Re: [h-cost] Buttons things colonial
This isn't my period, but I always envisioned a town crier to look a bit like this guy with stockings and buckled shoes: http://www.noquartergiven.net/hamptonbbfestival.htm (about 1/3 down the page) It would certainly be less work than all of those buttonholes on the gaiters. :) [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Greetings Earthlings, I'm making a 1770's colonial rural town crier. ... And maybe some gaiters. I like the look of all those buttons up the outside calf. But I do also have riding boots... but I'd have to put a cuff on them and I don't know if he wants to fool with boots. Of course all the buttons on the gaiters! Talk about fooling with something. ___ h-costume mailing list h-costume@mail.indra.com http://mail.indra.com/mailman/listinfo/h-costume
[h-cost] OT: silks for sale NEW Elizabethan corset
Greetings, Please forgive this commercial post. I've already posted this to the YahooGroups but for those of you who aren't members and might be interested... I'm moving and clearing out my fabric stash. I've just added a bunch of silks to the page... http://www.cyberiosity.com/FabricSale/Default.html Please email me at [EMAIL PROTECTED] if you are interested in any of these fabrics. I apologize in advance - none of the gowns currently showing on the garb page are available, however there will be a silk and linen corset boned with reeds going up on that page tomorrow, as well as a wool cloak. If anyone is interested in the corset and wants photos before tomorrow I can easily email them. It is a brand new corset, never worn (the purchaser reneged so I'm dropping the price to sell) and is silk, linen and boned with reeds. Cheers, Danielle Nunn-Weinberg ___ h-costume mailing list h-costume@mail.indra.com http://mail.indra.com/mailman/listinfo/h-costume

But a waistcoat sans coat? Nope. [Maybe a sleeved one. And that seems a bit old fashioned to me for 1770's. We also discussed a work smock and also a rifle shirt.] He can op to not wear the coat if he chooses. And, in an attempt to make the costume more interesting, I like the idea of gaiters, or riding boots. Making gaiters is less expensive than the right shoes. I really hate those fake buckle thingies! He can also op out of the gaiters if he chooses. I'm giving him a complete outfit. He can wear it the way he wants, I suppose, but I want to do my part correctly. It's for theatre [he's a story teller] however, not a museum, so I'm not doing handmade buttonholes. [I may do all the top stitching by hand though, because that really looks different from machine top stitching. There's also a trick we did on Interview with the Vampire where you just quickly do a whip stitch around machine buttonholes... not that close together. It just makes the buttonhole not look so machine-made neat. Still, I've seen hand made buttonholes that are perfect and look like no human hand has touched them.] ** See what's new at http://www.aol.com ___ h-costume mailing list h-costume@mail.indra.com http://mail.indra.com/mailman/listinfo/h-costume

Re: [h-cost] Looking for h-costumers in NOLA
I have a friend in New Orleans. She is a fabulous costumer--does wonderful embroidery and embellishments--mainly late 19th and early 20th c. And she has started making repro. shoes. I can forward your contact info. to her if you'd like. She also does vintage dance, WW I, is a musician, and works at a museum. There are several vintage dancers in the New Orleans Area, not sure how active they are for events.
