Thanks all for your help! I've forwarded the notes to my friend, who
greatly appreciates the advice.

Someone suggested The Great Pattern Review, but apparently you need to
know the pattern first to find the comments. Any plans for a search option
on it?

I have used this one a lot for theatre use. Goes together quickly.

Since no one has answered this, I will get the ball rolling (so everyone who
didn't answer can tell me what crap these patterns are, cause they are "Big  3"
patterns  ) but I have used this one with success, McCalls M6143. It is a multi
size pattern for kids and adults, has 4 "American Heros" in it "Uncle Sam,Statue
of Liberty, Tom Jefferson " and Abe Lincoln"
The Abe Lincoln pattern is a simple to put together Frock type coat ,that
turns out quite well. I used this to make my then Teenage son a Black Frock
coat as  featured on the main characters in the 1990's movie "Tombstone". I
used a havy canvas /slubby linen for a more "Cowboy" ,less "Townie" look. He
still has it ,and he's 35. You can use better material, line it and add fancy
buttons, It is simple and  not compliccated to use.
McCalls's also offeres a  mens Civil war  Officers Jacket  M4745. Has 2
vaariations.
Now, let the opionions begin...

2012-06-18 Thread Helen Pinto
I had to make one a year and a half ago, and I ended up using Simplicity 2895.
I was impressed that the seams were in the right places, and the best part was
that the week I needed it (and I only had a few days to get it done), it was on
sale at JoAnn's for 99 cents. Of course, ignore all the instructions about
fusible interfacing and do it up the old way. The pattern comes in two
collections of adult men's sizes and also includes a decent vest and shirt.

If you go to thesewingacademy.org and search for a gentleman by the name of Jim
Ruley he drafts custom men's patterns from the 1860's using period tailoring
manuals. For as complicated as a frock is the pattern he makes will take a lot
of the fuss out of the pattern for you getting you one that is very nearly
ready to cut, only a few fitting alterations will be needed.

I hesitated to respond because I don't remember exactly what year/s the
pattern covers, but the Laughing Moon frock coat is beautiful and as
historic as it can be. I just don't know if it's CW-era or slightly later.
