[h-cost] 1880's "casual" dress question

2011-07-04 Thread Kathryn Pinner
IIRC, 1879-80 is sort of between bustle periods. What would a young English
lady living on the coast of Cornwall be wearing? I will be costuming "Pirates
of Penzance" in January and am looking for some ideas of where to look. Fashion
plates in Godey's and Harper's hardly seem the type of garment that young
ladies would be wearing on the beach. Googling previous "Pirates" productions
produces a wide range. Of course I know that it is an operetta with a rather
silly premise and costume designers can take great liberties, but I would love
to have some idea of what might actually have been worn. Any pointers in the
right direction will be greatly appreciated. I am more familiar with 18th
cent.-early 19th c. and then very late 19th c. (Fran, which of your books
covers this?)

There was specific Victorian wear for the "seaside" (in addition to
bathing costumes per se). See Avril Landsdell's Seaside Fashions
1860-1939, and Chapter 7 of Christina Walkley's The Way to Wear 'Em.
Seaside fashions are also discussed and pictured in fashion magazines,
especially those focusing on summer clothing.

My book that covers 1877-1882 fashion is Fashions of the Gilded Age (two
volumes).

Look for "beach costume" or "seaside dress". I know I've seen some of
those in the fashion magazines.

The book "Fabric of Society: A Century of People and their Clothes
1770-1870" by Jane Tozer & Sarah Levitt has a wonderful chapter on
Seaside dress. One of the characteristics is the fabric used, mostly
washable cottons (or linens). The general look reflects the currently
fashionable styles.

If you are looking for a little visual candy in addition to the lovely book
suggestions, the miniseries The Buccaneers had some lovely seaside looks, iirc.
Think white and pale colors (or colors striped with white) in light fabrics
like
lawn and ruffles. :) So yummy!

If your young ladies have any pretense to fashion*, they'd wear the nearly
bustle-less (they might wear a small bustle pad), very narrow skirts, but
probably not as narrow as the fashion plates.

*If a girl wasn't out working, she had the free time to renovate her skirts
to the narrower fashions. Even house maids often did their best to copy
the fashions, and making a narrow skirt was far cheaper than creating a
full bustle dress.

Fran's books are absolutely brilliant. I use them every time I need
inspiration or details for that period. Highly recommended!

[h-cost] Folkwear 508

2011-07-04 Thread Suzanne
Has anyone made Folkwear's "1915 Traveling Suit"?

If so, how's the fit? The jumper has a deep V-neckline front and back, deep
armholes, and plenty of fullness over the waist and hips--so I'm wondering why
it needs a center back zipper? (This pattern has 2 "Recommended" reviews at
the GBACG site but neither mentions the zipper.)
Thanks,
Suzanne
