Well, I have to say it's a nifty deal. However, I had some bizarre
issues with it. I did the torrent thing and downloaded the full
install for Nov and updates from Dec. to Feb. I burned it to a CDRW
and copied it over to the effected system.

Every time I ran the Nov exe it would say it was corrupt. I even
downloaded it from a web site. The second time it ran fine and I
burned it and then copied it to the effected system and it happened
again. Went back to the system I burned it on and it was also screwed
up - even though it ran fine previously. Weird. I would up using the
/ncrc switch and it seems ok. Very strange behavior though.

I appreciate everyones help on this. Autopatcher was able to reinstall

going to need to be reinstalled. Sadly, they have no interest in using

[H] DynDNS

I'm not sure if this is the service I want, but I'd like to setup a
way to access my router at home (which has a dynamic IP) without
knowing what the IP currently is. Does the router have to support
this? How do I set something like this up?

Re: [H] DynDNS

2007-04-16 Thread j m g

my dlink router has a spot in the firmware setup for dropping in a url of
the dynamic dns site/ID password, if it works right it should long onto
the site and update the dns record for you, there's also a bunch of desktop
clients listed on the site as well - in all honesty I don't know if my
dlink's functionality works since being on a cable connection I think my IP
has only changed 2 maybe 3 times in the past 7 years

and yes dyndns.org would do what you want - I've got ssh running on a
freebsd vmware guest that I can hit up remotely and rdp on a winxp vmware
guest - works as well

actually do you want to access the router or what's behind it? my dlink has
an option to dis/enable remote admin of itself I think you would use the wan
ip and by default go to port 8080 - I've got this disable though

Linksys has this but you have to enable it, and you have to know the
IP...I think... other wise how would you find the router.

But you could do this in a round about way. If you log in to a PC on
the LAN, with Remote software, and then load a browser to log into
the router from behind the firewall.

Hello Thane,

Yep, that would be exactly what you want. It would be preferable if
your WAP/router has a client
for that particular dynamic DNS service, but if not I guess you could
leave an update client running

on a home PC?

Not sure what router you have at the moment, but those flashed with
DD-WRT or (IINM) Tomato do
have these clients built in. I'm using www.servebeer.com on a DD-WRT
flashed Linksys atm.

I guess I don't need to access the router, just a computer behind
it. I want to be able to VNC into a workstation on my network and
from there access other computers on the network via a second VNC
connection (I'm using UltraVNC right now, which works better for me
than TightVNC - thanks for the tip on VNC, Bobby.)

So I just don't want to end up in the situation where the IP address
for the work network changes and I have to drive in to find out what it is.

Gotcha. It'll work once you setup the router right.
I have the exact same setup on my Linksys WRT54GL w/DD-WRT. UltraVNC
into the torrent / web unit
and access any home unit (personal, HTPC, file server, etc.). Damned
convenient :)

This model uses either a Samsung LTM220M1 or an AU Optronics M220EW01. Both
of these are TN Film type panels. They'll provide a good response rate and
are economical, at the expense of color reproduction (color depth and color
accuracy) and viewing angle. A good price on a moderately-sized panel,
though. 1680x1050 (WSXGA+) may be a bit low on the resolution. Most 20 WS
panels are 1680x1050, whereas most 24 WS panels are 1920x1200 (WUXGA).

I picked up the 20 inch version about three weeks ago. Very happy with

RE: [H] SATA drive question...

2007-04-16 Thread Bobby Heid
I got my new drive today (500GB SATA) and after enabling the promise
controller in the BIOS, the system saw the drive fine. I am performing a
Ghost backup at the moment and Ghost estimates 73 minutes to back up 68GB
from a PATA drive to the SATA drive. Before, it took over 5 hours to back
up 100GB to another PATA drive. That comes out to .93GB/min for the new
drive and .33GB/min for the older drive. I guess the different busses make
a big difference.

Thanks for you all's information on this.

Can I just enable SATA in the BIOS and replace the drive with an SATA one?
I can deal with drive letter changes if that happens.

They're both TN+ film panels. The S panel is simply the TN panel made by
Samsung. It's better than the AUO, but still is a TN+.
