[H] W98se/IBM Thinkpad

2006-12-05 Thread dhs

My BIL is trying to update an old IBM ThinkPad for his older son's college
work. Assume the machine will end up with WinXP. No specs ATM.
It has W98se. For some reason he wishes to know where in the Registry
might the CD Key be stored. I assume he means the many digit Key
entered by the user during an OS build. No idea why he wants this, but
I said I'd ask the collective!
I recall that we had this discussion some months back, but do not have
those emails because I use W2KPro.

Anyone recall where W98se stores the CD-Key? Is it stored plain or is it
scrambled/encrypted? If so, BIL may be SOL! LOL!
Best,
Duncan

[H] Kaspersky ver NOD32 ?

2006-12-05 Thread FORC5
Running NOD32 in my Vista box because it has been the only thing that works so
far.

Got a very ( extremely ) bad infected box in, needs a restore but restore disk
no where to be found. First I ran AVG free, then NOD32 then Kaspsersky.
Kaspsersky found A LOT of stuff Nod missed. Question, If I had ran Kaspsersky
first would NOD have found more stuff too ? I like Kaspsersky interface better
but the last time I ran a trial it would not do mapped drives, not sure this
one will either.

Which is better ? or are they equal and different ?

Yes. Running AVs in different order often ends up with one catching
viruses another missed.

[H] OT- Any budding writers?

2006-12-05 Thread Steve
If anyone does any writing or would like to have a shot at it, I'm looking
for short 350-700 word articles on a reasonably regular basis. You don't
have to be a great wordsmith as I will check & make alterations to fit
needs. I'm looking for articles & reviews on anything to do with latest
gadgerty, computers, games, consoles, phones etc. i.e. something you'd be
interested in reading about. Paying between $5-$10 per article.
Also looking for some comprehensive tut's on PC security, recovery from
disasters like virus infection etc. Approx $30/tutorial. Include graphics if
you can and if appropriate for the subject. Also open to suggestions on
other subjects if you have any ideas that you'd like to write about.

I do ask that it be your own work, nothing ripped off the web :)
Payments by Paypal or Egold
Please contact off list if intersested.
cheers,
Steve
