[h-cost] Corset for a man

2009-06-09 Thread Hanna Zickermann

Hi there,

I am asked to make experiments with a romantic era corset - for a man!

So far I only found information in "Waisted Efforts", but I am sure
there are other sources somewhere else. Any recommendations or things
to consider when lacing a man?

Thank you so much,
Hanna

I have been called upon to make a few of these in my time, both for fetish
clients (modified female and dressy male types) and for historical clients (mid-
late 1800s) as well as male girdles for wear under modern clothing.

Your question is pretty general for the moment: What do you mean by "romantic
era"? Generally, you need to decide the waist height for the period you are
looking at and ensure the tapering is suitable to get that look; I have made
them 12 panels around and 16 panels around, high-chest to just below the waist,
lacing to the back.

I could not find any patterns but was lucky enough to see one in a private
collection and have a few pics to go from...sorry to say, you are going to have
to drape with trial and error then devise your pattern from that!

If I can send you some of the pics offlist, let me know,

men's corsets. You might want to contact them.

2009-06-09 Thread Becky Rautine

When I read this email, the scene of them lacing up the old drunk gunslinger
(Lee Marvin) in the movie "Cat Balue" came to mind. That made me laugh. I might
just have to find that movie to watch again.

Nothing wrong with men wearing corsets. They do the same thing for men as they
do women.

Sincerely, Rebecca Rautine

Re: [h-cost] Corset for a man

2009-06-09 Thread Hanna Zickermann

Thanks a lot!

I thought "Romantic era" was the English term for
the German "Biedermeier" - sorry for the
confusion. I am looking for 1830ies
Superdandy-style, not the late 19th century officer-look. :-)

This morning, I have been browsing German
corsetry links - so far, I learned that men are
more sensitive to lacing over the stomach, which
is why corsets for men tend to be less curvy in
the front seams; and the panels are less curved
but have parallel sections between the flared out
top and bottom. Can you second that?

I´d be most interested in your photos, would you please send them to me?

Hanna

Andy Warhol wore a corset after he was shot. For the rest of his life,
I think.

I thought a man's corset was called a Stomacher.
A friend in Chicago found a pattern that might work. I'll send it round
later.

Then Captain Kirk was shot, too?

There's also "Topsy Turvy" where they argue in a costume fitting about the
lead singer's corsetin the 1880's.

And Jonathan Frakes, Riker in Star Trek, the Next Generation, wore one...
according to one of his dressers for the (dreadfully funny) miniseries
"North & South". It was his corset, not the wardrobe department's, so
apparently
he wore it for "Trek" too.

Even if one is not cinching in the waist with tight lacing, the corset
makes one look slimmer because it makes the waist round. If you look at the
shape of the waist from the top, it will be an oval with the long part going
from side to side and the narrow part going from front to back. By simply
encasing the waist in a corset this oval becomes round. This make one look
slimmer than normal from the front. The catch is now you look wider from the
side, but usually your arms are there so it doesn't matter so much. And of
course, one looks better if standing up straight, which the corset
encourages.

Re: [h-cost] Corset for a man

2009-06-10 Thread Sid Young
Corsets for men are fantastic provided there is a decent frame to work
with :) If the guy is lucky enough to have an hour glass figure (even
if there chest/under bust is quite large) then a normal female corset
can be an excellent fit. Unfortunately most men who try to wear female
corsets dont have the right proportions so its not always a good look.
