have told us where to look)

The only bad things that I can think of is thet the intro by the authors
is in Italian. Plus-- there is no index. Makes it difficult to reference.

Other than that it a WONDERFUL book.

[h-cost] Moda a Firenze/at home in Italy

2006-12-27 Thread 00217146
Along with Moda a Firenze as a major source for Italian Ren information, I would
also recommend the book for the At Home in Renaissance Italy exhibition.

Amazon has the hardcover for about what we paid for the paperback, which I've
only seen at the VA gift shop.

http://www.amazon.com/Home-Renaissance-Italy-Marta-Ajmar/dp/1851774882/sr=8-1/qid=1167215954/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/104-0297118-3643175?ie=UTF8s=books

*beautiful* book, while not focused on costume it does have lots of pictures I
haven't seen elsewhere, though this isn't exactly my area of emphasis, so I
haven't been looking.

squares filled with Jacobean-style flowers alternating with a lattice
pattern, tones of gold and rose. Sixty inches wide. $10 a yard. I
didn't ask re fiber content, but it's got a very good hand and soft
sheen--and the back, being primarily those rose tones, is almost
pretty enough to show off on its own. Putting this on my livingroom

[h-cost] Glass beaded caul?

Hello Everyone,

I'm wondering if anyone knows where I can get a beaded caul? I saw a Lady
with one completely made from glass bugle beads and have been trying to find
one since I saw her over a year ago. She was given it as a gift and doesn't
know where it came from. My attempts to make one myself have not gone well.
At all. ;)

Castle Garden Creations makes beaded cauls but they are of plastic ( and I
have several already). I do not want a crotched snood as I have a bunch of
those as well.

If anyone has ideas or suggestions I would very much appreciate it!

changed). I'm embarrassed to say I don't know his name!
The shop is maybe a mile (maybe less) straight down from the Main
Street exit off the Merritt Parkway, on the eastern side of the
street. Harder to get to off I-95 but not impossible.

He's in the north end of Bridgeport, CT. I've been telling him he HAS
to go online, but so far he hasn't. He's kind of a shy man. Anyway,
last week I did get him to promise maybe in the new year for a
  website.

It's a mill-end shop, so the stock varies, but he has gorgeous
silks (including dupioni) and linens, both 100% and various blends,
and a great variety of trims. (Plus of course cotton prints,
sequinned and embroidered fancy fabrics, fake furs, muslin in every
width known to wo/man, etc. etc.) Prices are very good generally. I
just succumbed to 3 yards of upholstery fabric in what the Crayola
crayon company used to call Prussian blue with a brocade design of
squares filled with Jacobean-style flowers alternating with a lattice
pattern, tones of gold and rose. Sixty inches wide. $10 a yard. I
didn't ask re fiber content, but it's got a very good hand and soft
sheen--and the back, being primarily those rose tones, is almost
pretty enough to show off on its own. Putting this on my livingroom
futon would upgrade my whole home--but maybe I'll upholster MYSELF in
it rather than my couch! Also got a yard of Czech rhinestone
beading, $12.50--so far, just to look at! And what I bought two yards
of and STAYED IN MY H-COST SANTA LIMIT is I think remarkable.
His wife is Indian and he is from one of the Arab countries, and
occasionally they also have scarves and pashminas, if they've
recently taken a little trip to see their folks.

Hop on a plane and come see me, Kimiko, and we can wallow around.

Alright Ruth Anne, where is this fabric store, and can we get there

  collecting good store recommendations.

[h-cost] Re: Questions re: Moda a Firenze

2006-12-27 Thread A. Thurman

Based on everyone's recommendations, I went ahead and put in a reserve
from an Italian company called Maremagnum who has to check with
their sources - I was told to expect a reply in 3 weeks. Is this the
Italian company you ordered out of, Susan?

I was under the impression that Shramansky was sold out permanently;
if this is not the case I may go ahead and put in a request with them
as well.

snip The only place that I know of right now that has it for
sale is Poison Pen Press, and last time I checked, they wanted 190.00

for it. Evidently, I got one of the last copies that Michael
 Shramansky had! snip

Susan; when did you last talk to Michael? I ordered one about
mid-December and while he was out, he was expecting another shipment
from the Italian publishers after the holidays so I am on back order.

December the 12th. I had ordered a copy from a company in Italy, but
it seems to have disappeared into the belly of the Postal Snail.
They're going to issue me a refund (or at least they said that they
would). The day I heard they were out of print, I ordered one from
Michael off the web site.

No. It was just place an order -- it was a different company.
Somebody else on one of the other lists that I'm on ordered from them.
It's not been longer than 2 weeks ago, though.

*somebody* (you know, *them*) said that both Michael Shramansky and
David Brown/Oxbow were talking to the museum about a second printing.
