Leave off the rears and just use the sub w/ center and fronts. Should still
sound good for music. Of course, if you don't listen to music then I agree.
I'm not a gamer, but I will either listen to music, watch TV, or look at a
DVD or a rip of a DVD. I could probaby get by fine with just a sub and two
front speakers. I just hate the thought of NOT being able to get a rich

I saw my promedias on ebay for $300. You ought to be able to get what you

I'm not sure if I want to go that route. I have never happy with the control
module...it's sucks. And it's a hassle to get a good balanced soundfield
from them. To me, they sound best just for music, but suck for movies and
such. And, they have little support for other uses such as Xbox. Since
I've had 5 years from them, perhaps I'll spring for the Logitech's Z5500.

I have my PC next to a window...I wonder if moisture get in and affect it.
Everything in it seems squirrelly these days.

Anthony,
Which control unit do you have? There are 2. The newest one (improved) has a
jack on the right side (viewing the controls) and 4 knobs (instead of 3 like I
have).

I have the new model "pre-amp" but have not yet installed it. I'm still
spraying the
pots of the old "pre-amp" when sound gets scratchy and weak. One of these days.

Your problem may be the "pre-amp" module. Klipsch alluded to much trouble with
the old "pre-amp". Just a thought. Any competent electronics tech can fix
final
related problems with the sub's circuitry. I have even fixed the boomy-ness of
the
sub by using "speaker-uppers" to raise the sub off the floor, but couple it
back to the
hard subfloor. My "speaker-uppers are small aluminum cones. I have 3
different
heights (for various carpet thickness). Now raised the sub balances very well
to the
4 wall-mounted satelites. I do have the V-2.400 system however.
Hope this helps,
Duncan

RE: [H] Re: Aerial maps

2006-10-23 Thread Hayes Elkins
It really depends. local.live.com has actually higher resolution, higher
zoomed images of major metropolitain areas, especially on the east coast. So
far nothing can touch the "birds eye view" images that live offers. Mapquest
as far as I can tell licenses the same imagery taken mostly in 2002 that
google uses as well.

Take for instance the overhead shots of FedEx field, the location where
92,000 peopel assemble each week to see the washington redskins lay an egg
on the field. With live, you can actually see the egg.

live.com:
http://local.live.com/default.aspx?v=2&cp=38.907659~-76.864466&style=h&lvl=19&scene=6565568

live.com bird's eye:
http://local.live.com/default.aspx?v=2&cp=qgj5z18kv4h5&style=o&lvl=2&scene=6565568&sp=Point.qgj4nr8kv4v7_Fedex%20Field%20Bird%27s%20Eye___

Google:
http://www.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=1600+Fedex+way,+landover+md&ie=UTF8&z=19&ll=38.907647,-76.864364&spn=0.001505,0.003369&t=k&om=1

Mapquest:
http://www.mapquest.com/maps/map.adp?formtype=address&country=US&popflag=0&latitude=&longitude=&name=&phone=&level=&addtohistory=&cat=&address=1600+FedEx+way&city=landover&state=md&zipcode=

So in this case, mapquest's images stink. Poor resolution from all levels of
zooming. If you want any closer levels of zooming then what is offered from
live's bird's eye I suggest you hire a PI or join the CIA.

Hi Duncan,
I didn't realize there were 2 control units for the ProMedia 5.1s. Mine has
4 knobs if I recall correclty (1 big one and 3 smaller ones). It's a very
jerky volume control that I simply hate. I suppose the signal coming out of
it could be amiss, or it could be the amp in teh subbox is dead. I can't
tell. The control unit is lit and appears o be working. The subbox doesn't
seem to be generating any heat, so I don't get much feel for what it's
doing. I know sound is coming from the computer as I put a set of cheapo
speakers on and I can hear sound fine. I might go ahead and open this puppy
to see what I can see inside. Thx for the input.

[H] Another "great" MS decision

2006-10-23 Thread Brian Weeden

Just bought the expansion for AOE III called "The Warchiefs". Went to
install it and it said I didn't have AOE3 installed for either the
current user or all users. Which is curious, because I was just
playing it a few minutes earlier.

Did a little searching and found the problem. It seems that the
Warchiefs installer does a check for the Microsoft Games\Age of
Empires III folder in your Start menu and if it doesn't find it won't
install.

I don't know about you guys, but I NEVER keep programs in their
default Start Menu location. A pet peeve of mine is people that have
50 million folders with programs scattered everywhere. So of course I
moved the shortcuts to another folder.

I just think it is pretty dumb of MS to not only assume that everyone
kept their shortcuts in the default location but to refuse to install
if it is not so? That just boggles my mind

install it and it said I didn't have AOE3 installed for either the
current user or all users.

I am sure it's more sloppy programming rather than a high level
corporate decision by Microsoft to screw the little guy.

If you are into a card change, while pricey, I'd rec the Philips Acoustic Edge.
Have 2. No problems for the last 5 years. Really good performance and Sound.
JMHO.

They still make those? I used to own one. I finally just replaced it
with something newer. I probably just threw it out?!?

I use to have a Soundblaster Audigy 2. I had to ditch it because I
would get crap sound out.all kinds of noise coming out the
speakers. AFter I could never locate the problem, I just started using
my onboard 5.1 sound. At first, all was great. After a while, however,

now I hear the crappy noise coming from these cheapo speakers I'm using

Sounds as if I'm just screwed, huh? :)

Itunes take like 5 to 10 minutes to load!?!

OK. Sorry. Have had NO noise for either of mine. Hmm.
I'd be looking somewhere else for this glitch then.
I'm noise-free here. ... :)

It kinda sounds to me more like a debug/developer testing shortcut that
mistakenly made it into the RTM build more than a conscientious design

Re: [H] Another "great" MS decision

2006-10-23 Thread Brian Weeden

Something else funny - the Xpac install makes copies of several
directories in your My Games dir that are the same as the original
AOE3 dirs but simply have a "2" after them. Like AI2, RM2, Trigger2,
etc.

Oh, and the X-pac ignores all your setting and Hotkeys from the original.

That should be 4850, not 4580.

Sorry, I do not know about that one. My speed test read something like 4580
down, 384 up, which almost matches the 5000 down/384 up I'm supposed to be
getting.

How does the SB5120 compare to the SB4200? I do not want to replace a
reliable modem that I have had for 4 years with one that is not truly
faster. I just ran a speed test and got 2826 kb per second.

Do any of you have advice on replacing my older SB4200?

Thanks,
