[Hardhats-members] While the Wiki's Wacked
The register a new member function is sick (hopefully temporarily). Meanwhile, those of us who had registered earlier can get in just fine. It's really a lovely wiki and spam free, almost. User free, almost, too. :-( I wonder... while the wisest among us attempt to make the wiki safe from spam AND, at the very same time, accessible to the good among us (We know who we are.) a suggestion... How about we make one user id, say "Hardhater", with access code, say "xxx". That ID can be added published here... or even on the wiki itself with relative immunity from bots. And we can all use the wiki while the registration function is getting repaired. Kevin T made an offer to share his ID off list, and I'm sure Nancy A is similarly inclined. I'm just hoping that there may be an ID available that we can . If it fails to withstand the spam tsunami the password could be changed regularly or the ID just killed as a failed experiment. highest regards to all. jlz I have always favored requiring registration, at least for those wishing to contribute. It's nice to be able to have some identification of who is contributing. --- This SF.Net email is sponsored by xPML, a groundbreaking scripting language that extends applications into web and mobile media. [Hardhats-members] Re: RTFM we're not FORKed yet!
1. Here's hoping that the third installment of Rick Marshall's epic poem hits the airwaves on tomorrow's conference call. 2. By now Chris Richardson probably knows that I able to record the first installment, contrary to what was said last week (when I was unable to attend). So we do have the first two sessions complete. 3. Rick's recap of the first session that then followed was far from wasted. I find it a nice clean introduction... very useful to me, at least. 4. Audacity converted Chris' 59Meg .wav to an 18Meg .ogg very nicely. Highly recommended and I use it to play the oggs in Windows, too. 5. I will try to record tomorrow's session, but as always disease and pestilance may intervene. I've had the privilege of participating with (I started to say "teaching") medical students in the problem based system as adopted from Mcmaster to Mercer University in Macon, Georgia. In Mercer's PBL six students, one practicing physician and a practicing PhD spent the morning around a table pondering a case description, usually a page or two long, detailing the course of some illness. Richard G. DAVIS wrote concerning teaching curiosity: My approach has been to adopt the passive, permissive strategy that waits for the appearance of the curious minds, and then to create paths of least resistance for these special few. Bingo, Richard. The cool thing about PBL is that it is naturally open-ended. The six students must work out for themselves where they go with Suzie Jones' sore throat. And the two faculty must lead in the most passive, permissive way possible. Now, medical students are HIGHLY motivated learners but always torn between the sheer joy of learning all this new stuff and the terror that something will be missed... So they tend to periodically beg/demand to be spoon fed just the essential, practical minimum that will make them <>. On the faculty side there is the same sort of tension. Subject matter experts are inherently afraid that a student will not learn ALL of biochemistry, pharmacology, psychology, or whatever... So the "experts" are programed to stand up and launch a lecture. PBL is wonderful stuff, if you can stand uncertainty. Re: [Hardhats-members] A VT100+ terminal emulation is needed for the new Fileman
from http://www.putty.nl/faq.html#faq-what A.10.3 What does ‘PuTTY’ mean? It's the name of a popular SSH and Telnet client. Any other meaning is in the eye of the beholder. It's been rumoured that ‘PuTTY’ is the antonym of ‘getty’, or that it's the stuff that makes your Windows useful, or that it's a kind of plutonium Teletype. We couldn't possibly comment on such allegations. --- This SF.net email is sponsored by: Splunk Inc. Do you grep through log files for problems? Stop! Thanks, Jim! Below I include my corrected m2web.cgi for further suggestions and/or others' enlightement. [Hardhats-members] Xdialog, dialog, m2web
I'm aiming toward Boston and I'm attempting to fancy up Bhaskar's install/run script. My ultimate goal is to include the installation of m2web into the scripts: 1.) I've added a test to ...OpenVistA/vista to switch from Xdialog to plain old dialog in the absence of Xwindows, like so: ### if [[ -z $DISPLAY ]] ; then dialog --infobox "X not running" 0 0 ; $vista_source/dvista ; exit 1 fi ### 1b.) ?? How do I add a test for the <> of Xdialog itself?? 2.) Now I have a new script "...OpenVistA/dvista" that uses dialog instead of Xdialog. I will post that here if anyone needs it before Boston. 3.) I've added a menu option to do a rundown to both scripts: case $action in "Run")...snip "Erase") ...snip "Install (and run)") ...snip ;; "Rundown") clear `$gtm_dist/mupip rundown -r "*"` Xdialog --infobox "rundown finished" 0 0 6000 ; exit 1 ;; esac 3.) The addition of m2web's installation is giving me trouble, partly because Jim Self uses environmental variables differently. From m2web-vista-cgi: #!/bin/bash #invoke GT.M for M2Web CGI export m2web="/usr/local/m2web" export vista_home="/usr/local/vista/OpenVistA" export gtm_sysid="vista.net" export gtm_dist="/usr/local/gtm" export gtm_log="$gtm_dist/log" export gtmgbldir="$vista_home/g/mumps.gld" export gtmroutines="$vista_home/o($m2web/w $vista_home/r) $gtm_dist" Bhaskar's script uses $vista_source where Jim's has $vista_home. And Bhaskar uses $vista_home for the location of the directory in which Vista will run. Guidance from Bhaskar and Jim would be appreciated. regards, jlz better grandfather than programmer. Re: [Hardhats-members] Numbers for programs stored in Databases
DON't split the coefficient from the root. Open Office Calc expresses the exponent with an "E" rather than "D". I think that if you replace "D-" with "E-" and "D " with "E" the file would import to Calc as a tab delimited table. regards, jlz Nancy E. Anthracite wrote: http://www.cdc.gov/growthcharts/data/1977coefficients2.t Ext If you click on the word "Coefficients" at the top of this page, there is a table with this sort of notation. I was going to pull it into a spreadsheet and I thought it might be easier to separate out the exponent rather than leave it there to be parsed out. That way when I exported it again, I could comma delimit it rather than "D" delimit it. I was wondering why it was done that way. Greg probably has the answer.
