[h-cost] OT: Christmas Decorations

2010-12-02 Thread penny1a
OFF TOPIC

This might not be historic or vintage needlework but I found a beautiful
cut-work embroidered Christmas runner last summer in an antique store. The
embroidery is machine made.

A link to my 2009 photos of the handmade Christmas decorations at Colonial
Williamsburg (CW) homes. I took some really good close-ups so that if
someone wanted, you can make them.

http://www.costumegallery.com/Williamsburg/2009/1010984.htm . The CW
decorations are made of all natural items. I am returning to CW Dec. 11 to
see if they have new decorations and photograph them. Today I am making my
variation of this wreath:

http://www.costumegallery.com/Williamsburg/2009/1020053.htm . I collected
some of the items from my yard last summer...like the gumballs, tails of
ornamental grasses, etc. I tried to grow bachelor buttons for the wreath
but they didn't grow well. So I have to come up with something else for the
small white flowers. If you have a suggestion, please pass it along to me.
Hopefully, I will photograph my progress of making the wreath.

How unusual! I have a handful of doilies and runners with a green and/or red
theme that I use, but nothein as grand as this!

De: I remember this type of cutwork/embroidery with the color was popular in
the 30s and 40s. Another technique was with sheer cotton and a piece of
colored fabric was sewn to the back to give a "frosted" look to the design
and then the cutwork to accent.

2010-12-02 Thread Carol Kocian

I think the textile techniques are interesting, but would prefer that
the discussions relate back to historic costume. There are certainly
a lot of things to discuss regarding the winter holidays — special
outfits that people had for the season, and also fancy dress or
theatrical items worn for seasonal plays, parades, tableaux and the
like.

Borderline question: do tree skirts count as costume? ;-)

[h-cost] Costumes in Pillars of the Earth

2010-12-02 Thread Lavolta Press
Which I just watched on DVD on three successive evenings and found
absolutely riveting. Astounding. It's right up there with Rome and
Deadwood (I have the DVDs for The Tudors but have not watched them yet).
So, what do people think of the costumes?
